Dear Parents and Guardians
We have just been informed that there has
been an issue with the printing of the Naplan
reports that are sent to parents. They will not be
available until the beginning of Term 4. Be
assured that as soon as they arrive in the school
they will be posted home.
Literacy and Numeracy
Mt Macedon
In August, all of our Year 7 students participated
in an excursion to Mt Macedon. This excursion
supported their work in Integrated Studies. An
enjoyable day was had by all. Congratulations
to the Year 7 Integrated studies staff for their
organisation of this day.
Beacon Bonanza
All Year 10 students participated in our annual
Beacon Bonanza Day. Students were able to
speak to people from a range of occupations
as part of the ‘Speed Careering’ session.
Another session focussed on ‘Work Readiness’,
and there was also a motivational speaker.
Congratulations to the Beacon Ambassadors,
Louise Bryant and the Middle Sub School for their
work organising this day.
The College has been recently recognised for
the excellent results we have achieved in the
area of Literacy and Numeracy growth over the
past few years. An article outlining the study we
are involved in was published in the Herald Sun.
The excellent results we have achieved in these
areas are due to the hard work and dedication
of the teaching staff.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Tuesday the 3rd of September saw the Term 3
Parent Teacher interviews. Thank you to all the
parents and guardians who were able to
attend. The partnership between teachers and
parents is a powerful one in supporting students
to achieve their full potential. If you were unable
to attend for any reason and would like some
feedback on how your child is progressing,
please make contact with your child’s Year Level
Coordinator.

Science Mural Opening
On Friday 30th August we hosted the official
opening of the Science Mural in the Science
Centre. There was a wonderful turnout of staff,
parents, students and community members
who enjoyed a light afternoon tea as they
listened to speeches from the artist, Robert
Jackson, student leaders Victoria Obieglo and
Johnny Radas, and staff members Marion
Mortimer and Nick D’Aglas. The mural is a great
addition to the College, and is a reminder to all
students of the historical link between art and
science.

Fik-Shun - Year 8 Band
Hello, we are the Year 8 band Fik-Shun. Our band
contains 4 members – Dominic Lay (Drums), Anne Rivera
(Vocals), Christine Tran (Bass) and Hao Lu (Keys).
“Even though we were put together last year, it feels like
we have been together for longer” – Anne.
“Performing is great, well after we perform because we
are always nervous before performing. The good thing is
afterwards we want to do it again”. – Dominic
“It’s a great experience. Mostly because it’s a new
experience”. – Hao
“Being in a band is really beneficial, not only is it fun, but
we get to record our song covers and perform in assemblies”. – Christine
“Overall, our band has learnt a couple of songs but we hope to increase the numbers in the days to come”

Robotics Year 10
Robotics class is about building and programing robots using LEGO
Mindstorm. We test the robots program with trial and error to logically solve
a problem. In this class we also learn to build and design our own robots in
which we make the program ourselves.
We learnt to use the lego NXT programing environment to program and
read values off sensors from the robot. While Programing the robot we also
learn how the program works in a logical order.
The best thing about robotics class is that I can relive my childhood playing
with lego but be able to do extraordinary things with a simple to
understand programing languages.
Hi my name is Tuan Lai and I am doing Robotics in year 10. Robotics is a
very interesting and fun subject as we program and build robots and make
them do interesting things with the program. This subject involves team
effort and organisation skills as things all have to be in place to make it
easier to find pieces. This subject teaches us how to build and program our
own robot. The best part of this subject in my opinion is the fact that we get
to build and program our own robot to however we wish.
My name is Kevin and I do year 10 Robotics. This subject is all about team
effort, organisation and sometimes individual skill. We get to learn how to
make our own robot by putting little parts together and working in a group
to build it. The best part about this subject is you actually work together to
build our own robot, finding all the little parts and connecting it to the right
places, this is a very enjoyable class.

