VERMONT WOOD PRODUCTS
A Resource Manual
Connecting Architects and Designers with
Vermont Producers and Craftspeople
THE CORNERSTONE PROJECT
Project made possible through support from John Merck Fund, the Vermont
Sustainable Jobs Fund, and the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association.
The initial chapter of the catalog focuses on furniture. This section details a sampling of furniture makers that are
capable of manufacturing at institutional and commercial quality and volumes. This is not to say, however, that the
other manufacturers listed at the end of this section are not capable of quality furniture products. In many cases,
these furniture makers have produced small volumes of furniture for architectural projects and colleges. Two of the
listings, Vermont WoodNet and Guild of Vermont Furniture Makers, are in fact groupings whose smaller manufacturers can collectively meet the volume requirements of larger institutions.
Since many buyers are becoming interested in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green
Building Rating System®, we’ve identified companies that use FSC-certified wood in their products. While some
companies may not indicate that they use FSC wood currently, they may be willing to do so upon request.
We’ve also included a copy of a certified wood specification that architects and project managers can use. This
guide uses standard CSI formatting to facilitate customization.
Future versions of this catalog will encompass the range of wood products made in Vermont from rough lumber to
flooring, planed lumber to millwork/casework, beams to plywood. The furniture section, like this catalog, is a workin-progress. As more information on furniture makers is created, new detailed pages on additional manufacturers
will be available. If your company would like to be included in future versions, please contact the VWMA office at
802-287-4284. We’ve included a comment card so please take a moment and share your thoughts with us as we
assemble the next version.
FURNITURE
According to industry sources, imports now account for 34 percent of furniture purchases in this country, up from
23 percent in 1995. These losses can devastate small businesses and communities in rural Vermont. For example,
Ethan Allen Interiors, Inc closed two factories in 2001 in Essex and Orange Counties terminating 300 jobs. Like
many of its peers, Ethan Allen is moving production overseas.
The federal General Accounting Office estimates that every dollar spent on locally milled timber creates $3.50 of
value to local communities. One of Middlebury College’s recent building projects pumped $3.5 million back into
local economies through local certified wood purchases alone, benefiting over two-dozen small businesses in the
area. VSJF’s calculations indicate that every $97,000 spent on wood products in Vermont yields one full time manufacturing job in that industry. Clearly, the decisions purchasers make can influence the future of Vermont’s forests
and the state’s wood products sector.
VERMONT SUSTAINABLE JOBS FUND CORNERSTONE PROJECT
Beginning in 2001, VSJF worked in conjunction with the Office of Senator Leahy to assemble a network of large institutions with common interest in supporting the Vermont economy and obtaining sustainably harvested Vermont
wood products. From those early conversations emerged the Cornerstone Project, a far-reaching effort to connect
large institutional purchasers with local producers or craftspeople in Vermont. Buying from businesses in Vermont
keeps money circulating locally and grows small businesses’ bottom lines. The overall aim of the initiative is to
grow a sustainable economy and help Vermont businesses find their niche.
INTRODUCTION
The Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund (VSJF) and Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association (VWMA) partnered to
assemble this catalog of Vermont wood products. The publication provides wood products end-users with the
information they need to specify and purchase wood products grown and manufactured in Vermont.
INTRODUCTION
There is a business advantage to being small, green certified, and located in Vermont. Through the Cornerstone Project,
VSJF helps such businesses capitalize on these qualities. As a non-profit state-supported organization, VSJF is uniquely
situated to interact with businesses, associations, and governmental agencies. VSJF pioneered the development of Cornerstone as part of a broader effort to build a fully functional certified forest products system in the state. Through the
late 1990s VSJF and partners including the National Wildlife Federation helped persuade forestland owners to certify
their wood under the leading green standard developed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Progress over the
last four years yielded a fully connected system starting with certified Vermont forests feeding into mills and then on to
value-added manufacturers that provide high quality products for local and regional buyers.
The construction projects of the Cornerstone partners provide on-going opportunities for local businesses to gain new
in-state markets. With leaders such as Middlebury College, the University of Vermont, the Vermont Law School, the Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services and others demonstrating commitment to the local economy and
environmental well being, Vermont now has a sound foundation for expanding into other sectors. This foundation also
will allow businesses to seek markets outside Vermont for additional work.
VERMONT WOOD MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION
The mission of the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association is to support the wood products manufacturing industry in
Vermont and to promote its long-term viability by:
• Expanding the presence of members in the marketplace
• Ensuring a dependable supply of raw materials
• Increasing workforce skill and creativity
• Acting as responsible employers and community members
CREDITS
This catalog is made possible through the generous support of the John Merck Fund, the Vermont Sustainable Jobs
Fund, and the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association.
