Lend Me Your Ear...
Greetings, fine readers
of mine. Toots is confined to her quarters. You
will not see Toots on the
streets of Chicago for the
next few days.
Why, you ask? Well,
because They are finally
on to me. Yes, They! My
question is “Who Are
They?” The million dollar question. I don’t think
anyone knows exactly
who They are. But They
are always around.
They won’t let us do it,
they won’t let us have it,
they will get us, they are
watching us... Conspiracy Theory as its best. And
They have zeroed in.
Toots is now on the
lam, stealthily moving
from town to town. They
will never take me alive.
I have modeled myself
after Dr. Richard Kimble,
the Fugitive. I am innocent and I shall prove it.
I will gather my forces
(my readers), erect soap
boxes (to stand on) and
yell out, “Hell no, I won’t
go!” I can see it now and
I am excited. I shall overcome the evil forces.
Okay, Madame Editor,
I admit that I am totally
carried away this time.
No, actually They are
not after me. Why am I
confined to quarters, you
ask? Simply because I
hate this weather and I
choose to go into hibernation mode.
I was out and about
on Saturday - not looking my most fantastic
self. Yes, “old grey” was
upon my head. Stopped
to take a picture of some
geese on a school lawn.
Beautiful - fresh snow
with over fifty geese. The
sign says, “Don’t feed the
wild life.” And Toots was
not. All of a sudden a car
pulls up and the occupant screams, “Get out of
there.” Huh! Toots looks
and this woman is irate.
Wow! So Toots waves at
her (and does not flip her
the bird as first instinct
demands. And... no pun
intended. Get it... bird?)
So Toots continues to
line up her shot and this
woman is still screaming. Toots slowly begins
to saunter to her vehicle.
The woman (with a truly
“ugly face” - don’t let an
angel pass you, honey or your face will stay that
way) screams, “I will
kick your ass.” Huh! So
Toots begins to walk over
to her and tells her, “Bet-

ter “ugly faces” than you
have tried - so have at it.”
She roars off. Lady, get
a life and unscrew those
facial muscles. Your big
mouth is certainly not
your most attractive feature. You are very ‘grinch
like’, sayeth the Toots.
So the lesson of this
week is “Calm your ass
down.” Relax!! Life is
way too short to be miserable all of the time.
Stop and smell the roses,
for cry eye! Or... take a
picture of the geese!
Oh, and second lesson
of the week: Toots, pay
attention! You are not a
brain surgeon. Learn to
follow instruction. You
must learn to obey commands. Be responsible.
Listen to the wise words
of Madame Editor at all
times. You must follow
the great example of the
great Madame Editor.
Yes, Madame Editor Toots knows she should
not use the word ‘ass’ in
columns. I am using the
definition like in donkey
- not as in derrière (notice
me getting in my French
connection). Is this permissible, Old Great and
Grand?? Am I good??
Readers, one more little tip - that you may be
able to use in your own
lives. See the superb way
I worked Madame Editor
this week? I incorporated
my ‘suck-up’ in with the
lesson. Know when to
suck it up. Got to hand it
to Toots, not as dumb as
she sometimes appears.
‘til next week...

Queen of Peace students studying for
certified nursing assistant license
A typical student takes
classes in college to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. The students at Queen of Peace
are anything but typical.
With a strong drive and
high motivation Queen
of Peace students are currently studying for their
Certified Nursing Assistant license.
The CNA class is a new
class at Queen of Peace.
It is being offered to help
students get ahead of the
curve with their future
careers. Students are taking courses at the PULSE
school 3 afternoons a
week. Upon completion
of the course and passing
all tests, students will be
Board Certified as Certified Nursing Assistants.
There are currently ten
students enrolled in this
program. The students in
this class are eager to begin a career in nursing and
this certification gives
them a jump start. Many
nursing programs require
that you have completed
the CNA program before
you start their program.
Our students will have
their certification before
they even enter college.
In today’s hospitals and
extended care facilities, a
Certified Nursing Assistant is an important part
of a healthcare team and
Queen of Peace is happy
to be able to assist these
students in gaining their
certification.

