The 2012 Business Plan
HOW WILL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IMPACT YOU?
New job creation and business expansion impacts businesses
by creating meaningful opportunities for Chamber members to
sell their goods and services to new businesses and residents.
The Economic Development Division will work with industries
both large and small in our community to increase job growth
and business expansion as well as with individuals to increase
our growing small business community.
Objective: Create economic investment and jobs by using
a proactive marketing approach to attract new businesses,
both large and small.
Staff will identify and create a priority list of target industries
and retail stores for business recruitment with a result of 15 new
businesses opening in the Rogers-Lowell area in 2012.
Staff will develop and distribute 150 relocation packets to
be used to attract relocating businesses to the area. Marketing
materials in the packets will include: “The Good Life” relocation
guide, DVD, community profile, map, business directory and
website information.
An online database of available industrial, commercial office
and retail property for sale and lease in the Rogers-Lowell area
will be reviewed and updated 12 times a year.
Objective: Proactively promote expansion and retention of
local businesses and industry.
Staff will conduct at least 200 Business Retention and
Expansion Surveys (BRE) with both non-minority- and minorityowned businesses in cooperation with the Northwest Arkansas
Council. The surveys will be conducted on a bi-annual basis and
will help the Chamber and NWA Council learn about industry
needs and potential expansions and relocations.
Staff will assist businesses seeking to expand workforce and
infrastructure within Rogers-Lowell.
Objective: Support or lead the process to identify regional
community development initiatives to advance the region’s
competitiveness for jobs, workers and capital investment.
Partner with area colleges and universities, along with
the NWA Council, to provide 20 local industries with needed
workforce training identified through the Business Retention
and Expansion surveys.
Partner with the NWA Council, Innovate Arkansas and the
Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center
to establish a small business accelerator for local businesses
using an existing vacant building in Rogers-Lowell. Thirty local
companies will apply and be accepted into the program over
a three-year period, with fifteen companies increasing their
workforce and expanding to the point of being able to afford
office or retail space in other parts of the city.
Objective: Expand services and retail amenities to help
attract a diverse, first-class workforce.
Identify target retail amenities for business recruitment
with the goal of four new retail and/or restaurants opening in
Rogers-Lowell in 2012.
Staff will develop and distribute 360 marketing and
informational packets to be used for workforce recruitment.
Marketing materials in the packets will include: “The Good
Life” relocation guide, DVD, community profile, map, business
directory and website information.
innovative web tools and other recruitment marketing.
Increase the number of visits to the newly-redesigned
online job bank found on www.RogersLowell.com by improving
accessibility and ease of use. The job bank’s new user-friendly
interface makes it easier for potential employees to apply for
jobs and for employers to post open positions.
Create and maintain an online resume bank that allows job
seekers to post resumes for review and employers to search the
resume bank to fill positions. The Chamber hopes to receive at
least 65 resumes each year to post on the website.
Objective: Recruit and retain a high-quality workforce.
Participate in at least one college fair and one internship
event each year to market the Rogers-Lowell area as an ideal
place to live and work.
Plan, coordinate and host one job fair a year featuring
60 exhibitors for at least 1,000 jobseekers, which will help
businesses find candidates locally in a cost-effective way. The
event will also help local jobseekers learn about available job
positions throughout northwest Arkansas.
Objective: Engage in small business outreach.
Staff will create an online small business tool box by
researching and compiling up-to-date materials on starting a
business in Rogers-Lowell. Materials will be available in English
and Spanish.
Educational and professional development seminars will be
recorded and posted on the Chamber’s website so members
who weren’t able to attend these seminars can still benefit from
Chamber programs.
Staff will publish and distribute 150 “Doing Business in
Rogers-Lowell” guides in both English and Spanish in 2012.
The guide will be continuously updated with changing laws and
regulations pertaining to businesses.
Members of the Small Business Council will host six Member
Orientations each year. Attendees will learn how to best utilize
their Chamber membership to grow their business.
Twelve small business owners will be recognized by being
named a “Small Business of the Month.” Each of the monthly
recipients will be in the running for the “Small Business of the
Year” award. These awards will help engage and encourage
support of the small business community.
Plan, coordinate and host the NWA Business Conference
& Expo each year with 200 or more businessmen and women
in attendance. This regional conference will provide attendees
with networking opportunities and professional development
and educational seminars.
Partner with the Small Business Administration, SCORE and
the Arkansas Small Business Development & Technology Center
to provide educational seminars for at least 10 start-up and 10
young companies on the basic skills and resources needed to
start a small business and successfully grow a business.

