This amazing vocal prowess was born in a musical family at Ga- Sedibeni

Limpopo Province in South Africa, Musically delicious as her names suggests,
Candy was affected by this upbringing and has been interested in music for
as long as she can remember.
She started singing in her Mother’s community traditional group, Sekgapa, at
the tender age of 14. Her mother was the group leader and also the percussionist of the act.
Candy launched her professional music career in 1993 as song writer on the
legendary late Peter Teanet’s double multi-platinum seller, Nwa’yingwani. In
1993, Candy with her friend Nurse Matlala moved to the city of gold (JHB) to
look for a recording deal and met up with Shaagan Disco King Papa Penny

In 1995, they launched their career as Shaka Bundu Girls with the platinum
selling “HONA MO SOO” followed by the Gold certified “One Day” (1996),

person, she also decided to take her career to another level and started her
Independent music label called Mosekedi Entertainment

BEFORE TSAMANDEBELE FAME
2009 Candy was signed by Sony Music she came out
blazing with her first solo album "SIKI (FIVE CENTS)
producer by Trevor Mabunda” with her new identity, the
album was successful and won her her first South African
Traditional awards (Satma) in 2009, the exemplary star
says she believes a lot in culture and knew from Day one
what she wanted her voice and languages to be
preserved. Better yet she loves music and admits that she
didn’t know that people will "appreciate and except her
for who she is and the language that she use in her
singing”. "What she is doing is just singing and delivering
messages though music. When people get motivated by
her efforts, that is like icing on top of the cake.”More
than looking at what is happening in the Mzansi;
Candy says she is humbled by Kids all over the Country,
DRC Congo, Lesotho, Botswana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and
Mozambique loving their languages and "Tsamandebele
has been proof of that: “...even two year old African,
white or Indian can sing every word of "Tsamandebele",
and this is a proof that people are into culture, the issue
might have been the vehicle to deliver it to them.”

Three Little Pigs is currently touring the biggest festivals
of the world on the back of its National Arts Festival
success last year. As the artistic director of The Pink Couch,
a collective that has created works such as Mafikeng Road
and . . . miskien, Notcutt has made her mark. The work
she does is smart, engaging and original. This year, she
directed Thom Pain (Based on Nothing), billed as stand-up
existentialism, which was selected to travel to the
Amsterdam Festival as one of the Best of the Fest pieces

CANDY, THE NEW KALAWA JAZMEE FRONTWOMAN
Thanks to DJ Oskido’s dance hit, Tsa Mandebele, Candy
has legions of followers from three years old up to 90.
She lent her voice to do some folk storytelling over the
thumping beats of the house track that was nominated as
record of the year at this year’s SA Music Awards. It’s a
catchy danceathon boasting Khelobedu folklore as recited by
Candy, and the tiny tots and schoolgoers have taken it to
heart. Now the 42-year-old from Ga-Sedibeni village in
Modjadji, Limpopo, whose real name is Sekedi Mokwena,
is every child’s favourite aunt. She’s even organising a
creche tour for the children to see her in action. Not only
does she entertain with her music, but she is at the
forefront of making Khelobedu the 12th South African
official language, as espoused by Dr Mathole Motshekga.

RUTH PHUME, TSHWANE TV STATION MANAGER
At 31, Phume calls the shots at the TV station servicing
the capital city and its surrounds. She left school to
conquer the broadcasting industry. She was driven by a
passion inspired by her own family, who are also involved in
the media. In 1999, she worked for VIP Production as an
editor and also dabbled in camera work. She produced videos
for different churches on the SABC and also directed some
shows. In 2006, Phume hosted Gospel Mix on Africa Magic
channel. She is a winner of a Promax BDA Africa Award and
last year she was appointed as Tshwane TV station manager.
ROSE FRANCIS, FORMER MODEL AND PUBLISHER
A former high-profile model with international success in
the 1980s, Francis has blazed a trail in the publishing industry
over the past six years with her company, African Perspective
Publishing. The variety of local fiction, nonfiction and poetry
she has publishing is outstanding. These include The
Empowered Native by Letepe Maisela, Memory Is The Weapon
by Don Mattera, Dreams Of Flight by Myesha Jenkins, WENA,
a collection of contemporary poetry by Ntsiki Mazwai, and
The Politics Of South African Football by Oshebeng Alpheus
Koonyaditse. Her company also runs school programmes to
encourage reading and writing among teenagers. In 2010,
Francis received a United Nations World Media Award for best
publication for Nostalgic Waves from Soweto: Poetic
Memories of June 16, a poetry anthology by Sol Rachilo.
4
DJ ZINHLE, ROCKING HOUSE DJ
Her delicate look and pleasant demeanour proved
that you don’t have to be butch to make it in house
music, which is dominated by the likes of the muscular
and tattooed DJ Fresh. Once she conquered the decks, she
set her eyes on acting and has since appeared in dramas
such as Rhythm City and eKasi: Our Stories. Last year, she
competed in the Tropika Island of Treasure. She was the
Jika Majika resident DJ and has graced the stages as far
afield as London shoulder to shoulder with South Africa’s
finest male DJs, Vinny da Vinci, S’bu, Oskido and Christos.