MWRD Meany thanks Governor
Poets Pen…
Another Homeless Puppy
by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh
While I’m shoveling off the sidewalk
In the front of my house
I saw a little puppy running my way
He was chasing a mouse.
But the little mouse had disappeared
Running out in the street
And the little puppy stopped real fast
At the bottom of my feet.
President Kathleen Meany
of the Metropolitan Water
Reclamation District of
Greater Chicago (MWRD)
recently thanked Illinois
Governor Pat Quinn for his
commitment to clean water
and flood protection. The
Governor has recognized
Now the reason that he had stopped
Because I began to holler
He was about to run out in the street
I noticed he had no collar.
Where did this little puppy come from?
I’d never seen him before
I thought he may just be a house dog
And he snuck out the door.

What Do You Do For A Living?
Lutheran School teacher for 17.5 years. Public
high school for 3 years before that, and a Product
Designer for 22 years before. I teach at Gloria Dei
Lutheran School, 5259 S. Major. For information
regarding Gloria Dei School, call 773-581-5259.
One Of The Biggest Events In Your Life?
When a young man at our high school offered me
a ride home from play rehearsal and we began discussing God. He said, “You need to meet my Pastor. He’s really cool.” He asked me to church the
next Sunday. That fellow became my husband.
The Best Advice That You Ever Received?
If it is worthwhile doing, it is worth doing with
passion. “Feel it in your soul, so it becomes part of
you.” That was the way my mother said it to me.
Most Unusual Thing That Has Ever Happened?
While landing at O’Hare Airport during a bad
storm the plane was struck by a bolt of lightning.
The lights went out temporarily, and a “ball” of
lightening raced up the aisle. It was pretty spectacular. One of the young businessmen traveling
on the flight quipped, “I wonder why they call it
the final approach?” and we all laughed so hard it
was impossible to be scared.
Who, Or What, Is Your Inspiration?
My inspiration has always been my Lord. It has
been a close relationship for my whole life.
Any Advice For The Youth Of Today?
Acquire skills from all sources: parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, teachers, pastors, coaches, and the various people you will meet. Not everything can be gained from the internet.
Anything Else To Add?
One of the most rewarding things I have experienced is teaching in a Lutheran school. Because
the classrooms are relatively small, and the goal is
one of striving for mutual understanding, one can
accomplish so much! Also, there is an atmosphere
of freedom to express the best in each teacher, and
by that, the best in each student. Lutheran schools
offer so much: the test scores of Lutheran schools
at the benchmark years of 4th, 8th and 10th grade
in science and reading are outstanding when compared with all public, parochial or other private
schools. (NAEP Study). Lutheran schools fare the
best of private schools. Lutheran schools foster an
atmosphere of respect: for the individual, the community, and the Lord. Because of this, students can
grow in a spirit of support.
the need to address critical
infrastructure thoughout
the state and is doubling
the investment in clean water projects. Meany added
how grateful she is that the
Governor has earmarked
$2 billion for projects such
as replacing ancient water
mains, upgrading sewers
and building waste water
treatment plants statewide.
“This is excellent news for
all the communities in the
District’s service area. I
encourage local governments to pursue funding
for their water infrastructure projects through the
Clean Water Initiative.”

The Musical Conscience Of America
On 1/27/14, America
lost an important contributor to both her musical heritage and social
conscience with the death
of Pete Seeger. He was a
tireless performer and activist who used the power
of song to champion the
labor movement, civil
rights, peace, nuclear disarmament, environmentalism, and social justice.
The son of an ethnomusicologist at Yale,
and a concert violinist,
he dropped out of Harvard to aid Alan Lomax
in preserving folk songs.
Performing and living
in a commune in Greenwich Village he founded
the Almanac Singers and
later the Weavers. During
World War II he served in
the Army in the Pacific
“strumming my banjo”.
A songwriter, Seeger
wrote or co-wrote “If
I Had A Hammer”,
“Where Have All The
Flowers Gone”, and
“Turn! Turn! Turn!”. He
popularized “Guantanamera” and “Wimoweh
(The Lion Sleeps Tonight)”. In 1950, The
Weavers were #1 for 13
weeks with “Goodnight
Irene”. In 1952, they
were blacklisted by the
House Un-American Activities Committee. Their
songs were banned from
the radio, their concerts
canceled, because of
Seeger’s previous affiliation with the Communist Party. When called
before the Committee
in 1955, Seeger refused
to plead the 5th Amendment as so many others
had done. Instead he invoked the 1st Amendment
guaranteeing freedom of
association. He was convicted of Contempt of
Congress, which was later overturned on appeal.
Pete Seeger took the
old Labor song “We Will
Overcome”,
changed
“Will” to “Shall” (it
opened up the voice better), and was instrumental in making it the anthem of the Civil Rights
Movement.
Seeger was the recipient of many honors including the Songwriters
Hall of Fame, the Rock
& Roll HOF, a Lifetime
Achievement Grammy,
and a National Medal of
Arts.
Woody Guthrie wrote
on his guitar, “This machine kills fascists.”
Seeger wrote on his banjo, “This machine surrounds hatred and forces
it to surrender.”
Pete Seeger died of natural causes in New York.
He was 94.

