Remembering Two Iconic Griffins
Every member of the Vianney family has had an affect on this community in his or her own way. We note the deaths of two members because of
the significant impact they made on us in two very different ways.
Teacher Mr. Gene Kwasinski
Mr. Eugene Kwasinski died July 13, 2011,
following a long struggle with cancer.
Affectionately known as "Kwas," Mr. Kwasinski
taught at Vianney from 1961 to 1967 and
again from 1977 to 1999. During his long
and distinguished career, he taught Latin,
religion and developmental reading. He will
also be very fondly remembered as a football,
wrestling and track and field coach.
He was inducted into Vianney's Hall of Fame
in 2007.
“I had Kwas for freshman football, homeroom and Latin for three of my four years.
At first I was intimidated by him … but over
the years I began to see the twinkle in his eye
and recognize his deep goodness. He made a
major impact on my life,” said Charlie Hoffman '67.
and catch phrases that still stick with me today,”
said Steve Fraraccio ’95.
And although nearly three decades separated
these former students, their reminiscence of
Kwas was remarkably similar.
“Even though Kwas tried to have a rough and
tough exterior, I knew him to be a loving and
caring man. He had some of the best one-liners

Kwas was known as a strict teacher who also recognized the
value of humor.
Alumnus and artist Mr. Bob Cassilly ’68
Mr. Bob Cassilly was killed in a bulldozer
accident Sept. 26, 2011.
Artist and Vianney alumnus Mr. Bob Cassilly ’68, creating the
Griffin statue in 1994.
At Vianney, Mr. Cassilly will be remembered
as the creator of our iconic Griffin statue,
which was unveiled in 1994. As the story goes,
the original request was for two small Griffins
that would be mounted on pillars on either
side of the main drive. In typical Cassilly
fashion, the artist chose his own approach and
created one massive bronze beast.
Griffins Create “Cardboard Village”
Earlier this fall, about 20 Vianney students
and staff members experienced, briefly, the
plight of the homeless when they took part in
a “cardboard village” on Vianney’s campus.
The boys who chose to participate were
instructed to bring a cardboard box, a plastic
tarp and sleeping bag. They were expected to
leave cell phones, iPods, snacks and other
teen essentials at home.
Before adjourning to their makeshift shelters
outside, the boys attended Mass and cre-

inducted into Vianney’s Hall of Fame when it
was launched in 1997.
Cassilly was the founder of the tremendously
popular and eclectic St. Louis City Museum.

“Most of our students
live very comfortable
lives,” said Ms. Mary
Kay Fitzpatrick,
Vianney’s Director of
Campus Ministry. “It’s OK for them to feel
what it’s like to be cold, to wake up cold. We
hope it gives them more empathy for people
who live that reality,”

A Critical Link for Vianney Freshmen
Being a high school freshman can be a
daunting assignment. New faces, new
demands, new schedules, new enticements
and new conflicts all roll into those first few
weeks of school.
Vianney recognizes how tough being a freshman
is for many students, and so we have a strategic
means of helping these young Griffins make
a great transition to high school. We call it:
Link Crew.
Vianney’s Link Crew is made up of juniors
and seniors who volunteer to smooth this
transition time for the newest batch of
Griffins. This year, nearly 80 upperclassmen made a commitment to share their
time, knowledge and spirit with our 170
freshmen. Link Crew members must apply
and are selected the previous spring.
They go through a multi-day formal
training process and give up a significant
amount of their own time to be part
of freshman orientation and to lead
“Link Rooms” during the first few
weeks of school.
“Our Link Crew guys volunteer
because they remember their Link Crew
leaders when they were freshmen. Clearly
it made a positive impression on them,
and now they want to return the favor,”
said teacher Mr. Kevin Walsh ’91, the
Link Crew moderator.
In their white “superhero” t-shirts, Link Crew leaders senior Ian
Wohlstadter (left) and junior Mike Mataya lead freshmen including
Michael Babb, Nick Hebenstreit and Brendan Wood on a school
tour. One of the Link Crew leaders’ goals is to ensure the young
Griffins know their way around before school starts.
The Link Crew program has two basic
goals, according to Mr. Walsh. “First,
it ensures that each freshman is connected to some upperclassmen so that
he has built-in mentors. Secondly, it
gives the freshmen a chance to become
connected to a wide variety of their own
Oh yeah, our freshmen feel welcome at Vianney! Link Crew volunteers Joey Lux (back to camera), Quinn Cochran and Andrew
Auer, all seniors, welcome freshman Codie Orberson as he

