RICHARD
FINE
Chairman’s Foreword
HAGEN
Welcome to this, the third Broadway Arts Festival.
The format of the festival is evolving, we hope in a direction
which appeals to both the local community and, increasingly,
to a much wider national and international audience. Our aim
is both to entertain and educate, celebrating Broadway's
significant artistic heritage, and, as a charity, to raise money to
fund local students entering a career in the arts.
PAINTINGS
On offer is a wide variety of exhibitions and events, some of
which are inspired by this year's theme, ‘Changing Times’,
relating to that period prior to August 1914 when the world was changing, both
artistically and socially. All, in my view, unmissable. Do join us!
John Noott - Chairman of Trustees

Festival Director’s welcome
The opening last year of the Ashmolean Museum Broadway provides
the village with yet another reason to celebrate the legacy of our
historic and cultural heritage. Tudor House, the home of the museum,
is itself a wonderful building and I am delighted that the Ashmolean
has brought together an exhibition of watercolours and sketches by
John Singer Sargent, the acclaimed American artist who had strong
affiliation with this village. The opening of the exhibition, which will be
here for two months, coincides with the first day of Broadway Arts
Festival 2014 on 30th May 2014.
Planning and arranging the events which are described in this programme is a formidable task
and enormous thanks and gratitude are due to the Arts Festival Trustees, the Management
Committee and all the many volunteers who have worked so hard to bring it all together.
Broadway village is a beautiful place and attracts visitors from all over the world. We who live
and work here today owe much to those who, over the years, have celebrated its charms and
created a legacy of art, music, architecture and literature with which to enrich us. The aim of the
Festival is to perpetuate this inheritance and inspire others to keep the legacy alive.
I do hope you will enjoy sharing it with us.

'Butterfly, Bee, Lily, Rose'
by Pink Harrison
Much praise should also be given to all the local artists who,
under the guidance and persuasion of Arabella Kiszely,
produced all the different pieces to create the magnificent
collage of John Singer Sargent's painting Carnation, Lily, Lily,
Rose. This was unveiled to great acclaim at our Press Launch
and can be viewed throughout the Festival at 36 High Street,
Broadway. The names of the artists are listed in the
acknowledgements page of this programme.
Many thanks also, to Richard Christie who donated the frame
for Pink Harrison's picture and loaned the magnificent frame for
the Sargent collage. t

THE ASHMOLEAN
MUSEUM BROADWAY
The Ashmolean Museum Broadway opened its
doors to the public in Autumn 2013. It is launching
its first exhibition as part of Broadway Arts Festival
with ‘John Singer Sargent: Portraits and Travels’. This
is a small collection of watercolours and sketches
John Singer Sargent made while on his travels, of
scenes and portraits of the characters he met along
his way.
This exhibition launches our rolling exhibitions
programme and will complete the unique collection
in Tudor House which is the home to the museum. The building was originally a coaching inn, in the late
1600s, and the collection is across the breadth of time periods from that date until the current day when it
has been the home of H.W. Keil Antiques.
John Singer Sargent RA was part of a colony of artists and actors, many of them Americans, who based
themselves in Broadway during the late 1800s. The colony included Alfred Parsons, George Boughton,
Edwin Abbey and Francis Millet. During this time Sargent painted one his most famous paintings Carnation,
Lily, Lily, Rose, which is now on display at the Tate.

A History of Broadway in Words and Pictures
from the 1880s to 1914
The story begins with William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones who introduced
a glittering array of artistic, literary and musical figures to Broadway in the 1880s,
lured by its mellow beauty and idyllic way of life. John Singer Sargent joined the
group in 1885 and painted his iconic work Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose here. This
exhibition follows the rise of the members of that colony and traces their legacy
and the history of Broadway up to the outbreak of War in 1914.
Open: 10.00am to 4.00pm, daily
Location: The Drawing Room, The Lygon Arms, WR12 7DU

‘CHANGING TIMES’
AT THE GORDON RUSSELL
DESIGN MUSEUM
As part of this year’s Broadway Arts Festival, the
museum has an exhibition to mark the arrival of the
Russell family as owners of The Lygon Arms in 1904.
Gordon’s father made changes and improvements
to the hotel to attract the growing crowd of motorists
travelling the country. The visitor book includes
Bernard Shaw, Rudyard Kipling, Flinders Petrie and
Henry Ford, and a keen exponent of the motor car,
Lord Montagu of Beaulieu.
As a centre of artistic and literary activity, Broadway offered a stimulating environment for the young Gordon.
He developed a life-long appreciation for craftsmanship and enjoyed watching the restoration of antiques
by locals in the workshop set up by his father. These men, including the foreman Jim Turner, educated
Gordon on the value of good design.
‘The Church in the Village, The Village in the Church’
A full house of small exhibitions, demonstrating how much goes on in the
Broadway community - arts and sports, leisure and learning, U3A to Girl Guides.
A dynamic reminder of the strong ties between Church and Village, Village

Music at The Crown and Trumpet
Gordon only had a decade to appreciate this connection between materials and the finished object, before
the world changed. In 1914 he signed up for service with the Worcestershire Regiment.
The award-winning CAMRA pub, in Church Street, will be hosting a number of
jazz and blues evening entertainments throughout the Festival. Come and
sample a glass of real ale in traditional surroundings, and enjoy good music

Keil Ltd, dealers in antique furniture. The museum will host ‘Portraits and Travels’

Astrid Trügg and Others
Astrid Trügg was born in Utrecht in 1972 and studied at the Utrecht School of
Art. This was followed by a successful artistic career in the Netherlands. Latterly
while working in Scotland she made numerous visits to Cornwall and
consequently became interested in the St Ives group and the work of Ben
Nicholson in particular. Her still lifes, a feature of her work, owe much to this
group of artists.