425 illegal guns seized in 1st month of 2014 Sandoval Goes Red for Women, Heart Disease
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry F.
McCarthy recently announced Chicago Police
have already seized more
than 425 illegal firearms
in the first month of 2014,
underscoring the danger
illegal guns pose to public safety and police officers alike. Superintendent
McCarthy was joined by
police command staff, including Englewood (7th)
District Deputy Chief
Leo Schmitz.
“After historic lows
in crime and violence in
2013, January saw continued progress, yet much
more work remains to be
done and no one will rest
until everyone in Chicago
enjoys the same sense of
safety,” said Superintendent McCarthy. “We continue to make progress,
like the near all-time lows
we saw last February and
March, but it will become
more challenging without
better laws that help keep
illegal guns out of our
communities and punish
the criminals who carry
them.”
Every year Chicago Police recover more illegal
guns than officers in any
city in the country, a fac-
tor of lax federal laws as
well as lax laws in Illinois
and surrounding states related to straw purchasing
and the transfer of guns.
Additionally, without a
state law requiring real
jail time for criminals
carrying illegal guns, offenders can quickly be
back out on the street.
On January 30, Officers in the 8th (Chicago Lawn) District apprehended an offender
in an attempted murder
after seeing him fleeing
the scene where he shot
a man. The offender, a
22-year-old
convicted
felon named Jovan Williams, was charged with
Attempt First Degree
Murder and Aggravated
Battery/Discharge Firearm in the incident.
In April 2012, Williams
was convicted of Felon in
Possession of a Weapon
and sentenced to 3 years
in the prison. Instead, he
was made eligible for
boot camp, credited with
time served, and paroled
in September 2013. With
a three-year mandatory
minimum for illegal gun
possession, he would
have been in prison and
not have been on the
streets to commit a shooting last week.
This was not Williams’
first illegal gun conviction, nor was it the first
time his punishment
did not fit the dangerous crime. In April 2011,
Williams was convicted
of Aggravated UUW and
sentenced to one year in
prison. However, he was
credited with time served
on that illegal gun sentence and paroled just 3
months later.

was joined by WICS TV Channel 20
News Anchor Maggie Poteau, by ‘Going Red for Women and Heart Disease’
at the State Capitol.
“There’s a lot of talk about inequality
between men and women, but one area
in particular where women are leading
in record numbers is heart disease,”
said Sandoval. “It’s the No.1 killer of
women and more deadly than all forms
of cancer.”
Senator Sandoval is asking everyone
to observe ‘National Wear Red Day’
with ‘Go Red For Women’ on Friday,
February 7, 2014 to help fight women’s
No. 1 killer- heart disease. For more information on this nationwide movement and to learn how you

New volunteers start the New Year right
Did you make a New
Year’s resolution this
year? 45% of Americans
usually do. Many decide
to volunteer and give
back to the community. It’s easy for resolve to
dwindle as January drags
along, with cold weather
and the post-holiday let
down making it all too
easy to just stay home.
Only 8% of New Year’s
resolutions are successful. That’s why it’s so
remarkable that despite
a polar vortex and busy
schedules, nearly 50 people started out 2014 by attending a volunteer orien-
tation at Little BrothersFriends of the Elderly,
Chicago Chapter, the first
step in making a difference in the lives of lonely
elders around the city.
Little Brothers-Friends
of the Elderly is committed to relieving isolation
and loneliness among the
elderly. It serves 1,340
Chicagoans ages 70 and
older, who are aging without the support of family
or friends. Little Brothers offers volunteers the
opportunity to truly be
a friend to seniors in the
city through visiting and
socialization programs.
Little Brothers is a
volunteer-driven organization. Each year, over
1,000 volunteers visit elders one-on-one, drive to
parties, deliver food bags,
help with events, deliver
holiday gifts, call to chat,
and brighten elders’ lives.
Little Brothers volunteers are all ages, from
children who visit elders
with their parents, to people in their nineties. The
next volunteer orientations at Little BrothersFriends of the Elderly are
Feb. 5, 8, and March 22.

