who was the Australian Human Rights
Commissioner from 2014 until his
resignation in 2016. He was a policy director
of the Institute of Public Affairs for seven
years and has since been appointed to
represent the Liberal Party in the seat of
Goldstein in the forthcoming election.

Colin Stimpson: Man Behind the Badge
I
t’s always enlightening hearing the story of the Man Behind the Badge
even if he is to be forgiven for being a Hawthorn supporter!
Colin started out conservatively as a Mechanical Engineer who grew up in
humble beginnings in the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. He began a
22 year stint of his working career with Mobile Oil and Exxon where he was
stationed originally in Altona. After a variety of roles he became responsible
for logistics and operations. He took a while to discover his sense of purpose
and eventually discovered that project management, and management
in general, was his niche. Having applied himself well he earned the
opportunity to work overseas, following the trend of many engineering
graduates. Colin was fortunate enough to work in every Asian country
except Myanmar.
While working overseas his long-term girlfriend decided to join him on a
holiday to Thailand when he convinced her to live with him in Singapore.
They soon got engaged and married, spending the next 10 years in Asia,
immersed in a variety of fascinating different cultures. Amazingly Colin
managed to supervise teams who spoke little to no English by being
resourceful and a true manager: one who understands his reports. He soon
learned that despite the language gulf these guys were similar to Aussies:
loving their sport, never turning down the opportunity to have a drink and
always ensuring that they go to all lengths to be available to hang out with
the boys. The funniest extreme was the night the boys were drinking away
in bliss when suddenly a colleague jumped up, looking horrified he ran out
of the pub to return about 20 minutes later explaining that he’d realised
that is was his anniversary and he’d forgotten his wife. But all was well. He
went home and told her that he was out celebrating his anniversary with
his workmates - and that was all in order! With this ability to connect with
people Colin is naturally able be an effective motivational manager. This
innate skill to understand and mentor others led Colin to establish the social
enterprise Picking and Warehousing Solutions (PAWS). As observed by Colin,
the mindset of the young today is very different, even in Asia, with chopping
and changing jobs being viewed positively as the quickest and easiest way
to get ahead. Gone are the days of the 20 year golden watch reward.

juvenile justice system
and registered care
providers, the essential
PAWS’ mission is to
convert unemployable
young people into
successful job seekers
in the logistics sector.
It operates a warehouse
and distribution centre
in Dandenong South.
Donations from
clothing retailers of
end of line stock are
sorted, classified
and marketed via the PAWS website and on eBay. PAWS employs those
referred, teaching them work skills, life coping skills and restoring self
respect.
Colin’s characteristic nature that led him to engineering is part of an
ingrained thinking that carries him in every success. He is driven by
managing each enterprise like a project with strict measurables. It took
some time for Colin to get used to the Not-For-Profit sector but after
determining that he was a Not-For-Loss also and applying his techniques
he grew PAWS into another thriving venture.
Likewise, it has been quite an eye opener for Colin to see how much
Rotary, as a charitable organisation, achieves.
Colin hasn’t abandoned his involvement with Asia. His enterprising mind
has turned to establishing a business utilising the huge network he
created whilst living there. He now marries venture capitalists from
Australia who wish to invest in Asia so that Australian businesses can
expand to that region.
A further project we did not get time to hear about fully was the property
development in Rosebud. Colin is grounded at times by his teenage
daughter (15) and son (13), who still manage to challenge his sense of
control. Like all parents who ride this wave he gets great satisfaction of
witnessing their growth, literally and figuratively, into terrific young adults.
The family has only been in Brighton since 2002 but have developed a
keen interest in all the bay activities offered.

