WELL another Easter weekend has come and gone for another year. The Scottish
Competition, run by Auld Kirk Bowmen, consisted of 1 x 36 paper faces and 1 x 36 3Ds
for the first time. Both courses were very enjoyable and most people really enjoyed
the weekend. So well done Auld Kirk.
I am going to take this opportunity to remind people of ‘course etiquette’. Now some
who shoot don't mind if there is a brass band playing behind them. Some like to have a
bit of quiet when concentrating at the peg. The problem is that it is not written on
their forehead, so let’s just afford everyone a bit of silence when 'drawing up to
shoot'. It’s just courtesy.
Peter Kendrick has stood down as Coach Co-Ordinator. I would like to thank Pete for
all his hard work and wish him every success in the future.
Another item to bring to your attention is the Medical Dispensation procedure. It
seems that a number of you have been a little confused over this and have just been
turning up at shoots with a crossbow, a cocking aid and a doctor’s note stating to the
organisers that you wish to shoot non-competitively (non-comp). Some have just gone
out on the course and only bothered to produce a doctor’s note when challenged by
other archers - and then forgotten to write NON COMP on the scorecards.
To be valid, all dispensations must be approved by the General Secretary in advance,
so you MUST send your request to him first, along with formal medical evidence. If
your application is successful you will be issued with an official NFAS dispensation note,
normally for a time limited period, which you must present to the organisers of any
NFAS venue you shoot at.
Crossbow cocking aids cannot be used except with an official NFAS Dispensation note.
And those using a cocking aid must shoot 'non-comp' because use of a cocking aid
improves the accuracy of the bow. This includes anyone who has a 'buddy' cocking the
crossbow for them.

‘The Master’
JOHN WHITMORE

I FIRST met John Whitmore at the Woodmen
of Arden in 1971 A.D., it being the British
Longbow Society's annual clout shoot in the
Midlands (Meriden).
The BLBS in those days had 161 members - the
secretary being Thomas Wright, Count Stainer,
CB Edwards and Edward G Heath (not the politician but well known author of 'The Grey Goose
Wing' etc), Richard (Dick) Galloway - props manager for films such as Robin Hood and Kirk
Douglas in The Vikings (Dick presented me with
the prototype for Kirk Douglas's viking helmet),
also Godfrey in 'Dads Army' and Val Valentine
were well known script writers, who both wrote
extensive essays on archery.
I myself was shooting a Slazenger Longbow being amazed I was being out-distanced by said
gentleman. I was at an age of the strength of a
lion - John came to my rescue, loaning me a longbow of his own manufacture to whit later he
said: “It's yours. Pay me when you can.” So at
shoots I always paid John's entrance fee (50p in
those days, which would equate to £10.00
today).
In 1972 John had the inspiration to do Roving
Marks - with Fred Lakes tutorage to history and
custom and practice thus we met at the George
Inn, Leigh Sinton, Worcestershire, and later in
Roger Trow’s parent’s pub in a church yard in
Blackpole, near Worcester, to formulate Roving
Marks.
Our first open Finsbury Roving was held at
Woodlands Farm, Loxley, in March 1974.
John Whitmore, Captain to the Mark, with the

Hulme, Roger Whitmore, Roy and Beryl
Bickerstaffe, Ron Harvey and Ron and Eileen
Palmer.
When NFAS was founded by Roy and Beryl
Bickerstaffe etc, I am pleased to remember the
Finsbury Roving Marks were encouraged and
insured by the then NFAS and held several
shoots every year till the first decade of the
21st century under the umbrella of NFAS.
John organised our first meet at Woodlands

