Is North Texas Horse Country the Right Place for You?

If you travel up I-35N from the Dallas/ Fort Worth Metroplex about
40 miles and then a little Northeast on Hwy 377, from Denton you
will discover Pilot Point. On the original Butterfield stage route, this
“Texas Main Street Town” was first platted in 1853. It is the oldest
town in Denton County. Pilot Point has a unique geographical
location. It is bounded by state parks and Lake Ray Roberts. This
tends to inhibit urban sprawl. The town is within 45 minutes of
D/FW International airport, major urban shopping, professional/
university sporting events and cultural events. I found in talking to
some of the town’s leaders that the local government is committed
to preserving the town’s heritage. The historic town square and
other turn of the century buildings (Bloomfield Schoolhouse-1883) have been restored and revitalized.
Many of these buildings are listed with the National Registry of Historic Places. See the old Farmer’s and
Merchants bank which was robbed by Bonnie and Clyde.
This North Texas area represents one of the largest concentrations
of horse farms in the United States. The gentle rolling hills,
sandy loam moderate climate and lack of a state income tax have
all helped to attract many horse breeders, trainers and horse
enthusiasts from around the world. The area is home to many
regional, national and world champions. Ranches specializing
in cutting, roping, halter and other areas abound. There are 89
equestrian facilities listed in the yellow pages for horse rental,
tack and riding lessons in the Pilot Point area.