TUDENTS FROM BRIGHTON
SECONDARY SPEAK ABOUT THEIR
RYPEN EXPERIENCE
Last week we heard from two girls from Brighton Secondary College Sarah
Mott and Siobhan Kelleghan-Tasker who went to a RYPEN Camp and
who were introduced by Stuart McMillan. Here are some notes from their
presentation:

REPORT

welcomed everyone to the Rotary
Club of Brighton.
Barry then welcomed Sarah Mott
and Siobhan Kelleghan-Tasker who
recently attended a RYPEN camp and were
there to share with us their experiences.
Barry said at the previous meeting our guest speaker was our
very own PP Geoff McGeary who provided a very entertaining talk
about his entrepreneurial life. At 19 he began driving buses in his
father’s business and from that day forward Geoff became a master at
identifying and capitalizing on business opportunity after opportunity
and today runs a global tourism empire.
Barry said it had been 3 weeks since he had presided over a club
meeting and he had to say that he was delighted with what had been
achieved in his absence and should probably go away more often.
Last week was our ‘Night of The Stars’ fundraiser and once
again PP Paul Nicholson and his team did not disappoint the guests,
delivering a very entertaining night. Barry said If we don’t believe him,
ask David Finney who one could have been forgiven for thinking he
was stalking the photographer and special guests all night.
Paul had a terrific line up of sports stars including Brian Lake
who replaced Essendon’s Dyson Heppell, which was a blessing in
disguise as Barry thought he was the most entertaining of all the stars,
and gave rise to some healthy banter among the panel of stars.
Our Platinum sponsor Mercedes-Benz Brighton really added to
the excitement of the night. They brought down a fleet of wonderful
cars including a very sexy sports car that was parked in the dining
room and admired by the guests all night. Basketball sensation
Lauren Jackson was delightfully engaging and cheeky. Especially
when she had her photo taken with our vertically challenged member
PP Tony Nanfra. Tony quickly rose to the challenge by drawing in his
own team of gentle giants in Colin Stimpson and Dale Hoy. Not
sure where Wayne Sanderson was but had he been there they would
definitely have had enough tall timber to have the baseline on the
basketball court covered.
Barry thanked Paul for all of his hard work and thanked his
committee who Barry knew put a huge amount of effort into pulling
together such a terrific night. Last week Director of International
Erik Vandenberg also launched the clubs crowd funding campaign.
A campaign which is a wonderful legacy of PP Bill Howley’s year.
Why has this project come about? Barry said we wanted to ensure that
the late Gerhard Sommer’s legacy lived on – which Barry was sure
we would agree we are doing.
Barry said we wanted to provide deserving university students with
an opportunity to do some good which in turn would enable us to do
some good. We have achieved that and now the final step is over the
next three months we hope to crowd fund by sending our message out
as far and wide around the world as possible.
The ultimate plan is to raise funds through crowd funding, from
other clubs and the general public, and then look to double our money
with a global grant through Foundation. To make this ambitious plan
come true they will need our help to spread the word as far and wide
as possible via email and if we have it via Linkedin and Facebook.
Barry will send us an email next week with some information on how
we could help and hopefully by many investing a small amount of time,
together we will make an ambitious plan come true.
Barry then invited Geoff Bentley to the lectern to brief the
members on what he had planned this year for the Brighton Lunch
and also invited Community Director Dale Hoy to address the
membership about the proposed distribution of funds from Geoff’s
event.
Geoff Bentley: The Brighton Lunch - “Brave Heart”
Geoff gave us an update on the lunch. He said it was named ‘Brave
Heart’ for a very good reason having
keynote speakers in Rosie Batty, 33rd most
inspirational leader in the world, Tom Elgin
Paralympic amputee athlete won 4 medals
at 3 Paralympics, Sam O’Sullivan a talented
VFL footballer is one of only seven people
worldwide to survive super aggressive flesheating bacteria and Emma Murray mother
of Will Murray who jumped off a pier which
resulted in him suffering from quadriplegia.
The local community has got behind this
appeal for Will’s family and Geoff wants to
help the Will Murray Foundation and the
Rosie Batty Foundation and he feels our
Rotary club will get good recognition for our
event and Rotary in general being seen as
a good avenue for raising funds for good
causes.
Dale Hoy: The Brighton Lunch - What
will happen with the proceeds.
Dale said that the board recently approved
that 50% of the proceeds raised from the
lunch will go to the Will Murray Foundation
which has a recently setup website: www.wheretheresawill.com.au/
The foundation was set up by Greg Miller CEO of Richmond Football
Club and Martin Jolly who is on the board of Hawthorn. Dale expects
our event will have a lot of Bayside support. Dale then asked for a
show of hands and the motion on the fund allocation was carried.
Barry thanked Dale and Geoff. He wished Geoff all the best with
what he thinks is going to be a spectacular event.
The annual golf weekend at Cape Schank was held on the 18 &
19 of March and Barry believed congratulations went to Nic Mardling
for winning day one, PP Ivan Vojlay for winning day two and Nic
won the overall event on a countback. While talking of Ivan, he hosted
the Hackers annual awards lunch on Saturday 2 April. There were
many awards given out on the day but the two of significance were PP
Arthur Hubbard for winning the Most into the water award which
Barry understood was an award for hitting the most golf balls into the
water. Congratulations also goes to Ron Stark who won the Hacker
of the Year Award. Well done Ivan and Judy for hosting such a lovely
afternoon and thanks to Bruce Crossley for being a sterling team
Captain for the year.
The Rotary Youth in Sailing weekend was held while Barry was
away and this year with the support of Mercedes-Benz Brighton,
11 children came to Brighton from regional Victoria to experience
sailing on the bay. Unfortunately gale force winds made it unsafe to
sail. The young people still got a great deal out of the trip and thanks
to Bronwyn Stephens who gave a terrific presentation on how Rotary
makes a real difference in third world countries the kids walked away
with a terrific insight into the power of Rotary and some look forward
to going on one of her World of Difference tours. Barry also said well
done to Norm Thomas.
Barry also played a clip of the sailing event, which was kindly filmed
and produced by our very talented prospective member Amaro Amro
and his company Amaro Media. Barry was sure we would all agree,
that the video painted a wonderful picture of the great work our club
does. Barry said Amaro was going to be a real asset to our club.