classmates before school even starts,”
Mr. Walsh said.
And while the freshmen are learning the
ropes at Vianney, their Link Crew leaders are
gaining some valuable leadership skills. “Link
Crew has become a big part of who we are
and how we treat each other at Vianney. It’s a
very positive program for both the freshmen
and the Link Crew leaders,” Mr. Walsh said.
Showing what Vianney spirit looks like, Link Crew members Rob Bieg, Jack O’Brien, Tony Cochran and Tyler Picha, all seniors, welcome and direct freshmen as they arrive for the first day of orientation.

Friendship Forged
at Vianney Leads to
a Legal Alliance
“During our junior year of college, Mick
and I began discussing going to law
school,” Steve said. “And then, throughout
law school we always dreamed of one day
opening our own practice together.”
Andrew “Mick” Henderson ’01 and
Steve Watterkotte ’01 became friends their
freshmen year at Vianney. They had older
brothers who were classmates (Jeff Henderson ’99 and Eric Watterkotte ’99) and they
both loved sports — although Steve played
basketball and baseball and Mick played
football and hockey. As sometimes happens, they just clicked and were fast friends
throughout high school.
The pair took the leap in 2010 and opened
their doors as Henderson & Waterkotte P.C.
Mick focuses mostly on personal injury
and civil litigation cases; Steve practices
almost exclusively in criminal defense.
The two went their separate
ways after graduation. Steve
went to Webster University
and got a BA in English and
Education. Mick started out
at the University of South
Florida, transferred to the
University of Missouri –
St. Louis and got a BS in
business administration.
Yet they kept in touch, hung
out together frequently and
talked about the future.
“Some people may consider it risky to go
into business with a good friend,” Mick
said. “But Steve and I share a lot of the same
enthusiasm and goals. A positive attitude,
trust and the ability to
remain open-minded
allow us to work well
together,” he said.
Ten years later, Steve Waterkotte ’01 (left) and
Mick Henderson ’01 return to the home of their
friendship and business partnership. The pair
remains in contact with favorite Vianney
teachers, and Henderson is a coach of the
Vianney hockey team.
Senior Citizen
Lelis Djona is like many Vianney seniors in a
lot of ways. He likes action movies and hip-hop.
He plays football and basketball. He was on
homecoming court.
Unlike other Vianney seniors, however, Lelis
is a newly minted U.S. citizen. He took his
citizenship oath in September.
Lelis is from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He fled the country with his grandmother in
1998, as Tutsis like Lelis’ family were being
tortured or even killed by the Hutu government. Lelis and his grandmother spent two
years in refugee camps before being given
asylum in the United States.
The milestone of becoming a U.S. citizen is
important to Lelis in a number of ways,
The 2001 Vianney Talon
yearbook notes that Mick
was the senior “most likely
to become a professional
speaker and do commercial voice-overs.” Steve
was voted “most likely to
open a tanning salon.”
Well, at least their friendship was on target.
Senior Scholars
Each year, about 1.5 million high school
juniors at 22,000 high schools across the
country take the Preliminary Scholastic
Aptitude Test (PSAT). Vianney is proud to
have three students who were recognized
this fall for their exceptional performance on
this key test.
Zakary Krekeler was named a National Merit
Scholarship Program Finalist. This means
that Zak scored in the top 1 percent of all
students taking the test. This accomplishment
puts Zak in the running for additional recognition and significant college scholarships.
Josh Giegling and Drew Imhoff were named
Commended students in the National Merit
Scholarship competition. Josh and Drew
scored in the top 5 percent of students in the
country. This designation will also ensure

but perhaps most critical is that he will be
allowed to petition for his mother to come
to the United States. He has been separated
from her since the day Hutu soldiers raided
his neighborhood. In the wake of the turmoil,
she ended up with asylum in Belgium. Lelis
has seen her only a handful of times since.
Vianney was proud to have three seniors recognized for their
performance on the PSAT. “Commended” students included

additional academic scholarship consideration
for these Griffins.
Congratulations to these top-scoring scholars!
There’s a lot more to Lelis’ story. Suffice it to
say that this Vianney senior citizen has traveled a difficult road to get where he is today.
But he’s a U.S. citizen. Maybe his mother
will be able to come here soon. And for now,
Lelis is among good friends at Vianney, just
being another Griffin.