Sports Report
Year 7 Boys Basketball
The boys trained for 7 weeks every morning before school during
the coldest months of the year. Their developing fitness, skills and
abilities were only matched by their dedication and commitment.
On Tuesday August 27 we played against our local schools. In the
first game we trounced KDC. The first 10 minutes was very close
but our accuracy and good play ensured we had a great lead by
the 20 minute mark. We gave a valuable run to our other players
and although KDC came back, we weren’t seriously challenged. In
our second game against Copperfield KP we lead from the start
and never looked back.
In the final against Taylors Lake although they were a tougher
opponent we continued the great aspects of our play and didn’t
give them a look in. Buku was the player of the day and his second
and third efforts were amazing. Isaac F, Isaac C, Phong, Aron and
Samson – their consistent support wore our opponents down.
Joseph’s steals wrong footed our opponents on their attacks and
broke their confidence. Talhah, Simon and Jimmy put in worthy
efforts with little game time. David didn’t get a run but ably
supported the team using the scoreboard. We dedicated our win
to teammate John who unfortunately was injured the day before.
Squad: Isaac Charles (captain), Phong Le (vice captain), Buku Khamis, Isaac Fuimono, Aron Gebregiogis, Samson Hollands, Joseph
Henries, Talhah Sanim, Simon Tran, Jimmy Nguyen, John Li & David Tran. Coach: John Eckel.
Science Centre Mural Launch - by Marion Mortimer
The wonders of science feature in the mural created by Albion artist Robert Jackson, and the 20 metre long artwork holds pride of place
in the new St Albans Secondary College Science Centre building. Robert Jackson spent around six months working on the science mural
at the Keilor Art Shed, as part of the Brimbank Council’s Art Spaces Project.
The science mural was officially launched by Mr Peter Lewinsky, Brimbank City Council Administrator on Friday 30 th August 2013.
Year 12 VCAL students, Dylan Decouto, David Pavlidis and Steven Wolf did an outstanding job catering for this event and made VCAL
Co-ordinator, Ms Marlene Cassar proud.
Acknowledgements
Robert Jackson – the mural is a celebration of artistic and scientific achievements, providing knowledge and inspiring imagination in our
Junior School students.
The Funding Body – we give thanks for philanthropic people.
Nicholas D’Aglas – whom St Albans Secondary College is indebted to for his entrepreneurial flair.
Marion Mortimer, for enthusiasm and encouragement.
Lynne Borle, Science Co-ordinator for her on-going support and organisation of the science mural launch.
The entire science department for their input.
Brad Klooger and Jim Borle for the fastening system.
Brian Davies from Cavalier Art Supplies for the materials.
Brimbank City Council Arts and Culture Dept. In particular Toni Burton. They provided the Keilor Art Shed where the mural was painted.
Robert Jackson concluded his Science mural launch speech with a quote from quantum physicist,
Erwin Schrodinger:
"I am very astonished that the scientific picture of the real world around me is very deficient. It gives a lot of factual information, puts all
our experience in a magnificently consistent order, but it is ghastly silent about all and sundry that is really near to our heart, that really
matters to us. It cannot tell us a word about red and blue, bitter and sweet, physical pain and physical delight; it knows nothing of
beautiful and ugly, good or bad, God and eternity”.

Beacon Bonanza
On Friday 23rd August, Year 10 students participated in a range of exciting activities as part of the annual Beacon Bonanza Day,
including ‘Speed Careering’ and 'Ready to Work'. This program was led by Beacon Ambasadors Joshua Aghan, Anna Hijazeen, Hoa
Nguyen and Brigitte Thomas.
Students met people from a diverse range of professional backgrounds and were able to discuss career and educational pathways.
Students also participated in workshops led by Year 12 VCAL students Bonsa Dawe and Mohamed Ismael. This provided students with
valuable job seeking skills. Travis Demsey, drummer from the award winning Australian rock band The Living End, presented an
exciting and entertaining motivational speech and music workshop.
On behalf of the Beacon team I would like to thank students and staff for their enthusiastic participation in the Beacon Bonanza.