PP Geoff McGeary: Sarg heard he gave quite a good talk last week
and on the strength of it Sarg is off on one of Geoff’s cruises in August
with 150 people;
PP David Efron: Sarg asked why he didn’t get raffle tickets last week.
David replied that he was an old man and didn’t deserve some. Sarg
said “Guess how much that is going to cost you”;
Jodi Ryan: Sarg apologised for not being around for her induction but
noted that she and Graeme Watson were meant to be catching up over
coffee and Graeme didn’t turn up. Sarg fined Graeme;
David Finney: Sarg said David’s photos taken at the ‘Night of Stars’
was everywhere in the Bulletin;
Ron Stark: Won Hackers golf award and Sarg thought you shouldn’t
get awards for just playing 9 holes each week;
PP Arthur Hubbard: Did he win an award for hitting the golf ball in the
water too many times?;
Tony Rouse: Marine Hotel sold for just under $13mill previous week
and Sarg thought that underbidders Graeme Watson and PP Ian Mence
could have put up a better bid;

Paul started off by thanking resident Graphic

raffle tickets menu etc. Paul also thanked his

Hill (Auction), Cameron Ward, (Paul’s 2IC and
photographer), Ivan Vojlay (photographer), Roger
Fairlam (general tables), Alan Jarrott, Brett

He also thanked Mac Chapman, Norm Thomas
for signing up Mercedes-Benz Brighton in the

more.Many thanks also to Geoff McGeary for his
European River Cruise live auction prize which
really helped the bottom line. They were still
counting but it looks like around $52,000 profit.

of them but he and Pat are quickly losing their
hair through stress. If you have any issues

he looked like one of the Wiggles;
Alan Jarrott: Sarg noted that he must have had help tying the knot his
bow tie the previous week;
PP Ian Mence: Having his car serviced more regularly and wants to
check it all out himself to see if they do a proper job;
PP Des Thomas: Complained to Sarg that the wrong date was put in
Bulletin for his anniversary. Editor Max fined;

