Celebrate Glen Cove!
Please join the Glen Cove Chamber for an
unforgettable Gala Evening!
Message from
the President
As the cooler months approach, we
need to gear up to face the less than
improved economy and jump at
every opportunity to make business
happen. The Chamber provides the
events for those networking
opportunities bringing members
together to exchange information
and services or, otherwise, connect.
However, it is the follow up that is
critical to the success of your
networking efforts. The sooner you
follow up, the sooner you will find
those hot leads, preferably within
three days. Reaching out can take
several forms including offering
information concerning a challenge
expressed during your first meeting,
suggesting joining the networking
group, in this case the Chamber if
they haven’t yet done so & requesting contacts that are appropriate to
your business. If you maintain some
communication it will be easier to
know your prospects better. In the
case of the Chamber, frequent our
general membership meetings held
monthly and those once strange
faces become familiar ones.
Referral business then takes on an
ease through which your business
can grow.
I am proud to serve as President of
the Chamber and be a part of the
ways we help our member
businesses.
Gathering together,
networking and sharing pertinent
information affords opportunity.
That’s our job to do …yours to
complete is to follow up and turn
those prospects into real customers!
I invite all members to visit our
Chamber office and make sure your
business is represented on our
directory, and, at the same time,
select contacts you have still yet to
reach. Our membership is growing,
make sure your business grows
along too!
Note from
the Executive Director
September is here & although I
am not on a school schedule, I feel
that the new season is another
start. Perhaps it is because the
Chamber conducts less meetings
and events in August that I have
the need to start afresh. In doing
so, there are some members who
are so giving and devoted that
they deserve special recognition.
These people have come forth to
make my job a little easier & for
that I am most appreciative. Stevenson Printing recently moved to
the first floor of the same building
and contributed reams and reams
of paper and boxes and boxes of
envelopes for Chamber use. What
a savings! Glenn Howard will
appear to help out on a moment’s
notice. Anthony of NYPC has
unlimited patience when instructing new web site functionalities.
Mary Stanco always stretches her
hand out to help in any direction
and Lisa Cohn imparts her wonderful sense… even in humor!
These are just some of the marvelous individuals I work with that
share the enthusiasm to grow the
Chamber.
Much more in the limelight are
the well deserving honorees for
our 2010 Gala who have made
significant contributions throughout our community. I am fortunate to work closely with some
and others that I do not know as
well but will feel the same after
planning this elegant event. The
Gala celebration is or next phase
of our event planning and as this
takes shape it does signify the
Summer is surely over. So as I
sharpen my pencils and bring out
a brand new folder, Gala 2010, I
look forward to all new happenings for the remainder of the year!

Plan Ahead for Your Visit to the
Emergency Room
You hope an illness or injury doesn’t send you or a
family member to the emergency room (ER), but
if the situation arises, rest assured that boardcertified emergency medicine physicians, nurses
and other healthcare providers are available 24/7
at Glen Cove Hospital’s Peter and Emily Crisp
Emergency Center to attend to your medical
needs.
With some advance planning and preparation,
you can make a trip to the ER a little less stressful
by providing current medical information to staff
members and bringing the following items with
you:
Identification with your name and address. A
driver’s license is ideal.
The name and telephone number of someone
the hospital can contact in an emergency.
Your insurance, Medicare or Medicaid card.
The name, address and phone number of your
doctor.
The name, dose & frequency of medications
you take.
Names of any medicines that you are allergic
to (be sure to include any latex allergies).
Relevant past medical history such as recent
surgery or medical procedures.
Information or the documentation of advance
directives such as a Health Care Proxy or Do No
Resuscitate order.
Glen Cove Hospital’s Emergency Department has
the latest advanced technologies and 25-state-ofthe-art private observation, evaluation and
treatment rooms, which include cable TV and
telephones. Other conveniences include: bedside
registration to speed up the check-in process; a
concierge service for family members and visitors;
and a hospitality room with complimentary
snacks and beverages.
John D’Angelo, MD, chairman of the hospital’s
Emergency Department, said a major goal of the
ER staff is to connect a doctor with a patient as
quickly as possible, regardless of condition. “We
strive to provide the highest level of care as
efficiently as possible and in the most comfortable
and caring environment,” he said.

Move- In Condition Takes On New Meaning
A new approach to opening an office has taken out
the headaches usually associated with this transition.
Small businesses can easily move or open a new
office readily aiding the business
person more time to devote to business rather than
running the office. Instant offices can be leased with
flexible time so that it can accommodate the terms,
short or long, that a business requires. Office suites
come fully furnished and, in some cases, can even be
staffed so that business can be conducted
immediately. This is exceptionally helpful for a new
business or a home-based business looking to
expand. Another ideal situation created is that a
business can have a presence in this new location
and yet never be required to work there. These
“Virtual offices” have services available so that a
business can utilize a receptionist to take phone
calls, accept packages and allow the usage of
conference rooms for meetings. Surely, a business
can come right in and get to their business at hand!