St. Symphorosa students engaged in various projects
Learning about Egyptian mummification
The sixth graders of St. Symphorosa School, 6125 S. Austin, enjoyed learning about
Ancient Egyptian Mummification when Mr. “H” from the Field Museum came
for an “in-house” field trip on Jan. 23rd. The students experienced, first hand, the
process of entombing. They are now eager to embark on their study of Egypt’s past.

Clerk Mendoza, aldermen introduce landmark legislation to protect animals and consumers
Chicago City Clerk
Susana A. Mendoza and
a coalition of aldermen
recently introduced the
Companion Animal &
Consumer Protection Ordinance which limits the
retail sale of dogs and
cats from pet shops in the
City of Chicago to those
sourced from shelters
and other humane adoption centers.
The proposal promotes
the welfare of animals,
protects consumers, and
will save City tax dollars by increasing animal
adoptions and decreasing
costs associated with euthanizations.
“We pay dearly for failing to curb the sale of
puppy mill animals. This
legislation is going to
save the lives of dogs and
cats and spare pet owners the heartache and cost
of bringing a sick animal
into their home. Also,
I’m happy to say that this
addresses a big challenge
the City faces in terms of
finding resources to care
for strays and abandoned
animals,” Mendoza said.
Mendoza said many
consumers unwittingly
support an industry that
has a well-documented
track record of mistreating animals. An estimated 99 percent of dogs
sold in retail stores are
from puppy mills.
“Puppy mills are places
where industrial scale
breeding takes place
to maximize profit. As
man’s best friend, dogs
have served as companion animals for ages.
They serve as first responders with our police
and firefighters. There’s
no acceptable level of neglect of these animals,”
Mendoza said. “This
ordinance is a humane
compromise that would
encourage adoption and
still allow consumers to
find a breed-specific pet
from an approved animal
rescue or a non-commercial, responsible breeder,
which are permitted under this legislation.”
The legislation is overdue in Chicago as already
more than 45 cities in the
United States and Canada
have passed similar legislation, including Los Angeles, San Diego, Austin,
Texas and Toronto, Ontario, according to Cari
Meyers of the Puppy Mill
Project - Chicago.
“This legislation is essential for the City of
Chicago to protect our
consumers who, for
years, have not been told
the truth about the origin
or quality of the puppies
sold in pet stores. I have
to believe that if consumers really knew the con-
ditions that these animals
are coming from, they
would not support such
systemic, large-scale cruelty. Beyond that, why are
we bringing thousands
of new animals into this
city each year when tens
of thousands of dogs and
cats are in our shelters
and rescues at the city’s
expense? This would be
a win-win for the City of
Chicago, our consumers,
and the dogs suffering
in puppy mills,” Meyers
said.

Animal & Consumer
Protection Ordinance and

Life... is like a box of chocolates - a cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory
gift that no one ever asks for, unreturnable because all you get back
is another box of chocolates. So, you're stuck with mostly undefinable whipped mint crap, mindlessly wolfed down when there's nothing else to eat while you're watching the game. Sure, once is a while
you get a peanut butter cup or an English toffee but it's gone too fast
and the taste is fleeting. In the end, you are left with nothing but broken bits filled with hardened jelly and teeth-shattering nuts, which,
if you are desperate enough to eat, leaves nothing but an empty box
of useless brown paper.

Dear Editor:
Many organizations, including PETA, will celebrate World Spay Day on February 25 by offering
reduced-cost spay/neuter surgeries. If you haven’t already, there’s no better time to have your furry family
members “fixed.” Spaying and neutering save lives
by preventing more cats and dogs from being born
only to be abandoned on the streets, euthanized in
shelters, abused, or neglected. Sterilizing even one
animal makes a huge difference: Just one female dog