It was wedding bells in
September for Tim Goede. He
married Bishop DuBourg grad
Jamie Diaz at St. Martin of Tours. Goede
is President of Personalized Management
Associates, an executive recruiting firm.
70
Daniel Schou is president of Source Medical,
a nationwide physician search firm based in
Creve Coeur. Schou has been with the firm
for six years. When he became president in
2009, he was the youngest in the firm’s 40year history.
It’s about more than a smile.
Dr. Mark Ortinau spent part
of June and September as a
volunteer in Kosovo, providing free dental
care through an organization called Service
International.

Griffins roar in all kinds of
ways. Stephen Kellar recently
was elected director of the
American Legion Riders, Post 166, in Goose
Creek, S.C. The organization is made up of
motorcycle riders who support state and local
veterans and service members by sponsoring
charitable motorcycle events.
Soccer Made in St. Louis is the
title of a new book by Dave
Lange. According to the CEO &
Secretary General of US Soccer, the colorful
book “takes soccer fans on a fantastic journey
that educates and also entertains.” The book
includes a section on high school soccer with
a mention of Vianney’s own legendary coach,
Mike Villa. Find out more about the book at

was being wrangled by Greg Hanson. Hanson
caught the ballooning bug in the 1980s when
he saw Vianney’s homecoming queen land in
a hot air balloon on the 50-yard line. Hanson
now runs Balloon Port of St. Louis.

Sometimes, being on the sidelines
is a dream come true. Ben
Krueger is back at Lindenwood
University now, but he spent the summer
as an athletic training intern with the
Washington Redskins at their training camp
in Ashburn, Va. When he was at Vianney,
Krueger worked alongside former trainer
Doug Hepburn for the varsity Griffins.
20
Ben Purk, a senior at Lasell College in
Boston, is currently interning with the
Providence Bruins. The Bruins are an
American Hockey League team.
09
Tyler Immethun just passed
his real estate exam and is
now a licensed real estate agent
with Keller Williams Realty. He reports that
he would be happy to assist you with buying
or selling your home.

Farewell to Brownhurst
A landmark of the Vianney campus, the
“Brownhurst” mansion, was razed this fall.
The mansion was built by Daniel Sydney
Brown around 1882. Brown was heir to
Pioneer Cooperage and was also a skilled
horticulturalist. The Brown estate included
140 acres, with greenhouses, orchards and a
wide variety of native and exotic trees.
The mansion served as a family home for only
one generation, however. Brown sold the
property to the Society of Mary (Marianists)
in 1919. For about two decades, the Marianists
used the Brown home for a novitiate, where
young men would take a year of religious
training before professing their initial vows.
From 1948 to 1988, Brownhurst housed Catholic
Authors Press, a distribution operation for Catholic
textbooks and reference
materials. One man, Bro.
George Schuster, S.M.,
presided over the operation
and lived by himself in the
building. Bro. Schuster was
confined to a wheelchair
and being able to live and
work in one space suited
his preferences.
From 1989 to the present, Brownhurst remained
vacant. At least three attempts — from the
early 1990s through 2007 — had been made
to “save Brownhurst.” But ultimately, each
attempt was abandoned because of the high
costs of renovation and the building’s lack of

suitability for any logical, long-term use.
As owners of the
Vianney property, the
Marianists had offered
publicly to donate the
structure to any group
or individual willing
to move it off Vianney’s
campus, but there were no takers. Neither
Vianney nor the Marianists considered it
acceptable to have an outside entity operating
out of the structure on campus.
A Brownhurst Mystery
While Brownhurst was never officially used by Vianney, it served at least one sneaky
purpose. During the early 1980s, from a window high in Brownhurst, teacher John
Burcke would keep an eye out for students who parked illicitly in the Lutheran Center
parking lot. He would telephone Dean of Students Bro. Len Rudy, S.M., in the school
office. When the scofflaws entered school, a reproachful Bro. Rudy would be waiting
and would march them back out to move their cars. The guilty boys never figured out
how they got caught.
8
“I wish we had been able to save the building,
but in reality, Vianney has to focus on our
mission of educating young men,” said Vianney President Mr. Mike Loyet ’77. “If we or
the Marianists had the $2 million or more
Brownhurst would have required, we certainly couldn’t justify spending it on rehabbing
an old building. Our investments have to be
in meeting the more pressing educational
needs of our students,” Mr. Loyet said.
The building site, which adjoins the Marianist
cemetery, will be converted to green space.
Thanks to Fr. Joe Uvietta, S.M., and Bro. Len
Rudy, S.M., for their assistance with historical
information.
St. John Vianney High School is dedicated to forming young men for spiritual,
academic and personal excellence in the Catholic, Marianist tradition.
Spirit of Family
The
ANNUAL
REPORT
2010-2011
One of the characteristics of Marianist education is “To educate
in the family spirit.” At Vianney, we believe very strongly in the
importance of family. And it’s clear that our “family” believes
strongly in Vianney.
This Annual Report is a small way we thank the generous members
of the Vianney family who gave of their time and treasure to
ensure a strong, Catholic, Marianist education for more than 600
boys in the fiscal year 2010-2011.
We are grateful for the very generous support of the Vianney family.
You make it all possible!
Members of the class of 2014, including
Eric Biras, Brandon Elder, Ryan Walsh,
Blake Strebler and Zach Lauer await the
start of the homecoming game in 2010.

