The Story
The West Coast of British Columbia is wild, beautiful, and home to
some of the best sea kayaking on the planet. Adventurous explorers
had long been using sea kayaks as the craft of choice to travel these
magnificent waters when Brian Henry started paddling the coastal
waterways. But Brian was a visionary, and as time went by, he saw
the need for better boats and equipment for true kayak enthusiasts.
It was at this moment in the late 1970’s Current Designs was born.
Brian started small, as
most boat builders do,
designing and building
kayaks to enable his
friends and him to better
explore these waters.
Brian quickly became
well known locally for
his kayaking trips and
paddling skills. In 1981
he took his passion a step further by opening Ocean River Sports, a
specialty store on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, in Victoria,
B.C. This small retail shop formed the foundation for launching Current
Designs to the world.
Brian Henry, founder of
Current Designs.
Brian's first production kayaks were designed and built in early
1982 with the introduction of the Pisces and Equinox. These models
were pure West-coast cruisers and became the cornerstone of the
Current Designs brand. In 1984 Brian introduced the Solstice kayak
family. These boats were a unique blend of North American and
European design that were visually appealing, functional, comfortable,
and extremely efficient. The Solstice family was extremely successful
and to this day is the flag ship line for Current Designs.
As the market for sea kayaks grew, new designs, refinements and
quality improvements became necessary. Campbell Black, a plastics
specialist, became a major working partner in the company and
under his leadership, production techniques and quality assurance
improved. New models were introduced through partnerships with
world famous designers. Legendary British kayaker Derek Hutchinson
teamed with Current Designs to produce such great kayaks as
the Gulfstream, Slipstream, and Andromeda. New England-based
kayak designer Barry Buchanan partnered with Current Designs
to manufacture his famous hard chined kayak, the Caribou. Most
recently Nigel Foster and Current Designs brought the Rumour to
the world's waters.

Rotomolded polyethylene kayak production was quickly added
to Current Designs’ manufacturing repertoire. These rugged kayaks
introduced the Current Designs brand to first-time buyers, outfitters
and rental operations at amazingly affordable prices. The success
of these rotomolded kayaks flowed directly from the designs of
their composite sisters. Continuous research and development in
design, materials and manufacturing techniques helped maintain
Current Designs promise of quality, innovation and performance.
As the popularity of kayaking boomed, Current Designs applied
their expertise to develop a recreational kayak family, the Kestrels.
The Kestrels set the standard for what is possible in a recreational
kayak by delivering paddling efficiency and comfort in innovative,
light weight constructions. These super-stable crafts are responsible
for unlocking the thrill of kayaking to many thousands world wide.
In another manufacturing first, Current Designs introduced the
light weight Vision family of transitional kayaks in 2008. Together
with their sea kayak sisters, the Visions and Kestrels broadened
Current Designs into the fullest and finest line of kayaks ever
produced.
In 1991, Wenonah Canoe, Inc., the leading American manufacturer
of composite canoes, was selected as the strategic partner to
distribute Current Designs kayaks in the United States. The synergy
between the companies
was immediately evident,
both companies produced
the highest quality paddling products and were
passionate about their
products and paddling.
Wenonah Canoe became
the majority owner of
Current Designs in 1999.
Mike Cichanowski, owner of
Current Designs and Wenonah Canoe.
Soon after, Wenonah Canoe
completed the acquisition
and in 2004 moved its home base to the small Mississippi River town
of Winona, MN.
Today, Current Designs and its parent company Wenonah Canoe
continue to operate with the same values that trace back to their
first boats; innovation, superior construction, performance, and
extraordinary service.

In the summer of 2013 Dave and Amy Freeman completed a three
year, 11,700 mile journey across North America by kayak, canoe, and
dogsled. They successfully used their journey as a platform for gaining
support and protection for North America’s waterways and wild places,
while actively engaging over 100,000 elementary and middle school
students in their expedition through the Wilderness Classroom and live
school assemblies.