Lady Northcote Recreation YMCA Camp
The latest Year 9 ADVANCE adventure was held at the Lady
Northcote Recreation Camp at Bacchus Marsh. The intrepid
students along with Ms Mortimer and Mr Micallef were
challenged to “get out of their comfort zone” by exciting
activities run by the YMCA Outdoor Education Instructors. We had
a great time and the class was impressive – supporting,
encouraging and caring for their friends.
Here’s some camp reviews:
Renae M and I teamed up together for the orienteering course
and after running around like crazy people we won. We then had
the flying fox, which to be honest at first was a little intimidating,
but as I watched my class mates enjoying themselves – I
decided I had nothing to worry about. Other fun activities were
the giant swing, high ropes, damper making and archery. I really
enjoyed this camp as the activities really challenged everyone
and we all had to work together to succeed. ... But the thing that
I loved most, was getting to bond more with all of the people in
our class. Renae WILKE 9A
I enjoyed the mountain bike riding and giant swing because it gave me an adrenaline rush. Viet TRAN 9C
For the Survivor Challenge we learnt how to make damper (bread) – it required patience, which gave us time to have a “chat” together.
I also enjoyed the Initiatives Course as we had to work as a team to achieve the tasks. Konelio VITAE 9D
The high ropes course was really scaring for me, as I was terrified of heights. Climbing to the course was really hard but I eventually went
up there – and succeeded. It was a terrifying experience yet full of adrenaline. I had overcome my fears. Cindy HUYNH 9E
I was really excited that we were going to do archery – as I love archery but I can’t really aim properly. For the first two rounds I was
terrible, but after that I improved and stuck the balloon twice. Kerri TRAN 9E
Over this whole camp experience I saw myself doing things I thought I would never do. For example, the high ropes course. I was
actually pretty eager, but it was so scary reaching the top, the fact that I actually completed it without falling was such a great
accomplishment for me. It helped me get out of my comfort zone a little bit and I am so happy for that. ... The camp made me closer
to people I thought I would never be close to - the girls and boys truly made this camp experience truly amazing.

LOTE Japanese Speech Contest 2013
On Sunday the 25th of August Song Tinh Le of Year 10 and Isabelle Bouttaveth of Year 7
competed in the Japanese Language Teachers Association of Victoria’s annual Japanese
speech contest. Students were required to recite a set Japanese speech from memory using
their best Japanese pronunciation and intonation. They were then
asked to perform another short speech of their own without notes. Our
students were among the top secondary school Japanese students
of Victoria and we are extremely proud of their fine performances in
this very nerve-racking and gruelling event. We would also like to
recognise Jaedyn Azzopardi of Year 8 and Kevin Ma of Year 7 for
successfully competing in our school finals as well. Well done!

The 8th Annual Year 7 Mathematical Challenge Day at Taylors Lakes
"On Thursday 29th August, 4 teams of Year 7 students were nominated to participate in the Year 7 Maths Challenge day which was
held at Taylors Lakes Secondary College. There were 4 schools in attendance; St Albans, Taylors Lake, Copperfield Sydenham and
Kings Park.
The St Albans team consists of:
A: Brendan Nguyen, Kathy Tran, Christine Nghiem and Vinh Nguyen.
B: Ted Lee, Phillip Le, Long Huo and John Nguyen.
C: William Hoang, Gaven Lay, Julie Vo and Tina Huynh.
D: Tina Wen, Anna Nguyen, Julie Lu and Katherine Min.
It was a fun and challenging day; students completed lots of strategic
questions and were put under pressure together to work in a team
environment to solve different mathematical problems. All the students who
participated on the day had a real go and gave it their best efforts to
collect points for their teams. At the end, St Albans Secondary College
came second overall. Also the 2013 year 7 mathematical team broke the
record for having the highest amount of points since the competition
started back in 2005. Well done guys you did the school proud, we should
all give them a pat on the back".

