Top elementary and secondary teachers,
support personnel of the year named
Three SVHS students headed to FCCLA
Nationals in California
Comal Education Foundation, GVTC honor employees with gifts
Sarah Culpepper, a kindergarten teacher at Rahe
Bulverde Elementary, was named the 2011 Comal ISD
Elementary Teacher of the Year. She is pictured, at
right, with Paula White, GVTC public relations director, and Carlene Comer, Comal Education Foundation
board president.
Paula White, GVTC public relations director, and
Carlene Comer, Comal Education Foundation board
president, congratulate Kevin Howell who was named
the 2011 Comal ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Terre Sawey, a transportation dispatcher at the
Smithson Valley Middle School “hub” was one of two
recipients of the district’s 2011 Support Personnel of
the Year. She is pictured, right, with Paula White,
GVTC public relations director, and Carlene Comer,
Comal Education Foundation board president.
Paula White, GVTC public relations director, and
Carlene Comer, Comal Education Foundation board
president, pose with Kelly Yoe, an educational assistant at Garden Ridge Elementary, who also received
the 2011 Support Personnel of the Year distinction.
Sarah Culpepper, a kindergarten teacher in
her fourth year at Rahe Bulverde Elementary
School, and Kevin Howell, a language arts
teacher at the Comal Discipline Center, have
been named 2011 Comal ISD Elementary
and Secondary Teacher of the Year.
They will now advance to regionals in
the Texas Education Agency’s Teacher of
the Year program.
After a stint in Bejing, teaching English
as a Second Language, Culpepper returned
to the school she attended as a child: Rahe
Bulverde.
One of her lessons to her students is the
importance of caring for one another. In
saying that, she believes she is “morally
obliged to do the same.” Culpepper has
spent the past eight summers volunteering
in orphanages and refugee camps throughout the world.
“I believe that every word I say has the
potential to be eternal,” she said. “My relationship with students revolves around my
placing trust in them and they in turn place
their trust in me.”
For Kevin Howell, we all have a craving
for knowledge that has been “exponentially
fueled through the explosion of resources
and availability,” specifically the World
Wide Web.
So, keeping up with the technological
times, plus a panache for pop culture helps
Kevin maintain credibility with the students.
“If you can put aside these preconceptions and prejudices and remember this, you
will find that your life becomes much easier, as students will become more eager to
share with you and give you their best
effort,” he said.
Kelly Yoe, an educational assistant at
Garden Ridge Elementary School, and
Terre Sawey, a transportation dispatcher at
the Smithson Valley Middle School “hub,”
won the district’s 2011 Support Personnel
of the Year.
GVTC, a long-time supporter and sponsor
of Comal ISD, was proud to attend the appreciation banquet, and generously donated
$2,000 in gift cards to the top teachers and
support personnel once again this year. Public
Relations director Paula White was on hand to
make the presentations.
Carlene Comer, president of the Comal
Education Foundation board, also attended
the banquet to recognize district employees
and present $250 checks from the
Foundation to this year’s honorees.
Some 400 employees and members of
their families were lauded at the annual
employee appreciation banquet. Forty
retirees, representing more than 1,000 years
of service, were recognized and employees
were given 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30-year
service pins.
All of this year’s nominated teachers and
support personnel are pictured on the back
cover of this issue of SchooLife.
Smithson Valley High School FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) students competed in Houston at the State STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) competition in April.

The Canyon High School Air Force Junior ROTC unit has been selected as one of 200 out of 849 nationwide
and overseas to earn the 2010-2011 Air Force Junior ROTC Distinguished Unit Award with Merit.
This award recognizes Air Force Junior ROTC units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations, and that have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while
meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of producing better citizens for America.
This is the second time in the school’s history that CHS has earned the Distinguished Unit Award with Merit.
“We are proud of our cadets. During the annual inspection, our Corps received the highest rating of Exceeds
the Standards in all categories,” said Kevin Cregier, CHS JROTC instructor. “I am proud of our cadets, the support I get from fellow JROTC instructor Edward Garcia, and the administration. This has been a banner year for
Canyon High JROTC.”
The objectives of the Junior ROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life
skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character, and self-discipline through character education, and to provide instruction in air and space fundamentals. Enrollment is open to all young people who are in
the 9th grade or higher, physically fit, and are citizens or nationals of the United States.
Air Force Junior ROTC is located in 884 high schools across the United States and at selected schools in
Europe, in the Pacific and Puerto Rico. Junior ROTC enrollment includes more than 117,000 cadets.

