CHAPTER 4
MODERN MANUFACTURED AND
COLLECTIBLE DOLLS
From the 1960s–Present
The dolls in this chapter were made by various doll companies that are still
operational and by some that are no longer in business. Dolls from the past that
were formerly played with by “Baby Boomers” and those enjoyed by “Generation
X” are today’s collectibles. For most collectors, these dolls conjure up pleasant
memories of the past. Baby Boomers fondly recall owning dolls manufactured by
Effanbee, Horsman, Ideal, and Mattel. Generation X is more inclined to warmly
remember dolls made by Galoob, Kenner, Mattel, and possibly Shindana Toys,
Inc. Dolls manufactured by other companies, past and present, have also become
present-day collectibles for a variety reasons.
Many of the dolls referenced in this chapter were created for adult collectors,
for example, Alexander’s Wendy, Terri Lee’s reproduction Bonnie Lou and PattyJo, and Robert Tonner’s Tiny Dru and Dru. Tonner’s Tiny Dru is the first darkskinned doll to use the same mold as American Character’s 1957, 8in/20.32cm,
Betsy McCall. Baby Boomers may remember Betsy McCall paper dolls that were
published in McCall’s Magazine beginning in 1951 through (at least) 1970. Neither
the paper doll nor the three-dimensional Betsy McCall characters had a black friend
until 2002, thanks to Robert Tonner’s 2002 Betsy McCall Convention Dru. Later, in
2004, 14in/35.56cm Basic Dru debuted.
Chiefly manufactured as a child’s toy, several dolls created for the play line
are considered highly collectible. These include dolls made by American Girl, My
Twinn, and many others. Little girls love these dolls as
well as adults.
The manufactured dolls in this chapter cover the
period from the 1960s through the date of publication.
They are made of various mediums, which include vinyl,
rigid or hard plastic, and porcelain.

Horsman Doll Company is one of the oldest doll manufacturers in the United
States. The company made a variety of play dolls that included black versions of
white dolls during the modern years of manufacture. Unless the doll is a familiar
mold, i.e. Ruthie, their Softee line of dolls, Thirstee Baby or Thirstee Walker (1960s–
1970s, without the box, it is difficult to identify most Horsman dolls. The
company used the same names for different molds throughout the years and many
of the molds look similar. Doll designer, Irene Szor is credited for several doll molds
from the modern era. Many Horsman doll boxes include the acknowledgment, “An
Irene Szor design.”
One of Horsman’s most elusive black dolls from the modern era is
Princess Peggy, a 36-inch Patti Playpal lookalike. The doll was featured in their
1960 catalogue with short curly hair and in the 1961 catalogue with long black
hair with bangs. She appeared in other Horsman catalogues during the 1960s as
well,usuallywithlongblackhair,dressedinavarietyofoutfits.Inthecatalogue
illustrations, Princess Peggy appears almost identical to Patti Playpal with perhaps
slightly thinner legs. The doll, however, bears the Horsman name and copyright,
and maintains a current value of $00-$300, based on condition. Cindy, another
Horsman 36-inch walker is featured in the company’s 1967 catalogue. The doll
uses different head and body molds than those used for Princess Peggy. Cindy is
currently valued at $85.

Material: Vinyl
Height: 24in/60.96cm
Hair/Eyes/Mouth: Black rooted with grow-hair ponytail
in top, mid section/black pupil-less, stationary eyes,
smiling mouth with painted teeth
Other: Baby Crissy, part of the Crissy grow-hair
family debuted in 1973 and was
reproduced in 1981. Both versions
share the same face and body
molds; however, the 1973 doll’s
reddish brown vinyl has a softer,
rubber-like texture. The 1981
doll’s firmer vinyl does not have
the red tinge. The 1973 doll wears
a lavender baby-doll outfit while
the 1981 doll is dressed in a white
romper trimmed in yellow or green
gingham. It is interesting to note
that the 1973 doll’s box features
a beautiful African American girl
caressing Baby Crissy. In 1981, however, some of the boxes used for black Baby
Crissy feature a white doll’s photo on the exterior with a label that reads: This
Package Contains a Black Doll. Many manufacturers excluded photos of black
dolls from their box exteriors, as in the case of some 1981 black Baby Crissy dolls.
Perhaps economics played a role in Ideal’s decision to use one box featuring a white
doll for both versions. It may have been more cost effective to attach an identifying
label on the black doll’s box as opposed to using separate graphics. However, a
white doll’s box has never illustrated a black doll with an outer caption to indicate
the doll inside was white. In any case, these exclusive boxes are collectible for
those aware of this discontinued marketing method.
Value: $150 and $75, respectively

