Parents, if you have
not returned a completed free/reduced
lunch application for
the 2016-2017 school
year, please do so.
Applications were sent home last week
with all students. The deadline for your
child’s “temporary” benefits meals is the
Friday, September 16. After September
16, only children whose families have a
completed 2016-2017 application submitted and approved will be allowed to
receive lunch benefits. All others must pay
full price. Thank you.

behind the Dot by
challenging students and staff to
“Make their Mark.” Inspired by the classic
story “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds, The
Dot challenges us all to make our mark on
those around us. Students are invited to
dress in polka dots and share the mark they
wish to make on the world.

Fall Fundraiser Charleston Wrap
Parents, it is Fall Fundraiser Time! BVE's Charleston Wrap
Fundraiser will kick-off this Friday, September 16. PTA has goals
of purchasing new technology, the Accelerated Reader Program,
sports equipment for the playground, and sponsoring field trips
with the money raised. Through this fundraiser, Bayou View Elementary earns 40% of the sales! Look for information and the
sales packets coming home on Friday! Thank you for supporting
our PTA fundraiser for our students at BVE!
March of Dimes
Parents,
Your child have been invited to join Gulfport School District as they partner with the
March of Dimes. Today, your child will bring home a “Change for Change” coin box. We
invite you and your child to partner together to fill the box with spare change and support
the very important work of the March of Dimes. The classroom that raises the most change
will earn an extra special prize. We are asking that each child set a goal of $5.00.
Gulfport School District’s “Change for Change” campaign will run September 12
through September 30 and will conclude at the Gulfport High Football game that evening.
Come out and wear your purple.
Children Need Routines
1. Routines eliminate power struggles because you aren't bossing them
around. This activity (brushing teeth, napping, turning off the TV to come to
dinner) is just what we do at this time of day. The parent stops being the
bad guy, and nagging is greatly reduced.
2. Routines help children cooperate by reducing stress and anxiety for
everyone. We all know what comes next, we get fair warning for transitions, and no one feels pushed around.
3. Routines help children learn to take charge of their own activities. Over
time, children learn to brush their teeth, pack their backpacks, etc., without
constant reminders. Children love being in charge of themselves. This feeling increases their sense of mastery and competence. Children who feel more independent and in charge of themselves
have less need to rebel and be oppositional.
4. Children learn the concept of "looking forward" to things they enjoy, which is an important part of making a happy
accommodation with the demands of a schedule. He/She may want to go to the playground now, but he/she can learn
that we always go to the playground in the afternoon, and he/she can look forward to it then.
5. Regular routines help children get on a schedule, so that they fall asleep more easily at night.
6. Schedules help parents maintain consistency in expectations. If everything is a fight, parents end up settling: more
TV, skip brushing teeth for tonight, etc. With a routine, parents are more likely to stick to healthy expectations for everyone in the family, because that's just the way we do things in our household. The result: a family with healthy habits,
where everything runs more smoothly.