SVHS student Dominguez is offered nearly
$1 million in scholarships
Smithson Valley High principal John
Montelongo said it all when he announced
over the school’s public address system just
how proud he was of one of his senior student’s accomplishments.
“We have a student who has started the
million dollar club at Smithson Valley High
School,” Montelongo said. “His name is
Rick Dominguez.”
Dominguez, named a National Hispanic
Scholar last fall, was offered nearly $1 million
in scholarships from schools around the
nation—$930,076 to be exact.
He had offers from Auburn University and
the University of Arizona totaling more than
$200,000, an offer from the Rochester Institute
of Technology, Arizona State University and St.
Mary’s University totaling another $215,000,

career advisor. “It’s very rare to see a student
have nearly $1 million worth of offers.”
Dominguez decided to accept a full-ride scholarship to Alma College in Michigan. It’s a private
school with an enrollment of just over 1,400. The scholarship offer to Alma College is worth $153,980.
“I loved the fact that Alma College is a place I’m not going to get into classes jam packed with
100 students,” said Dominguez, who plans on majoring in psychology. “They have a very personal
educational style and an incredible graduation rate.”
SVHS senior counselor Amanda Pedroza has worked with Dominguez and his parents Richard
Dominguez and Cynthia Medina this school year during the college selection process.
“I was awed and speechless when I saw the total,” Pedroza said. “It’s a perfect reflection of the
kind of student Rick is.”
Montelongo was proud of the fact so many fellow SVHS students were congratulating
Dominguez after the announcement.
“He’s a role model for others to follow,” Montelongo said. “Right now, he has 20 percent of the
scholarship offers of our entire student body. Without a doubt I’m going to keep an eye on the bright
future this student has. I know I’m going to hear about him accomplishing great things.”

From the Superintendent
As you can see in the
pages of this month’s
SchooLife, we have a great
deal to be proud of in
Comal ISD.
Our campus Teachers
of the Year represent a
group of professionals
who place their students
first and who bring creative, innovative and
effective methods of
Dr. Marc
teaching to the classroom
every day. Sarah Culpepper, the 2011
Comal ISD Elementary Teacher of the
Year, returned to Rahe Bulverde
Elementary School four years ago to
bring some of her magic to the kindergarten students. I say “return” because
Sarah attended Rahe Bulverde as a
child. Kevin Howell, the 2011 Comal
ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year,
believes that his panache for pop culture
and his attention to the latest technology
keeps his students at Comal Discipline
Center engaged and ultimately learning.
Our Support Personnel of the Year
finalists represent a diversity of responsibilities but a common strength: they are
vital to the operation of their campuses
and departments. Kelly Yoe, educational
assistant at Garden Ridge Elementary
School is the 2011 Comal ISD Campus
Support Personnel of the
Year and Terre Sawey, bus
dispatcher at the Smithson
Valley Middle School hub,
is the 2011 Comal ISD
Support Services Personnel
of the Year.
Just as powerful, this is
the season of student
recognition. Our high
school students have
excelled in regional, state
Walker
and national competition in
academics, athletics and extra-curricular
activities. These achievers number in
the hundreds, while the number of graduates at our three comprehensive high
schools exceeds 1,000.
Granted, this past spring has been
quite a challenge with the dismal budget
news coming out of Austin on a regular
basis. However, I take heart when I witness all of the successes and achievements of our students and staff.
To the Class of 2011:
Congratulations and Best Wishes! Come
back and visit your teachers from time
to time and let them know what a difference they made in your lives.
To the returning students and community: Have a safe and wonderful
summer and we’ll see you in August!

