SPRING / SUMMER SPOTLIGHT
Former Prestwick Park has a new name: Ailesbury Park
The park that was originally named Prestwick
Park has been renamed Ailesbury Park. The park
is located at 14238 Ailesbury Ave. Originally, the
entire development where this park is located was
named Prestwick Place, and based on this the
park in the development was named Prestwick
Park. The development was later split into two
sections, Prestwick Place and Falmoor Glen. After
review by the Parks and Recreation Commission and the City Council in late 2015,
the City Council approved re-naming the park Ailesbury Park, after the street on
which it’s located. Ailesbury Park features a large playground, zip-line, basketball
court, and several pieces of adult exercise equipment. More improvements will be
coming this spring. Be sure to check it out this summer!
Introducing Horseshoe Lake Park
The City has acquired 37 acres for a new park near Horseshoe Lake (off
Aulden Avenue). Although the site is currently undeveloped, plans are
underway to develop it in the near future.
Register the kids for summer fun
It’s not too early to register the kids for summer camps and activities.
From tennis lessons to non-stop adventures, we offer lots of ways
to keep kids active and engaged throughout the summer. Many
fill well before the listed registration deadline, so plan ahead and
secure your spot.
Free activities and family entertainment
In addition to all the fun outdoor activities families can
find on their own in our park system, we have some great
special events this summer. Look inside for details on free
concerts and movies at the Central Park Amphitheater.
Check out Puppets in the Park and Kids Corner,
offered at several parks. And don’t forget Leprechaun
Days – this year’s community celebration runs
from July 22 to July 31. Rosemount Parks and
Recreation cosponsors four FREE events for kids
during Leprechaun Days:
• Youth Shamrock Sprint with fun prizes on
Saturday, July 23 (the Family Fitness Walk
is free, too)
• Blarney Stone Hunt on Tuesday, July 26
• Wet ‘N’ Wild Day on Wednesday,

YOUTH TENNIS
USTA QuickStart Tennis Programs (ages 5-12)
All lessons are conducted at the CHARLIES PARK tennis courts
located at 3155 144th Street West. Fridays are designated as the make-up date
for classes that may be canceled during the week due to inclement weather.
Hey kids, give tennis a try this summer! QuickStart Tennis is an exciting new format for learning
tennis! To make learning tennis easier, we changed a few things. The court size, the racket size,
the balls, the scoring system and even the net height are all tailored to the child’s age and size.
This program is designed to help children find success from the very first swing. QuickStart
Tennis will also focus on the FUN of tennis through instruction, lecture, exciting games and
playing time.
NEW this Summer! We have added “Match Play Days” which is a great way for kids ages 5-12 to
play tennis in a fun, non-threatening, non-eliminating, competitive environment with other tennis
players of their age and ability. Match play is an important part of tennis. Kids will gain more
court time, learn competitive strategies, and meet new friends while brushing up on skills learned
during lessons.
Participants should provide their own youth tennis racquet. However, if you are unable to obtain a
tennis racquet for the lessons, the Parks and Recreation Department has a limited number of ageappropriate rackets that may be used. Call 651-322-6000 to reserve your racquet.

Join us for a day on the water on beautiful Lake
Minnetonka aboard the Lady of the Lake, a
historic sternwheeler. Hear a special live narration
about Lake Minnetonka from the Captain and

In the mid-1800’s Lake Minnetonka enjoyed

Large steamships on the lake accommodated
thousands of passengers, and there were huge
waterfront hotels and constant scheduled rail
service that catered to the elite families from the
south that came here to avoid the heat. Relax and
view a variety of waterfront mansions, restaurants,
marinas and gardens on the lake.
Lunch on the boat will include a turkey croissant

