OUR MISSION: TO LIVE AS JESUS TEACHES
PRODIGAL FATHER, PRODIGAL SON
Today’s Gospel captures beautifully the meaning of this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Just look
at the banner in the Basilica! The merciful father is as prodigal and extravagant with his forgiveness as
the younger son was with his inheritance.
Often we focus just on the sins of the younger son in this powerful story: he’s reckless, selfish, licentious.
It’s easy to recognize his sins, both in the story and around us today. However, we tend to overlook the
sins of the older brother: self-righteousness, lack of compassion, anger. This parable was directed to the
Pharisees and scribes, who were so quick to point out when others failed to follow the letter of the law,
while frequently ignoring the spirit of the law themselves. This is echoed in our own tendencies to faithfully follow the rules but fail to give our hearts to God, and so are reluctant to forgive, offer someone
another chance, show mercy. The loving father embraces both sons, both sinners, and wants to reconcile
everyone.
There is a third type of sin in this story, hidden behind the scenes but an important part of the younger
son’s difficult journey: the social sin of exploitation of the vulnerable. The youth, after he had squandered
his money, was forced into a job that was worse than demeaning. Swine were unclean animals in the
Jewish religion; to feed pigs was a defilement of his integrity and beliefs, and even then he was denied
adequate food. Unfortunately we have many opportunities today to observe social sin in the acceptance
of human trafficking (by how we spend our money) and denial of human rights to refugees.
The question is not “Whether I am a sinner?” since we are all sinners. Instead, the
question is “What is my sin?” In these remaining weeks of Lent let us spend time on
that question, take advantage of the many opportunities to celebrate the sacrament of
Reconciliation, and rediscover the merciful face of the Father.
Have a blessed week,
Fr. George Alengadan
RCIA UPDATE: THE SECOND SCRUTINY
On the Fourth Sunday of Lent, the Elect (those throughout the world preparing for Baptism
this Easter) celebrate the Second Scrutiny. “The Scrutinies are celebrated in order to
deliver the Elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and
to give them strength in Christ….” (RCIA 141) As part of the Scrutiny to be celebrated at
the 7pm Mass, the Gospel tonight (taken from Cycle A) tells of the man born blind, who in
spite of, or perhaps because of, his physical blindness was able to see that Jesus was the
One who could help him. Is our vision as good? What are we unable or unwilling to see?
At the Easter Vigil, our Elect Andrea Ruport will be baptized, confirmed and receive First Eucharist. In
addition, candidate Killian Mancera who was baptized in another tradition will be received into full communion of the Catholic Church. Within the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults we have other candidates and
catechumens who are continuing to prepare for the sacraments of initiation sometime in the future.
Newcomers are welcome to join Inquiry sessions, which will resume on Wednesday nights starting March 30.
Visit our website www.sjbalameda.org or call Anne Marie at 995-9409 for information.
The beautiful cement work
in front of the church steps
was done by an Alumni of
SJND. He graciously provided us a discount as a donation to the
parish. The original cost was about $10,000, but he did the job
for $6500.00. Funds were used from the bequest donated by the
late Florence Dodge which are allocated for Basilica use only.

Inviting all Families! Take part in the Family Mass on Easter Sunday
Families are needed to help as readers and greeters at our next Family Mass on Easter Sunday. There will be TWO Family Masses: 9:30am in the Basilica and 9:45am in the Learning Center. Families and children are invited to take an active
part in the Mass - no experience necessary, but rehearsal is required for readers.