7A Philosophy Excursion
“Our class went on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum, hoping to learn more about
the body and the mind. We met our distant education teachers for the first time on the
day. We wandered around the museum and learned new facts about the minds of
people and how it works.
The best part of the day was when we had a debate about whether Earth should be
destroyed or be spared from the aliens called Vogons. It was a very interesting
discussion, listening to others argue their point of view, since it required very much
thought. We also met new people from other schools, as they were doing the course as
well. It was a great, fun and a very rewarding day, as we came out with more
knowledge and questions about ourselves and the universe. “
By Andy Du and Joe Hew
“I really liked the debate on whether Earth should be destroyed or saved from the aliens
called Vogons. I thought that the discussion was interesting and entertaining because everyone had to voice their view and
explain why. I also liked the game ‘True or False’ at the beginning of the session because it helped open up my mind and ‘break
the ice.’
During our excursion, we were expected to do some philosophy work so we were divided into teams to work in. We had to answer
questions about the mind and the body, and we also learned about different types of questions; imaginative, philosophical,
research and quiz.”
By Ling
“In our philosophy courses, we learn about different ways of thinking and arguing with reason.
The excursion to the Melbourne Museum was quite interesting and enjoyable. We talked about the differences between the mind
and the brain and many questions were posed throughout the day.”

Middle School Report
It has been a busy term for Year 9 and 10 students, with many excursions and activities run to support student learning.
Year 9 students have enjoyed writing workshops in their English lessons run by published authors, Music and Science performances, and
LOTE excursions to the city. Students studying Advance have been on camp in order to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
A number of Middle School students represented the school at the Athletics Carnival on Friday 30th August, and we congratulate them for
their successful performances.
Year 10 students all took part in the Beacon Bonanza Day organized by Ms Bryant and the Beacon Ambassador students. The day was a
great success and I’d like to thank the Beacon team for their hard work in the lead up to the event. There have also been a number of
excursions for students studying Law, Business Management, Drive and Survive and LOTE subjects. On Tuesday 10 th September, Year 10
students will enjoy a performance of Romeo and Juliet presented by a visiting drama company.
A reminder to parents that the school policy on mobile phones states that if students wish to bring them to school, they must be turned off
and left in lockers all day. Students who are seen using a mobile phone during the school day will have phones confiscated and parents
will be asked to collect them from the general office at the end of the school day. We thank you in advance for your support.
I would like to thank Ms Sandy Fraser for her work in the sub school this term, and for the time, effort and kindness she has shown to all the
students she has worked with. On behalf of the Middle School team, I would like to wish all students and their families a restful break over
the holidays. We look forward to seeing you all back in Term 4.

Senior School Report
We are now at the conclusion of what has been a very busy and eventful Term 3! Term 3 has seen a variety of events including:

