Rose Cousins
A Nickelodeon Debut!
(Nova Scotia)
Rose Cousins’ CD We Have Made A Spark won the 2012 Juno Award for Roots & Traditional
Album of the Year. She has also won two Canadian Folk Music Awards for Best Contemporary
Singer. She’s the winner of six East Coast Music Awards, three Nova Scotia Music Awards and
three PEI Music Awards. Rooted in authenticity and conviction of voice and the devastating
emotions her music evokes, you feel as though Rose Cousins sings for you, about your life. It is
that sincerity that leads some to compare Cousins to our most beloved songwriters and yet her
passionate delivery is distinctly Rose. From writing songs in a tiny cabin without electricity on a
New Hampshire island, to the stage on one of her many international tours; her lone voice reaches
out to listeners, all of us surrounded by our own forms of darkness and charges us to have the
courage to forge ahead.
Steve Pineo
“Some voices hit you hard from first blush and this is
one of them.” Exclaim!

Sultans of String celebrate the release of Symphony! a CD that brings the glorious sound of a full orchestra
to their feisty world-jazz compositions. The Sultans are Chris McKhool-violin, Kevin Laliberte-guitar,
Eddie Paton-second guitar, Drew Birston-bass and Alberto Suarez-percussion. The Sultans of String
were nominated for a 2010 Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year and 2012 Canadian
Folk Music Awards for Instrumental Group of the Year, World Group of the Year and Pushing The
Boundaries. In 2008 and 2009, they were first place winners in the instrumental category in the
International Songwriting Competition. Known for dizzying roots music jams, poly-rhythms and revved
up riffs, Sultans of String can’t be pinned down. Sable Island meets the Silk Road, with detours through
the Gypsy-Jazz coffeehouses of Eastern Europe, an East Coast Kitchen Party, then over to the majestic
Arctic and vibrant streets of Havana.

her ability to engage an audience. Emily Triggs’ honest, authentic vocals win
fans everywhere she sings her alt-county music. Corry Ulan brings quirky and

A legendary singer, songwriter and guitar player, Roy Forbes has over forty years of touring behind
him. From the early days of small coffeehouses and opening act slots with artists like John Lee
Hooker, Supertramp, The Earl Scruggs Review and Santana to eventually selling out his own
shows and headlining most of the major folk music festivals in Canada, Roy has developed into
one of Canada’s best loved acoustic performers. Roy has made a bunch of solo albums plus two
with UHF, the “once-in-a-while” group he shares with Shari Ulrich and Bill Henderson. His first
album Kid Full of Dreams earned a 1976 Juno nomination and 1998’s Crazy Old Moon got another
Juno nomination and won a West Coast Music Award - one of several he’s won over the years. A
compelling live performer, Roy’s extraordinary songs have been recorded and performed by many
different artists.
Chloe Albert
“It has never been anything less than a major pleasure to listen to
new songs by Forbes, a craft-conscious writer who remains one of the
truest troubadours in the Canadian mosaic.” The Toronto Star
(Alberta)
Steve’s songs have been recorded by Paul Brandt and Prairie Oyster. He’s
performed with well-known local bands Beautiful Joe, The Co-Dependents and
the Joe-Defendants. With Beautiful Joe, Steve appeared on the final episode
of The Rita McNeil Show. He performed on a western Canadian tour with
Jann Arden and The Huron Carol with Tom Jackson. The Co-Dependents
Live Recording Event was #1 at Megatunes for two years. Steve’s solo CD A
Perfectly Good Friendship won a 2001 Prairie Music Award for Outstanding Roots
Recording. Steve Pineo’s Blue Monday Trio Volume One-Hardwired for the Blues was
released in 2011.
Magnolia Buckskin
“Energetic and exciting music from a band with
talent to burn…the very epitome of world music: no
boundaries, no rules…the sort of band and music that
would rip up any festival in the country!” Maverick