black pupil-less sleep eyes;
Tressy brown sleep eyes

and Cinnamon have painted
teeth; others have closed
smiles.
Clothing: All dolls are
dressed in original, authentic
outfits. Velvet wears an outfit
that sold separately, “On the Lamb.”
Other: There were several versions of the Crissy doll:
• 1969 Beautiful Crissy with hair that grows to the floor, also referred to
as “Hair-to-Floor” Crissy, wears an apple green lace dress with matching
panties and apple green shoes.
• 1970 Beautiful Crissy wears the 1969 outfit but her hair only grows to just
below her bottom.
• 1971 Movin’ Groovin’ Crissy has a swivel waist and wears an orange midilength dress with brown and orange rope belt, orange panties made of the
same fabric as the dress, orange boots with mock laces.
• 1972 Look Around Crissy wears a long green plaid taffeta dress, matching
panties, and green shoes. Appropriately named, when her pull string is
extended, she turns from side to side and “looks around.”
• 1973 Swirla Curla Crissy is dressed in an orange and white plaid dress,
white panties, and orange Mary Jane shoes.
• 1974 Twirly Beads Crissy wears a pink gingham, full-length dress, white
panties, and white Mary Jane shoes.
• 1977 Magic Hair Crissy has Velcro hair attachments instead of a growhair mechanism. Her original outfit is a white camisole, pink sateen skirt,
and white mules.
• 1982 Country Fashion Crissy—at 15 inches tall, she shrank 3 inches and
her face changed! Perhaps in an attempt to exhaust remaining quantities,
Black Dolls

Ideal used the Velvet face mold and body for this Crissy. The doll wears
a pink gingham dress, white socks and shoes, and straw hat. Instead of a
tummy button and knob, the grow hair operates with a pull string.
1982–1983 Beautiful Crissy returned with the Velvet face and body dressed
in a white, lace-trimmed dress with white shoes. Unlike Velvet, this Crissy
has brown eyes with pupils.
1983 Country Fashion Crissy returned wearing a lavender gingham dress,
straw hat, white socks and shoes. The Velvet face and body molds were
used once again.
Black Tressy was added to the Crissy family in 1971 having been preceded by
her white counterpart a year earlier. Black Tressy was a 1971 Sears Wish Book
exclusive, sold only in black. A white doll was featured in the Sears Wish Book as
Posin’ Tressy.
Black Tressy wears an orange and white geometric-print dress and black shoes.
Because she was a catalogue-exclusive, Black Tressy is much harder to find today
than black Crissy and usually commands a higher price.
Black Velvet, Crissy’s cousin, debuted in 1970 wearing a lavender dress and lavender
shoes. The doll is often found wearing the white version’s purple corduroy dress.
There were several versions of black Velvet. The first two dolls mentioned below,
have the same features as the Crissy dolls of the same name.
• 1971 Movin’ Groovin’ Velvet wears a pink party dress, matching panties,
and purple shoes.
• 1972 Look Around Velvet is dressed in a plaid taffeta dress similar to Look
Around Crissy’s dress, matching panties, and white shoes.
• 1973 Beauty Braider Velvet wears a pale lavender dress with matching
velvet sash, matching panties, and lavender shoes.
• 1974 Swirly Daisies Velvet’s outfit consists of a purple/ lavender/pink/white
plaid dress with white bodice, matching panties, and lavender shoes.
• 1981 Velvet—the final issue, wears a white lace-trimmed dress with pink
ribbon at waist and white shoes. This doll has a pull string instead of a
belly button and knob.
In 1976 Tara, dubbed as “The Authentic Black Doll with Hair That Grows!” made
her debut. Tara is the only doll in the Ideal grow-hair family that did not share a face
mold with any other member, black or white. Her facial features were described as
“authentic.” Tara wears a yellow gingham pants set and yellow shoes. One side of
her colorful box features a beautiful African American girl holding a Tara doll. It
is reported that some collectors do not consider Tara an “authentic” Ideal Crissy
family member, while others feel her grow-hair mechanism and size give her Crissy
family rights. Family member or not, Tara ranks as one of the most difficult growhair dolls to find. Because of her rarity, a mint condition doll usually commands
top dollar.

Chapter 4
Cinnamon, Velvet’s little sister, debuted in 1973, a year after the white doll’s debut.
Her original outfit is an orange polka-dot short set with a white lace-trimmed collar
and orange shoes. In 1974, Curly Ribbons Cinnamon joined the family. The doll
wore the same outfit from the prior year and came with an extra denim short coverall
with yellow gingham blouse.