A children’s art competition is being held, involving Broadway First School and
St Mary’s Catholic Primary School. The theme is ‘Flowers’ or ‘A picture of Flora’
and prize-giving is on 4th April, at which a Victorian parlour song will be sung;
the significance is that it was from this popular song that John Singer Sargent
took the title of his painting Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose.

We hope the children will perform the song again, on the Village Green, after
the parade down the High Street on 14th June.

Garden Tour of Court Farm
A talk and tour of a historically significant, magnificent Broadway garden, by
Marion Mako, an eminent garden historian and designer.
Court Farm is one of the village’s most beautiful and important gardens, hidden
from view behind the iconic topiary hedges of the early twentieth century. Here,
the Shakespearian actress Mary Anderson de Navarro, together with her great
friend, the painter and designer, Alfred Parsons RA, set about creating a garden
of intimate spaces. As it evolved, farmyard detritus was replaced by drifts of soft
planting and sweet-smelling roses, and this has been continued by Mary’s
descendants. Elsewhere, historic elements have been restored and the luxuriant
planting regenerated. Court Farm is a quintessential garden of the Edwardian
era and today it still evokes the spirit of that ‘golden afternoon’.
The Florentine Arts Ensemble offers an informative musical and visual
presentation. The performance will consist of violin sonatas by Fauré, Debussy
and Ravel, with illustrations and explanations of John Singer Sargent’s links to
the composers, and his talents as a pianist.
Liv-Marie Kodurand - violinist and director - graduated from the Royal Academy
of Music with distinction, having won many prizes. She is greatly in demand as
a solo recitalist and concerto performer at prestigious venues in London and
throughout the U.K. Liv-Marie performs on a Joseph Albani violin, c.1721.
Jan Rautio - pianist - studied in Moscow and then at the Royal College and Royal
Academy of Music in London, where he also won many prizes. He is a critically
acclaimed soloist, accompanist and chamber musician, and his concerto
performances include the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich.

and a wildfowl-friendly lake.
Designer Rosemary Verey was commissioned to create an intricate parterre for
the terrace, while more recently, the garden has been updated with many classic
as well as modern elements, sensitively woven into this historic space.

Broadway Remembers
In the spring of 1911 the population of
Broadway, measured by the census of that
year was 1,793. Three years later, on 4th
August 1914, Great Britain declared war on
Germany and by the end of the following
month the Evesham Journal published the
names of the thirteen men from Broadway
who had enlisted in the first few weeks of the
war. By the end of the war around 300 men
from the village had enlisted and were fighting
in conflicts across Europe, Africa and the
Middle East. The war memorial, paid for by
public subscription, was erected in 1920 on
the village green and commemorates 48 men
from the village who lost their lives in the First
World War. Broadway Remembers, which is
being published in a book, pays tribute to
those men and provides a glimpse a glimpse
of the world in which they lived and died.

Holmwood is the eclectic, quirky garden of artist and lecturer Doug Eyre.
Originally set out in the ‘50s, the small garden wraps around Doug’s

elements of fun, such as a topiary elephant and sculpted sheep.

John Hammond SWAc. Masterclass –
Still Life/Garden Painting Demonstration in Acrylics
The Solem Quartet came together at Manchester University and then the Royal
Northern College of Music. The quartet has had success in several important
competitions and has an increasingly busy concert schedule, performing at
venues across the UK including the Wigmore Hall and recently in Vienna.
John Hammond is one of Britain’s leading landscape painters working in acrylics,
and has written an excellent book about his working methods entitled ‘Capturing
Light in Acrylics’. He always seeks to convey the particular qualities of light and
atmosphere he encounters. The dappled light of a French café scene and the
shimmer of reflections on Venetian waters are captured with a vibrant palette and
assured brushwork, and the Cotswold countryside often features.
The Zelkova Quartet was also founded at the Royal Northern College of Music,
where they completed an International Artist Diploma in Chamber Music. They
have performed in Paris, Vienna and Oslo, and have broadcast on Radio 3 –
including this January, playing Vaughan Williams’ ‘On Wenlock Edge’.

Garden Tour of Court Farm
A talk and tour of a historically significant, magnificent Broadway garden,
by Marion Mako, an eminent garden historian and designer.

Garden Tour of The Orchard Farm
A talk and tour of one of the largest and most impressive Broadway gardens,
by Marion Mako, an eminent garden historian and designer.
David Curtis
Throughout the twentieth century, successive owners of The Orchard Farm have
sought to tame the wilderness. Deftly integrating the formal and informal, this
garden contains fabulous topiary as well as a kitchen garden, rushing streams
and a wildfowl-friendly lake. Designer Rosemary Verey was commissioned to
create an intricate parterre for the terrace, while more recently, the garden has
been updated with many classic as well as modern elements, sensitively woven
into this historic space. Like Court Farm, the garden has played host to many
important visitors, including HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, but The
Orchard Farm has not been open to the public, until now.
