Fiber-reinforced composites have excellent properties to replace large tooth
defects. Adhesion to human dentin may however be compromised, especially
when applied in bulk.

SEM of a fracture surface
The majority of the specimens failed cohesively in the
composite (C).
Fibers (F) are commonly exposed on the surface and fail at
the resin-fiber interface (hand pointer).

Specimens that failed close to the interface, mainly failed at
the adhesive-composite interface (Ar), only smaller areas
failed at the resin-dentin interface (I).
High magnification SEM showing good adaptation between
the adhesive resin and the resin of the fiber-reinforced
composite (Cr).

SEM of a fracture surface
The majority of the specimens failed at the interface
between composite and adhesive resin (Ar), which might be
related to improper curing at this region due to the bulkcuring.
SEM of a fracture surface
Specimens fail either at the interface or cohesively in the
composite.
CONCLUSION
Conclusion: When applied in 4-mm bulk, the fiber-reinforced composite bonded, irrespective of the adhesive employed,
equally effective to bur-cut dentin as the conventional paste-like composite that however needed to be applied/cured in two
2-mm layers.