PARK INFORMATION
Emerald Ash Borer in Dakota County
The emerald ash
borer (EAB) is
a small wood
boring insect
that has killed
tens of millions
of ash trees and
is devastating the ash tree population across
the eastern US. First discovered in Michigan in
2002, EAB was confirmed in St Paul in 2009.
Its first confirmation in Dakota County was
reported in Lebanon Hills Regional Park in
Eagan in December of 2014. A new infestation
in Apple Valley was confirmed by the Minnesota
Department of Agriculture in January of this
year.
Rosemount has been removing and replacing ash
trees from parks and boulevards for a few years
in anticipation of the eventual discovery of EAB
within the city. Removal and replacement is just
one of the many strategies available to manage
our urban forest and protect our tree cover.
Now that EAB is in our area, private property
owners should start to consider the ash trees on
their property and decide if they would like to
protect them or can accept the probable loss of
these trees.
Interested in a City garden plot?
Lottery deadline is March 31
Once again, the City of Rosemount is offering
its residents a limited number of garden plots
at several locations within the City. Plots are
available at the following sites:
• Biscayne Park (2420 145th Street West)
• Jaycee Park (15425 Shannon Parkway)
• Winds Park (15675 Chippendale Avenue)
• Lions Parks (15155 December Trail)
• Flint Hills Outdoor Recreation Complex (1201 Bonaire Path East).
The plots are available in two sizes: 10' x 20'
($30) and 20' x 20' ($50). Since demand for these
plots continues to exceed the number available, a
lottery will be held again this year to determine
who will be awarded plots.
A garden plot application form is available on the
city’s website at http://ci.rosemount.mn.us/
garden. The application must be returned to the
Parks and Recreation Department by March 31.
The lottery will be conducted and gardeners will
be notified of their plot assignment in early April.
If you have questions about the Garden Plot
Program, please contact Tom Schuster, Parks
Supervisor, at 651 322-6005 or by email at
[email protected].

RECYCLING
H Single Sort Recycling H
What to keep out of your recycling cart and why
S
ingle sort recycling (putting all the materials into one cart) has made recycling easier for most
homeowners, but it has also lead to some confusion about what really is recyclable and what is not.
There are eight recycling facilities in the Twin Cities area that sort recyclable materials like those
that we put in our single sort recycling cart. Single sort recycling works because the automated sorting
of materials at the recycling facility has become so efficient. But there are things that many of us put in
our recycling carts that cause some problems for the equipment that sorts the materials.
Plastic bags should be recycled at the grocery store or The Recycling Zone
Disposable plastic bags from grocery and retail stores are recyclable, but not in curbside carts. These
bags wrap around machinery at the recycling facility. The whole recycling process has to stop to cut
the bags out of the machines. This includes the bag you might use to collect your recycling – empty
recycling into your cart without the bag. Bring clean plastic bags to your local grocery store or The
Recycling Zone in Eagan to recycle.
Leave caps and lids on bottles and jars
We are now advised to leave the caps and lids on plastic bottles and jugs. Loose plastic caps and
lids are too small to efficiently go through the sorters and most fall through the machines and are
collected and disposed of as trash. If you have a lot of plastic bottle caps and milk jug lids, put them
in a plastic jug with a much bigger opening, like from laundry detergent or cat litter, and the caps will
stay with the rest of the plastic.
Why shredded paper is a problem
The paper we shred at home is also a problem. Unfortunately, no matter how we bag it up for
recycling, most of the bags rip open and the shredded paper ends up on the recycling facility floor
and, like the plastic caps, becomes trash. The recycling facilities suggest that we only shred what we
really need to shred and recycle the rest as full sheets of paper. If we must shred materials, do it at an
organized shredding event or drop off location where the paper is securely shredded by a commercial
shredder and sent to a paper mill to recycle. Also, composting is a secure way to dispose of shredded
paper, and the shredded paper makes a great addition to your backyard compost pile.
Hoses and chains wrap around sorting equipment
Another big problem for recycling facilities is garden hoses and chains so do not put them in your
curbside recycling. Like plastic film bags, these wrap around equipment and shut down the line.
While we might like to recycle everything, there is a limit to what can actually be recycled in
Rosemount’s recycling program. Instead, bring metal chains to The Recycling Zone in Eagan for
scrap metal recycling. If the hose is not in shape to be donated, then it should go in the trash.
If you would like to learn a little more about how Material Recovery Facilities work,
check out a helpful video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CFE5tD1CCI. For more
information on what can be recycled, visit www.dakotacounty.us and search recycling.