Farm, Loxley, by the good grace of Joe Elliott.
John often recited his adventures whilst serving his National Service in the Army in our
colony in British Honduras, South America, later
renamed Belize, shooting longbow after alligators/crocodile and other game, and also when on
patrol, once making their way to the torrential
waterfalls just perfectly portrayed on television.
Upon completing his tour of duty he brought
the idea of Field Shooting back with him, establishing Severn Valley Yeoman Foresters.
John, with his twin brother Roger, were always
a joy to shoot with and dispensed a dry wit,
pleasing and beneficial.
In January 1973 John inspired to re-enactment
i.e. Plantagenent Society, practising at Woodland
Farm - thence to his first venue at Warwick
Castle, having practised - one man at arms had
an arrow on a spring lashed to his torso. John
shot the recipient, revolved and fell on the
ground with the arrow popping up. The St John's
ambulance crew ran onto the field thinking he
had been shot (what fun!!!)
John Whitmore shot at shoots all over the
country - of diffuse discipline in all weathers;
last but not least at Frankley Bowmen's
clout/field shoot in November 2011. John won
the Clout and he said to me, I quote: "John,
would you mind picking up my arrows, I can't
bend these days," to which I concurred happily.
John won the Clout and, with myself still shooting the longbow he presented to me all those
years ago, he received a Westminster Bodkin
with cheers.
Little did we know this was the last time we
would shoot with 'The Master'.

The Birth of the Compound Bow

IT’S hard to imagine any other single invention that has
so impacted any sport like the compound bow has influenced archery.
But Holless Wilbur Allen’s new bow design did just
that, it revolutionised archery. But the invention didn’t
come easily.
Holless, a mild mannered Missourian, was frustrated,
like many archers, with the low speed of his arrows. He
set about trying to increase arrow speed by designing
and building different types bows and testing his ideas.
First he built a recurve bow, laminated with fiberglass
rovings which he bonded to the limb core with epoxy. No
luck. He then tried fabricating a long handled bow with
very short, extremely recurved limbs to increase arrow
speed. Again, with no success. He finally tried shooting a
short, lightweight arrow down a track attached to his
bow. He had some increase in speed but poor penetration. This testing broke his bow, too! But nothing gave
him the speed he was looking for.
Wilbur Allen was a tinkerer, and his innovative spirit
drove him to while away many hours contemplating a
better way of building a bow that would shoot arrows
faster.
It really comes as no surprise that lightning would
strike one evening in 1966. The eureka moment came
about while Wilbur was studying his drawings of a pulley
bow, designed after reading up on kinetic energy in a
physics book borrowed from a neighbour.
“What if,” he thought, “I positioned the pulley’s pivot
hole off-centre?” That was it! Within two days, Wilbur
Allen had built and tested his compound bow. It was
crude, even by Allen’s standards – the eccentrics were
of wood, the handle of pine boards, limb cores of oak
flooring, and welded T-bolts held it together with the
help of Elmer’s Glue and epoxy-impregnated fibreglass
threads. But, it worked!
Allen achieved significant increase in arrow speed over
a recurve bow of equal draw weight, relaxation of draw
weight at full draw of 15%, and a bow that would shoot
lighter arrows than the equivalent recurve. His compound produced impressive performance.
Allen filed for a patent on his new bow on 23rd June,
1966. It was granted in 1969. By 1977, there were 100
different models of compound bows available, only 50
recurves. After only eight years in production, two
thirds of the bows on the market were compound bows.
As Holless experimented with different ways of using
the pulleys, he discovered that by using one with an offset axle (eccentrics), he created one of the biggest
advantages of compound bows - the let-off. When coupled with a cam shape instead of a round pulley, the
draw length, weight and force curve could be changed
and improved.
After several years of trying, Allen couldn’t find anyone
to manufacture his new invention, the compound bow, so
Allen began making his own bows, sure in the knowledge
that they would catch on.
However, when he was making his own compound bows
he realized that he had a error in the design, as he kept
on stripping the fletching off his arrows. The crossing
cables in the centre of the bow were interfering with
the arrow's flight. By 1967 Allen had figured out that
he needed to add an extra set of ‘idle’ wheels that were
mounted at the centre of each limb. These idle wheels
were set at 90 degree angles to the limb-tip, and this
allowed the cables to now cross to one side of the centre line so that they no longer interfered with the
arrows' flight path. With more research, Allen added
riser-mounted adjusters so that the archer could use
different cable lengths to attain different weights.
These adjusters were gear-driven and acted very much
like the machine heads for tuning a guitar.
Holless Wilbur Allen had laboriously contrived a rather
complicated device that performed a relatively simple
task – to shoot an arrow faster.

