The Leadership Longmont class
of 2015, comprised of 20 local
businessmen and women were
presented to City Council at its
meeting on May 19. This class will
be graduating on June 3rd and will
be the ninth Leadership class the
Chamber has sponsored. Please watch
for information on next year’s class
some time in October. The program
hosts one full-day class each month
from January to graduation in June. It
is an excellent opportunity to explore
the business community, our excellent
education system, city government
and numerous other exciting facets to
what makes Longmont great.

JUNE 1-5
Longmont Startup Week is a reality. From June 1st to
June 5th, the city will play host to the good and the great
of the business community, as it continues to celebrate its
ascendancy in the entrepreneurial world.
‘LSW15: The Heart of Startup’ is the theme, designed
to illustrate not only Longmont’s central location in the
northern Colorado innovation zone, but also its position
at the very heart of innovative policy and projects. From
the Longmont Area Economic Council’s visionary report
on our city’s business strategy, to the rapidly-expanding
NextLight gigabit broadband network, Longmont has
firmly positioned itself as a leading candidate for any
startup business in Colorado.
Event Director Jennifer Ferguson took the analogy one
step further: “LSW15: The Heart of Startup also reflects a
slightly different take on the Startup theme – we are not a
cold, technical environment: the community in Longmont
is incredibly supportive, and we are extremely welcoming
to new business. We really do have a lot of heart.”
The free event is organized by Startup Longmont, a
volunteer group comprising almost 300 members and
founded by TinkerMill, Colorado’s largest makerspace.
The purpose of Longmont Startup Week, says
Ferguson, is to provide education, ideas, mentoring and
motivation for all. “Startups embody many of the lessons
on offer, but you don’t have to be a tech company or a
software genius to benefit – maybe you’re starting a food
service business, you still need to know how to go from
idea to success. Or maybe you’re just interested to hear
what real experts in their fields have to say – either way,
there will be something here you can relate to.”
Longmont Compass publisher Jon Rice is organizing
the marketing and content for Longmont Startup Week.
“People say, why Longmont? I say, look around you.
This town is exploding with ideas, it’s bursting with
talented people who don’t want to commute to Boulder or
Denver every day – and organizations like the Longmont
Area Chamber of Commerce and the Longmont
Area Economic Council are working their tails off to
promote the people who rise to the challenge of starting
a business. It’s the entrepreneurial equivalent of a box of
matches and a shedload of fireworks.”