GoodBetter Best
Best BetterGood
Tracking:
How easily a kayak will keep going straight.
Maneuverability:
How easily the boat will turn.
Length
A longer boat will track straighter, glide further,
and travel faster which makes long boats the
most efficient. Length also adds to stability and
capacity. A shorter boat is easier to handle and
can be more maneuverable.
GoodBetter Best
Capacity:
How much gear/weight the kayak can carry.
Best BetterGood
Initial Stability:
Best BetterGood
Final Stability:
How tippy a boat feels when the kayak is at rest.
How stable the kayak feels when tipped.
Depth
Depth is a key component of a good fit. A
deeper hull will be roomier for paddlers
with larger legs, and increases load carrying
ability. A shallower hull will be less affected
by wind, and may better fit small paddlers.
Hull Shape
We design hull shapes for the ideal combination of tracking, efficiency,
agility, and seaworthiness based on the kayaks intended use. Many hulls
are fairly complex and have different shapes blended together.
Shallow Arch:
These have good initial
stability and are highly
maneuverable.
Width
A wider kayak will be more stable than
a narrow one. Conversely, a narrow kayak
is usually more efficient than a wide
one. A wider kayak may provide more
stability for both heavier paddlers and
tall paddlers with a higher center of
gravity. A wider kayak will also enable a
paddler to spread their legs out more.
Shallow “V”:
The “V” shape improves
tracking, has a lively
feel and delivers very
comfortable stability.
Shallow Arch
Shallow "V"
Hard Chine:
A hard chine kayak has a well defined edge
where the hull bottom meets the sides. This
increases the initial stability greatly. Hard chines
give defined edging angles and assist in holding
an edge.
Soft Chine:
A smooth transition from the bottom of the hull
to the sides. Soft chines give smooth edging at
unlimited angles. The majority of kayaks that we
build have a soft chine.

Rocker
The degree of curvature in the hull from bow to
stern defines the rocker. More rocker improves the
ability to maneuver the kayak, especially in rough
water. A kayak with little or no rocker will track
very well and travel efficiently, but may be more
difficult to maneuver. We carefully control rocker to
deliver the right combination of maneuverability,
speed, and seaworthiness appropriate for each
kayaks intended use.
Form
Swede Form:
Widest behind the cockpit, Swede form has a
cleaner, longer, and more slender entry, giving
efficient touring speeds and maneuverability. In
shorter lengths these kayaks are very responsive.
Longer kayaks with this feature have amazing
acceleration and track well. Because of the narrow
bow they may punch through a steep wave,
rather than ride over it.
Swede Form: Widest behind the cockpit
Fish Form:
Widest ahead of the cockpit, Fish form kayaks
have a more blunt entry but will have a more
slender exit through the water. The bows typically
have more flare and are usually more buoyant
than others. This enables our shorter boats to be
excellent surf zone kayaks. Longer kayaks benefit
from this feature in large seas.
Fish Form: Widest ahead of the cockpit
A good "fit" improves performance and comfort.
When choosing a kayak, a common phrase you’ll hear is “you don’t sit in a kayak, you wear it.”
Like your favorite pair of jeans, a kayak that fits right will provide you with the comfort and control
you desire. We list maximum load weights for each of our models, but don't publish recommended
paddler sizes due to differences in physical proportions and paddling experience. The best way to
find a kayak that fits you right is to get in and try it.
Open Cockpit:
The Solara's feature our largest
open cockpits. These are very easy
to get in and out of, and give a
feeling of being almost completely
free from the boat. Open cockpits
have enough space to put gear
between your legs for easy access.
Keyhole Cockpit:
A keyhole cockpit blends the openness of
a recreational cockpit and the integrated
thigh braces of a touring cockpit. The
result is an easy to enter and exit cockpit
that offers performance, fit, and solid
connectivity to the kayak.
Recreational Cockpit:
The Kestrel's feature recreational
cockpits that are long enough
that you can simply get in and sit
down. They are un-restrictive and
many new paddlers appreciate their
roominess and versatility.
Touring Cockpit: Touring cockpits are somewhat small
to help resist imploding of the spray
skirt if hit by a large wave in rough
water. They include built-in thigh
braces on the cockpit rim to maximize
control when edging and rolling. They
range from 29” to 35” long, depending
on the model.

Rotational molding (rotomolding) uses a high temperature oven to melt polyethylene
powder in a large rotating metal mold. This process produces a complete kayak hull and
deck in a single step. Our rotomolded polyethylene models offer paddlers the ability to
enjoy many of the unique benefits of our designs at an economical price.

Polyethyl
We’ve taken rotomolding to the next level with
our own high-tech process controls to produce
the lightest possible rotomolded kayaks. We use
only linear high density polyethylene in all of our
rotomolded models to maximize stiffness without
sacrificing impact strength. Our polyethylene
maintains its integrity over a broad temperature
range and has added stabilizers giving it increased
protection from harmful ultraviolet rays and
oxidation. Our rotomolded kayaks are affordable,
ultra tough, highly durable, and will hold up to
more significant abuse compared to composite
constructions.

