Chairman’s Corner – Bob Swanson, Chairman of the Board
The first few months of the year are a busy time for the Board and Committees. They have been at work completing their game plans for 2006, to better serve our membership and enhance your experience at our Club.
The Social Food & Beverage Committee, under the leadership of Robert Cooksey, are working on ways to
improve your experience in the beautiful Member Lounge. The Fitness Committee chaired by Shiek Shah,
continues to evaluate and upgrade our fitness facility including both cardio and audiovisual equipment.
The Tennis Committee, under the guidance of Marsha Tokerud, has lined up an exciting tournament schedule as well as new
social events for the tennis enthusiast. Golf Services, under the command of Mike Gunn and the Golf Service Committee, have
published the 2006 tournament schedule and continue to work on improving your golf experience. Golf Greens Committee,
headed by Rick Mills, continues to refine the “We Care” program while working closely with the greens staff to ensure quality
course conditions. The Handicap Committee, led by chairman Bob Sander, maintains their focus to protect the integrity of our
handicap system.
As of this writing, your Board is finalizing its goals for the year. We will continue to focus on bringing our members a premiere
private club experience. Thank you for your support!

Club Scene
Top Ten
– Rob Cowan, Club Manager
We’re on to something big...I am so excited
at this moment to see the transformation
that our Club is going through. It reminds
me of the phrase used in the automotive
industry, “Best in Class.” If there was a
similar ranking in the club industry, I’m confident that we would be
“Best in Class” for private clubs.
I feel the pride of our members growing. Just in the comments
and overwhelming success of the new Byron’s Member Lounge,
I know we are headed in the right direction. The casual elegance
of the new lounge coupled with the high energy of our staff has
contributed to a 30 percent increase in its use. Just wait until the
new patio with outdoor dining opens – I can only imagine the
jostling for tables on those sunny days in May!
One long-time member said to me, “I was blown away by the new
lounge. It was so much more than I ever expected it would be.”
That is exactly what we plan to keep delivering to the membership – more than you expect. I promise you will see the same
attention to design and function that you see in the new lounge in
everything that is yet to come.
The new Eleven banquet room will be “dressy” – you’ll feel
special just sitting in it and taking in the view of TPC No. 1.
The new Pro Shop will take golf fashion and personal shopping
assistance to a new level. The addition of the clock tower is
certain to become an icon at the Club. It literally towers over the
roofline as a constant reminder of the importance of our leisure
time. And, the Byron Nelson Hall of Honor will be a fitting
tribute to our friend and fellow Club member.
Best in Class? You can count on it!

Golf & Landscape Operation
– Scott Miller, CGCS, Director of Golf
and Landscape Operations
This Spring, to ensure the healthiest possible turfgrass, there are many
cultural practices we will be taking to promote good growth. Aeration
is one of the most important. This year, we will do a lot more aeration,
as we will do the greens, as well as the fairways, tees, collars and
roughs. On the greens, we will aerate with the deep drill machines at ten inches deep, followed
by the one-inch center core aeration at a standard depth of four inches. This double aeration
serves two purposes as the deep drill aerates ten inches down breaking any layering and compaction, while the standard one-inch center core aeration aerates four inches deep to remove the
soil profile. We are actually removing 19 percent of the green’s root zone mix during this
process. We then apply sand topdressing and brush the sand into the holes. This allows us to
help modify the root zone profile by adding new sand to the root zone mix, thus relieving any
compaction and promoting the new root growth from the bentgrass.
We will aerate the tees in March, and this year are also adding collars, fairways and even the
roughs to the mix. We will aerate the tees all at once, aerate the collars with the greens, and aerate
several fairways each week throughout March and early April. You will see many holes with plugs
of soil in the fairways, a mower mulching the plugs, as well as a blower or vacuum cleaning up
the debris. The big push to aerate more this year is because our soils have become very compacted and difficult to grow quality grass. So we will aerate to loosen the soil and allow roots to grow
deeper and thicker, thus cultivating a healthier and higher quality grass.
In May, we will prepare for the

The Greens Committee has been
busy with their commitment to making the golf courses better, the Hole Monitoring program, the
We Care program and increasing communication to the membership through the Greens
Committee website, http://greenshmp.dtcreate.com all support this effort. Your support is truly
appreciated. See you on the courses.

An Earnest Opinion
Upcoming Golf Events
– Paul Earnest, Director of Golf
MGA Cottonwood Cup
Traditionally, the Spring newsletter contains messages of renewal
– goal setting, committee vision, action plans, and simply plants
coming to life after the winter season. For the golf staff, Spring
is an exciting time. Being part of an organization that continually
improves its products and services is an energizing place to work. While today we are
still wearing hard hats in our golf Pro Shop, our vision is starting to take shape. The
golf locker room improvements, the reinvigoration of the fitness center, the completion
of the lake on TPC 18, and most recently, Byron's Member Lounge each provides a
glimpse of the ongoing commitment that our Club is a special place. In the months
ahead, I will describe to you our formal three-year golf course improvements plan
which will begin this August – it is a plan that is certain to give renewal to both of our
golf courses and give our members great pride.

Devising A Winning Game Plan
Julie and Cory Albracht
– John Mullman, Director of Tennis Instruction
When playing a match, how should you go about devising a winning game plan? Firstly, you should always play to your strengths.
Your game plan should be to put yourself in a position to hit from
the base line or get to the net if that is what you do best. Secondly,
you need to find your opponents number one glaring weakness. He
or she might not hit their backhand as well, or they might not be
very productive hitting volleys at the net. This way of approaching your match play will
increase your odds of being successful on the court. Remember, do what you do best on
the court and keep beating up on the weakest element of your opponent’s game. Good Luck

Exercise Tip – Andrew Reyes, Personal trainer
Looking for a way to shake up your cardiovascular routine?
Try starting on a treadmill set to a grade of 1.0 and a moderate to brisk walking speed. With
each passing minute, add one degree while keeping the speed constant. Continue repeating
this each minute until you reach a grade of 15. After reaching this summit, decrease the
grade by one each minute until you reach the original starting point. Shake up your exercise
routine to avoid boredom, promote cardiovascular endurance and muscle growth.
