New documentary horizons
Yves Jeanneau, director of Sunny Side Markets,
outlines the prospects for tomorrow’s documentaries.
We are seeing a clear return of TV broadcasters from North
America and the arrival of new SVOD platforms, at least for
what we have called Specialist Factual (History, Science,
Wildlife, and Archaeology), all those programmes which fuel
the prime time and Specials slots on linear TV. These
broadcasters – whatever type they are - come to Europe to look
for subjects, producers and opportunities. It is a relatively new
phenomenon on this scale. Or at least it had been absent for
7½ years, on account of the new fashion for all-entertainment
which made real documentaries a bit persona non grata! But viewers have grown tired of these
of glitzy formats, and the fashion seems to have petered out. “Docs are back”, we clearly heard
at the Washington Real Screen Summit this year.
This comeback will be illustrated in Sunny Side with the attendance of senior editorial execs
from National Geographic, PBS, Curiosity Stream, Smithsonian Channel, etc.
Add to that the return of Canada, and you have an international coproduction market which is
genuinely globalised, including Asia, Brazil, Australia and of course Europe, and already some
African partners. Spanish-speaking Latin America is unfortunately still lagging behind this global
movement.
This successful globalisation of the international documentary coproduction market is good
news!
As for the circulation of these documentaries, new practices are emerging. For traditional linear
TV broadcast, and possibly a theatrical release, these are the films I am talking – events-based
programmes – which will fill the schedules and the screens.
On the other hand, it should be noted that programmes which deal with justice are also very
buoyant … but very often firstly on internet platforms or in cinemas. Investigation films still
work well when they properly produced; but there are so many poor imitations!
We are beginning to see the particularities that platforms are encouraging, searching out and
coproducing: investigation, more thriller-type subjects, more youth-targeted, opening up other
possible fields to coproduction.
By extension, we have seen strong production and coproduction in Art & Culture (as well as
music), combining archive films and live-action shoots.
This type of film, particularly for music, have virtually disappeared from television channels, but
are reappearing on on-line platforms and in the cinema, and are winning awards in festivals
such as Sundance.
Another trend deserves our attention: in France, Science and History productions receive more
subsidies (75 films benefited from the increased automatic aid form the COSIP/CNC in recent
months). These are demanding productions, with big budgets, considered as stock programmes
with a longer life-span … and with multi-screen broadcasting methods.
New broadcasting media – and new uses – generate experimental and innovative productions,
This is one way of bringing new life to the documentary approach
Sunny Side will provide an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of developments
new methods of financing and exhibition. There is a real demand for new writing, using new
technologies creatively (including VR). This new writing must bring responses to new needs and
create new uses.
Real Games: Seriouser and Seriouser
Some people may think that it is only a cosmetic change, but we are slowly moving towards
what are now called Real Games in place of Serious Games. I think that this terminology gives
another meaning closer to our aspirations.
This means that by combining gaming and documentaries, we are moving towards the
Educational, in the noblest sense of the term. We will seek out the interest of audiences in
Knowledge, understanding, learning to bring them high-added value content, in line with their
entertaining and fulfilling consumption practices!
We can see that this is not done with boring educational software any more, but with quizzes,
games, a world of learning which is able to reach its audience, make it loyal and give it greater
value.
If documentaries manage to succeed in this blending, it will have (at last) an opportunity to
open up the universal market of Knowledge and Learning. This is, at the end of the day, one of
the fundamentals of documentaries!
The reason we make documentaries is for them to be seen, and above all to change our
