RUN TO WIN:
BROMMA MARATHON™ YARD SPREADERS
There is a simple reason why terminals choose
Bromma yard crane spreaders: they perform better.
Bromma’s family of dedicated, purpose-built yard
spreaders are high-productivity, low-downtime, lowmaintenance, long-distance runners – spreaders that
deliver an excellent return on investment. The product
family we call Bromma Marathon™ performs reliably,
day after day, year after year, in some of the most
demanding terminals in the world. It’s this kind of
performance, proven worldwide over many years, that
has made Bromma the industry’s first name in yard
crane spreaders.
Run Cleaner
In recent years environmental concerns have taken on
increasing importance at terminals around the world.
By virtually eliminating hydraulics, all-electric Bromma
Marathon™ spreaders offer a clear choice to
environmentally-sensitive terminals. All-electric
spreaders mean no oil leaks, and no oil spills. They
reduce the risk of costly clean-up. By eliminating the
hydraulic power pack, Bromma all-electric spreaders
[available in 40 foot and 45 foot versions] dramatically
lower spreader energy costs. In fact, it’s estimated
that a Bromma all-electric spreader uses just 1/10th of
the annual energy of a hydraulic yard crane spreader.
In addition, Bromma spreaders are strong and light:
all-electric spreaders are often substantially lighter than
the spreaders they replace. This can significantly reduce
the annual crane energy costs as well.
Run Faster
Of course, the greatest “risk factor” when it comes to
environmental impact are diesel emissions – the pollution created by container ships idling at the dock
and trucks idling outside the terminal. Highperformance yard spreaders enable ships to turn round
faster and for trucks to come and go faster.
Bromma Marathon™ spreaders accomplish this
through highly productive twin-lift and separating twinlift spreaders.

The recently redesigned and newly optimized Bromma
Marathon™ twin-lift spreaders include the YTS45
separating twin-lift and the YTR40 regular twin-lift.
The redesigned separating twin-lift spreader features
simplified yard spreader end beams, as well as an
optional Bromma TTDS Twin-Twenty Detection System. Failsafe logic and interlocks also ensure safety.
The separating distance of YTS45 spreaders is 1000mm
under full load and 1.6m under 2x25 t load.
Finally, Bromma’s newly optimized Marathon™
family is feature-rich, including a side shift capability
on both hydraulic and all-electric models. In addition,
our YSX40E and YSX45E single-lift spreaders are
now available with hydraulic flippers. YSX40/45EF
Run Smarter
Bromma MarathonTM yard spreaders go the distance
with more intelligence due to a spreader control and
communications system that is unmatched in this
industry for its versatility and performance. Optional
Bromma SCS2 monitors spreader performance and diagnoses spreader faults. More than 2,000 SCS2 spreader
nodes are in service today on spreaders all over the
world.
SCS2 is also available with Bluetooth® wireless technology,
and a handheld PDA [personal digital assistant], making it possible for service technicians to diagnose a
problem, program a spreader, or trouble-shoot a fault by
cell phone from a distance of 100 meters.
The result? Bromma Marathon™ yard spreaders with
SCS2 eliminate timely and costly service and repair
events. SCS2 reduces the need for spreader changeouts. It speeds up the time for spreader repair. It shortens downtime. It delivers what makes for higher terminal profits: higher MMBF [mean moves between
failure] and lower MTTR [mean time to repair].
In addition, SCS2 prevents downtime events by reducing
electrical connections and minimizing conventional
wiring. [Spreader downtime is the #1 cause of crane
downtime, and electrical problems, at most terminals, are the #1 cause of spreader downtime.] By
delivering specific fault information [monitoring and
recording each individual sensor and switch, instead of
monitoring a fault group], SCS2 ensures rapid data capture and very specific data intelligence. Purpose-designed for the world of container handling, it has the
ruggedness to survive high-impact container handling
and an operating protocol capable of smooth
performance even in “dirty” terminal electrical
environments.
Run Longer
Bromma Marathon™ yard spreaders run longer, since
the YSX40E and YSX45E all-electric units have no
oil, and no oil filter to change, so that service intervals
are lengthened, and service duration is shortened. [Service duration is also lower on these spreaders since
Bromma’s box-beam design offers excellent ease of
access to service technicians.] The ability

of Bromma Marathon™ spreaders to run longer makes them ideal for automated container handling
environments. Further, by lengthening service
intervals, Bromma Marathon™ spreaders ensure lower
lifecycle costs.
Run Tougher
The world of container handling is a rugged one. Only
the toughest equipment survives. As with all Bromma
products, Bromma Marathon™ yard crane spreaders
are built to last. Bromma durability is due in part to
Bromma’s insistence on the use of Swedish steel, which
is renowned for its unique combination of strength,
weldability, and formability. Bromma durability is also
a result of Bromma design. Designing a better spreader
doesn’t necessarily mean designing a more complicated
spreader. Good design emerges from strong design
values. At Bromma these values include easy
accessibility, ease of maintenance, and interchangeable,
standardized spare parts for a reduced spare parts
inventory. Finally, Bromma durability results from stateof-the-art spreader factories in Nordic countries and
Asia, where all major components are jig-built for a
high degree of accuracy. At Bromma quality stability
is one goal among many in our commitment to worldclass manufacturing.
Run With the Best
To win the race, you also need a strong team behind
you. Bromma Marathon™ yard crane spreaders are
backed by the spreader industry’s strongest business
partner. Bromma means strength: financial strength,
staying power, and safety. Bromma means knowledge:
spreaders are our only business, and on a global basis
we have the industry’s most experienced spreader
organization. Bromma means consistency: our “track
record” dates back to 1965. We have always stood
behind our products across their lifecycle, and the people
that have worked closely with Bromma staff are usually
our biggest fans. Bromma means reliability: we are
an honest company with an ethical culture that has a
tradition of stability, quality, professionalism, and trustworthiness. Bromma means resources: our staff of 490
manufactures Well over 1,000 spreaders a year, and
our continuing investment in R&D is the industry’s
highest. Finally, Bromma means global: we are the
spreader business partner best-equipped to meet the
needs of other global organizations.
Run to Win
In the end, what sets Bromma apart from competitors
is a major difference in lifetime value. For terminals
seeking to win — to maximize profits and minimize
downtime, run faster and run cleaner, to run stronger
and run tougher — then you need to run with the best:
the Bromma Marathon™ family of yard crane
spreaders.