& Ryan and Midge & Baby arrived on store shelves. Many parents did not want
their children introduced to a pregnant doll even though the description on both
dolls’ boxes indicates they are a married couple. Many stores pulled the dolls from
their shelves. In the face of controversy, the dolls sold on the secondary market for
astronomical amounts. Of note is the African American versions of Alan and Midge
in this line are the first AA dolls given these names, which were formerly only given
to Caucasian dolls. The baby included in the Midge set can be placed in compartment
of Midge’s removable pregnant stomach. Happy Family Neighborhood Midge was
released after the controversy with Midge expecting her third child (Ryan is their
first).

need. If your daughter wants to
play with a little blond-haired, blueeyed doll, that’s fine. We think she
deserves a choice. Why shouldn’t
she have a little brown-eyed image
of herself for her very own? No
reason in the world. That’s why we
asked a fine designer to create the
first truly authentic, realistic group

Shindana Toys, a Division of Operation Bootstrap, Inc. is the first black owned
and operated company to mass produce ethnically correct black dolls and dolls of
other ethnicities. Because of their devotion to the African American community,
their dolls, “made by a dream,” remain highly collectible. Their dream was first
envisioned in 1968 when Shindana was founded as a subdivision of Operation
Bootstrap in the aftermath of the Watts, California riots. Their dream was realized
“by producing black toys that young black children can positively relate to and that

foster love among children of all races.”

Illustration 419, Shindana Baby
Nancy Ad
Their first doll, Baby Nancy, featured
in this 1968 advertisement, was very
well received. The company went
on to manufacture several versions
of this dark-skinned baby using the
original with different hairstyles. Later
versions were made using the Baby
Zuri mold with dark and light AA skin
tone choices. Baby Nancy paper dolls
and a Caucasian Baby Nancy doll are
additional Baby Nancy treasures.

“The Shindana Story (Keeping the Dream Alive)
Originally printed in the March/April 1990 issue of Doll-E-Gram, LaVerne Hall
(publisher), author unknown
“Shindana Toys, a division of Operation Bootstrap, Inc., stands alone as
the largest black-owned and operated toy company in the world. It had its genesis
in the rubble of the 1965 Watts revolt and it emerged in 1968 with a will to compete
in the face of discouraging odds. A practical recognition of this spirit is reflected in
the selection of the name “Shindana”—it means competitor in Swahili.
“Shindana was founded by Lou Smith and Robert Hall without government
subsidy or aid. Substantial working capital, technical assistance and equipment were
provided initially by Mattel, Inc., with no strings attached, as an expression of that
company’s commitment to its social responsibility in the Los Angeles community.
“Once the operation got underway, Mattel began turning more and more
responsibility over to Shindana personnel, under whose directions it would either
succeed or fail. From the beginning, Shindana’s development bore the unmistakable
imprint of Lou Smith’s leadership and insight, coupled with the hard work and
determination of hundreds of people. It was this spirit of dedication that enabled
Shindana to survive as a business whose goal was to help build the base of financial
support for Operation Bootstrap.
“In its first year, Shindana produced a single product—a black doll named
Baby Nancy, the first ethnically correct black doll made in America. Baby Nancy
Black Dolls
207
was designed with truly “Negroid” features which were in contrast with the typical
pattern of Caucasian dolls simply painted black, and she was a success in the
marketplace. Production of Baby Nancy dolls began in November 1968, and the
combined efforts of Shindana and Mattel made it possible to manufacture and ship
8,000 dolls in time for the first Christmas season.
“In 1971, sales reached $1.5 million and the young company began to
repay some of its financial obligation. Despite the loss of some of its key personnel,
the company continued to produce products under the steadfast leadership of Lou
Smith.
“The company marked a line of 32 black dolls and 6 black-oriented games.
Mr. Lou Smith is to be remembered, for his vision helped make the difference
between success and failure. He never wavered from Shindana’s objectives of
providing jobs with pride in the ghetto and showing people that they can help
themselves and that in the process they can learn to love those who may be different
from themselves. He believed that “the only plan is the commitment.” Today the
Shindana dolls are collector items.
“Mr. Smith and his young daughter were killed in an automobile accident
in 1976 in California.
“Doll-E-Gram’s Holiday Festival of Black Dolls’ ‘Shindana Award’ [was]
given each year in honor of Mr. Lou Smith and what he stood for.”
Shindana’s dream, although short lived, became a reality with sales that
extended to African nations of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zanzibar before
ceasing operation in the early 1980s.