DISTRICT NEWS BRIEFS
District draws $2,000 grant
Comal ISD has been awarded a loss prevention grant of $2,000 from the Texas Association of School Boards
(TASB) Risk Management Fund. Grant monies help implement loss prevention and safety initiatives to raise awareness of safety issues and reduce the potential for property losses and on-the-job injuries.
This award is part of $550,000 in grants awarded to 211 Texas school districts. Since 1998, the Loss Prevention
Grant Program has distributed 1,992 total grants of more than $5 million in workers’ compensation and property/liability programs.
The grants focus on fall prevention, personal lifting devices and personal protective equipment. Facilities security initiatives, driver improvement, and vehicle safety were the primary areas receiving grants under the property/liability program.
Community professionals participate in student discussion
Professionals from throughout the Comal ISD community were involved in the springtime discussion of intercourse and other risky behaviors in middle school and high school classrooms.
The curriculum, called “Worth the Wait,” a product of Scott & White, was recommended by the district’s Student
Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), approved by the school board and is taught in the biology classes at the high
schools. As part of the district’s comprehensive effort in informing students about making healthy life decisions, area
physicians, representatives from the Comal County District Attorney’s Office, Child Advocacy Center and Options
for Women speak to students.
“This is an amazing group of professionals who are giving free of their time to talk to students about healthy decisions,” said Suzie Dionne of Options for Women and a member of the Comal ISD SHAC.
This year’s speakers bureau included: Physicians Michael Mann, Dorothy Overman, Beverly Nuckols, Steve
Ousley, Brian Stigall, Jason Nelson, Madison Lowry, Vincent Quintero, Bill Davis and Mary Geldernick; Jennifer
Tharp, Shannon Francis, Tiffany Colunga, Jennifer Smith and Nick Robinson of the Comal County District
Attorney’s Office; Sarah Cantu, Susan Landrum, Sharon Hileman and Bridget Kieshchick of the Child Advocacy
Center; and Tom Taylor, Teresa Cathcart, Galyn Burnaman and Dionne of Options for Women, a non-profit, abstinence-based resource council in New Braunfels.
Some of the topics include: “Teens, Sex and the Law,” “Health Risks and STDs,” and “Pregnancy, Abortion and
Adoption” at the high school level; “What Teens Need to Know About STDs” and “Sex and the Law,” for 8th grade
students; “STDs and Other Facts” and “Sexual Offenses” for 7th grade students; and “Pregnancy and STDs” and
“Sexual Abuse” for 6th grade students.
Parent meetings were conducted in evenings throughout April to answer any questions parents may have about the
classroom discussion that took place during May and to offer tips for them to open the discussion at home about
healthy decisions.
School board approves food service bid
The Comal ISD Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to renew the contract to Chartwells as the district’s food
service manager. Nineteen bids were solicited, two were submitted and Chartwells was selected as the best bid.
In other business during the less-than-30-minute April regular meeting, the school board approved out-of-town
travel for three Smithson Valley High School Family Career and Community Leaders of America students to travel to
Anaheim, Calif., to participate in the national leadership conference, and one Canyon High School student to travel to
Washington, D.C. to attend the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference.
Community Ed Summer Camps announced

Foundation banquet honors graduates, alumni
Two alumni were honored with the prestigious 2011 Comal ISD Outstanding Graduate Award
during the Comal Education Foundation’s annual academic recognition banquet on May 17. Called
the Jan Heckendorn Academic Recognition Banquet in honor of one of the Foundation’s founding
members, the banquet also honors the top students at each of the district’s three comprehensive high
schools. The event was at the McKenna Events Center.
Outstanding Graduates are nominated by members of the community to recognize Comal ISD
alumni for excellence and notable achievements since graduating. This is the 13th year of the program. Each recipient receives a specially designed acrylic award. A photo plaque of each honoree
will hang on each of the school’s Wall of Honor.

high priority for Jillian and her husband, Brandon (also a graduate of SVHS), who are proud parents of
Branson and Aubrie. At Smithson Valley High, she graduated 7th in her class and was a member of the
National Honor Society. She was awarded the Mitte Circle of Excellence Award twice for academic performance and community service during her time at Texas State University, where she earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree.
Forty-five seniors at Canyon High School, Canyon Lake High School and Smithson Valley High
Schools, their families and the one teacher who has made the greatest difference in their lives were
also honored at the banquet. Portraits of each of the students and his/her special teacher, provided
by Sam Roberts Photography of Bulverde, were included in the evening’s program. Wells Fargo
was Presenting Sponsor of the event.
The banquet is named after Mrs. Heckendorn, who was instrumental in the founding and creation of the Comal Education Foundation. She was a driving force behind the Foundation’s longstanding academic recognition banquet. In addition, the Heckendorn family awards two scholarships
each year to graduates of Smithson Valley High School.

Freedom Pen Project at MVMS
Tech Ed II students at Mountain Valley Middle School participated in the “Freedom Pen Project”
by completing 22 slimline pens out of Rosewood and Padauk. The freedom pen project was created
by the Saw Mill Creek Woodworker’s Forum to provide hand-made pens for our military personnel
stationed in foreign countries.
The goal of the project is for every freedom pen to serve as a reminder to our troops that they are
not alone and that they have our continuing support. The pen kits and materials were donated by
Penn State Industries. Thanks to Bridgett at Freedom Mail in Sattler for shipping the completed pens
back to Penn State free of charge.
This has been a big hit with eighth-grade students, knowing they are bringing a smile to those of
our military that have been deployed. Most of the students that participated are pictured here from

Can science be fun or scary? Try both! Mrs. Dominguez’s classes at Mountain Valley Middle had
the opportunity to construct paper skeletons. We learned that the skeleton has five major functions
and four types of joints and other awesome facts. Rufus, our model skeleton, has been helping the
middle school’s science department for a few years and we have really enjoyed “his” help! This was
a fun and new way to learn about the skeletal system. Pictured here is Lauren Dominguez’s 6th period class and Rufus.