MELINDA FERGUSON, PUBLISHER, EDITOR AND WRITER
After writing Smacked, a tell-all autobiography about her
battles with drug addiction, Ferguson’s relentless drive and
energy has seen her penning another two books, Hooked
(about combating the numerous other addictions modern life
seduces us with) and The Kelly Khumalo Story. She continues
to work as features editor of True Love magazine. A powerful
public speaker, Ferguson now runs her own imprint, MFBooks,
which focuses on women’s stories, at Jacana Media. One of
the biggest titles she has published so far is Drug Muled: The
Vanessa Goosen Story.
8
MICHELLE CONSTANT, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF BUSINESS
ARTS SA
This is a position she has held since August 2008. Constant
is also a radio broadcaster with a weekly programme on
SAfm called the Lifestyle Show. These two platforms,
among a variety of her roles in the South African cultural
landscape, have seen her bring together both corporate
South Africa and the arts community. The result has been
a safeguarding of continued arts sponsorship by companies
regardless of hard economic outlooks predicated by
the recession.
9
LIZA ESSERS, OWNER OF THE GOODMAN GALLERY
She made the acquisition of this bastion of art life in
2008. Essers’ role has seen her steer the gallery –
and the nation’s visual arts community – through one of
its most challenging periods. This was during the
contagious Spear debate after the Goodman Gallery hosted
an exhibition by Brett Murray, the artist behind the
controversial painting of a naked President Jacob Zuma
with his genitals exposed.

10
GITA PATHER, DIRECTOR OF THE WITS THEATRE
She has made a contribution both as a cultural
activist and creative director. Apart from co-producing a vast
list of theatrical productions, Pather has a long history of
development and leadership in the arts. She helped
establish the Transnet mobile theatre trucks in 1994, which
took the arts to previously unreachable places. Pather also
established the Women’s Arts festivals, which help focus the
spotlight on women’s issues and creative talents.
Sketchy
attempt
at insanity
CHARLES CILLIERS
[email protected]
The Rise of the Insanity League has
everything that makes a good comedy
sketch show. It also has a lot of
what doesn’t.
It brings together the considerable
talents of John van de Ruit of Spud
fame; Ben Voss, Van de Ruit’s
collaborator on their earlier Green and
Black Mamba sketch theatre shows (as
well as the man behind Beauty
Ramapelepele); and actor Aaron
McIlroy, a prolific stage comedian
(and the lunatic father in Spud). A
team with any of these guys in it
should produce comedy gold – and
when they do get it right, it’s great.
But they’re a little let down by
their concept.
They kick off with the rather thin
premise that there’s an age-old
Insanity League, responsible for some
of history’s greatest disasters,
including the Great Fire of London in
1666. There’s even an attempt to link
the league to the Battle of Hastings in
1066 when the Normans invaded
England. Normans are deftly made
synonymous with being “normal”, the
enemy of the Insanity League. And
that, supposedly, sets up the show:
that insanity is great and being a
Norman must be avoided at all costs.
But it falls a bit flat. For me,
comedy works best when the madness
is played as straight as possible, when
the actors don’t let on that they’re
remotely aware how mad they’re
being. There’s also a fair bit of weirdly
aggressive audience abuse in this
show, so if you’re faint of heart, sit at
the back.
That said, when the trio is not being
too self-referential and just acts out
their better sketches, they’re good.
The accents are amusing, the outfits
are ridiculous and even the singing is
fun. Sketches like the guy in the
nightclub arguing with his left and
right brain (his higher-reason faculties
and his penis, respectively), and the
talk show featuring a stuttering
government minister and a Helen
Zille-type discussing how to deal with
a tsunami more than 200m high,
make you wish they’d just got on with
more of this from the start.
So it has its moments, but it’s pretty
hit and miss.
» The Rise of the Insanity League runs at Pieter
Toerien’s Main Theatre at Montecasino until
August 11. Tickets cost between R100 and R160

AFRICA and WORLD WIDE
It seems her voice was tailor-made
for emotional songs, just listen to this
album to get my point. Mtambo is a
gifted vocalist and reminds me of
Anita Baker in her delivery.
I couldn’t stomach the pop rock
attempt You Can Be, as it breaks
with the album’s mood and spirit.
I was left wanting due to this
album lacking some punch to take
it a notch higher. Some of the songs
are forgettable, but her voice is
something to marvel at. 6/10
– Lesley Mofokeng
one of the biggest stars from the show
with her brand of Afro-pop fuelled by
megahits Ndawo Yami and Ndoni Yamanzi.
There have been other delightful tracks
such as Ye Wena Sani that cemented her
place as a bona fide pop star. She has
faded somewhat from the scene and this
best of release marks a comeback of sorts.
It has four new songs – the sweet love
ballad Akekho, the playful Shake Shake,
the high tempo dance-friendly Laku
Tshon’Ilanga and the Afro-beat Fela. Not a
spectacular return, not too bad either. 7/10
