appointment of
Todd K. Slisher as the
new Executive Director
of Buick Automotive
Gallery, Longway Planetarium, and Sloan
Museum (Sloan Longway) effective
April 16, 2014. He will replace Tim
Shickles who retired as Executive Director
in January 2014.
In a ten-year career with the Detroit Science
Center, Todd held several key positions.
He has also managed planetariums in
Memphis, Tennessee and Columbia,
South Carolina. Todd holds Bachelor’s
degrees in Astronomy and Physics from
the University of Michigan and is
pursuing a Master’s degree in Public
Administration from Wayne State
University.
Todd brings to Sloan Longway and the
FCCC a wealth of relevant experience in
growing and managing science centers
and history museums. The search
committee is excited about the energy he
brings to them, and they believe in a very
short period of time the community will
share their enthusiastic endorsement.
He is very pleased to be joining the team
at Sloan Longway, and looks forward to
working with the Flint Cultural Center
Corporation Board and with the staff at
these wonderful facilities that serve
important cultural and educational needs

New Century Chorale 20th Season Celebration
New Century Chorale is a community choir
made up of about 50 singers. NCC
rehearses on Mondays from 7:00 p.m. till
9:00 p.m., beginning the first Monday after
Labor Day and continuing through the final
concert in May.
This year they are celebrating by singing
favorite music from the past 20 years as
well as new music. They are also asking
alumni of NCC to join them to sing a few
songs. Stay for their reception and silent
auction after the performance.
Their 20th Season Celebration concert will
be held on May 4th at 4:00 pm.
Performances are at St. Christopher
Episcopal Church in Grand Blanc.

Severance Payments are
Taxable Wages for FICA
Purposes
The U.S. Supreme Court decided
March 25, 2014, that severance
payments are wages for FICA tax
purposes, reversing decisions of the
Federal District Court for the Western
District of Michigan and the U.S. Court
of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in
United States v. Quality Stores, Inc. As
a result of the Supreme Court’s
decision, there will be no refunds of
FICA taxes withheld on severance
payments. Many taxpayers had filed
protective refund claims for prior
withholdings pending the final decision
in the Quality Stores case. It is
anticipated that the IRS will issue
rejection notices with respect to these
protective claims for refund in the near

Liberty Tax Raises Money for The Food Bank
Liberty Tax
Service of Burton
partnered with
the Food Bank of
Eastern Michigan
to help change
the face of
hunger this tax season. Coupons for their
Send-A-Friend program were distributed
starting in February, and March, Liberty
joined forces with the Michigan Warriors
in an effort to raise awareness and money
to help the Food Bank re-stock their
shelves.
Vendors were on hand with their wares
and attendees got the chance to get into a
money machine to win prizes for their
donation. So far, Liberty has raised over
$750 which equates to 4,500 meals.
Liberty is planning on continuing efforts
in the future to give back to the
community whenever possible. In
addition to working with the Food Bank,
Liberty has been working with the
Old Newsboys.
Joe Graves and Ken Thomas Running for 51st District
