Vicki Green, MSN, APRN, BC
Welcome Spring! Spring
is much-welcomed this year.
It’s been 10 years since South
Carolina has had periods of
such extreme winter weather.
An ice storm caused severe
power outages across the lower
part of the state. Our family
was without power for 5 days
- 5 days too many! Having no
power in the neighborhood
brought a time of extreme quiet
and stillness – a perfect time to
Vicki C. Green
reflect on what’s important in
life.
In the mid-1990’s, my vivacious mother-in-law was
diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She fought a hard fight,
receiving experimental chemotherapy from Johns Hopkins
University’s Cancer Clinic. As with most pancreatic cancer
patients, she knew her time was very short, living only 13
months after her diagnosis. She and her husband developed
a plan for her end of life. In the last couple of months, she
and her husband moved in with our family. Her husband
took a sabbatical from his teaching job at the University of
Maryland to help take care of her. Together, we enrolled
her into a local hospice program and participated in her
care until her eventual passing at home - in her own bed
she had brought with her from Maryland. She passed very
peacefully - just as she wanted – which made a very sad
time a little more bearable.
Unfortunately, not everyone has the courage or sense of
urgency to have discussions with their families to assure
their wishes are honored in their final days. Discussing
wishes for end-of-life care may be a difficult conversation,
but is imperative if we care about our families and want
control over end-of-life decisions. Without directives,
family members are put in unsettling positions, making
critical decisions for their dying loved ones without
knowing their loved ones’ wishes. In these very difficult
and emotional times, who wouldn’t want to give family
members peace by assuring decisions are predetermined
and carried out according to plans?
Nurses care for dying patients every day. Often, it is too
late for these patients to have this conversation with their
families and their loved ones struggle to make the right
decisions on their behalf. As patient advocates, we should
encourage these conversations to assure decisions are
made before end-of-life.
April 16, 2014 is National Healthcare Decisions Day.
Advance directives, including Living Wills and Powers
of Attorney, may seem very complicated, but the process
is outlined simply on the National Healthcare Decisions
Day’s website, http://www.nhdd.org/. This website explains
the simple processes, giving excellent resources to assist
along the way. The SC Hospital Association has a local
website for more information at www.scha.org/shareddecision-making.
I challenge you to have these difficult conversations
with your loved ones and your patients. Spread the word and these websites!

CEO Report
South Carolina Nurse—April, May, June 2014—page 3
PAPIN is Here
for YOU
Judith Curfman Thompson, IOM
SCNA CEO and Lobbyist
This past week gave me two really great opportunities to sit
for several hours in the company of nurses, nurse educators,
and nurse executives and even persons who are just interested
in nursing and healthcare as issues of real importance to
the future practice of nurses was being discussed. It was
stimulating to say the least.
One of the issues that was raised was, “what do employers
want?” The answer was one that, while not totally unexpected,
was one that caused some noise in the room. The answer was
that the new graduates were not prepared in the way that is
needed by current employers and certainly not for employers
of the future as healthcare continues to change. For many in
the room none of this was “new news.” The problem is that
Judith Curfman
the answers for the future will require large and compelling
Thompson
changes, from education, from licensing, from employers and
most of all from nurses who will be employed in very new systems of healthcare delivery.
The challenges inherent in the sharing of information that took place are not the
least bit small or easy. Some might even say they mimic the Labors of Hercules as such
profound change may be called for by all levels of the profession. Well, we do know that
Hercules accomplished what he set out to do. So, if he could do what was required of
him, I am certain that nurses can do what will be called for to enable the proud and noble
profession of nursing to continue the work it has done while making the changes that will
be necessary to continue in the future…whatever the future may hold.
I was reminded of a wonderful stanza from a poem by Robert Frost entitled, “The
Road Not Taken:”
“I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence;
To roads diverged in a wood, and II took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
Indeed now is truly the time to take the roads formerly not taken and thereby change
the path of history for the profession of nursing.