Welcome The Stranger – Refugee Support Team:
Saint Joseph Basilica’s Faith In Action Committee, with the support of our Pastor is organizing a team of
volunteers to collaborate with Catholic Charities of the East Bay to fulfill the call of Pope Francis and Bishop
Barber for each parish to accept responsibility to help just one refugee family transition into a new life in the
United States. The Faith in Action Committee is planning a meeting of all who are interested in this project on
March 14, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Joseph Elementary School Learning Center. If you are interested,
please sign up on our sign-up sheet or contact Anna Rossi at 510-814-1038 or [email protected]
SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEK FOR CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES
This collection supports six Catholic agencies that touch more than 100 million lives around the world. The funds from
this collection help provide food to the hungry, support to the displaced refugees, and Christ’s love and respect to all
people. Next week, please give generously to the Catholic Relief Services Collection and help Jesus in disguise.
DON’T FORGET TO TURN YOUR CLOCKS ONE HOUR
AHEAD MARCH 13 SO YOU WILL BE ON TIME NEXT
WEEKEND FOR MASS.
THANK YOU so much for your generous support
of November’s special collection for the Catholic
Campaign for Human Development. Many remained
after Mass to view the video and learn about the issues, the
needs, and the work your support makes possible. St. Joseph
contributed $3,609, more than double our 2014 contribution of
$1,432. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the
national anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops
which works to break the cycle of poverty by helping lowincome people participate in decisions that affect their lives,
families and communities. CCHS offers a hand up , not a hand
out. Your helping hand made a difference.

Season of Blessing to Devota AM Rhein Age 109 Birthday Celebration
St. Joseph’s family had the honor of blessing Devota at her home Sunday,
February 28th by Father George and the Legion of Mary and Saturday Prayer
Team. She was born January 26, 1907.
It is an honor and great joy to be with one of St. Joseph’s amazing parishioners, a
matriarch and bedrock of our parish community. Devota Rhein is the mother of
four daughters and one son. On her 100th birthday she received Pope Benedict
XVI Holiness Apostolic Blessing.
The bible promises abundant blessings for those who trust in God and walk with
him and truly we see this in the life of Devota. She shared her God given talents
and worked in the parish office at St. Joseph’s Basilica for many years and attended the Tuesday prayer meetings at St.
Joseph Basilica with Sr. Ann Nguyen. On Saturdays, The Legion of Mary takes communion, the Eucharist to her weekly
and our prayers intercede, for her continual strength, Health and Wellness. Clearly, Jesus has blessed her life. Her
daughter shared with us that her mother was always a hard worker. I have a deep appreciation for her contributions
and devotions to the church. On Sunday it was truly a joy to celebrate with her as she sat with us and as she read her
birthday card she was filled with a deep blessing of peace, harmony and a radiated
beacon of light. Truly living under Jesus’ Lordship brings blessings and long life
Christ inspired joy. The good news is our Heavenly Father has a plan and a purpose
for our life we cannot foresee what our Lord has in mind and we may not comprehend the importance of what he asks of us, he will shower us with blessings as we
stay in communion with him. He wants to do the same for all believers. Devota is a
wonder spiritual blessing we have witnessed and experienced.

P.S. Devota looks forward to reading our bulletin every week!

UPDATE ON ST. JOSEPH ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL PRINCIPAL SEARCH COMMITTEE
The members of the New Principal Search
Committee have met twice. They met with Mrs.
Penny Pendola from the HR Department of the
diocese to review the timeline of this process, and
they are now working on reviewing applications and
resumes of prospective candidates
To my St. Joseph Parish Community,
It has been such a blessing to be part of this community, and
has been one of the most rewarding and memorable times in
my career. The opportunity to be a member of this family
whose focus is dedicated to the growth of the parish and to the
education of our children has been a gift and grace to me.
The time has come for me to take the next step in my journey
at the end of this school year and re-enter retirement with my
husband in beautiful northern California at the base of Mount
Shasta. They say that “all journeys have a secret destination of
which the traveler is unaware.” SJES has turned out to be my
secret destination.
Father George in conjunction with the school department has
begun the process of selecting a new principal who will carry on
the traditions of this incredible school.
Again, I thank each and every one of your for the support and
encouragement you have given to me from the first day I came.
I am better for having known you – “Some people come into our
lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while,
leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never
ever the same.” [Flavia Weedn]
I will hold the St. Joseph Community in prayer
as your journey continues.
In peace,
Marilyn Marchi, Principal, SJES