EVERY ROTARIAN SHOULD KNOW:
“ROTARY FLOAT IN ROSE PARADE”
The Rotary International float in the annual Tournament of Roses
Parade is undoubtedly the largest public relations project of the
Rotary clubs of the United States and Canada. Since 1924 a
Rotary float has been entered 18 times including every year since
1981. The famous Pasadena, California, parade is seen by an
estimated 125 million people via worldwide television.
Funds for the construction of the Rotary parade entry are
voluntarily given by Rotarians and clubs in the U.S. and Canada.
The cost of designing, constructing and flower covering a Rose
Parade float begins at about $120,000.
A multi-district Rotary committee in Southern California
coordinates planning of the Rotary float and provides hundreds
of volunteer hours of service. The Rotary float must portray the
annual parade theme, usually depicting one of the worldwide
service programs of Rotary International.
Each New Year’s Day, Rotarians take pride in seeing their
attractive float and realize they have shared in its construction
by contributing a dollar or two to this beautiful public relations
project.

IVAN’S HACKERS
Saturday 09 April 2016
11 members of the Group arrived at Brighton and headed into a morning
of “highs and lows” (in terms of scoring that is) and onto the Pre Game
Putting competition to begin the round. Tom Buxton, cooly, produced a
clear winner with his “hole in one” for which he was duly congratulated.
That was where the award plaudits finished for all except for David Lee
who blitzed us.
David was awarded the morning’s Vojlay-Cole Trophy for his Long
Drive, along with his Nearest The Pin drive and for is Off The Stick
score, 37 shots for the round, which converted to a winning Handicap
score of 27. Commendable Off The Stick scorers included Cameron
Spence (41), Ron Stark and Ian Cole (both 46), Daryl Forge (47) and
Graeme Watson (48 ) who was also 2nd to David Lee, on Handicap (29)
and 3rd on Handicap, was Ron Stark.
It was back to the coffee break, when once again David Lee was to the
fore and awarded the trophy for his prowess in the Summer Eclectic
Competition.
From there it was revealed that Ivan Vojlay had joined the “in The Water”
club on the Venus hole. A playing partner (no name mentioned in case
of retribution) noted that Ivan had taken aim at the green, 153 metres
ahead of him and his stance, determination, focus and steely approach to
the ball, produced a shot that he could almost be proud of, except that it
rested some 115 metres short of the target, in Arthur Hubbard’s Lake.
Not to be deterred, Ivan soon forgave himself and on the next hole, the
last of the round, he produced a “gobbler” to end on a “high”.
Ron Stark’s group reported that he had almost come up with a reason
to add his name to the Venus Trophy but his shot to birdie, missed by a
whisker. Next time eh Ron?
When asked about his joy on the course, Paul Nicholson was quick to
respond... “good, except for the last 7 holes”.
Graeme Watson, whilst playing well, produced a driving highlight that
he may wish to forget, but sadly we can’t let him off the hook. On the 5th,
Graeme, fired off what appeared be very well struck, except that the ball
ended up 2 metres in front of him. He had hurtled into a sturdy tree which
sent the ball directly back to him as quickly as it was dispatched.
Some housekeeping. We understand that Bruce Crossley’s injured
shoulder may be repairing well enough to see him back with us next
Saturday. We hope so in order to tell him about our thanks for the past
year as Captain and for the good will and enjoyment (and the biscuits and
fruit initiatives) that he adds to the Saturday mornings.
This coming week, we understand that a number of our Ivan’s Hackers
Group will be honing their skills at Marysville.
For those not going to Marysville..... We will be at Brighton at the usual
time and we expect the return of our Team photographer, whose place has
been ably taken this last week, by David Lee. Thanks David. Ray Street