REDUCING WASTE
H Ways to Reduce Food Waste H
Did you know food accounts for nearly 18% of the garbage in the Twin Cities?
M
ost people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day –
from uneaten leftovers to spoiled produce. Americans waste 133 billion
pounds of food every year, equaling about $1,600 per year for a family
of four.
This massive food waste is a problem not just because the food could feed the hungry but also because
it ends up in our landfills and effects the environment. While we don’t buy food intending to throw it
away, that is what often happens. Food is the single largest component of U.S. municipal solid waste.
Food waste accounts for nearly 18 percent of all the garbage thrown away in the Twin Cities metro area.
Reduce wasted food with these simple shopping, food preparation and storage practices
• Identify what gets wasted. Pay attention to the food you throw away to understand what foods do not get eaten.
• Plan and save. Plan your weekly menu and make a grocery list to prevent buying more of what you already have at home.
• Be organized. Foods are less likely to spoil when the older items are used first. Keep your
pantry and refrigerator organized so you can see what should be eaten first.
• Prepare food when you bring it home. For instance, wash and chop peppers and onions right away so they are ready for meals when you are ready to use them later.
• Store food properly. Store food in clear containers to easily see and be reminded of the food inside them. Visit dakotacounty.us and search food waste to learn which items keep best in the refrigerator and which are better stored on the counter.
• Know storage times. Identify storage times for optimal quality and safety of different foods using “the Foodkeeper” mobile app. You can even set reminders for when foods are near the
end of their storage date.
• Try “use up all you have” recipes. Use online resources like Epicurious and Allrecipes for ideas.
• Learn a new skill. Take a community education class or follow online how-to videos to learn how to dehydrate, freeze, or can items that you buy in large quantities.
• Share with others. With today’s busy schedules it can be an effort to cook and bake so
don’t just toss away your hard work and tasty leftovers. Share your edible leftovers with
neighbors or a friend in need.
Find more information at www.dakotacounty.us and search reduce food.

Drop off unwanted items between 8 am.-noon at Dakota County Technical College
T
he City of Rosemount will be hosting its annual Spring Clean up day on Saturday, May 21, from
8 a.m. to 12 noon. Residents are welcome to drop off unwanted items that are not normally
accepted by their residential trash hauler. Once again this year, the event will take place in the
east parking lot at Dakota County Technical College, 1300 145th Street East (Co. Road 42). Participants
can enter the site off of Audrey Avenue just south of the college baseball field. We will be working with
Certified Recycling for collection and disposal of electronic equipment and appliances, and fluorescent
light bulbs. Anyone dropping off these items must pay Certified directly. Therefore, participants at the
event who wish to dispose of electronics and/or appliances along with other items for which we charge
should be prepared to pay Certified Recycling and the City of Rosemount separately.
The following is a sample of the items accepted at the Clean Up event and the associated fees. For a
more complete list of accepted items and the disposal fee for each, please see the City’s website at
www.ci.rosemount.mn.us. Please note: Only cash and checks are accepted.

ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION
10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7
PUBLIC WORKS FACILITY
(14425 Brazil Ave.)
Fall Fiesta Maple
J
oin us as we observe the 24th Annual Rosemount Arbor Day. We will recognize the importance of
Arbor Day with a brief program hosted by Mayor Droste. We will also be giving away trees from sixto-eight feet in height to residents of Rosemount. There will be a variety of tree species available. The
trees for this year are Maple Fall Fiesta, Oak Heritage, Coffeetree Espresso, and Crab Pink Spires (all are
subject to change). The first 180 residents of Rosemount who have proof of residency will receive a tree.
Due to limited quantity, there is a limit of one tree per household.
Due to the sensitive nature of bare root trees, they will need to be planted within 24 hours of the
giveaway.
Remember to call Gopher State One Call (651-454-0002) 72 hours in advance of digging. And be sure
to plan before you plant – watch for overhead power lines. More information on problems associated
with power-line obstruction can be obtained from Dakota Electric at 651-463-6212.
For more information on our Arbor Day Celebration,
call Lacelle at 651-322-6011.
This event is co-sponsored by Dakota Electric Association and Rosemount Parks & Recreation.