I would like to give thanks to the Chamber for providing
the opportunity for me to meet Carolynn Dubicki from
A Place for Mom. She has helped me time & time again
while I was looking for advice and services for my 91 year
old mother in law. We are currently using a home health
care agency that Carolynn recommended and they have
been wonderful. I recently found myself in distress trying
to find a psychiatrist who treats elderly patients with
dementia. It seems they are a forgotten population. I
emailed Carolynn as a last resort not really expecting her
to know anyone and she found someone local. I would
highly
recommend Carolynn's services to anyone with
any need or concerns about the elderly people in their
lives. She never charges a fee & she provides a wealth of
information concerning eldercare.

Consistent Visibility is Key
In a difficult economy, such as we are experiencing,
maintaining branding is not always easy and requires
additional time and resources. It is tempting to cut back
on money to build and market your brand but you don’t
want to fall out of your customers’ minds. Perhaps reassessing your budget for marketing efforts would be better
spent. An online presence can yield advantages.
Also, be visible in your community and join local organizations (Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce is a perfect
place to start). This affords you the personal visibility to
be representing your company. Within, align yourself
with community needs donating, for example raffles for
the Glen Cove Gala or offer to provide seminars to reacquaint your business to let’s say, a Chamber general
membership meeting.
Maintaining consistency offers strength to your business
markets rather than reaching out to your less than focus
target groups. Remember, the Chamber exists to help
your business grow, allow you to be visible in our business community and brand you for the business sector
you aim for.
Keys to a Strong Brand
Consistent-sticks to its brand promise or message
Localized-understand local needs
Different-has a defining quality or characteristic that sets
it apart

Facing the Fear
Young couples usually plan to have children after
several years of marriage and some sense of security
with their jobs. The nine-month waiting period is
filled with great anticipation and high expectations
for what everyone hopes will be “a bundle of
joy.” For some new parents, the initial months may
present an inkling that something is different. The
baby is not responsive and/or does not respond in
the same way as other infants. For parents who
already have children, there is an opportunity for
comparison that new parents do not have. Usually
somewhere around 16 to 18 months when the baby
is not walking and/or communicating, the pediatrician will suggest that a call be placed to the Early
Intervention Program through the Department of
Health (516) 227-8661.
The fear that something is wrong with the child can
be overwhelming for parents. Days of anxiety may
be offset by the fear there is going to be a diagnosis
of a disability. It is important for parents to know
that it is always better to go through the process to
find out if there is a problem. It may not be a
disability and it may not be a developmental
delay. It may be that the child’s developmental
difference falls within the average range. Parents
need to acknowledge their concerns and not let
others tell them, “Don’t look for trouble” or “Boys
are slower than girls.” As a parent, no one knows
your child as well as you do; go with your
instinct. If you are worried about your child, do not
hesitate to ask professionals for information.

The Department of Health through the Early
Intervention Program will send a service coordinator and evaluators to your home to discuss your
concerns. Evaluations are provided at no cost to
parents along with therapeutic options. The Early
Intervention Program is wonderful because it takes
away the fear and anxiety to settle a parent’s
concern one way or the other. If there is a developmental difference, then services such as speech
therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy
will be provided immediately. The significance is
that the child’s problem will not remain
undiagnosed; services will be provided to facilitate
physical, social and language development. It is
always better to know and to be proactive rather
than reactive.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GLEN COVE
MANSION!
August is the month in which The Mansion
celebrates its Centennial. The historic Georgianinspired country home of John and Ruth Pratt
first opened its doors at the height of the
extravagant Edwardian Era. Originally known as
“The Manor” this 55-acre estate remains entirely
intact. In 1967, the Glen Cove Mansion became a
luxury conference hotel and continues to serve
our area as well as travelers throughout the U.S.
with the same elegance seen a hundred years ago.

"The approach to this mansion is magnificent.
The grounds are just as beautiful."
Make a Healthier New YOU!
Colon hydrotherapy is better known as "colonics",
an easy method to assist your body in healthy
digestion and elimination.
We Americans have developed very poor eating
habits since the advent of refined food products
and easy accessibility to fast food. This puts
greater emphasis on having clean intestines, the
body's sewer system.
Colon hydrotherapy
accomplishes necessary cleansing and other
benefits:
better hydration, increased energy
levels, happier mood and outlook, clear skin,
improved concentration, better absorption of
vitamins and minerals, reduced pressure in the
abdominal area, sensation of well-being and
weight loss!