perception of reality, preconceived ideas and fantasies. For them to educate the eye, the ear and
understanding. Discernment, as we used to say. I.e. the contrary of ignorance and stupidity! It is
clear that there is a political responsibility which is increasingly coming under threat, and not just
by the Caliphates.
In coming years, Sunny Side will have to defend and illustrate this conception of the
documentary. Its forms change and blend, its tools are no longer the same, its screens are
multiplying… but it is, and will remain, at the heart of the democratic challenge and cultural
progress. Or it will have to take the path of resistance.
Sunny Side, 27th Edition: the International Documentary Ecosystem
“Two years ago we reached a sort of plateau with 2000 participants. I think that this gives us
an idea of what this event really is: the meeting of 2000 professionals from around the world
making up the documentary ecosystem on an international scale”.
This success comes from the fact that for the past two years we have organised Sunny Side of
the Doc around themed days: Wildlife, History, Science, Natural History, and more broadly
Global Issues.
These themed days mean that, at the same time and in the same place, we can focus the on
the documentary world in all senses of the term.
For a producer of documentaries specialising in History, the day begins at the Morning Docs
breakfast and runs through to the Happy Hour in the evening, or even the premiere
screenings in the Grand Ecran selection. They can meet new decision-makers, broadcasters,
or new platforms in the One to One meetings. They will obviously go to the Panel to get a
better grasp of the challenges of the moment and to be able to anticipate them better, and
they will have discovered through R&D Exclusives a solution enabling them, perhaps, to
benefit from technological innovations for their next production. The Pitch will also be an
opportunity to meet and discuss with all the decision-makers.
Lunch is an important time, when, with the 100 or so professionals selected, an issue can be
explored in new ways; it will be an opportunity to listen to an internationally renowned
speaker who will shed light on this issue by bringing their expertise.
The fact that these themed days have been put together increases – almost paradoxically –
the time spent in the Market. Over 4 days, the 2000 international professionals present can
find:
* People looking to buy a finished programme
* People looking to finance a project
* People looking to discuss problems which can hold up a project and any possible solutions.
Such as, for example, the question of archives when a film is going to be re-exhibited
following 3 or 5 years of initial rights.
When I mentioned the idea of an ecosystem, it is not just a word. We have managed to bring
together at Sunny Side creators, producers, broadcasters, financiers, regulators.
And finally, there is no other time in the year, on such an international scale, that these
“players” can come together to meet each other, discuss and gain better understanding.
Our added value can also be measured through the examples that we focus on, to cast a new
light on them, to bring solutions and to help the documentary genre to progress.
By having Canada as our country of honour in 2016, we obviously want to have a better
understanding of the Canadian law which states that 20% of funding must be earmarked for
digital forms of exploitation and support for programmes.
It is important to understand the consequences of the implementation of this law and what
lessons we can learn from it. It is a question which is particularly relevant in France, and also
throughout Europe. This questioning approach is what Sunny Side is all about.
The fact that the Documentary College of the EBU, as well as those for Science and Education,
French-language members of the Les Médias Francophones Publics Association (formerly the
CTF), are coming to Sunny Side of the Doc for their AGMs is an important sign.
It is the sign that Sunny Side of the Doc is the “capital” of international
documentary.
Canada, country of honour
“Canada will soon be celebrating its 150th anniversary, and we are a bit ahead of the game, bringing
to La Rochelle, the range of Canadian professionals involved in documentaries and innovations
relating to new media”, said Yves Jeanneau, CEO of Sunny Side markets. “Producers and
distributers, broadcasters and Regional Agencies, Federal Organisers and Support Funds… they will
all be there!”