Cumbria Challenge 2012
THE Sunday of the Cumbria Challenge will be at North
Lakes Field Archers’ woods at Edenhall, Penrith. As the
shoot is not being held at our usual woods, please call me,
Dave Fuller, on 07929 251928 for full directions.
Alternatively, directions and a map are available on the
NFAS website for members with internet access.
Those attending the shoot on Saturday will be given
directions for Sunday’s shootif required.
Directions can also be provided for archers who are camping at Mains Farm, Kirkoswald.

Mid Week Shooting
MANY archers shoot on a regular basis at their clubs mid-week.
Retirement, shift work and self-employed flexibility seem to be
the reason that many enjoy this facility.
When asked, most seem keen on the idea of ‘informal friendlies’
at different venues, and many of these ‘mid-week shooters’ seem
to like the idea of enjoying field archery on an informal basis –
flexible time to start, half day/full day, no pressure to score
unless you want to, and the variety that a different course
offers.
South Wilts, Bath Archers and Cranmore will experiment with
this format and each club will manage their own shoots. NFAS
current membership essential and club shooting style restrictions apply.
The first will be on Wednesday, 16th May at South Wilts (36
Big Game); the second on Wednesday, 13th June at Bath Archers’
Hunstrete Woods (2x 20 Big Game - some extinct! Wooden

arrows only); the third at Cranmore on Wednesday, 11th July (36
x mixed 3Ds and Big Game).
And the cost? £3 half day, £5 full day.

Magic Dragon Archers
HERE down in sunny Kent we have
been working hard to celebrate our
first birthday as a club. And what
better way to celebrate than to
have a shoot.
So we would like to invite you all
to our first ever shoot. Pre-book
and pre-pay is preferred. The reason being that we are newbies at
this and would like to have a rough idea of numbers. It
helps the catering and stops admin from having a breakdown!
The course is fairly flat, and we hope that even though it
is a 2 x 20 it will challenge you all.
So hopefully we will see you all there on Sunday, 24th
June. It is a 10.00am start and we will have catering on
site. See you soon...

Her Perfect Shot

LOUISE Winters sighed as she pulled back
clumsily yet again, her movements jerky and
strained. She could feel the tension in her jaw
as she fumbled for an anchor point and tilted
her head, nestling her face against the bow
string and lining up with the target. Her back
and shoulder muscles cried out at the weight of
the bow – slightly heavier than she was used
shooting. She tried to forget that she was being
watched. It was just her and the target. Relax,
focus, loose!
‘I’m going to take up fishing,’ she announced as
the arrow settled with a loud crack into the
tree that was way to the left of the target.
Her foot slipped on the muddy track as she
walked away, only serving to add to her bad
mood. ‘I just can’t hit a thing today.’
Louise lowered her bow and let the rest of the
small group walk down to the boss and take
scores while she did her best to sulk and pout
without actually swearing that she wasn’t playing. Alan, her coach, patted her softly on the
back as he passed.
‘You’ll do better at the next one, love,’ he said
simply.
‘That’s what you said at the last target,’ Louise
replied under her breath and pulled her zip up
against the biting cold wind. It wasn’t really fair
that her coach was also her father – it made it
too easy to get mad at him for not correcting
her technique all the time. Barely sixteen, Louise
was getting frustrated that she was now
expected to compete against adults who’d been
shooting ten, fifteen or more years than she
had. Her scores hadn’t got worse, her shooting
hadn’t declined, but her draw length was longer
than it had been just six months ago and her
dad had bought her a new, higher poundage bow.
Shame she couldn’t hit a thing with it. And not
for want of trying either!
I just want one perfect shot today she told
herself. Is that really too much to ask?
Admittedly this was only their fourth target
of the day, but if it was any indication of how
things would pan out for the rest of the course,
perhaps fishing might not be such a bad idea
after all. Fishermen had a host of genuine
excuses – the fish just aren’t biting today! That

