Buena Park Police Personnel partnered with local schools to honor Red Ribbon Week.
We work together to encourage prevention and early intervention. Local schools
prepared special thank you cards for our personnel to show their appreciation (see
attached). During Red Ribbon Week, and throughout the year we should remember
the origin and significance of this meaningful tradition:
Red Ribbon Week is an annual celebration bringing together millions of people to raise
awareness of the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. This drug prevention
campaign honors the memory of Officer Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement
Agent, who had been working undercover in Mexico to investigate a major drug cartel
in 1985.
His investigation resulted in the discovery of a multimillion-dollar narcotics
manufacturing operation in Chihuahua, Mexico. In an act of revenge, leaders of the
drug trafficking crime ring captured, tortured and ultimately murdered Kiki. After
news of his murder reached his hometown, his family, friends and members of the
community donned Red Ribbons in his honor.
In October 1988, an official annual campaign began, continuing the tradition of
displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs. Today the
Red Ribbon continues to be a symbol for prevention efforts and remembrance of the
dangers of drugs. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and
visible commitment toward the creation of a DRUG-FREE AMERICA.
26 years since Red Ribbon Week was established in 1988, Buena Park Police
Department’s goal remains the same: to raise awareness about the risk of drugs,
alcohol and tobacco, and to promote the benefits of a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
