I have been a Kaiser employee and UHW member for
over 15 years, and chief shop steward for the past 5 years.
At the request of our members, I am running for
Executive Board. I presently serve on the following
committees: LMP DSA, JAT, Managers & Chiefs, LAB Steering, UBT Sponsor,
Steward Voting and HNS Safety, and lots more.
I realize this is a great responsibility. If chosen to fill this position I will honor
SEIU-UHW GENERAL LEADERSHIP ELECTION 2014
the following responsibilities:
1. Representing the interest of all members within my constituency;
2. Being a steward & chief;
3. Understanding the issues affecting the membership by talking to stewards,
members, and union staff; attending steward council meetings; conducting
facility visits; being accessible to members; and attending membership
meetings;
4. Being visible by attending actions for the union and other unions;
representing the union at central labor council, public board, and
community meetings;
5. Identifying, promoting, recruiting, training, and mentoring stewards and
members;
6. Participating in and recruiting members to participate in the union’s
organizing campaigns.
In closing I say vote for me, Linda Hunter, someone you can trust and count on
to represent you to the fullest.

necessary to advance our goals and initiatives, and to improve the ties between
union and member. In these turbulent times, I hope to keep our members

My name is Hillary Distefano over the past several years I have focused on
representing the rights of my fellow co workers. If elected to the Executive
Board I would continue that fight to ensure that our issues and concerns are
held at the highest priority. I will represent my constituents with loyalty
and perseverance to help build and maintain a strong united front. I will
not hesitate to address members interest. I look forward to serving you.

I was a part of UWOC during the trusteeship. I have always
understood what the power of union means.
Being on this leadership team to me means:
Coming together with all divisions across our union to
support and drive the work that helps our communities, gives
us better bargaining power, being a part of organizing the unorganized.
Knowing the difference I can make in my children and community lives.

I would like to be on the Executive Board because I enjoy
working with people and learning new things. Being on the EBoard will allow me the opportunity to work for and with our
union members as we learn and grow together.
LEODIS CONLEY JR
Slate: SEIU-UHW Members United for Strength (MUST)
My experiences on the past executive board were very enlightening:
learning the steps of addressing the entire body of the Eboard, challenging
issues and concerns, working on resolutions, teamwork, and developing a
strategic awareness while representing all members across our union’s
divisions (Kaiser, Hospital, Nursing Home, Home Care).
I am totally encouraged to continue our great work on the Eboard, and to
further enrich our members’ livelihoods and lives, and the communities we
serve! It was definitely a surreal experience, an exciting moment in my life.
I was a part of a lot of great campaigns for bettering and improving the
lives for all Californians. Let’s Get Healthy CA was one of those
extraordinary campaigns, another was on June 4,2013 when our Eboard
had thousands of members at the state capitol lobbying for the first time in
their lives! So all can say is mighty, mighty, mighty union!

What it means to me to be a part of this leadership team is to
be a part of the work we do to make not only workers lives
better, but also how we are now reaching out to our
SEIU-UHW GENERAL LEADERSHIP ELECTION 2014
communities. With the attack now on unions I understand why it is important
for us as SEIU-UHW members to show how we reach across all our divisions
and work together to organize the unorganized. I know the work we do now
helps us at the bargaining table, and it also helps me to provide a better life for
my daughter.

The strength of the union is in its collective voice. As an
employee of twenty seven years and Chief Shop steward
for 26.5 of those years here at Kaiser, I have worked
various departments and positions and I can say with
confidence, it’s truly unity which brings the perspectives
of the members to light. I have been on many committees’
and worked on lost time for the union many times. I have served on the
executive committee for a little over a year for its remainder of that term. I
am willing and capable to represent all of our co-workers and move this
union, as well as our facilities forward with continued leadership and
representation in SEIU-UHW. The responsibilities of this executive seat
are vital in dealing with the subjects of today for our union. I would like the
opportunity to finish what we just barely started before my term was up in
a little over a year. Please elect me for executive committee to represent
your voice. “Vote for the MUST Slate”. Thank you

Slate: SEIU-UHW Members United for Strength (MUST)
My name is Eric Abbott, and I’m running on the SEIUUHW MUST slate our Executive Board. It would be a
privilege to represent the voice of our San Jose, Gilroy,
and AACC members. As an executive board member, I will
strive to speak on behalf our membership, help push our
political agenda, and ensure that the labor movement grows in strength and
influence. I have experience on my department’s WPS team, the Integrated
WPS Subcommittee, and Live Well Be Well. I am currently a Molecular
Genetics Technologist, steward, improvement advisor, UBT co-chair, lead
our Local Resource Network, and am the Union Partnership Representative
(UPR). The infrastructure and many of the programs that I have helped
drive and spearhead are touted as “best-practices” for Northern California
and all other regions. My experience as a steward and your UPR,
supporting labor in all of our Unit Based Teams, has taught me that
transparency and clear communication are vital to the success of any
representative position. As an Executive Board member, I know that my
experience will help serve the interest of our membership, making our
union stronger and advancing the labor movement across the country.