boat just scared off all the fish!
But nobody could possibly scare off a skinny
paper fox that was pinned to a stationary target. The undeniable truth was that she was no
good at this sport any more. What was she doing
wrong? The new bow really wasn’t to blame, she
knew that, but try as she might over the last
few weeks, Louise was having no luck at all with
it, and this bitter weather wasn’t helping her
spirits one little bit.
They had spent day after day practising, going
right back to basics with her father checking
her position, her grip on the bow, adjusting her
anchor point, watching her line up shot after
shot. She’d not done too badly overall, but not
once since getting the new bow had she had that
feeling - that feeling where you just know
instinctively that everything has come together
perfectly, that feeling of serenity and calm –
just her and the target and nothing to stand in
the way.
Making her way round the course with the others Louise found that not even her friend
Hannah’s jokes and bawdy laugh could take her
mind off the fact that she hadn’t once had that
perfect shot in nearly a month of intensive practice.
‘Well done that man. A perfect twenty!’ called
Harry to Alan, who was jotting down scores at
yet another stupid paper face, the outer line of
which Louise had barely scraped to achieve a
measly four points.
As the foursome walked back to the admin and
parking area to break for lunch, Hannah
snatched her own score card from Alan and
waved it in Louise’s face.
‘See?’ she said, thrilled to see she was a good
thirty points ahead for a change.
‘You’ve got such a bug up your behind about
leaving that old bow in the closet that even I’m
doing better than you today. And everyone
knows I’m no good.’
‘Gee, thanks Hannah.’ Louise narrowed her eyes
and bit into a sandwich with a sneer that made
her face curl and she bit her tongue.
‘Now look what you did!’
‘Hey, come on!’ Hannah chided. ‘You can’t blame
me for that.

‘You’re shooting badly because you’re obsessed
with your old bow, that’s all. Let it go and chill
out. It doesn’t matter how well you do with this
one, you’re supposed to do this for fun, remember?’
Traipsing back onto the course seemed like a
wasted afternoon to Louise, but maybe Hannah
had a point. Back when she’d first been learning
to shoot under her father’s watchful guidance,
she would have been ecstatic to get her arrows
more than a foot away from her, let alone in the
inner kill zone.
She’d got into archery because her parents
were fanatics, but the bug bit her too and she
had loved it. Archery had been fun back then. It
had been new, exciting, a challenge to do well
and show off her new skills to everyone who had
ever said a bad word to Louise at school.
As she steadily got better and better, the
challenge became improving her scores, winning
third place or better.
‘I lost it!’ Realisation dawned on her half way
around the course - and it was a feeling she didn’t think she would ever forget.
‘Lost what, love?’ Alan asked. He was already at
the red peg, one hand poised to pull an arrow
from his quiver... until he saw the look on his
daughter’s face. He let the arrow drop back in
and moved away from the peg without saying a
word.
Taking a shot when she knew that everyone was
watching her wasn’t about to get in her way this
time. That strand of hair falling in her face was
pushed swiftly behind an ear.
The slight breeze seemed to drop and all
around her there was silence. In a world completely of her own, Louise wedged her heel
tightly to the wooden peg, stared at the target,
shifted position for the perfect line.
She raised the bow, the leather grip warm
against her skin, felt the vibration of the string
as she pushed an arrow into place. The tension in
her jaw started to mount as she drew back and
she let out a soft sigh to loosen up. Line up.
Relax into the shot. Focus on the target. Loose!
The flight of the arrow was spot on and the
reassuring thud as it hit home was perfect. If
that wasn’t a twenty she wouldn’t care less.
She’d nailed that shot, the feeling of it.
‘Who’s next then?’ Louise smirked confidently.
Hannah’s scores at the end of the day were
still a good twenty or so points ahead of Louise,

but strangely she found that she really wasn’t
bothered.
‘You were right, Hannah.’ Louise took down her
bow and looked at it as though she’d never seen
anything more beautiful or amazing. ‘I’ve really
enjoyed it today.’
‘Thought you were going fishing?’
‘Fishing?’ She pulled a face. ‘Sitting in one place
all day with an empty keep net? I found out
something important today.’
Hannah smiled. ‘You found out that you were so
worked up about hitting the target exactly
where you wanted that you forgot about why we
do this?’
‘Pretty much,’ Louise confirmed. ‘I lost the fun
of the sport. I forgot to enjoy it just for the
sheer hell of it.’
She took off her wellies and put back on her
regular shoes, scraped mud off her jacket and
shook rain water out of her hair. ‘And I really do
enjoy it!’
‘Too right,’ Hannah replied. ‘After all, we’d be
mad to come out in weather like this otherwise!’

