From Superintendent Dr. David Larson
Our focus is on college, career readiness
We had a very successful 2014-15 school
year with numerous accolades for students
and staff. However, we continually seek
new opportunities for students to grow,
learn and achieve new levels of success.
With an emphasis on college and career
readiness, we are focused on challenging
students to stretch themselves. Here are
just a few examples:
We have doubled the number of students who take
AP exams over the last five years, and we are focused
on continuing to increase AP enrollment among all of
our students. Our partnership with Equal Opportunity
Schools is a significant opportunity to reach students
who have not enrolled in AP classes and show them
that they can be successful in these challenging courses.
Glenbard West social studies teacher Jim
Fornaciari earned the College Board’s AP
Teacher of the Year Award for the
Midwestern Region.
Congratulations to Glenbard North’s
wrestling team on finishing in 3rd
place at the IHSA dual team state
tournament.
Our caring staff members are committed to each
student’s success.
James Wareham and Ronald Greco; and
National Junior High Girl’s Honor Choir,
Sarah Dible.
Glenbard West student Angeles VazquezHernandez took 3rd place in nail
care at the Illinois SkillsUSA State
Competition.
All four of our high schools once again
were named to the Washington Post’s
list of America’s Most Challenging
High Schools. Fewer than 10% of high
schools nationally make the list.
Congratulations to Golden Apple
Scholars of Illinois students: Glenbard
East student Samuel Fragoso and Glenbard
North students Angelica Hernandez and
Kyle Lieberum.
We provide a learning environment that inspires learning and encourages engagement with the school.

Congratulations to Glenbard West student
John Starkey on being named a National
Achievement Finalist.
We are among only nine school districts in Illinois accepted to the national Advanced Placement/IB Equity
and Excellence Project for our commitment to ensuring that historically underrepresented students have the
opportunity to succeed in Advanced Placement courses. We will receive assistance from Equal Opportunity
Schools – supported by Google Global Impact Awards
and researchers at the Education Innovation Laboratory at Harvard University – to help close access and

used iPads as
the learning tool in all of their classes.
This year, all students in freshmen and
sophomore classes are using iPads, which
allow for anytime, anyplace learning.
Students are involved in deeper learning
tasks with more challenging, engaging
lessons. We are phasing in the use of
iPads with each freshman class.
Increased Enrollment in Algebra 2
and Physics
Among our Board of Education goals
is dramatically increasing the number
of juniors enrolled in physics or higher
science course and algebra 2 with
trigonometry or higher math course.
Enrollment in these courses better
prepares our students for success in
college and develops the critical thinking
skills needed in a variety of careers.
Advanced Placement Participation
We have nationally recognized levels
of AP participation. Among the Class
of 2015, 63% of seniors took at least
one AP course during their high school
career.
All four of our high schools were named
to the Washington Post’s 2015 list of
America’s Most Challenging High
Schools, based on the number of AP
exams given at a school each year, divided
by the number of seniors who graduated
that year. Last year, 2,382 of our students
took an AP exam and 72.8% of them
earned a passing grade, which could
make them eligible for college credit.
Early College Initiative
Glenbard East is partnering with the
College of DuPage to provide students
with the opportunity to earn 12 to 17
college credits while still in high school.
This year, Glenbard East juniors and
seniors may enroll in a variety of college
classes through the Early College
Initiative, a pilot program that aligns
with our focus on preparing students to
be college-ready and career-ready. This
program makes college more accessible
and affordable. Our students will pay
1/3 of the cost for each class, with the
remainder paid through scholarships.
AP Capstone
Glenbard East and Glenbard West are
two of only 3 high schools in the state
chosen to implement AP Capstone™ an
innovative program that allows students
to engage in the rigorous development of
skills critical for success in college inquiry,
research, collaboration and writing. AP
Capstone is designed to prepare more
students for the rigors of college and

success in future careers. The program
requires students to demonstrate a
passion for focused inquiry on topics of
interest and an ability to communicate
findings in a compelling way.
We are committed to inspiring and
empowering all learners to succeed. As a
result, everything we do is focused on our
students’ success. Thank you for your
continued support.
We offer a wide variety of options for students to pursue
their passions.

