Internet Activities
Social networking proved to be the most popular activity among 16 to 24 year old Internet users in 2011, with 91
percent saying they took part in social networking on websites such as Facebook or Twitter. However, this was
not an activity limited to the younger age groups, with almost one fifth (18 percent) of Internet users aged 65 and
over indicating that they participated in social networking. Overall, social networking was more popular among
women, at 60 percent, than men, at 54 percent.
Men were more likely to participate in professional networking over sites such as LinkedIn in 2011, with 16
percent of male Internet users having used this online facility compared to just 9 percent of women. It was most
popular among those aged 25 to 34, with 18 percent using these sites.
Using the Internet to sell goods or services, for example via auction sites such as eBay, saw large growth in
2011. Over 12 million people, at 31 percent of Internet users, sold goods or services online, compared to 7.9
million (21 percent) in 2010. Just under half of those aged 25 to 34 (45 percent) used the Internet for this activity.
Just over one in five (21 percent) Internet users made telephone or video calls online in 2011. This activity is one
which is not dominated by a specific age group, with older age groups showing similar patterns of use to the
younger age groups. Of those aged 65 and over, 17 percent used this technology, compared to 22 percent of
those under 24.
Internet Purchasing
In 2011, 32 million people (66 percent of all adults) purchased goods or services over the Internet. This was an
increase from 62 percent in 2010.
Clothes/sporting goods were the most popular online purchase in 2011, with 46 percent of Internet users buying
these items. Half of female Internet users (50 percent) purchased clothes/sporting goods online in 2011, the
most popular purchase by women by some margin.
While clothes/sporting goods were also the most popular purchase by men, at 43 percent of Internet users, this
was closely followed by films/music at 40 percent.
Those aged 65 and over were the only age group not to report clothes/sporting goods as the most popular
purchase. Instead, 29 percent of Internet users in this age group favoured the online purchase of ‘other travel
arrangements’ which includes flights, car hire and other transport tickets. Holiday accommodation was also
popular, with over a quarter (26 percent) of this group using the Internet to book this.
Users and non-­users
At 2012 Q2, there were 42.52 million adults in the UK who had ever used the Internet, representing 84 percent
of the adult population. The 7.82 million adults who had never used the Internet represented 16 percent of the
adult population. There was a decrease, since 2012 Q1, of 298,000 adults (4 percent) who had never used the
Internet and a decrease of 904,000 (10 percent) compared with a year earlier (2011 Q2).
Age and sex
Age has a sizeable effect on an individual's likelihood to engage with the Internet. Almost all adults aged 16 to
24 years (99 percent) had ever used the Internet (7.17 million people). In contrast, only 29 percent of adults
aged 75 years and over had ever used the Internet, representing 1.33 million people.
The 3.3 million non-­users aged 75 years and over made up 42 percent of the 7.82 million people who had never
used the Internet at 2012 Q2.
Table present estimates of Internet users and non-­users by age group and sex. The tables show that whereas
Internet non-­use was relatively similar for males and females aged 16 to 64 years, Internet non-­use differed for
adults aged 65 years and over. For example, whereas 32 percent of males aged 65 to 74 years had never used
the Internet, the corresponding total for females was 42 percent, a difference of 10 percentage points. This
difference grows to 13 percentage points for males and females aged 75 years and over.

Regional Distribution
The South East and London were the regions with the highest rate of Internet use with 88 percent of adults
reporting that they had used the Internet. Northern Ireland had the lowest proportion of Internet users, at 77
percent. The estimate for Northern Ireland is markedly lower than all other regions, but is an increase on the
estimate of Internet use in Northern Ireland produced at 2011 Q2, of 73 percent. All regions have shown an
increase in Internet use over this period (2011 Q2 to 2012 Q2).

Q2, as well as enabling comparison with other regions.
Earnings
The following graph presents a breakdown of Internet users and non-­users by gross weekly pay. Of those adults
in employment whose gross weekly pay was less than £200 per week, 7 percent (355,000) had never used the
Internet. Internet use has almost reached full coverage for those earning in excess of £500 a week, with Internet
use around 98 to 99 percent for all adults with weekly pay rates above this level.

Mobile Internet Connections
There was significant growth in the adoption of mobile Internet technology over the previous 12 months, with an
extra 6 million people using their mobile phone to access the Internet than reported in 2010. The rate of growth
in the use of this technology was fastest among those aged 16 to 24, with Internet use over a mobile phone
increasing from 44 percent to 71 percent over the previous 12 months. However, there have been notable
increases across all age groups.
Since 2009, when the measurement of mobile phone Internet use in this survey began, the number of women
using mobile phones to access the Internet has more than doubled, from 18 percent of Internet users to 39
percent in 2011.
Mobile Internet use via a laptop, tablet or other portable computer also proved popular in 2011, with 38 percent
of Internet users using these mobile devices away from the home or workplace.

Wireless Hotspots
There has been significant growth in the use of wireless (wi-­fi) hotspots across Great Britain. In 2011, 4.9 million
people, or 13 percent of Internet users, connected to wireless hotspots provided at restaurants, cafes, hotels,
airports etc. The wide availability of these hotspots has encouraged large growth in use over recent years with a
seven fold increase since the 2007 estimate of 0.7 million people.