Coach Co-ordinator
PETE KENDRICK has resigned as Coach Co-ordinator.
The Committee would like to thank Pete for all his work
in this role.
Bernie Britton has kindly agreed to step in and take-on
this role.
NFAS shoots are NFAS shoots only
RECENTLY, some clubs have asked for shoots to be
advertised in the NFAS Newsletter and on the website
but these shoots have been open to archers who are not
members of NFAS.
Only NFAS shoots can be advertised in our newsletter
and on our website. Having non-NFAS archers shooting
means that this is not a NFAS shoot.
The involvement of non-NFAS archers voids the insurance of NFAS members and goes against NFAS rules.
This may sound bureaucratic but this rule was brought
in a number of years ago following a nasty and acrimonious accident involving a non-NFAS archer, because
there is no way of knowing the competence of non-NFAS
archers.
All clubs that advertise shoots in the newsletter and
website need to be NFAS registered clubs. The
Committee reserves the right not to advertise shoots
from clubs that open their shoot to non-NFAS archers
and may de-register clubs.

Police arrest archer
I HAVE been told of an archer who was arrested for
carrying a bow, arrows and knife in a public place.
The bow was unstrung and he was walking to a farm
where he was allowed to practice. However, the equipment was not in a case and attracted the attention of a
policeman. He now faces an appearance in court.
If the court decides to take a tough line he may face a
criminal record and possibly a prison sentence. (It wasn’t
long ago that the press was full of stories about mandatory prison sentences for anybody caught carrying an
illegal knife.)
It made me wonder though about on how many occasions NFAS members are ‘kitted’ up in public areas.
At the 3D Champs in the Lake District a couple of
years ago, the Committee sought permission from the
police for archers to walk to/from courses, but that
isn’t always the case. At a two day shoot last year,
archers were told in advance that there was going to be
a problem with parking, so on the first day I parked in a
nearby layby and then walked a couple of hundred yards
down the road to the shoot with all my gear on full display. It’s now made me think what would have happened
if a police car had driven past.
There’s a reasonable chance that a police officer would
have been understanding, but no certainty.
I’ve heard of several clubs where archers park on local
roads, so it is something to mull over if you are in this
situation.

Membership renewal and
helping at shoots
NOT everybody renews their membership straight away.
This is just to remind you that the new membership year
started on 1st April 2012 and unless you have renewed
your membership you are not covered by NFAS insurance and cannot take part in shoots.
It is also worth reminding people that if you volunteer
to assist at a shoot and go out onto the course, you also
need up-to-date full or associate membership of NFAS.
Otherwise you will not be covered by insurance if an
accident does happen as you would not be covered by
NFAS Public Liability insurance because of your involvement with the shoot.
Indeed, an uninsured ‘course official’ could provide a
‘get out’ for an insurance company if an accident happens
to somebody else.

Anonymous letters – no ‘Friend’ of mine
In the last edition I highlighted that a pathetic individual had been sending me anonymous letters making accusations of cheating in the West Country.
All anonymous letters go in the bin, but there have
been enough of these letters about the same subject
that I wanted to highlight them publicly.
The last letter was signed under the false name of ‘AB
Friend of South Hams Field Archery Club’. Of course, I
have no certainty whether this person really comes from
South Hams FAC, but I do know that there is no NFAS
member called AB Friend.
Since the article came out I have been contacted by
Charlie Friend of Herod's Wood Archers, who is very
annoyed that this sad individual is using his surname and
wanted me to make it clear that he is not the ‘AB
Friend’ who has been signing the letters.
John Cavill, Chairman of South Hams, has also been in
touch to assure me that he has no knowledge of the culprit who is claiming to be from South Hams.
Both are rightly upset that somebody is hiding behind
a false identify to make accusations. As I have highlighted before, this individual does not have the gumption to put their own name to the accusation or to provide any independent collaboration of the accusation.
Simply saying that “everybody knows that A & B are
cheats” does not constitute evidence and smacks more
of malice.