Vacuum-bagged composite lamination is the technology we chose over twenty years ago for its superior properties. Originally
developed by the aerospace industry to manufacture ultra-light, strong components, we refined that same process to deliver the
lightest, strongest, and most durable kayaks available. Today we are a recognized industry leader in this field.
NEW
!
Vacuum-bagged composite lamination uses vacuum to eliminate any excess resin, which improves strength and decreases weight.
We also utilize 3-D non-woven core materials in specific places to reinforce and strengthen areas without adding any substantial
weight. This hands-on labor intensive process results in light-weight, extraordinarily tough kayaks with an exquisite finish.
Composite Seams
All Current Designs composite kayaks have composite seams joining the deck and hull. This stronger and lighter technique of seaming
was formerly available for an additional charge. Now, composite seams are our standard of excellence on all composite kayaks!
Our vacuum-bagged fiberglass layup is a notch above most other fiberglass
kayaks on the market. The result is a superbly crafted composite kayak that’s
impeccably finished inside and out. Fiberglass is the standard layup for our
Performance Touring models.
We use genuine Dupont Kevlar® in our kayaks. You’ll notice the lightness
of our Kevlar kayaks the first time you pick one up. You’ll also appreciate its
easy lift on and off the car and its intimate responsiveness on the water.
Kevlar is an optional layup for our Performance Touring models.

better tracking, greater stability, and
gear storage capacity. A generously
sized cockpit and our Revolution Seating
System offer all day comfort. The Kestrel
140 also sports a bow hatch and bulkhead
allowing for plenty of storage and
increased safety. The greatest part, the
composite hybrid Kestrel 140 weighs in
at a mere 43 lbs. Rudder is optional.
Our ultra tough rotomolded model of the
Kestrel 140 is a solid boat at a budget
conscious price. Great to keep at the cabin
for the family, the Kestrel 140 is perfect

gear and tackle a float fisherman may
need. Flattened side decks allow for easy
rod holder mounting. And because it's
made of polyethylene, it'll stand up to
the shallow rocky river stretches without
worry. Rudder is optional.

Popular international sea kayaking figure
Nigel Foster designed the Rumour for a
highly specialized group of kayakers. The
Rumour’s narrow beam is aimed at smaller
advanced paddlers. Most will find its cockpit
to be a snug fit, but its slim profile is what
makes it an excellent rolling and swift kayak.
The Rumour has a buoyant bow and low
profile stern, with a shallow-arch hull that
transitions into hard chines and a shallow “V”
toward the stern. A great modified Greenland
design for advanced paddlers. Skeg, back
band, and thigh braces come standard.
The Suka is a Greenland style design sized
especially for smaller paddlers. The elegant
hard chines gives a sense of security when
carving graceful turns. The Suka accelerates
quickly and has excellent cruising speed for
effortless days on the water as it displays its
performance bred heritage. Skeg, back band,
and thigh braces come standard.

The Caribou is a classic Greenland style
design that has a cult-like following of paddlers
from all over the world. The hard chines on
this stunning kayak gives it amazing initial
stability and edge holding capabilities.
Couple that with its wave catching powers and
you have a great kayak that's fast, nimble,
and a pure joy to paddle. Skeg, back band,
and thigh braces come standard.
The Isle is a super-sized Greenland style design
with all their great qualities for a larger
paddler. Sized comparably to our Solstice
GT Titan, it's a unique alternative to a North
American style design. Great handling and
incredibly efficient, the Isle is an awesome
long distance tripping kayak. If you need a
big person boat and seek the edging, rolling,
and paddling qualities of a hard chine kayak,
the Isle is the boat for you. Skeg, back band,
and thigh braces come standard.

New for 2014, the Ignite leads the new wave of surf skis in its marriage of
efficiency, speed and stability. The Ignite is not an elite-level, hyper-sensitive
surf ski requiring a lifetime of skills, rather it is a surf ski for all paddlers.
It appeals to those who find sit-in kayaks too hot in warmer weather but
find conventional alternative sit-on-top kayaks lacking true performance.
The Ignite is a wonderful go-fast, fitness and fun-to-paddle craft that
encourages exploration of the surf ski realm. This design is founded on the
worldly popular and paddler-friendly Solstice GT hull. The deck is a blend
of a surf ski cockpit and rudder peddle system with a pair of kayak-style,
flush mount, water-tight hatches offering light touring potential. The
Ignites compact length and wave-ready rocker are enhanced with the highly
efficient SmartTrack® rudder system. The perfect all around surf ski whether
paddled on flat water, long weekends or in your first down-wind bump run.