Documentary and advertising have converged. Nothing new, Nanook of the North was funded
by a French fur company in 1922. But now it is a matter of survival for corporations to tell real
stories. Pushy advertising and heavy-handed product placement has proven ineffective. So
marketers have re-embraced documentary using the power of stories instead of ads.

Sunny Side of the Doc
More than 60 television channels present in 2016
The “capital” of international documentaries, Sunny Side of the Doc welcomes, alongside its
programme, European and international broadcasters and representative organisations
providing them with a special place for discussions and synergies.
For the first time the Documentary Group and the Science and Knowledge Group of Eurovision
will both be meeting at Sunny Side of the Doc. Around 60 commissioning editors from European
public broadcasters will be present to defend the best documentary projects with an
international potential in all fields and on all themes. Furthermore, French-language
broadcasters who are members of the Association Les Médias Francophones Publics, formerly
the CTF, will be meeting for their AGM on Thursday 23 June at 14.30 (Meeting Room).
“Sunny Side of the Doc is definitely a special place for convergence of all European public service
broadcasters, who will be able to unite their forces and attract new non-European partners to
projects they have chosen”, explained Yves Jeanneau.

Sunny Side of the Doc: Grand Ecran
From 20 to 23 June 2016, as part of Sunny Side of
the Doc, Grand Ecran will be offering the public a
selection of films screened free of charge in the
partner cinemas in La Rochelle.
For this 27th edition, Canada is the country of
honour, with a very rich programming with
emotion, discoveries and questions on the major
challenges facing our society. “God Save Justin
Trudeau” gives an incisive portrait of the political
path of the current Canadian Prime Minister,
“Living with Giants” is a subtle blend of
investigation and sociology.
A definite change of scene with “The Wanted 18”,
an animated documentary on the antics of a herd
of cows declared Public Enemy No 1 in Israel, and
“Last of the Elephant Men” which takes us to
Cambodia to meet three generations of Bunongs,
bearing witness to the moving relationship
between Man and Elephants. A beautiful adventure shadowed by a modern-day parable.
Grand Ecran, is also an opportunity for première screenings from broadcasters:
-
France Télévisions: “Life Before Birth” by Romain Icard (Nilaya Productions)
Canal +: “Exodus” by James Bluemel (BBC, Keo Films)
Arte: « Inside Obama’s White House » by Norma Percy and Delphine Jaudeau (Les Films
d’ici 2 and Brook Lapping, BBC, SBS-TV Australia, NHK, SVT, VPRO, RTS, DR, RDI/Radio
Canada, YLE, TVP)
An occasion to see two favourites: “The Man Who Mends Women”, the exemplary story of
Doctor Mukwege, a Congolese gynaecologist dealing with the ravages of conflict, and “Les
pépites” on the extraordinary destiny of a European couple who chose to help children living
in the landfill in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

A highly original ID at the very heart of new digital media trends
Ina, France’s national audiovisual and digital company, collects, protects, and shares
French television, radio and web heritage. Ina’s innovative approach is geared to catering
to the new ways we are using this wealth of digital possibilities. This involves enhancing
content, and sharing that content with as wide an audience as possible: on ina.fr for the
public, and on inamediapro.com for professionals in the sector.
With over 2,300 documentaries and programmes produced in 40 years, Ina has acquired a
unique expertise. At Ina, we structure stories, and process archives visually, putting the
content into perspective and the topic in question into a context with a view to renewing
audiovisual writing and programme formats.
Ina innovates in all areas of image, exploring new territories in both expression and
diffusion, and the new areas opened up by the digital world. At Ina, we invest in all the
latest cutting-edge production tools to make them available to the authors and film
directors we have chosen to partner.
Ina, the media laboratory for media content, their uses and the audiovisual sector in
the digital age.
Ina applies its open innovation approach to its research activities and, indeed, to all its
areas of business. Open innovation lies at the heart of our DNA and we use it in four areas:
archiving, preservation, indexing and documentation, as well as operating and publishing
content, data visualisation and search.
The original projects conducted by Ina’s Research teams working with both private and
public partners, have given rise to our reassertion of our ambition, which is well within our
grasp. We intend to step up the partnership ties, extending them to business clusters and
start-ups.
This year, Ina is introducing two innovative solutions at the Sunny Lab: OTMedia, an
observation platform, which analyses media flows, and DIGINPIX, a visual identity library
and search system that recognises objects within images.

LA ROCHELLE : territoire d’image
et technologies numériques
La Rochelle Township Committee is pleased to welcome the
27th international documentary market Sunny Side of the Doc on
20-23, June 2016. This year edition is particularly exciting and
meaningful for us since Canada will be country of honour.
The business channel dedicated to image, information and
communication technologies (ICT) now gathers 140 companies
and represents, within La Rochelle township, 750 jobs and a
turnover of 115 million €. For the last decade, the number of
companies and employees working in this industry has doubled,
giving way to a new generation of businessmen with a wide
panel of activities: web agencies, software and mobile app
designers, audiovisual producers, etc.
With La Rochelle University, these businessmen can recruit
locally skilled people, for instance at the Mathematics, Image
and Applications Laboratory. They also benefit from a dynamic
environment with many local events such as Sunny Side of the
Doc and the international film festival. Moreover, one of the
many advantages of the territory for the image industry is the
location of the TSF film studios in the town centre of La Rochelle,
few steps away from the railway station. Unique on the Atlantic
Coast, the TSF studios offer a wide working space of 4,000 m2,
including two sets of 900 m2 and 550 m2.
Besides, La Rochelle and Québec City, both on the 46th parallel
north, are closely united by their history. Their relationship is still
strong and was recently reinforced with the opening of the
historical heritage tour Les Chemins du Québec, a tour going
through centuries of history reflected in different houses,
monuments and museums of La Rochelle. For the Common
congress of the associations France-Québec and Québec-France
in May 2015, a blog called La Rochelle–Québec, 46e parallèle
nord was created. Dealing with historical facts and news, this
blog aims at creating a “virtual house of Québec” here in La
Rochelle. And we are thrilled today to remind the historical
relationship between La Rochelle and Québec City, a centurieslong relationship that still lives on.