Board president looks forward to an exciting school year
Glenbard District 87 has started the new
school year, with seniors already looking
forward to graduation and freshmen who are
bright-eyed with the anticipation of all the
exciting adventures they will have over the
next four years. Many changes took place
over the summer, both in the schools and
in the communities we serve. Construction,
operations and curriculum are just a few of
the areas that have undergone changes this
summer.
Each year, Glenbard District 87 works to
provide improvements and expansions
that will make the upcoming school year
even better than the one before. One of
the most significant parts has been the
continued implementation of the Master
Facility Plan improvements. All of the
schools had a number of projects that
kicked off the first day school was out in
June and were completed by the time the
kids returned in August. Most significant
was the addition of air conditioning at East
and project planning for an addition and air
conditioning at West.
We had a highly productive summer
of capital projects, making significant
improvements to each of our schools.
These capital improvements were funded
by a combination of referendum bonds
approved by voters and our operating
budget. The projects were completed on
time and within budget.
We also partnered with the Village of Glen
Ellyn this summer, as they continue to make
the area around Glenbard West safe for the
community and our students. Crescent
Boulevard underwent significant upgrades
and the street re-opened before the first day
of school.
This promises to be another exciting year
for Glenbard District 87. Please take
advantage of all that your high schools have
to offer. Attend a sporting event or take in a
concert or play and see our students’ talents
on display. No matter what the project, we
are committed to providing students with
an excellent high school experience.
Significant capital improvements support students’ learning
We sincerely appreciate voters’ support of
our March 2014 referendum, which made
possible the following critical repairs and
renovations to our schools:
Board of Education President Rich Heim

the Illinois State Board of Education for nine consecutive years. Financial
Recognition is the highest financial performance level awarded by the state.
Credit Ratings – Financial Strength: Our Standard & Poor’s credit rating
remains at AA+, and Moody’s rates Glenbard at Aa1. This is the 2nd
highest rating available from each of these independent agencies.

From Superintendent Dr. David Larson
Our focus is on college, career readiness
We had a very successful 2014-15 school
year with numerous accolades for students
and staff. However, we continually seek
new opportunities for students to grow,
learn and achieve new levels of success.
With an emphasis on college and career
readiness, we are focused on challenging
students to stretch themselves. Here are
just a few examples:
We have doubled the number of students who take
AP exams over the last five years, and we are focused
on continuing to increase AP enrollment among all of
our students. Our partnership with Equal Opportunity
Schools is a significant opportunity to reach students
who have not enrolled in AP classes and show them
that they can be successful in these challenging courses.
Glenbard West social studies teacher Jim

Increased Enrollment in Algebra 2
and Physics
Among our Board of Education goals
is dramatically increasing the number
of juniors enrolled in physics or higher
science course and algebra 2 with
trigonometry or higher math course.
Enrollment in these courses better
prepares our students for success in
college and develops the critical thinking
skills needed in a variety of careers.
Advanced Placement Participation
We have nationally recognized levels
of AP participation. Among the Class
of 2015, 63% of seniors took at least
one AP course during their high school
career.
All four of our high schools were named
to the Washington Post’s 2015 list of
America’s Most Challenging High
Schools, based on the number of AP
exams given at a school each year, divided
by the number of seniors who graduated
that year. Last year, 2,382 of our students
took an AP exam and 72.8% of them
earned a passing grade, which could
make them eligible for college credit.
Early College Initiative
Glenbard East is partnering with the
College of DuPage to provide students
with the opportunity to earn 12 to 17
college credits while still in high school.
This year, Glenbard East juniors and
seniors may enroll in a variety of college
classes through the Early College
Initiative, a pilot program that aligns
with our focus on preparing students to
be college-ready and career-ready. This
program makes college more accessible
and affordable. Our students will pay
1/3 of the cost for each class, with the
remainder paid through scholarships.
AP Capstone
Glenbard East and Glenbard West are