Palmetto Gold Gala - 2014
April 12, 2014
Presented by the
Palmetto Gold Steering Committee
It is time for the 13th annual Palmetto Gold Nurse
Recognition and Scholarship Program Gala. The gala
is set for April 12, 2014 at the Columbia Metropolitan
Convention Center.
The Palmetto Gold Nurse Recognition and Scholarship
Program is under the auspices of the South Carolina
Nurses Foundation, a 501-C 3 organization whose mission
is to promote high standards of health care by insuring
the advancement of the nursing profession through
scholarships, grants, and programs of excellence. The
purpose of the Palmetto Gold program is to annually
salute 100 registered nurses that exemplify excellence
in nursing practice and commitment to the profession. A
secondary purpose is to provide scholarships to registered
nurse students ensuring an adequate supply of nurses for
the future.
Palmetto Gold originated in 2001 when a coalition
of nurse leaders from major nursing organizations
came together to plan a strategy for showcasing the
many contributions that nurse’s make to the health care
profession. The organizations include South Carolina
Nurses Foundation, South Carolina Nurses Associations,
South Carolina Organization of Nurse Leaders, South
Carolina League for Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau
International.
The
Steering
Committee
received
excellent
nominations. The selection process is complete and 100
recipients of this prestigious award have been identified.
In addition to honoring the 2014 Palmetto Gold recipients,
the 2014 Palmetto Gold Scholarship recipients will be
featured and formally recognized.
Net proceeds generated from the gala evening are used
to provide nursing scholarships for students attending
South Carolina registered nurse education programs and to
build the Palmetto Gold Scholarship Fund. Palmetto Gold
advertising and sponsorship opportunities are available
for purchase for any business or individual interested. The
Steering Committee is grateful to the many employers and
benefactors that have contributed to the success of this
program for the past 12 years. The impact of the program
has been far-reaching as over $284,000 in scholarships
awarded to student nurses. If interested in supporting
advertising or sponsorship, please contact Susan Outen at
[email protected].
Please reserve April 12, 2014 on your calendar for
an exciting evening to celebrate nursing excellence. If
you have interest in ticket purchase, the registration
information will be available on the website www.
scpalmettogold.org.

the SCNA CNE process works.
The SCNA Board of Directors has created the SCNA
ADVOCACY FUND to assist in supporting the advocacy
work already done by the SCNA on behalf of the
profession of nursing. This fund will assist in covering the
costs of the advocacy work done by SCNA. These costs
have been increasing as opportunities for action have also
increased. These opportunities are in all areas of nursing
practice. The Fund was unveiled during the SCNA APRN
Chapter’s workshop recently held in Spartanburg, South
Carolina. The attendees were most generous in getting the
Fund off to a good beginning.
All members of the SCNA Board of Directors have also
been asked to contribute in addition to all the volunteer
time that they provide for advocacy on behalf of the
nursing profession. SCNA Chapter members will also be
challenged to participate in this exciting effort.
The Advocacy Fund will augment the SCNA
budgeted amounts that are needed for a variety of costs
related to advocacy. Contributions may be made by
anyone to SCNA. The Fund is not a tax-deductible item
for individuals due to the fact that it will be used for
advocacy and lobbying. Donations may be made using
the information found on the SCNA WEB site. Donations
may be made by check or by credit card and can be made
month by month.
Join your peers as they work to ensure that nursing will
be a forward moving profession!
SCNA is hoping that all members will be in touch with
the office by email: [email protected] to share with
us you HOME email address. We are most interested
in having this address instead of your “work” address
in order to be certain to protect you and the flow of
information to you. We are aware that many of our
members are employed in organizations that would prefer
that their employees do not use valuable work time for
personal business, so having your home address will be a
great idea for both you and SCNA. THANK YOU!
The SCNA Board of Directors reviews each aspect of
the organization every two years to be sure that we are
as up to date as possible with opportunities for SCNA
members to participate in the life of the organization.