Committee members wanted
Near Hit Report
FIELD archery is a sport run entirely by volunteers. Without volunteers giving up their time to
run clubs, marshal open shoots and national competitions and contribute to the running of the sport
nationally through the NFAS Committee, the sport
as we know it would not exist.
Volunteers are again sought for the NFAS
Committee. Committee members serve terms of
three years before facing re-election.
This year five Committee members will have
served their terms of office: Coach Co-ordinator,
General Secretary, Membership Secretary,
Newsletter Editor and Safety Advisor.
Candidates can propose themselves for any of
these positions and, where there is more than one
candidate for any role, then we will hold an election.
The good news is that we have candidates for
three of the five positions because the current
incumbents have said that they wish to stand for
election again. These are:
SOMETHING unusual has happened recently and I have
received a flurry of calls and emails regarding an incident
that took place during an open shoot.
I am very grateful for the level of communication and it
has enabled me to really get my teeth stuck in to the incident and look at the contributing factors.
I have had contact from a range of people: the archer
who shot the arrow, some of his group, more than one
member of the group in front and some from the club who
were running the shoot.
As usual, I keep the names and places to myself – so if
you are reading this on the web board then please do the
same if you are aware of the circumstances and respect
the process.
The ‘near hit’ in this case happened when an archer (and
the rest of his group) failed to notice that the group in
front had not fully cleared the target – they had not yet
given the “all clear” signal which was required.
The arrow which was shot went over the target and slid
along the ground, ending up a few metres from the
archers who were not yet clear.
From the reports that I have received, there were several contributing factors:
• There was a lapse of concentration from the
archer. This was also the case for the rest of
his group who also did not notice that the
group in front were not yet clear.
• The shoot had been progressing slowly and the
group with the archer who shot the arrow had
spent a good deal of time discussing the target
whilst they waited for the group in front to
shoot, score and move on. This meant that...
• ...the warning signs, which they had passed on
the way to the pegs, were not fresh in their
minds when they were waiting for their turn to
shoot.
Things to consider:
• Always be aware of the group in front and
make sure that you can see that the area behind
the target is clear before you shoot.
• If you are laying a course, consider ensuring
that any warning signs are clearly visible from
the red peg (or the first peg which might be
shot from – eg Wasp).
There was another ‘near hit’ reported within the communications, although only indirectly reported. At one point
during the shoot an archer returned to a target to
retrieve an arrow that they had not collected before moving off from the target. If you forget an arrow at a target then do not return to the target until you see the following group collecting their arrows – it is far better to
remain safe and (in the case of an arrow) collect it from
the ‘lost arrow point later. It is also possible the following
group will bring your lost property to you at the next target.

spent a lot of time on your own lately. This is not like

swing of making Sunday shooting your priority.

THIS is a swashbuckler in the best Hollywood tradition. It is 12th Century Lombardy and a
young archer, Dardo Bartoli (Lancaster), is compelled to join the rebels fighting the dastardly
Count Ulrich after his wife has been killed and his son is taken by the bad guys.
Nick Cravat, who plays Piccolo, was an acrobat who was teamed with Lancaster before
Lancaster became a star. He appears in
many of Lancaster's movies. In this
one, he plays a mute. The reason was
that his thick Brooklyn accent, which
he could not lose, would have been wildly out of place in such a period piece.
The glamorous Virginia Mayo plays the
love interest and after a lot of ‘swashbuckling’ Dardo reunites with his captured son, marries Miss Mayo and
everyone leaves the cinema fully entertained.
The movie got two Oscar nominations
– Cinematography and musical score
(Max Steiner).

THE day started with snow, but a bright warm sun to go with it meaning the snow soon melted and a good
day’s shooting was had by all.
A mistake was made in the Longbow scoring when one of the card scorers transposed numbers of one of the
scores, giving an archer a higher score. The other scores were re-checked and were correct.

