In love with the sea
As the UK's only island city, home to great sailing and an
unparalleled collection of maritime heritage, Portsmouth
has always had a love affair with the sea.
The new Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing HQ opened for
business in June 2015 and one month later the excitement
of America’s Cup racing had arrived in Portsmouth as the
Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series took place in
front of Southsea Common to a sell-out crowd. Organised
by Team Origin, the event welcomed the six international
America’s Cup teams as they looked to make their mark in
the first event of the challenge to win the America’s Cup in
2017. The event was the first America's Cup racing to be
held in the Solent since the historic first event back in 1851.
The four-day event set new milestones in spectator numbers
with attendance reaching close to 250,000, as fans from the
local area and around the world travelled to Portsmouth to
enjoy the high octane America's Cup action. Land Rover
Ben Ainslie Racing didn’t disappoint the British fans as
they raced fantastically and were crowned winners of the
Land Rover BAR
Portsmouth event. This year’s Louis Vuitton America’s Cup
World Series Portsmouth will take place between 21-24 July
2016 and Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing (LR BAR) will be
aiming to delight the home fans again by taking the victory.
Fans can also look forward to the visitor centre within LR
BAR HQ opening in late spring 2016, which will showcase
sailing and its innovation, technology and sustainability.
The centre will be open for schools and groups to experience
the construction and on-going operation of the team’s
America’s Cup boats first-hand.
To book your ticket for the Louis Vuitton America's
Cup World Series Portsmouth, 21-24 July 2016, visit:

Why not try your own hand at sailing during a visit to the
city? Portsmouth Watersports Centre offers a great range
of sailing experiences for all abilities. If you are already an
accomplished sailor, or just like checking out the visiting
yachts and boats, make sure you visit our three marinas
at Gunwharf Quays, Port Solent and Southsea.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the
National Museum of the Royal Navy
Home to some of the most famous warships in
the world and its attractions showcasing 800 years of naval
history, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is always looking
to bring the wow factor to visitors.
For Easter 2016, the way Admiral Lord Nelson’s famous
flagship HMS Victory is presented will be changing, with
a reinterpretation of its visitor route around the ship –
the biggest change to happen to the warship since 1928.
One hundred years after the defining naval battle of the First
World War – the Battle of Jutland – the National Museum
of the Royal Navy (NMRN) will be opening a new,
blockbuster exhibition “36 hours: Jutland 1916, The Battle
That Won The War” to mark the milestone in May 2016.
Visit the rest of the museum and discover how the Royal
Navy helped to shape the modern world through stories
of courage and determination, enterprise and endeavour,
heroism and sacrifice.
The Mary Rose’s long and remarkable history will enter an exciting
phase as the wall which previously separated visitors from the ship
will be replaced with glazing, providing unrestricted views of the ship
from all nine galleries. This allows the visitor to experience the full
magnitude of the Mary Rose for the first time since she was raised from
the Solent in 1982 (the Mary Rose Museum re-opens summer 2016).
Visitors can also use the waterbus service to hop across to Gosport to
experience Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower and the Royal
Navy Submarine Museum.
www.historicdockyard.co.uk
www.nmrn.org.uk
New attraction Boathouse 4’s cathedral-like space captures
traditional boat building in action. ‘The Forgotten Craft’
exhibition brings to life stories of small heroic British naval
ships, along with rowing and lifting challenges. There is
also the chance for visitors to climb the ‘Mast & Rigging’
to the top of the Crow’s Nest (a small extra fee applies).
HMS Victory and Mary Rose Museum
First World War history enthusiasts can experience what
life was like on board Gallipoli survivor HMS M.33. The
warship is the sole remaining British veteran of the ill-fated
Dardanelles Campaign of 1915-16.
Armoured warship HMS Warrior 1860 continues to draw
in thousands of visitors every year. HMS Warrior serves as
a ship, museum, monument and private venue.
Interactive family activities continue to take place at Action
Stations and the popular Harbour Tour takes passengers up
close to today’s Royal Navy warships.

Henry VIII’s Southsea Castle
Southsea Castle was part of a series of fortifications
built in 1544 by King Henry VIII to protect the
country from invaders. This fascinating site is where Henry
VIII watched his favourite warship, the Mary Rose, tragically
capsize and sink in 1545.
Explore the underground tunnels, ramparts and panoramic
views from the top of the Keep to the Isle of Wight and Solent.
Enjoy a spot of lunch or a relaxing dinner at the Castle's
Courtyard Café and a visit to the new micro brewery. This
free seafront attraction is open from March to September.

Gunwharf Quays
D-Day Museum
Portsmouth’s D-Day Museum is Britain’s only
museum dedicated solely to covering all aspects
of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944.
D-Day was a turning point in the Second World War, with
Allied troops departing from this very stretch of seafront.
The centrepiece of this unique museum is the magnificent
Overlord Embroidery, commissioned by Lord Dulverton
of Batsford as a tribute to the sacrifice and heroism of those
men and women who took part in Operation Overlord. At
272 feet (83 metres) long the embroidery is the largest work
of its kind in the world.
The Museum's unique and dramatic film show uses archive
film to bring back memories of the wartime years. There are
also extensive displays featuring maps, uniforms and other
memorabilia and several vehicles including a rare LCVP
landing craft. Open daily.
Exciting developments to the D-Day Museum may see this
attraction close for refurbishment after September 2016.