Canadian Folk Music Award Nominees! (from all across Canada) November 9
1st Ever Nickleoden Event!
The mission of the Canadian Folk Music Awards is to celebrate and promote Canadian folk music in
all its forms. Until their creation in 2005, no awards existed to celebrate the breadth and depth of folk
music in Canada. Awards such as the Junos, East Coast Music Awards or the Western Canada Music
Awards have a few categories that apply to folk and roots music but they offer only a restricted view of
the genre. The judging process is similar to that of the two-stage elimination model used by the Junos
via a randomly selected jury drawn from our community.
The Nick is a sponsor for the Best Contemporary Album CFMA. The CFMA Awards Gala and
Concert and catered reception will take place at the University Theatre on Sunday, November 10
and will be hosted by CBC’s Shelagh Rogers and Benoit Bourque of La Bottine Souriante. Gala
performers will be announced at a later date. Tickets for this event are now on sale at http://www.
ucalgary.ca/tickets.
The Nick will present showcases by six 2013 CFMA nominees from various award categories, the
night before the Gala award presentations. The nominees for 2013 Canadian Folk Music Awards will
be released on September 26 and those performers chosen to showcase at the Nick will be announced
after that. Nominees showcasing at the Nick will be posted on our website along with photos,
biographies and video links. Our evening format will feature three sets of music as usual, with two
nominees sharing the stage in each set.

Annabelle Chvostek
A Nickelodeon Debut!
(Ontario)
In 2004 Annabelle was selected to replace Cara Luft in the Juno-winning Wailin’ Jennys.
Chvostek’s songs were repeatedly singled out by critics as highlights of the Jennys’ CD
Firecracker, nominated for a Juno for Best Roots and Traditional Album. Devil’s Paintbrush Road
was the 2006 #1 Canadian song on U.S. folk radio. She released her solo Resilience in 2008. It
was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Album of the Year and
became the second most played Canadian album on U.S. folk radio at the beginning of 2009.
In 2010 she released Live From Folk Alley and two co-written duets with Bruce Cockburn were
released on his Juno winning Small Source of Comfort. On her latest release, Juno nominated Rise,
she has managed to take a decades old art form, the protest song, and completely re-imagine it
for a new era of activism.
Cayley Thomas
“Despite its’ weighty words, listening to Rise is an effortless
pleasure. This record is a beauty.” Andy Frank - Roots

January 11
Carrie Elkin has emerged as one of the defining new voices in the world of Texas singer-songwriters.
Danny Schmidt is a preeminent writer, whose earthly poetry manages to conjure magic from the
mundane. It’s a special treat when Danny Schmidt and Carrie Elkin, who normally tour separately and
solo, get to share the stage together. If the chemistry seems especially sparkful, they come by it honestly,
as they are a rare breed; a romantic partnership in real life, not just musical life. Danny Schmidt is
best known for his riveting poetic lyrics, broadly recognized as an artist of generational significance.
Gypsy spirit Carrie Elkin is best known for her incredibly soulful and dynamic vocals. The voice, the
stories, the images, the grace - it’s the complete package. Together, they create a performance of great
energy and spirit, that audiences connect with on a multitude of levels, emotionally, spiritually and
intellectually.
Lucas Chaisson
“Danny Schmidt’s the real thing, a bona fide: Best new
songwriter in X years kinda guy.” Penguin Eggs Magazine
A Nickelodeon Debut!
This summer, in a session at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Cayley sang a heartfelt
tribute to her late brother to earn a mid-set standing ovation. This 22 year old sounds like
the muddy Mississippi came west on the North Saskatchewan whitewater. Raised on the
riverbanks of Edmonton, Cayley is at home singing the blues of long winter nights, the jazz
of orange prairie mornings and the folk of everyday life. Her truest love is sharing her songs
and her heart with listening audiences. Her honesty, humour and vulnerability will take
you on an inspirational journey you won’t soon forget.

Lucas’ original songs are described as folk, roots, blues and country. He joins his
eclectic tastes and musical mannerisms together with his soulful voice and a lyrical
knack far beyond his 19 years. Lucas’ debut full length recording, No Loitering,
received a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Young Performer of the Year.
His newest CD, Growing Pains won that award in 2012. The term “old soul” is over
used but it’s literally the case with this clever young tunesmith. His skillful, percussive
guitar style, mature, well crafted and insightful lyrics and honest vocals keep audiences
engaged and wanting more.

J.P. is the winner of twelve East Coast Music Awards, a Canadian Folk

of guitar”.

Blues, Old Time, Country, Soul and Cajun.
Remembering Bob Brozman
(March 8, 1954 - April 23, 2013)
We are saddened to have lost an exceptional Nickelodeon performer. Bob
Brozman played blues, ragtime, gypsy jazz and Hawaiian music. Either
finger-style, slide, or strumming on his National resonator guitars, Bob was
a virtuoso, and an amazing wizard of rhythm and time. Through his many
recordings Bob Brozman will continue to inspire. Thank you old friend,
you are missed.