Recently it was time to review the work of the
Legislative Committee. During the review, it was decided
to make the following adjustments to the legislative
activities of SCNA:
1. Each Chapter will be responsible for providing a
member to serve on the Legislative Committee
• Online or two Saturdays per month
• Finish in three semesters
• Students admitted in Fall and Spring semesters

Scholarship Thank You’s
South Carolina Nurse—April, May, June 2014—page 11
Protect your Nursing License
A Short List of Actions to Take!
Judith Curfman Thompson, IOM
CEO, SCNA
With thanks to Tracy L. Singh, RN, JD of the Nevada Nurses Association
for the inspiration for this article
1. Malpractice Insurance. No matter what an employer tells you about “covering”
you with “their” malpractice Insurance, please remember that the most important
word in that coverage is that it belongs to THEM, not to YOU! Having a personal
malpractice insurance policy is important. Look carefully at all products that are
offered and be very sure that the product that you purchase contains language that
includes coverage for complaints made against you with the Board of Nursing.
SCNA has endorsed the Mercer Consumer company (formerly Marsh) and they
may be reached at: www.proliability.com or http://www.personal-plans.com/
product/mercer/.
2. Keep the State Board of Nursing updated on your address. Be sure to let
every State Board of Nursing through which you have a license know if you
have recently moved. This is not just a “good thing to do” it is the law in most
jurisdictions. A complaint can be filed for any reason at any time against a nurse.
State Boards must investigate each complaint filed. As nurses, you will be notified
of any complaint filed. If the address is not current, you may not receive the copy
of the complaint. That is not the State Board’s problem, it is yours. Even though
you may not have received a copy of the complaint, it has been duly issued and
the State Board is then within its powers to take action on the license. Notifying
the State Nurses Association, SCNA, is NOT the same as notifying the Board of
Nursing in each state where you have a license. Action can take place against a
license by default, if the address is not current.
3. Is your listing in NURSYS.com correct? It is s good time to verify your listing
in the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, NCSBON, NURSYS.com
listings. While the NCSBON hosts the NURSYS.com web site, they DO NOT
guaranteed its accuracy. Review the information on the site. If there are mistakes,
notify the State Board of Nursing where you hold licenses. Only a State Board of
Nursing can correct an erroneous posting. A good time to do this is before you
receive your next license.
4. Renew your South Carolina nursing license on time. April 30, 2014 is the
deadline for this two year cycle. Practice without being licensed is against the law.
Forgetting to renew is not an excuse.
You worked hard for the license(s) that you have obtained. Guard and protect them in
every way that you can.

specialty.
SCFCNA Partners with DHEC on SC Obesity
Strategic Plan
The SCFCNA has been invited to participate in
developing statewide strategies for implementing the
specific Institute of Medicine (IOM) strategies to control
obesity in our state. The goals that have been defined for
faith communities include:
• Make physical activity an integral and routine
part of life
• Create healthy food and beverage environments
• Increase the initiation, duration and exclusivity
of breastfeeding
• Transform messages about physical activity and
nutrition
More information will be provided in future
publications and our website on specific ways faith
communities will participate in implementation of the
Strategic Plan.
SAVE THE DATE OF AUGUST 1, 2014
The SCFCNA Annual Conference will be held on
August 1, 2014 in Columbia. This year’s conference
promises to be another excellent opportunity to learn
about current programs impacting faith communities and
health ministries, to network with other nurses and health
ministers, and to collect ideas for program development.
This year’s conference theme is “Navigating the Chaos
in Healthcare: The Role of Faith Communities.” Watch
for registration information and further details in the next
SC Nurse as well as on our website at www.scfcna.com.
Other Upcoming Events
September 14-17, 2014 – Health Ministries
Association (HMA) 25th Anniversary Conference. This
year’s conference will be held in The Marriott Inn and
Conference Center, University of Maryland, University
College, Hyattsville, Maryland.
May We Ask for Your Help?