With two harbours – both havens for wildlife – great beaches with a growing reputation
for exhilarating water sports, lovely waterfront and countryside walks and cycle rides,
this area is a great place to blow away the cobwebs and get away from it all.

Emsworth – Foodie Favourite
With its harbour, independent shops and galleries,
wonderful eating and the South Downs nearby, Emsworth
is perfect for visitors who want to spend days by the seaside
or walk in the countryside.
This picturesque market town on the River Ems is located at
the top of Chichester Harbour and has a growing reputation
as a foodie favourite with a great selection of fine dining
restaurants and public houses offering quality food at a range
of prices. Visit during the annual Emsworth British Food
Fortnight and enjoy a range of culinary events and activities
along with some truly great food!
Chichester harbour is an Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty – a sheltered, almost landlocked harbour, it is
a favourite with sailors and windsurfers of all levels.
Take a boat trip around the harbour for stunning views and
a spot of bird watching. A silent, solar powered boat, the
Solar Heritage leaves regularly from the town quay.
Emsworth is recognised as Britain’s first official Red Nose
Town – the Emsworth Red Nose weekend for Comic Relief
is now a regular event.

Discover a wide variety of specialist shops in Emsworth
ranging from fine antiques and interior design to
independent butchers, bakers, chandlers and even candle
stick makers! Shop at the monthly Farmers Market or treat
yourself to some locally caught fish, in season.
The town has a long history connected with oyster fishing
and boat building. It is popular with sailors – home to two
sailing clubs – and with artists and ramblers. Wander down
the historic streets, lined with a mixture of architectural
styles, browse in the shops and stop for a truly special bite to
eat, then stroll along the waterfront and take in the fantastic
views across the harbour.
The tidal Mill Ponds to the east and west are home to a
host of bird life as is the Brook Meadow conservation area.
The author P.G.Wodehouse lived in the town in Record Road
and his home is marked by a blue plaque. His stay in the area
is immortalised by the use of local place names in his Jeeves
and Wooster novels. You can find out more about the town’s
rich past at the local history museum open on summer
weekends above the fire station.
Staunton Park
Visit Staunton in Havant, home to the South Coast’s largest
ornamental glasshouses, beautiful gardens, an 1830s
ornamental farm that’s a great favourite with families,
and 1,000 acres of parkland to explore.
Stansted Park and House
Visit this Edwardian house set in 1,700 acres of ancient forest,
home to exciting events, fabulous weddings, open-air theatre,
concerts and cricket – played on the lawns since the 1740s.
Somewhere to stay
There are quality hotels like the Langstone, holiday villages,
a good range of independent bed & breakfasts and guest
houses like Hollybank House, and many camping and
caravanning sites. There is plenty of choice if you want to
extend your stay or make this your base for a visit to the area.

Hayling Island
Hayling Island – ideal for fun-filled family breaks.
Home to a Blue Flag beach at Beachlands, with grassy dunes
providing delightful picnic spots, the unspoilt nature of
Hayling Island waterfront is what sets it aside from many
other larger resorts. The Hayling Seaside Railway – a favourite
with families – runs from Beachlands and along the beach to
Eastoke Corner, where you can find a variety of small shops,
including the Terracotta Pot Shop, an ice cream parlour and
the Hayling Plaza where outdoor events are often held.
Treat the children to a thrilling ride at the seaside funfair.
Follow the World War Two heritage trail along the beach
front and view the COPP (Combined Operations Pilotage
Parties) memorial commemorating the wartime acts of
heroism on the island.
Windsurfing was invented here and is very popular on
the south beach along with other watersports. Hayling is
now making a name for itself as the south’s new hotspot

for kitesurfing, an exciting mix of windsurfing, surfing,
skateboarding, wakeboarding, snowboarding and

waters and consistent sea breezes. The annual Virgin Kite
Surfing Armada on the island set a Guinness World Record
for the longest line of kite surfers and holds the record for
the longest line of stand-up paddle boarders.
Other popular island activities include horse riding and golf.
Langstone Harbour to the west side of Hayling Island has a
real abundance of nature to discover, along with a fascinating
history. Follow the Hayling Billy trail or join the Langstone

Perfectly positioned on Portsmouth seafront, just 100 yards from the
beach, the Seacrest Hotel has borne witness to some of the most
prestigious events Portsmouth has ever seen. The raising of the
Mary Rose, Britannia’s last farewell and the Tour de France were
all seen from the Seacrest windows. The Great South Run starts
and finishes just across the road, the America’s Cup and Victorious
Festival take place literally along the road – if it’s happening in
Portsmouth – it makes sense to stay at the Seacrest!
When looking for a hotel room, what is it that makes up your mind to
book? We often ask our guests what comes high in their priorities –
the top three are almost always comfort, cleanliness and facilities.
You will find all three at the Seacrest, after our successful 2014/15
refurbishment. The renewed decor and interior design means that we
know you’ll love the look of your room, and that’s only the beginning.