Students Forums for Years 11 and 12

A variety of guest speakers at assemblies and other events

Reports from our scholarship winners – both Year 11 and Alumni students

2014 scholarships information for the Year 12s

Several students leadership programs for Year 11s

Mid -Year Reports for Year 12

Parent Teacher Interviews

A variety of Enrichment Programs for Year 12 students.
At the start of Term 3, the Senior School ran student forums for our Year 11 and 12 students to seek student feedback on a variety of
aspects of school life, and to consider additional ways in which we can support the students to enhance their overall experience at the
school. The feedback from these forums has been collated and we have had some very positive comments as well as information to
plan further activities for the students.
Year 12 Reports were mailed out to parents in Week 4 this Term, so that parents, students and teachers could take stock of how students
were progressing. These reports were then followed up with our Parent Teacher Interviews during Week 8, which were well attended and
very productive.
Our last Assemblies for Term 3 Senior School featured guest presenters addressing the students regarding scholarship programs. Ms
Jenny Devereaux from the Education Department spoke to the Year 12 cohort on Scholarships that they can apply for, at a variety of
institutions including universities and TAFE colleges. Our alumni Dafyyd Lewis scholarship holders, Wayne Thai & Giang Nguyen, spoke to
both the Year 11 and 12 cohorts about how they obtained their scholarships and their subsequent experiences as undergraduate
students at the University of Melbourne. It was wonderful to have these young people come back to the school and show others what it
is possible to achieve with hard work and dedication.
Other scholarship winners spoke at assemblies about their experiences. Demi Tran made a presentation to the Year 11s about her
recent Arts Scholarship to Trinity College, University of Melbourne. Loy Singebhuyhe spoke about her experience in Sydney at the
prestigious UBS Finance Academy Scholarship. Both girls were so impressive in the way they talked about meeting other participants some of whom came from different countries – and what these opportunities had given them. Our SRC students also spoke to both Year
11 and 12 assemblies about the upcoming “Are you OK” Day, raising awareness of mental health issues and the support structures that
are available to help.
On Wednesday 21st August we had the launch of the ABCN “Aspirations” Program for Year 11 students. This Mentor program is the
second ABCN program Senior School had run this year. The Program which is supported by staff at Goldman Sachs, aims to develop
direction, resilience and leadership in our students. Sixteen students will participate in this program over 4 weeks, and members of our
team will accompany them into the city offices of Goldman Sachs for their mentoring sessions. Mentoring programs of this nature aim
to build on the principles of Positive Psychology. “Positive Psychology” is the work of world leading psychologist and expert adviser on
wellbeing at the highest level of international public policy, Professor Martin Seligman. Seligman believes that happiness is not the result
of good genes or luck. It comes from focusing on personal strengths rather than weaknesses and working with them to improve all
aspects of your life. We look forward to hearing the feedback from this group about their experiences over the coming weeks.
Ms Sonja Carras addressed both our Year 11 and 12 cohorts when she gave her “Whole New World” presentation in August. Sonja
presents an amazing one-woman show, using a combination of humour, shocking factual case studies and factual information about
current laws, to completely engross her audience for a double period. Sonja’s presentation on staying safe while partying was thoughtprovoking and highly entertaining as usual, and her information was very relevant for young people starting to develop a social life. The
students applauded Sonja when she told them she had just given birth to a baby twelve days earlier, but had to come in to speak to
them because she loved the work she does and she really cares about giving them the information to help them stay safe.
Enrichment programs have been running for Year 12 students in English, Specialist Mathematics, Health and Human Development,
Business and Accounting. The September Exam Timetable for St Albans SC is now available from the School Office. The September
Exam Timetable has been constructed so that our students can also attend the Victoria University Free VCE Revision Lectures, which are
given by outstanding presenter and are extremely valuable. The full end-of-year VCAA exam timetable for Year 12 exams can be
viewed on the VCAA website through the following link: www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/exams/timetable.aspx.
The VCAA VCE Exam Navigator has been distributed to Year 12 students (and Year 11 students doing a Unit 3&4 sequence). This is a very
important document for students, as it outlines the rules under which the VCE exams are to be conducted. It also states clearly what
students may or may not take with them into their examinations. A pdf copy of the exam navigator from the VCAA website at the
following address: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/vcaanavigator_web.pdf
Many thanks to the parents who contact us when their child is absent for any reason. This is of great assistance to the Year Level

Parents & Friends Association
Thank you to all the parents, students and staff who returned the Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers. We have had our tally of 2160
stickers confirmed and our Librarian, Ms Jo Harris has completed our order of some lovely books for our library. We now anxiously
await there delivery.
We will be conducting our annual Christmas raffle shortly and tickets will again be available for purchase through class captains, the
canteen and the general office. We again have been fortunate enough to have some great prizes on offer. Your support of this
raffle will enable the school to make some refurbishments to our school camp at Strathbogie. More details shortly.