The SCFCNA is pursuing a lofty goal this year. It is the
desire of the organization to become a repository for Faith
Community Nursing Programs in South Carolina. We
receive inquires regarding where programs are established
and other than the ones that are members are affiliated
with, we have no knowledge of other programs. Since this
is a growing ministry and practice area, we would like to
invite anyone who has developed a program in their faith
community to share your information with us. The name
of the faith community and a contact person along with
contact information is needed. Please send information
to Renatta Loquist at [email protected]. We appreciate
your assistance in helping us develop this database.

security questions.
*Note: Section 40-33-38(C) of the South Carolina
Nurse Practice Act requires that all licensees notify the
Board in writing within 15 days of any address change.
Q: What are my options to document competency to
renew my license?
There are four options available in the Nurse Practice
Act to document continued competency for renewal;
however, not all options may be available for each
nurse or in every employment/ practice setting. Prior
to choosing a continued competency option, it is wise
to verify that documentation of the option is available
for you. Prior to renewing your nursing license in 2014,
one of these competency options must be completed
and documented between May 1, 2012, and April 30,
2014. The competency requirement for licensure can be
found in Section 40-33-40 of the Nurse Practice Act Chapter 33 under Laws/Policies as well as on the home
page of the Board’s website. Further explanation of the
competency options can be found in the Competency
Requirement Criteria also located on the Board of Nursing
website home page. This document includes lists of
accepted continuing education approvers/ providers,
certifying bodies and explanation of the completion of an
academic program of study.
1) Completion of 30 contact hours from a continuing
education provider recognized by the Board. In
2005, a decision was made to accept completion of
academic courses with a NUR (or NSG, Nursing, etc.)
prefix for this option as long as a minimum grade of C
is attained in an undergraduate course and a grade of
B is attained in a graduate course. (Note: one semester
hour =15 contact hours / 1 academic quarter hour =
12.5 contact hours); OR
2)Maintenance of certification or re-certification
by a national certifying body recognized by the
Board; OR
3)Completion of an academic program of study in
nursing or a related field recognized by the Board;
OR
4)Verification of competency and number of hours
practiced as evidenced by employer certification
on a form approved by the Board. Please verify
with your employer that he/she can/will sign this
form before choosing this option as your continued
competency demonstration. There are no set number
of hours you must practice nursing to use this option;
however, you must practice enough hours that your
employer can/ will sign the Employer Certification
form. If your employer is unable to sign this form, you
must choose one of the other options. This Employer
Certification form is available on the Board of Nursing
website homepage.
You are not required to send competency
documentation to the Board with your renewal. The
Board conducts random continued competency audits
throughout the year. Nurses chosen for audit will be sent
a letter requesting submission of continued competency
documentation within five business days of the request
pursuant to §40-33-40(D) of the Nurse Practice Act.
Q: I renewed my license, why have I not received my
license card?
As of November 2009, the Board no longer issues
license cards.
1) Licensees renewing their licenses and applicants
for new licenses will be notified by the Board by
e-mail or regular mail when the license has been
issued. In approximately 3 business days after receipt
of the licensure notification, Licensee Lookup at
https://verify.llronline.com/LicLookup/Nurse/Nurse.
aspx?div=17 will be updated.
This information can also be viewed and printed
by employers or the public. Licenses are renewed/
processed during normal business hours - 8:30 a.m. - 5
p.m. - Monday through Friday, except for designated state
holidays.

Q. How many hours do I have to work to renew my
license?
Section 40-33-40 of the Nurse Practice Act provides
four options for documenting continued competency
which include: (1) completion of 30 contact hours from
a Board-recognized continuing education provider; (2)
maintenance of certification/re-certification by a Boardrecognized national certifying body; (3) completion of a
Board-recognized academic program of study in nursing
or a related field; or (4) verification of competency and the
number of hours practiced, as evidenced by employer
certification on a Board-approved form. Nurses need
to be sure that their employer can, by their policies,
complete and sign the Board-required form required to
document practice hours prior to choosing this option or
renewing their license.
If you are going to choose option #4 above, there are
no set number of hours required, however, it must be
enough practice hours that your employer can/will verify
your competency.