Determined Griffins
Take Demanding Classes
Each year, nearly half of Vianney juniors and seniors take Honors, Advanced
College Credit (ACC), Advanced Placement (AP) or Dual-Enrollment classes
at Vianney. These classes help gear up Griffins for the rigors of college, and in
many cases earn students college credit.
In the 2010-2011 school year, Vianney introduced the Dual-Enrollment program, which is offered in cooperation with St. Louis Community College at
Meramec. Seniors who met certain requirements had the opportunity to take
classes on site at Meramec for both Vianney and college credit.
In Advanced Placement Chemistry class, then-junior Andy Dytuco uses a pipette to transfer solution to a
test tube. Because of their challenging nature, classes like this one are worth an additional one-half point
on the grade scale.

Mission Work with a Reggae Beat
A Caribbean island may sound like a perfect vacation escape, but for 17 Griffins
last summer, it was all about work.
A troop of students, one alumnus and three adult volunteers spent eight days in
Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on a mission trip with groups from other high schools across
the country. The work — in 100-degree heat — included repairing fences and homes,
and mixing concrete by hand to pour a foundation for a community center.
The trip was coordinated by Vianney Chaplain Fr. Tim Kenney, S.M., through an
organization called Catholic Heart Work Camp.

Then-juniors Denny Moore and Joey Vander Pluym add to the Toys for Tots collection jar with the encouragement of teacher Mr. Charlie Walsh and alumnus and local radio personality Mr. Mark Klose ’71.
A Tradition of Griffin Generosity
You know Christmas is coming when the Toys for Tots drive canisters are
making the rounds in the Griffins’ Café. Last year, Vianney students donated
a cool $7,300 during just four days of lunchtime collections. Competition
between classes helped spark the success of the drive, which is sponsored by
the Lettermen’s Club.
With the proceeds from the collection, Griffins were able to purchase 1,191 toys
for donation to the Salvation Army’s annual toy drive.

Have You Remembered Vianney In Your Will?
By remembering St. John Vianney
High School in your will, you can
influence the lives of young men in
a beautiful and profound way.
Then-sophomore James Cocroft hands a softball to his Special School
District buddy, while then-junior Tim Tresslar waits to record her throw.
James and Tim were among roughly 200 Griffins who stepped up to make
it a gold-medal day for the Olympians.
A bequest is one of the simplest ways
to provide for Vianney’s future, and it
can take many forms. For example, you
may arrange for Vianney to receive:
• A specific dollar amount.
• Specified assets, such as securities,
real estate or tangible property.
• All or a percentage of the remainder
of your estate after any obligations
have been met.
You may make a bequest to Vianney
by preparing a new will or adding a
codicil to your present will.
An outright bequest to Vianney is fully
tax-deductible for estate-tax purposes.
The gift of Catholic education at Vianney is a significant way your dreams
and beliefs can live on even after you
are gone. Please discuss this opportunity with your family and consult your
attorney or financial adviser for more
informaation.
Warm Spirits at
Soggy Special Olympics
The day was cool and damp, but spirits were bright for
Vianney’s ninth annual hosting of Special Olympics in
May. The Griffins welcomed about 110 athletes from
the St. Louis Special School District for the track and
field competition.
In all, nearly 200 Vianney student volunteers worked
to make the day fun and truly special for our guests.