19th February - Broadland Bowmen
Shoot report by James Carrigan
A NICE bright day greeted the 63 archers who turned up to shoot Broadland Bowmen’s rearranged February
shoot, which has now been changed from January.
Although very cold in certain parts of the wood, namely the field side, a good day was had by all on our
course, which was set out by Richard Groves and David Alan.
All the archers shot and dispatched the targets with very few losses, helped on the way with plenty of hot
food and drinks. So thank you Wendy and the two lads who once again stepped in to help when Wendy had to
go home early.
Thank you to all the archers who supported our club’s shoot and we hope you can all make it back for our
Master Archer shoot on 20th May, which will consist of 36 3Ds.

CLAYTON Woodsmen’s shoot was held at Northwood Lane, Staffordshire.
It was a rewarding day for archers who attended on this warm day, so a very big 'Thank You' from all our
members and especially myself, Elaine Hunt. This venue was used for the very first NFAS open shoot and 40
years later, we are still up and running.
Our door is open to more challenges and, hopefully, happy archers.

WE WOULD like to thank the 180+ archers who braved the eclectic weather conditions, which included sunshine, cloud, rain, hail and wind-chill, to support our mixed 3D and Big Game shoot.
We extended the planned 1 x 36 shoot to 1 x 40 to cater for the numbers who had pre-booked, making this a
record turnout. On the day our visitors shot an approximate 50/50 split of paper faces, 3Ds and a couple of 2Ds.
Brian Pickles’ full size 3D Kodiak Bear made its fourth appearance, this time shot over the weir at well over
40 yards.
Our 7ft high by 3ft wide Shrek face was repaired for the day to help keep the children happy - both young
and old!
We are pleased to report that there were no major problems and everyone appeared to enjoy themselves.
Thanks go to all our members who helped, in particular special thanks to our juniors, Callum Harrison and
Rebecca Greenfield, who worked very hard all day while their parents helped in catering and admin.
Finally, our thanks once again to all you archers without whose help in clearing the course after the shoot
would made our job very hard indeed.

Tea Tent Tale - The New Boy

MY GROUP was stopping for lunch at the champs. Behind me, Mike called out and waved across the clearing to
where another group was just heading out to start the next circuit.
“That was my lad. His first champs…” I didn’t catch the rest, but you could hear the pride.
I’d not met Mike before, but I certainly heard all about his son as we shot the second half. Like the first time
he touched a bow, aged three. Mike had been in his garage and the kid had come wandering in, heading straight
for the bow in the press. Thinking about little fingers getting caught in cams and a sticky face poking into the
sight, Mike said he’d yelled so loudly his son cried. To make it up, Mike had bought the kid a bow of his own,
bright green plastic, with three yellow sucker arrows. This time, it was Mike’s wife that yelled and the pair of
them were bundled into the garden.
Target 25: steep downhill to a standing bear. That started Mike off on another story about his son’s first 3D
shoot, aged five, with his new bow, the same height as him. This was long before orange pegs, so the arrows kept
hitting the ground, but Mike said the kid never gave up and kept trying until, on the last target, he managed to
hit a standing bear. Then came the day’s only tears, because he wanted to take it home.
I was delighted to finish with twenty-four on a sneaky pheasant. After handshakes and thanks, I got my scorecard back and was pleasantly surprised. I knew I had been having a good day, but with conversation and focusing
on scoring someone else’s cards, I hadn’t thought about my own total. I calculated carefully. Overnight, I had
been in second by eight points (though one of the juniors was nearly fifty points ahead of all of us). This might
be enough. We emerged from the woods back at the tea stop, to start the final walk down the track.
Cards in, boots off and gear back in the car. Mike was having a word with admin, then gave me a wave. A few
people asked me if I’d had a good day, ‘not bad, not bad’. Found out a couple of other scores, and, so far, I’m still
ahead. I can’t stop watching the admin cabin, waiting for someone to emerge with sheets of paper.
Here we go. Third – yes, I’m well ahead of that. Second? What? But that’s me. But who…?
I shook hands with him of course. He’s the same height as me. Turns out Mike had put his son down as a junior
on the entry form because his 16th birthday was only last week and then had to dash to admin to change it. He’d
been shooting red pegs for two years apparently. Still, I’ll get him next year, because by then he’ll have discovered girls!