Prior to renewing your nursing license in 2014, one of
the above four competency options must be completed
and documented between May 1, 2012 and April 30,
2014. The competency requirement for licensure can
be found in Section 40-33-40 of the Nurse Practice Act
under Laws/Policies or on the Competency Requirement
for Licensure. This document as well as the Competency
Requirement Criteria can be found on the Board of
Nursing website homepage.
Q: Is Company XYZ accepted for the continuing
education option?
The Board does not approve individual continuing
education courses. The Board accepts courses that are
approved by organizations listed in the Competency
Requirement Criteria (please refer to Section I of this
document). The competency requirement can be found in
§40-33-40 of the Nurse Practice Act under Laws/Policies
or on the Competency Requirement for Licensure. This
document as well as the Competency Requirement
Criteria can be on the Board of Nursing website.
Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CEU AND
CONTACT HOURS?
Continuing education hours, continuing education
units, and contact hours are all methods of measuring
education hours. Below is the breakdown from the
American Nurse Credentialing Center. Remember that
continuing education hours must be approved by or
provided by an organization on the Board’s Competency
Requirement Criteria (Section I) to be used for licensure/
renewal. Continuing education is just one of the four
options available to you to document competency.
1 contact hour = 60 minutes
1 CME = 60 minutes or 1.0 contact hours
1 contact hour = 0.1 CEU
1 CEU = 10 contact hours
Q: For my continuing education option for renewal,
can I count my XYZ Course taken at my hospital or
CPR, ACLS or PALS?
In-service education programs may be accepted
if they are approved by/ provided by one of the
organizations on the Competency Requirement Criteria
(Section I) and if certificates documenting requirements
are provided. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) courses may be
accepted if successfully completed and documented
during the licensure period (May 1, 2012 – April 30, 2014
and prior to renewing your license) and an attendance
certificate or certification card is issued listing contact
hours for the course. In order to count any continuing education course
for demonstration of continued nursing competency for
renewal, you must have documentation that includes: 1)
Name of licensee, 2) Title of educational activity, 3) Date
of activity, 4) Approving provider/ organization name
(must be listed on the Competency Requirement Criteria),
provider number and address, and 5) Number of contact
hours awarded for the course. To provide this required
information for courses such as ACLS or PALS, you may
need a copy of your certification card and a copy of the
course program/ agenda that provides information on the
approving provider/ organization and number of hours
awarded.
If you are unable to obtain documentation including
the requirements shown above, the course would not
be accepted as demonstration of continued nursing
competency for renewal. It is each individual nurse’s
responsibility to document their continuing education
or any other continued competency option chosen for
renewal of their nursing license prior to actually renewing
the license.
The following courses will not be accepted to meet
continuing education contact hour requirements:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support
(BLS), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses,
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) courses, Certified
Medical Assistant (CMA) courses, Operating Room
Technician courses, on-the-job training, orientation and
institution specific courses.
The competency requirement for licensure can be
found in Section 40-33-40 of the Nurse Practice Act
under Laws/Policies or on the Competency Requirement
for Licensure available on the Board of Nursing website.
Further explanation of the options can be found in the
Competency Requirement Criteria also located on the
Board of Nursing website.
Q: How can my employer verify that I have renewed
my nursing license?
If you need paper evidence of your nursing license and
expiration date, you may gain this information one of two
ways:
1) Click on Licensee Lookup on the Board of Nursing
website. Enter the bare minimum information (i.e.
your last/ first name or license number only [no letters
like RN, R, etc.]). You may print this page. If you type
information in all blocks and it is not entered 100%
the way it is in our system, you will receive an error
message (appearing as if the nurse doesn’t hold a
license in our state).
2) Licensees now have the capability through LLR’s
website to download and print a wallet card as a
courtesy after the license has been issued, reinstated
or renewed. The cards can be printed from your
printer. You will need Adobe Reader installed on
your PC to view and print the card. For best results,
use card stock instead of copy paper to print a more
durable card. To print a wallet card, go to https://
eservice.llr.sc.gov/SecurePortal/Login.aspx. Click on
“Print License Card” and follow the instructions.