• If the player meets the above criterion, they
will achieve some measure of Academic AllState recognition.
• Whether the player is on the Elite Team, 1st

SVHS Tech Showcase draws hundreds as
students display incredible technology
Blanco National Bank to carry the LendRIGHT
Mortgage Industry Seal of Excellence
By Jason Gordon
Comal ISD Communications Dept.
Blanco National Bank announced recently
that it carries the new LendRIGHT™ seal of
excellence for the mortgage industry.
The LendRIGHT program is designed to
allow consumers to easily recognize lenders who
are committed to providing a premium level of
service, expertise and ethics in their community.
The LendRIGHT mark will indicate to consumers that participating members of the
Lenders One™ mortgage cooperative have
pledged to pursue operational integrity and customer service excellence.
“We are proud to carry the LendRIGHT
seal,” said Neal Brodbeck, Mortgage Banking
VP of Blanco National Bank’s Spring Branch
office. “Borrowers can be confident that when
they select Blanco Bank for home financing, we
are committed to maintaining the utmost standards in education, training, compliance, fiscal
responsibility and service.”
Before receiving the LendRIGHT designation, Blanco National Bank made a pledge to
maintain their pursuit of excellence in lending
by fulfilling the qualities defined in the acronym
representing the “RIGHT” in LendRIGHT,
which indicates a firm belief in a process built
around the consumer, which includes:
Tonya Washington knows exactly what to tell her
son when he asks to play on the family’s iPad thanks
to the Comal ISD Technology Showcase she attended
at Smithson Valley High on May 4.
Washington’s son Justin, a 4th grader at Specht
Elementary, loves to play video games the same way
many kids of his generation do – but students in
Comal ISD are learning the technology can be used for
so much more than playing popular games like Angry
Birds or Farmville.
Washington watched a particular display at the
Technology Showcase where 5th-grade student
Chancelor McKee showed her about a popular 50 State
app that helps students learn where the states are located. Other apps that were featured were Art Studio,
where students can create personalized works of art,
The Elements, which teaches about the periodic table,
and Google Earth.
“It was incredible to see things I can use at home,”
Washington said. “We’re always trying to think about
things our son can do in his spare time other than play
video games. Now I can tell him he can use the iPad if
he uses one of these apps. He can have fun and learn at
the same time.”
Students in all grades, K-12, in the Smithson
Valley High feeder pattern proudly displayed technology projects they’ve been working on all school year to
more than 1,000 parents and community members.
Students created documentaries with MacBooks
portraying different topics from the Battle of the
Alamo (4th graders at Bill Brown Elementary) to
Animal Interviews (3rd grade students at Arlon Seay
Elementary) to Telling the Story of the LBJ Era
(Smithson Valley High students) using iMovie.
Other projects showcased included a book club
blog (Spring Branch Middle), Math Vocabulary Made
COOL! (Rahe Bulverde Elementary), and Science
Soars with Tech Tools (Arlon Seay Elementary).
Cassidy Wilson, a 4th grade student at Bill Brown
Elementary, said she had so much fun preparing for the
Technology Showcase.
“It’s a lot better than having to write a paper,”
Wilson said. “With an iMovie or in Comic Life, you
get to express yourself in so many ways. You get to be
a pirate or an important person in history instead of
writing about it. Plus, it’s usually a group effort where
everyone is sharing ideas, which is pretty cool.”
BBES teacher Maureen Alaniva said Comal ISD
is putting its bond dollars to good use with all this
great technology.
“I think this showcase is a great way for parents
and community members to see how we’re using our
bond money,” Alaniva said. “The kids absolutely love
it. We brought five projects we worked on this year,
but we easily could have brought 10.”
Smithson Valley High teacher Chris Nisley
summed up what technology in Comal ISD means.
“I’ve had numerous students write back to me after
they’ve gone on to college and told me how far ahead
they are because of what they learned here,” Nisley
said. “When they graduate from college, they’ve written back and told me about the really great jobs they
got. It makes me really proud of what we’re doing.”
Comal ISD executive director of technology Sandra
Shelton was impressed with everything the district’s
teachers and students have accomplished this year.
“Our goal is to show the way parents can utilize
the instructional aspects of technology so their students
can use them at home for educational purposes,” said
Shelton. “I’m so proud of not only students but also
our teachers and the way they have embraced technology. They are going above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of our kids.”
As a great bonus for attending the showcase,
incredible door prizes were given away. LCD HDTV,
iPad 2, Nintendo DS, eReader, iPod touch, and camcorders were among the many items up for grabs.

“We are determined to provide our home
finance consumers with an experience focused
around service and integrity,” Brodbeck added.
“Now is the time to demonstrate that there are
lenders who care about doing business the right
way, and the LendRIGHT designation helps us
to do that.”

based just north of San Antonio. The foundation makes contributions to an array of
nonprofit organizations throughout GVTC’s
service area, which includes a 2,000 square
mile territory that covers Boerne, Bulverde,
Canyon Lake and Gonzales. Since being
established in 2006, The GVTC Foundation
has donated more than half a million dollars
to the community.
Many of the sponsors have supported The
Golf Classic, since it was established in 2005.
This year, new sponsorship categories were