SEIU-UHW GENERAL LEADERSHIP ELECTION 2014
I am running for a seat on the Executive Board of our
union on the SEIU-UHW MUST slate. I want to represent
the San Jose Medical Center and Appointment and Advice
Call Center to ensure our union grows in membership,
increases in political strength, becomes a premiere
healthcare organization, and continues to improve in representational
excellence. I have been a leader in this union since I helped the Health
Educators join as a member of the bargaining team in 2007.
Since then I have become a Steward and eventually a Chief Steward. For the
past 2 years I served the San Jose Medical Center and AACC as your
contract specialist. I have also represented the Labor Management
Partnership as a labor sponsor and facilitator for our UBTs and helped
make the San Jose Medical Center the model not only for the Northern
California region but for all of Kaiser. My goal as your representative on
the Executive board of SEIU-UHW is to make sure you are educated about
the vision and direction or our union and make sure to represent your
interests to the best of my ability.

My name is Rosalie Garcia Bernal. I’m running for Eboard
because I would like to be part of a group that brings
positive change to our organization. I would like to be able
to keep our members informed on all our progress and
accomplishments in our organization’s future. I can make a
positive impact to the Eboard organization, because I have
been a Steward for the past three years. I’m also the Santa
Clara Council Cope chair. I have a deep passion for COPE

and where these funds go. In the past year, I have gotten involved in the
branch of our union in which we support immigration reform – which our
COPE funds also support. I have attended rallies that support immigration
reform in the Central Valley and I have also gone door to door to prompt
immigration reform. I also have a passion for healthcare reform. I have
attended two community events to help out on the healthcare sign ups. I
also have the support of my family on all the issues that I am passionate
for. My family has helped me and has attended all these events to help
SEIU-UHW. “Vote for the MUST Slate.”
SALIVIENIA BROWN
Slate: SEIU-UHW Members United for Strength (MUST)
My name is Salivienia Brown, known as Sally! I’m your
Rep Chair and a Chief Steward. I have worked for Kaiser
for 19 years. I have learned a lot while working at Kaiser,
and I continue to learn. I’ve represented some of you in
different cases or maybe have just answered some of your
questions, concerning your union rights. I’ve been honest
and shared my knowledge with you. I would like to learn
more by being on the Eboard. I am asking you for your support by voting
for me as one of your executive members on the board!
Being on this Board will allow me to be your voice, to voice your concerns,
and allow me to be your ears to hear what changes are being proposed. I
will be able to bring back my knowledge and share it. I will gladly receive
your feedback and share the knowledge that you have with the executive
board. With your knowledge and my knowledge, as a Kaiser employee,
together it will help me be even a stronger board member.

Slate: SEIU-UHW Members United for Strength (MUST)
My name is Marla S. Heath; I have been the Chief Shop
Steward for SEIU-UHW for eight years and an employee
of Kaiser Permanente Hospital for more than 12 years in
the Surgery Department. I am currently serving in the
role of Contract Specialist. Born in Sapulpa Oklahoma, I moved to
California in 1987, and I currently reside in Gilroy.
I am running for Executive Board to advocate the rights for members while
gaining more experience that will make me a good candidate. My
experience as Chief Steward, ability to communicate, and listening skills
have taught me to handle different situations as they arrive, giving me the
knowledge to perform the duties expected and represent the board and
their voice. I believe any good elected official is one that continues to listen
to the opinions and the sentiments of those represented. As such, if elected
again as an Executive Board Member I will continue to work, listen, and
properly convey the feelings of the members and the issues. “Vote for the
MUST Slate.” Thank you