Q: Where can I find the Board-Approved Employer
Certification form?
The Employer Certification form approved by the
Board for renewals can be found on the Board of Nursing
website at www.llr.state.sc.us/pol/nursing. It is also
available under Applications/Forms on this website.
Nurses need to be sure that their employer can, by their

policies, complete and sign the Board-required form
required to document practice hours prior to choosing
this option or renewing their license.
Q: Will my debit card work if I do not have a credit
card?
If your debit card has the Visa/MasterCard logo on
it, it will also work with our system. You may also use an
electronic check.
Q: I’m nervous about using my credit card online.
How secure is your site?
Our agency utilizes state-of-the-art security systems to
protect our nurses’ information.
Q: I need some information about “inactive status.”
If you are considering placing your South Carolina
nursing license in an inactive status before it expires on
April 30, 2104, please keep the following in mind.
• You must complete the Request for Inactive
Status form found on the Board’s website under
Applications/Forms and submit it along with a $15
check or money order before your license lapses
at midnight on Monday, April 30th. If you do not
renew, your license will be placed in a lapsed
status on May 1st.
• You cannot practice nursing in the State of South
Carolina on an inactive license. This includes
volunteer nursing.
• When you place your license on inactive status,
your Multi-state (Compact) status is also inactive.
• You can change your mind at any time and
reactivate your license, but you will need to meet
the continued competency requirements at that
time. The requirements to reactivate are based on
the amount of time your license is inactive.
• If you do not practice for five years or more, the
requirement for reactivating your license is retaking
the licensure examination or taking a refresher
course.
You may want to consider keeping your nursing license
active. Remember, to keep your license in an active status
in South Carolina, you only have to complete one of the
following continued competency requirements during the
licensure period:
1) completion of 30 contact hours from a continuing
education provider recognized by the Board; or
2) maintenance of certification or re-certification by a
national certifying body recognized by the Board;
or
3) completion of an academic program of study in
nursing or a related field recognized by the Board;
or
4) verification of competency and the number
of hours practiced as evidenced by employer
certification on a form approved by the Board.
More
information
on
continued
competency
requirements for renewal can be found in the Competency
Requirement for Licensure and Competency Requirement
Criteria, which are both located under Licensure on the
Board’s website – www.llr.state.sc.us/pol/nursing/
Q: What are my options to document competency to
renew my APRN license?
An APRN is required to hold a current specialty
certification
by
a
Board-approved
credentialing
organization for his/ her area of nursing practice to renew
his/ her APRN license.
You may check the status of your certification by going
to Licensee Lookup on the Board’s website. Certification
renewals/ updates should be provided to the Board in an
ongoing manner.
Q: What do I need to do to renew my APRN
prescriptive authority?
Renewal Requirements
1.For renewal of prescriptive authority, twenty
(20) contact hours of continuing education in
pharmacotherapeutics related to the NPs, CNMs,
or CNSs certification specialty must be obtained
every two (2) years and documented upon Board
request. For an NP, CNM, or CNS with controlled
substance prescriptive authority, two (2) of the
twenty (20) hours must be related to prescribing
controlled substances. Prior to renewing your
prescriptive authority in 2014, this continuing
education must be completed and documented
between May 1, 2012 and April 30, 2014.
2. The Board randomly audits renewal applications
and, if requested, documentation of education in
pharmacotherapeutics must be provided within
the time specified in the request. Failure to timely
comply will result in suspension of prescriptive
authority and possible disciplinary action.
Educational Requirements
1. Contact hours may be obtained through courses
taught in an approved program of study or through
approved continuing education offerings.
2.For renewal applications, a maximum of fifteen
percent (15%), or three (3) hours, may be obtained
through approved alternative, natural, herbal or
complementary pharmacotherapeutics education.