Patty-Jo is dressed in a navy blue, nautical-style dress with matching hat. She
proudly stands in the midst of Jackie Ormes memorabilia on the desk of cartoonist/
author, Tim Jackson. In the late 1940s, Zelda “Jackie” Ormes, the first syndicated
African American female cartoonist, presented
her concept for a black doll to the creator of the
newly formed Terri Lee Company. The concept
for the doll was fashioned after Ms. Ormes’ comic
strip character, Patty-Jo. By Christmas of 1947,
the first Patty-Jo dolls were on the market. The
doll featured here is a reproduction that uses
the original Patty-Jo mold. The doll shares the

body with interchangeable heads that screwed on. [The white cloth body of the
reproduced doll has white resin arms, hands, legs, and feet.] Each set came with
several outfits and accessories. The basic set included five different heads. Additional

OTHER DARK-SKINNED DOLLS
237
In the 1960s and 1970s brown dolls were frequently used to represent African
Americans, Hawaiians, Hispanics, Native Americans, and a variety of other
dark-skinned ethnicities. During this time it was common for Native American
and black dolls to share the same mold. Changing the attire changed the dolls’
marketplace ethnicity. This practice is not as commonplace today; however, it
continued in frequency as late as the 1990s. Because collectors desire their dolls to
portray realism, more authentic skin tones and facial sculpts representative of these
ethnicities are offered. Some of the black/brown dolls from the past and some more
recent versions are illustrated next.
Illustration 495 (above), Hawaiian Dolls, ca. 1960s–
1970s: These dolls range in size from 4in/10.16cm (the
doll lying on stomach) to 12in/30.48cm (the doll on far left
that has a musical base). Music is played when the bottom
of the tallest doll’s base is wound. The base rotates as the
music is played. The dressed dolls’ wear grass skirts or
multicolored garments. Some of the dolls wear leis and/or
flowers in their hair. With the exception of one doll, all are
female. The doll wearing the yellow floral-print cloth is
male. Value: From $10 to $25

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Debbie Garrett’s interest in
collecting black dolls commenced
after the 1991 catalogue purchase of
a “collectible” porcelain doll intended
as a gift for her daughter. After the
doll’s arrival, the decision to keep the
doll and to begin a collection ensued.
Her avid interest in black-doll history
prompted research on dolls made
during and before her childhood.
After writing her first black-doll
reference book, The Definitive Guide
to Collecting Black Dolls, Hobby
House Press, Inc., 2003, Ms. Garrett
continued her doll research and
writing as the cofounder and editor of
The Black Doll-E-Zine, “the first and
only e-zine (now group) devoted to
collecting black dolls.” As a member-at-large of the United Federation of Doll
Clubs, Ms. Garrett has contributed to their Doll News quarterly publication and is a
contributing writer for Doll Castle News and other major doll publications.
Ms. Garrett, a native Texan, is the married mother of two adult children, Angela
and Adam, and doting granny of Angela’s two precocious boys. Her non-dollresearching/collecting time is spent working as a home-based, quality improvement
specialist for a leading global provider of clinical documentation.
Black Dolls
A Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating,
Collecting, and Experiencing the Passion
By Debbie Behan Garrett
Collectors and non-collectors will experience the passion for collecting dolls in Ms.
Garrett’s second black-doll reference book, which is a comprehensive celebration of over
1000 vintage-to-modern black dolls. Doll genres referenced and valued include early
dolls and memorabilia, cloth, fashion, manufactured, artist, one-of-a-kind, celebrity,
and paper dolls. ‘A to Z Tips on Collecting,’ ‘Doll Creativity,’ and ‘Added Extras’ will
entertain, enlighten, and encourage the most discriminating collector. Black Dolls: A
Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating, Collecting, and Experiencing the Passion, an
informative reference for any doll collector’s library, is the first black-doll reference
presented in combination hard copy/eBook format.
Praise for Ms. Garrett’s previous book, The Definitive Guide to Collecting Black Dolls
“Best Book of the Decade!!
… I’ve never seen a book so lovely AND informative. It contains detailed information
and wonderful photos of all types of Black dolls. I read the entire book the same day
I received it. I could not put it down. It is obviously a true labor of love. There is NO
other book that comes remotely close. … Thank you, Debbie Garrett, for writing THE
foremost resource about Black dolls!! Your book is awesome!!!!!”
–Manya Elliott, avid black-doll enthusiast (Source: Amazon.com Customer Reviews)
“I am so impressed with this book!! What a welcome addition to the dearth of books
available on black doll collecting. Debbie Garrett’s love of black dolls is conveyed so
wonderfully that even the non-doll collector will be enthralled. … From the novice
to the professional collector this book should be a mandatory addition to anyone’s
reference materials on doll collecting. Thank you, Debbie Garrett, for undertaking this
monumental task!”
