April Fool’s Day, Easter, Arbor Day, Masters Golf Tournament, Earth Day, Boston
Marathon, AND Tax Day...all well known events occurring during the month of April
that do not give federal workers an official day off. Well, since your editor did not get an
invitation, once again, to the White House Easter Egg Roll, we’ll just skip right by that
annual traditional event. One event which does have a common denominator with this
specific tabloid and its readership is National Dance Week which occurs April 23rd
through May 2nd. We may be passionate when it comes to our own personal style of
dance, hand dancing, but let’s not overlook other dance venues that embrace the world
of dance. Below are some photos extracted from the National Dance Week website.
Trip through Time! Thanks to Pat Joh and Joanie Rurka for sending the identical
excerpt below. Regretfully, the author of this timeless piece is unknown. Open up a
bottle of pop and enjoy your trip down memory lane.
“Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot,
before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot,
there lived a race of innocents, and they were YOU and ME.
For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born; where
navels were for oranges; and Peyton Place was porn.
We learned to gut a muffler; we washed our hair at dawn.
We spread our crinolines to dry in circles on the lawn.
We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince,
and Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since.
We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to 'Stagger Lee'
and cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Only girls wore earrings then, and three was one too many,
and only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.
And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see
a boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice,
and when they made a movie, they never made it twice.
We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three,
Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp,
and Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp.
We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T,
and Oprah couldn't talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We had our share of heroes, we
never thought they'd go,
At least not Bobby Darin, or
Marilyn Monroe.
For youth was still eternal, and life
was yet to be,
And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead,
and Airplanes weren't named Jefferson, and Zeppelins were not Led.
And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees,
Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars,
and babies might be bottle-fed, but they were not grown in jars.
And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free,
and dorms were never co-ed in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag,
and microchips were what were left at the bottom of the bag.
And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea,
and rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Buicks came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks,
and bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks.
And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee,
and Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, Me.
We had no Crest with Fluoride; we had no Hill Street Blues; we had no patterned pantyhose or
Lipton herbal tea or prime-time ads for those dysfunctions in the Land That Made Me, Me.
There were no golden arches; no Perrier to chill; and fish were not called Wanda and cats were
not called Bill.
And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three,
and ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, Me.
But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say,
and now instead of Maybelline we swear by Retina-A.
They send us invitations to join AARP.
We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me, Me.
So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans,
and wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines.
And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be,
Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me, Me.”
And for those of us who remember Bob Hope’s legendary theme song:
“Thanks for the memories.”
In Friendship and Love ~ Your editor received a
beautiful and moving expression of thanks, friendship, and
love from Lou and Kathy Linn. The following sentiments
were intended for our extended hand dance family and
“wonderful crew at Perry’s” who demonstrated their
friendship and love for Lou and Kathy through their
generous expressions/donations during the recent loss of
their son.
“It’s very hard to find words to express our deepest love,
gratitude and generosity received from each and every one of
you. We hope that our grandchildren will one day understand
how important it is to have wonderful friends as all of you.
Each of you will always, and forever, hold a special place in
our hearts, and your sincere kindness and expressions of sympathy will never be
forgotten. Love, Lou and Kathy.”
When it comes to loss, pain, sorrow, or disappointment, the abbreviated lyrics to Bill
Withers’ song titled LEAN ON ME hit a cord with this editor.
LEAN ON ME (Bill Withers)
“Sometimes in our lives, we all have pain, we all have sorrow.
But if we are wise, we know that there's always tomorrow.
Lean on me, when you're not strong and I'll be your friend.
I'll help you carry on, for it won't be long 'til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on.
Please swallow your pride, if you have things you need to borrow.
For no one can fill those needs that you won't let show.
You just call on me brother when you need a hand.
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand.
We all need somebody to lean on.
If there is a load you have to bear that you can't carry.
I'm right up the road; I'll share your load if you just call me.
Call me (if you need a friend)”
When Spending Money Rewards YOU with Money ~ Congrats to
Perry’s regulars, Bill Jarvie and Donna
Goodman…first recipients of a $50 Perry’s
gift card. The next drawing will take place at
Perry’s on Thursday evening, April 1st. If
you still have 3 dining/beverage receipts
from Perry’s during the month of March,
it’s not too late to hand them to Mickie
that evening. Thanks, once again, to Perry’s
General Manager, Kristos Miliotis, for giving back to our hand dancers in such a
generous fashion.
Sunny Days and Moonlit Nights ~~ And that’s just
the beginning of what Peter Agustin and Lin Bartle
can look forward to. No, they’re not going on some
romantic getaway weekend….YET. Peter and Lin shared
the news of their recent engagement (NOV 09) during a
recent visit to Perry’s. Congratulations to a very special
couple who continue to dance and stay in step with each
other in more ways than one!
Celebrity Birthdays ~ Have a burning desire to know
what celebrity shares your birthday? Well, for our Perry’s
regulars who will be celebrating THEIR special day in April,
you’re going to find out even if that burning desire was
extinguished OR didn’t exist to begin with!

John Barbata (Musical Artist), and Jimmy Cliff (Musical Artist)
Annemarie Thompson (APR 10) ~ Joseph Pulitzer (Journalist), Harry Morgan

Why not stop by Perry’s on Thursday evening, April 15th, to dine, socialize,
extend birthday well wishes, and have a piece of cake. For those last minute
tax procrastinators beating feet to a Post Office to mail their taxes, don’t
dawdle too long or your slice of cake might just be gone!
Still Sitting Here Smiling and Waiting ~ Nope, not
for my phone to ring…that’s working fine. What isn’t working is
hearing from our readership with some occasional tidbits, trivia,
inspirational/humorous stories, or special occasions, to feature
within an issue. A LOT of the time spent by your editor
researching the internet for content could be decreased
significantly with occasional input from our readership. Don’t
have a computer and are reading a hard copy of this issue?
Drop by Perry’s and see me in person…personal contact is
always my first choice. Own a computer? Please drop me a
line and, ALWAYS, please add the words “Mickie’s Mail Box” in the subject line of
your email. Email address: [email protected]

WACKY PHOTOS!
Ya think Karen’s been sneaking a few
drinks in between serving her
customers?
Seems like all of Stan’s practicing
paid off…he’s mastered the
technique of turning two ladies at
one time (Phyllis and Diane) without
bopping one of them in the head!
General Manager Kristos helps bartender, Jme, from getting
her new boots messed up. Never had a boss like this when I
was working!

AFTER
Diane and Phyllis spruce up for a Kodak moment. After works for me!

Jack, Jeane, and Sticks all smile pretty for the camera while Ned must be
day dreaming of the waitresses at Hooter’s again! Guess Jeane will be
having another talk with Ned!