3. Renewal applicants selected for audit must provide
the following evidence of pharmacotherapeutics
education, as applicable:
a. Documentation of attendance either by official
transcript or copies of certificates of continuing
education attendance. Official transcripts must
be sent directly from the educational institution
to the Board of Nursing.
b.
Documentation
of
continuing
education
approval by an authorized or accredited
provider (i.e., national certifying organization,
college or university, state regulatory body,
national or state professional organization). It
is the responsibility of the NP, CNM, or CNS
to assure that the documentation includes the
number of hours received in any particular
session or course.
c.A description of course content which is
applicable to the APRN’s specialty area(s) of
practice.

BOUNCED CHECKS MEANS NON-PAYMENT OF FEES
When submitting any fees to the Board of Nursing,
be certain there are sufficient funds in your account to
cover your payment (paper or electronic check or credit
card) and that the payment has cleared before closing
the account. Section 40-1-50(G) of the South Carolina
Code of Laws states that a license shall be suspended if
a fee payment is made by a check that is subsequently
returned by the financial institution unpaid and is not
made good within 10 days of official notification. This
suspension is exempt from the Administrative Procedures
Act. Unpaid checks constitute a non-payment of license
fees. Section 40-33-38(C) of the South Carolina Code
of Laws (Nurse Practice Act) requires that all licensees
notify the Board in writing within 15 days of any address
change. When a check is returned, replacement funds,

Dean of Nursing
Trident Technical College, a two-year Associate Degree granting institution, is seeking a
visionary leader to serve as dean of nursing for its multiple-entry, multiple-exit nursing program,
which boasts a student enrollment of 650 in-house nursing students, 1000 pre-nursing
students, and 41 faculty and staff. The College is seeking to fill the position for the Fall 2014
semester. This position reports to the vice president for academic affairs and is responsible for
on-going development of the nursing division, its resources, and future direction. Duties include,
but are not limited to, ensuring high quality instruction in an engaging learning environment,
preparing and administering the budget, developing innovative curricula, implementing personnel
policies, and promoting an over-all positive environment for faculty and students. The nursing
division is housed in the new Nursing and Science Building that opened January 2014. All
classrooms, simulation laboratories and the Nursing Resource Center are state-of-the-art.
COULD YOU MAKE THIS MISTAKE—
AND BE SUED?
We all make mistakes. But as a nurse, one mistake
can lead to disaster. Consider this real-life example.
A 48-year-old woman with sleep apnea had surgery
at a hospital for a detached retina. The surgery went well,
and the patient was admitted overnight for observation.
That evening, the nurse gave the patient Demerol for pain as
prescribed. When the patient vomited shortly thereafter, the
nurse assumed the medication had been expelled and gave
the patient another dose. Later, the patient complained of
inadequate pain control. The nurse alerted the physician, who
ordered another pain medication. By 1:15 a.m., the patient
coded. The team could not resuscitate her.
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements: This full-time 12-month position requires a
master’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or university, a minimum of five years (5)
of progressive experience as a nurse educator in a nationally accredited RN nursing program; a
current SC RN licensure or the ability to obtain reciprocity.
The patient’s daughter filed a lawsuit. The case was
settled for more than $1 million, split evenly among
the nurse and two physicians.1
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:
• An understanding of and strong commitment to the mission of the
college.
• Student-centered and faculty-driven leadership.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Innovation in nursing education.
• Ability to convey a collaborative, solutions-oriented style to help lead
change.
• A track record in maintaining national accreditation and good NCLEX
pass rates.
• Strong budget management skills.
• An understanding of the role of information technology in educating the
next generation of nurses.
• An ability to advocate effectively for the nursing division and profession
within the college and at the local, state, national and global levels.
Application: Please visit www.jobs.sc.gov to complete the on-line application; attach cover
letter, curriculum vitae, five professional references including names, titles, institutions or
companies, and contact information. Copies of unofficial transcripts must also be submitted.
This position is open until filled with preference given to applicants who apply by Friday,
April 18, 2014. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Selected candidates
will be interviewed during the month of May. #1443 (UD09/0001/019378, opened 3/9/14).