Hello, my name is Sarah Minjoe and I have been
working for Kaiser Permanente for over 8 years. I
really like my job and the people that I work with.
Part of the reason I enjoy working here is that our
union, SEIU-UHW has really worked hard for us so
that we have the best benefits possible. From job security to sick leave,
vacation days & medical benefits. I believe we truly are blessed to be
working here; it’s not only a blessing for me but my family as well. I would
like to help our union move for word in the upcoming years. This is why I
SEIU-UHW GENERAL LEADERSHIP ELECTION 2014
would like to put my name up for nomination for the SEIU-UHW Executive
Board. “Vote for the MUST Slate”
TIM ROSE
Slate: SEIU-UHW Members United for Strength (MUST)
I’m a Registered Dental Assistant at Santa Clara, and I’ve
been here at Kaiser for 2 years. Growing up I remember
always wanting to work for Kaiser because my mother has
worked at the Santa Teresa campus my entire life. She
always said what a great job it was and what great benefits
she received. As I got older, I came to understand that the job and benefits
were as good as they were because of the support of the union. After joining
the Kaiser family, I got involved by becoming a steward as soon as I could.
To me there is nothing as fulfilling as being part of a group that has the
opportunity to help others enjoy and feel secure in their jobs. Being part of
UHW allows me to help my coworkers and make sure people are able to go
home and continue to brag about their job and the benefits they receive.
This is why I am taking the opportunity to run for the Eboard on the
upcoming ballot so that I can continue to do all I can to help my Kaiser
family members. “Vote for the MUST Slate”

Hello, my name is Kennice Gary and I have been a union

understand why your family does some of the things they
do, but in the long run it’s always for your best interest. I see the difference
every time I hear my friends talk about their jobs and the problems they
face. Having a strong union is very important for not only the members but

I believe in the goals of our union and wish to be part of

always in the process of making changes to how they
conduct their day to day services, which directly affects
our union members.
Our leadership must have a presence which is positive and effective in our
facilities, providing clear and correct information on what our union’s goals
are nationally as well as locally. We must continue to protect our local
contracts while supporting the efforts in our communities so that all
families can have affordable healthcare. As healthcare workers we can no

SEIU-UHW members, and help my co-workers/members in any way to make
this union stronger. I want to be on the executive board because I’m memberdriven, and I’m always there for my co-workers.
If I am elected to the executive board I look forward to being of service to my
co-workers and helping them with any issues they may have. Please vote for me
and the entire SEIU-UHW MUST slate.

I’m seeking the position of executive board member to
represent the members at Kaiser WLA. I’ve been tried and
vetted as a loyal and trusted SEIU-UHW member. During
my SEIU-UHW membership I’ve held many positions that I
am very proud of.
During the last 3 years I’ve been a union steward where
represented and returned many members to their jobs after long and
intense grievances. I also sat on three impact bargaining teams where we
were successful in securing great packages for our members. For the past 2
years I have had the honor of being WLA’s COPE Chair. I currently hold the
title of Ed-Fund Champion where I take pride in informing WLA members
of their opportunities with the Education Fund.
Representing the members at WLA has been my joy since the first day I
became a steward. My intent has always been to learn the contract so that I
can better represent our members and if I am elected as your
representative on the executive board I will continue to protect your
interest. Frank Cerna and Verna Hampton are both running with me to

To all my Fellow Co-Workers at West Los Angeles: I am
asking for your support as I am running for a seat on the
executive board for the term of 2014-2016. We all know
we need to place the right people in these seats as this is a
very important role in our union. I am currently the
contract specialist for West Los Angeles, and was
previously a chief steward. I have also bargained for our
members that have been rifted. These positions have helped me prepare
myself to lead our facility to success. As executive board member I will
focus on the union’s main priorities, especially representational excellence.
Together we can continue to benefit from our contract and protect it. As
one of your leaders, I will do everything in my hands to make your voice
heard at the table.
I’m running with our co-workers Verna Hampton and Yitskshaq Abraham
(“Shaq”). Please vote for all three of us and we’ll keep working hard for
you. Thank you in advance.

I’ve worked for Kaiser for almost 30 years, have been a
steward for over 15 years, and at Kaiser West Los Angeles,
I’ve enjoyed working for my union and co-workers.
I work closely with the rep chair and the union rep for the
facility. We keep our members informed and fight very
hard for what we believe is right. As ethics officer, I could
help members and the executive board understand how our industry as a
whole is to be run – from the conditions employees usually work in to what
tools and practices are required to what standard policies and procedures
are. I feel I know how to communicate with others well and would be more
than glad to teach others and leave a very good impression on how the
process is to go, so when I retire, the work we did will be in place for others
to see.
As Dr. King said he had a dream, well so do I – that we get those million
members, have 10,000 leaders, and be the best representational excellence
team in the nation.