International Festival with an estimated attendance of 8,000
to 10,000 people. This festival promotes cultural diversity
by showcasing traditions from the numerous nationalities
represented in northwest Arkansas.
Implement a Minority Business Mentorship Program where
20 minority business owners will have the opportunity to learn
important lessons as well as receive professional advice from
their experience mentors. This will strengthen the minority
business community and help businesses succeed by sharing
knowledge, expertise and resources.
Staff will assist 15 individuals interested in starting and
completing the Minority Business Enterprise Certification (MBE)
program. This program helps minority-owned businesses partner
with larger businesses to gain access to resources previously not
available to them.
Coordinate and implement a Minority Business Task Force
that will provide 10 business leaders with the opportunity to lead
the Chamber’s minority business-building efforts by reaching
out to minority-owned businesses each year. Minority-owned
businesses will benefit from having an open venue to voice their
concerns.

northwest Arkansas, which allows the Chamber to highlight
regional areas of need and build support among legislators from
around the state.
Objective: Establish regionalism to leverage economic
development for coordinated marketing, messaging and
advocacy efforts.
Strengthen chamber alliances with Fort Smith, Little Rock
and northwest Arkansas by attending four meetings each year

of commerce. This will help staff better understand legislative
needs throughout the area and utilize their political influence to
encourage passage of pro-business legislation.

agenda each year. This regional plan will improve legislation and
provide a benefit to the entire region.

Chamber to Host New Series on Region’s Economy
The Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce is embarking upon a series of programs entitled Focus on the Economy.
This series will highlight areas of northwest Arkansas’ economy that are critical to its continued success. For this series the
Chamber will focus on healthcare, local businesses and infrastructure.
THE PROGRAM’S GOAL IS THREEFOLD:
1.
2.
3.
Determine the economic impact of these highlighted areas.
Find out what these areas need from the Chamber and Community to be successful.
What the role of government is in ensuring the success of these areas.
To accomplish these goals the Chamber will hold three public events featuring experts
and community leaders from the highlighted areas addressing the program’s goals and
facilitating a community-wide discussion.
The first topic to be addressed by the series is healthcare in northwest Arkansas.
This lunch-time event will feature a keynote address and panel discussion with
representatives from area hospitals, health organizations and related agencies. These
experts will review the impact of healthcare on the region’s economy, discuss the
future of healthcare and highlight ways to minimize an employer’s healthcare burden.
After healthcare, the series will focus on infrastructure, which includes roads,
trails, rails and transit challenges in the region. The panel will review critical
projects, possible financing sources and what role infrastructure plays in economic
development.
Finally, the series will examine local business and outline ways the community,
government and business owners can work together to encourage success.
Please go to www.rogerslowell.com to find dates and more information
for each event. Contact Michael Lindsey at [email protected] or 479619-3193 with any questions.

Going Up – Get Your Business Headed in the Right
Direction with the Perfect Elevator Pitch
How would you explain your business and make a sale if fate placed you in an elevator
with your dream prospect and you only had the time it takes to get from the top of the
building to the bottom?
Every entrepreneur needs an “elevator pitch” that is clear, powerful and can tell your story
in 60 seconds or less. Do you think you have what it takes? Register today for the “Gone in 60
Seconds” elevator pitch contest where $1,000 will be up for grabs on March 22 at 7 p.m. at
Mellow Mushroom in Rogers. The contest is open to entrepreneurs and aspiring
entrepreneurs who want to pitch their brightest ideas to local investors and
business leaders. More than 200 people attended the event in October. Interested
participants or sponsors should register online at www.innovatearkansas.org.
Audience particiaption is free and encouraged, so come out and cheer on your
favorite “elevator pitch.”
Creating a Strong Sales Message
Figure out what is unique about what you do. - The whole idea
behind a great elevator pitch is to intrigue someone. It’s an icebreaker and a marketing pitch — all rolled into one.
Make it exciting. - A superior elevator pitch increases your heart
rate. It speaks to who you really are and what excites you about
your business. It has integrity. What is it about your business that
really motivates you? Incorporate that.
Keep it simple. - A good elevator pitch doesn’t try and be all
things to all people. Rather, it conveys a clear idea in a short
amount of time. It might be a few sentences, but no more than a
paragraph or so.
Write it down. - Use the guidelines above and take a stab at it.
Write down your pitch, say it out loud, re-write it, and then re-write
it again.
Practice, and the practice some more. - The first few times you
try out your elevator pitch may be a bit uncomfortable, but it gets
easier. After a while, it will become second nature to you, and
when it does, you will be glad you practiced.

Health Care Reform & Regulations All
Business Owners Need to Know About
Our March 9 FYI Brown Bag Lunch presented by Del Monte Foods will feature Cammie Scott
of CK Harp & Associates with a presentation on the ongoing issues of Health Care Reform. Since
the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on March 23, 2010 employers have
been looking for answers – what happens when and how do I comply? Many rely on their health
insurance agents who have had limited training and limited time to find the answers to their clients’
questions.
As a senior professional in human resources and Chartered Healthcare Consultant, and a guest
faculty member of the University of Arkansas Global Campus, Cammie Scott has vigorously studied
this act. Her presentation will include a Q&A so that you may get answers to your questions that
may not be covered. Cost containment in an ever-changing benefit environment will be included
in the discussion. This event is free, with registration required at www.RogersLowell.com.
“Business-to-Business is my FAVORITE
networking event by far! I have generated
more leads and the most contacts from
this event. This is a great networking
opportunity that every company should
take advantage of!”
–Elizabeth Naylor with Get Thin Now
