.SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY YMCA (The Y)
If we don't attend to our youth, then who should we attend to? With that as a lead-in, I am pleased to tell you about one of several local
organizations attempting to do that; the San Luis Obispo County YMCA. Our local YMCA, which is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was

formed in 1956. Its mission "is to develop the total person through values-based programs that build strong kids, strong families and strong
communities", by "striving to nurture the spirit, mind and body of people of all ages." A goal is encourage members and program participants to
develop positive character attributes, supporting them in addressing some of their most formidable health and fitness challenges.
And while its headquarters are in San Luis Obispo, the Y provides preschool, after school programs, day camps and youth sports in South
County. Its school-based programs are at Shell Beach Elementary, Harloe Elementary, Grover Beach Elementary and Fairgrove Elementary
Schools. Its preschool is at Fairgrove Elementary. It operates youth sports activities in South County, including basketball (in partnership with 5
Cities Basketball) and roller hockey, and operates the skate park programs in Grover Beach. County-wide, the YMCA also operates day camps,
adult sports activities, teen programs and adult and family fitness programs. All of this is done with just over 20 full time staff. The rest of its staff
are part time and part time seasonal. At its activity peak (typically in the summer), it has over 150 staff. The YMCA also has the support of

hundreds of volunteers annually, primarily in its youth sports programs as volunteer coaches, with a number of volunteers from South County. It
has a volunteer South County Advisory committee of local community leaders that supports its programs with visibility and fundraising.
The YMCA is funded through program fees, membership dues, government contracts and charitable contributions. The fees vary depending on
the program. However, the Y has a practice of not turning away families due to financial constraints and offers financial assistance based on
need. Last year, the Y granted over $125,000 in financial assistance to families, primarily for youth programs, with a large percentage of the
financial assistance going to families in South County. Those funds are raised through its annual support campaign, which also provides support for general programs and special curriculum (such as its "Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Curriculum" in its after school programs).
Donations can be made online at sloymca.org or via mail at SLO County YMCA, 1020 Southwood Drive, SLO 93401. The website is the best
way to learn about the programs of the YMCA, and one can register for the majority of its programs online. You can also call the Y at
805--543-8235 or stop by at 1020 Southwood Drive, SLO (next to Sinsheimer Pool). Monica Grant CFRE, is its Chief Executive Officer.