Key features
By long experience of spreader design over the years the Bromma engineers have developed a number of
smart and reliable design solutions for the Bromma Yard Crane Spreaders. Some of these solutions come
from the rough environment of ship to shore spreaders. This guarantees that the spreaders withstand hard
treatment with less servicing needs. These design solutions are a big part in the success of Bromma and the
leading market position.
Floating ISO Twistlocks
A well proven construction which
allows for 6 mm of float in all lateral
directions, providing efficient locating
into container corner castings. The
revised twistlock head shape improves
the ability to handle non aligned 20’
containers.
Telescoping system
The chain driven telescopic system,
with shock absorbing blocks of
spring washers and tension
rods, comes directly from
Brommas ship to
shore spreaders.
All electric drive for twistlocks
This service - and power-saving design is both
simple and reliable. An electric motor drives
the twistlock movement via a gearbox and
rods connected to each
twistlock pin.
Twin Boxes
The twin boxes on the YTR40/45
and the YTS45 are identical with
the corresponding ship to shore
models. Now with increased float.
They are better abled to handle
non aligned 20´containers.
Manuals
All Bromma Spreaders come
with extensive technical
manuals containing service
and maintenance instructions.
Available both as hard copies
and on CD.
Box beam design / High
strength steel
The well proven Bromma Box beam design ensures
excellent stability and strength combined with easy
accessibility.
All Bromma spreaders are built
of premium Swedish steel,
selected for its strength,
weldability, and
formability.
Glide plate system
The contact surfaces between the main frame and the
telescoping beams consists of grease lubricated low
friction glide plates. This design
has proven its reliability by
being used on Brommas
ship to shore spreaders
for several years.
SCS2 Spreader Control system
The SCS2 delivers advanced monitoring and diagnostic
information. It also simplifies the spreader
as it eliminates
or minimizes
junction boxes,
terminal strips,
relays and DIN
rails. The CANopen field bus (optional) decreases cabling
still more.
Electrical Cabinet
A common downtime reason is connection failures
caused by repetitive impact between the spreader
and the containers. The electrical cabinets are mounted
with specially designed
shock absorbers,
identical to the ship to
shore spreaders. This
together with the
enclosure IP55 ensures
many untroubled....
working hours.

YSX40E / YSX45E All Electric
Twistlock motion achieved by an electric
motor placed inside the end beam.
The BROMMA YSX40E /YSX45E are all electric mid
range yard crane spreaders calculated for 2 million
cycles. Rectangular frame design enabling easy
location on containers. The electrical components and
the cable chain system are well protected inside the
main frame. The telescopic drive system consists of
an electrical motor and a reduction gearbox connected
to an endless chain system, which is fitted with a block
of springs to absorb shock loads. This enables handling of slightly damaged containers. The system is
durable, strong, stops accurately in all positions, has
low weight, is easy to maintain and has long service
intervals.
A silent and priceworthy alternative for most
applications. A clear choice to environmentallysensitive terminals.

All Electric Side Shift
This module is intended to be an integrated part of
the all electric spreader YSX40E. It makes possible
for the crane driver to move the spreader longitudially
up to 300 mm in both directions without using the
crane gantry function. A 3 kW electric motor and
gearbox placed on top of the spreader drives the side
shift frame using a chain transmission.
Hydraulic Side Shift
This hydraulic module is intended to be an integrated
part of Bromma Yard Crane Spreaders equipped with
hydraulic powerpack such as YSX40/45, YTR40/45
and YTS45. It makes possible for the crane driver to
move the spreader longitudially up to 300 mm in both
directions without using the crane gantry function. A
hydraulic cylinder moves the side shift frame.
13
LED Indicator lamps
HIS
The LED indicator lamps indicate that the spreader
has landed on a container, that the twistlocks are open
and that the twistlocks are locked.
The LED design extends the lifetime of the lamp system considerably and at the same time increases the
visibility in daylight. With the LED lamps
durability they can be mounted without dampers directly on the main frame.
The HIS height indication system measures the
distance between the spreader and the container, and
sends a signal to the crane to decelerate, this ensuring
that the crane operator does not land hard on the
container. The system is specially valuable when it is
difficult to judge the spreader’s distance from the top
of the container. HIS assists the crane operator to approach the container at a
suitable speed, while at the
same time enabling the crane
driver to limit hard impacts.
.
TTDS
The Bromma TTDS will detect the existence of two
20’ containers and avoid a lift in single lift mode. An
unsafe twin twenty lift will lock the outer ends of the
containers onto the spreader while the ends at the center
will not be lifted. The TTDS unit is based on seven
sensors.
Guide Arms
The bolted sideguides can be
replaced with manually retractable
guide arms equipped with a smart
and simple damping system
which extends their service life
and reduces damage.
Bluetooth®service kit
SCS2 Gateway
The SCS2 Gateway is a link
between the crane PLC and
the spreader. This allows a
two wire communication in
the crane cable and a field
bus interface directly to the
crane PLC.
With this device installed with an
SCS2 node on the spreader, service
personnel can have full access and
control over the Spreader within a
>100 m range. This is irrespective
of any obstructions in between.
