March on,
Irish people have always been very proud, these
days we seem to have less to be proud of. I say in
this our national month of celebrating Irishness
that we perk ourselves up by looking at the
positives. Yes we are in recession but that doesn’t
mean we can’t still enjoy what it is to be Irish.
We are a country known all over the world for

March
Can you believe it we are a third into 2012. Was it
not just New Year’s the other week? March is an
important month in
Ireland as it contains
that lovely day St.
Patrick’s Day. A day
where we get to watch
endless parades of
scouts and tractors.
We can break our
lenten promises and
tuck into a packet of
tayto or twenty.
We all turn

A bit of good news for Kilkenny is the re opening
of a newly refurbished Vero Moda. Vero Moda
is an international store that has been in the
Market Cross Shopping Centre Kilkenny for
many years. It’s a popular high street store
that is always up to date with on trend clothing.
We wish them continued success for many
more years. The new face of Vero Moda is the
stunning and stylish Alexa Chung.

THE AMBIENCE AFFAIR
BILLY BYRNE’S BAR,
JOHN STREET KILKENNY.
24TH MARCH 9:30PM
The Ambience Affair are renowned for
front man Jamie Clarke’s impassioned
vocal delivery and layered looped
guitars, kept in check by the pounding
rhythm section of drummer Marc
Gallagher. In 2010, bassist Yvonne
Ryan joined the set-up. They originally
formed when Jamie had been playing
and writing alone up until two years
ago, then he met Marc in the music shop
they both work in. Marc came to one of
his solo gigs and they then decided to
form the band.
Their song ‘Parting Patterns’ was
recently placed in an episode of CSI:NY.
“We’re just trying to make music that
is as good as the songs we listen to. If
you have listened to our tracks, bought
either of our EP’s, watched the videos
or come to any of our gigs, thank you.
Expect to hear plenty more from us.... “
THE Film
THE play
A group of men and women in their
twilight years move to the seemingly
glamorous Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
in Jaipur, only to discover that it is
actually a ramshackle ruin run by the
useless, yet deeply passionate Sonny
(played by Dev Patel, of Slumdog
Millionaire fame). Once established,
their lives begin to alter in surprising
ways as they adapt to the radically
different cultural lifestyle modern
Jaipur offers. The film is inhabited by
characters who all have something to
give, yet only when they move into a
new culture do they find a place where
they’re respected and offered the
chance to contribute. This is a moving
film that’s a brilliant showcase for a
superb cast. Take your granny to this
one but be warned, there may be a few
tears shed!
Gare St Lazare, Ireland’s most travelled
theatre company, make their fifth visit
to the Watergate Theatre with a unique
performance of Samuel Beckett’s short
story ‘The End’ performed by Irish
actor Conor Lovett, considered by many
to be the definitive Beckett performer.
The End is a gritty account of the last
days of an old man’s life as he struggles
to live despite his willingness to die.
Evicted from an institution of care he
stoically fends for himself in a state
somewhere between his dreams and
reality. Beckett masterfully balances the
tragedy with perfectly pitched comedy.
Lovett and director Judy Hegarty
Lovett have built a reputation for their
arresting presentations of Beckett’s
prose on stage and have toured all over
Ireland and to 65 cities around the
world. The End will be performed at the

Crouch, touch, engage...
The success of both club and international rugby in recent years has seen a surge in the popularity
of what’s rapidly becoming our nations greatest pride. At every level of the sport our little nation is
competing with increased professionalism and the rewards are there for all to see. Our expectations soared
during the recent world cup campaign but alas success eluded us on that occasion. However, we continue
to grow as a rugby power and we are still as spell bound whenever our club or countrymen take to the field.
Recently we caught up with Kilkenny native Ian Dowling who enjoyed success at both club and national
level and asked him about his experience on and off the Rugby field...
I’d go to The Nore Bar, lovely
pint of Guinness. Heading closer
to town, I would say, all roads
lead to Langtons. There’s a great
choice there now with Bridies,
and the Set.
Who do you think is going to win
the Heineken cup?
What was your most memorable
moment playing for Munster?
The Heineken cup home debut
against Sale in 2005/2006. It
was before Thomond park was
redeveloped and it was at full
capacity so there was a great
atmosphere.
Where did you go to school and
what sports did you play?
For Primary school, I went to
Gael scoil Osrai and for secondary
school I went to the CBS in Jame’s
street. I Loved all sports and there
wasn’t anything I wouldn’t at least
try, even tried hockey and tried
to put the rugby tactics to hockey
so that didn’t work out too well.
I played hurling and rugby, and
dealt a bit in soccer. It was always
Hurling in summer and rugby in
the winter Until I got to Under 21
and then the two seasons started
overlapping so I had to make a
choice.
How old were you when you
started playing rugby?
I started with the Under 8’s.
Where’s your favourite place to
go in Kilkenny?
As a tourist attraction, I’d have
to say Rothe House. When I come
home if I’m going for a quiet drink,
I would be hoping for Munster
to win but Leinster are the form
team at the moment especially
since getting Brad Thorn. My
big fear at the moment for
Munster is the rescheduling of
the Six Nations game. I hope
all the Munster players come
through. Suddenly they’ve
got four games in a row at
international level, it goes up
a notch and it would have been
better if they had that week off.
Which rugby player do you
admire the most?
Apart from the likes of Anthony
Foley, Paul O’Connell, it would
have to be Thierry Dusautoir who
was just incredible. He deserved
to win the world cup on his own.
Patience is probably the most
important. Sometimes the
forwards can be really greedy,
they don’t like sharing the ball
at times. You have to hold your
position. You need speed and you
need to be able to read a game,
and see how its going. When
you’re on the wing you get a
better read of whats going on.
The RBS continues throughout
the month of March. Ireland are
playing on the 4th, 10th, 17th of
March. The 10th Ireland play at
home at the Aviva Stadium.
Do you think Declan Kidney
is doing a good job managing
Ireland?
Deci brings his own spin on
management and his strength is
man management. He gave me
my first opportunity. Getting
my first start for Ireland was
all under Declan. Deci knows
his strengths and weaknesses
He always puts his own spin on
how he looks at things, after a
heavy loss, quick to get us out of
the doldrums. He’s excellent at
keeping you grounded. There’s
a great mix in the coaching with
Gert Smal there too.
What qualities in your opinion
makes a good winger?
Don’t forget the ladies! The Irish
ladies have also been playing their
own 6 nations, they play the 9th,
17th this month. The 9th is at
home in Ashbourne, Co. Meath.
Best of luck to both teams and
don’t forget to support your local
Kilkenny Rugby Club Men’s and
women’s teams who play most
Sundays from September to
March.
A stone’s throw away...
If by some miracle you run out
of things to do during your stay
in Kilkenny city, or you simply
want to see what else the county
has to offer, then read on..... Each
month we will pick a beautiful
destination roughly twenty
minutes outside Kilkenny city
for you to visit. This month
Jerpoint Abbey has been picked
from the hat and we think you
will be pleasantly surprised by
the magnificent charms of this
medieval complex.

Right, so how do you get there? Well if
you’ve got a sat nav device just simply
enter Jerpoint Abbey, Thomastown,
Co. Kilkenny as your destination and
hit start. However, if you prefer the
conventional method of a map and
some directions then simply take the
N10 for Waterford. Once you reach
Stoneyford turn left onto main street
and follow the signs for Jerpoint Abbey,

16
Ok, so you’ve reached your destination
and with camera in hand your
exploration of Jerpoint Abbey begins.
Access to the site costs €3 for an
adult, €1 for a child or student and €2
for OAP’s. A family ticket costs €8. A
guided tour normally takes about 45
min with a maximum tour capacity of
50 to 55 people. The site is open from
09:00 to 17:30 from early March to
December, further enquiries can be
made by calling (056) 7724623.
So what is it all about? Jerpoint
Abbey was built by the Cistercians
as a daughter house of the abbey of
Baltinglass, Co. Wicklow in the 1160s.
The abbey is a National Monument in
the ownership of the State. It is a well-
preserved example of the Cistercian
monastic plan, with fine remains of the
12th-century church, a 15th-century
crossing tower, and an important
cloister arcade with sculptures dating
from 1390-1400 and some remains
of the domestic buildings. There is a
fine collection of carved stone slabs
and tombs, including two knights
in chain-mail, dating to the 13th
century. During the 15th century, the
abbey was very wealthy, with local
possessions including land, cottages,
mills and fisheries. By the time of the
Dissolution, only the abbot and five
monks remained, all of whom received
pensions. The monastic possessions
were granted to the Butler family of
Kilkenny. As with most Cistercian
abbeys, the monks would have lived
off their own lands, with little formal
connection with neighbouring Newtown
Jerpoint except for some property
there. Hopefully that’s enough info to
whet your appetite
