Spotlight Walking Tour:
Art Deco and Decadence
Thursday, July 14, 6:30 P.M., $25, $20 members
Travel back to the late 1920s and early 1930s
with professional guide Wendy Bright.
Discover how hot jazz and secret speakeasies
kept nightlife ablaze despite Prohibition and
coincided with the emergence of Art Deco.
During this time, CHM expanded from
a research institution to a public museum
and built a new home in Lincoln Park. Tour
runs 2.5 hours with approximately 1.5 miles of
walking. Meet at the Hampton Inn, 68 East
Wacker Place.

celebrate 160 years of compiling, collecting, and celebrating Chicago stories! These four new specially crafted
tours are inspired by our anniversary. Unless otherwise noted, ticket prices do not include food or beverages.
Trolley Tour: Weird and Windy
Sunday, July 10, 1:00 P.M., $40, $30 members
After 160 years, we’ve learned some pretty
quirky things about our city. Led by author
Paul Durica, this tour reveals ten of the
stranger sites and stories from Chicago
history, including the International Museum
of Surgical Science and the site of the Dill
Pickle Club. Tour concludes at a local tavern
(first beer is on us!). Tour lasts 2.5 to 3 hours.
Meet at the Chicago History Museum.
Trolley Tour: Sweet Home Chicago
Saturday, July 30, 1:00 P.M., $40, $30 members
Get a taste of the city’s sweet side on
this confectionary adventure! Historian
Beth Kimmerle, author of Chocolate: The
Sweet History and Candy: The Sweet History,
shares about popular birthday hot spots and
Chicago anniversary traditions. Stops include
Margie’s Candies, the Palmer House Hotel,
and Pops for Champagne. Tour lasts about
3 hours with 3 to 4 stops. Meet at the Chicago
History Museum.
Running Tour: We Didn’t Start the Fire
Saturday, August 13, 9:30 A.M.
$15, $10 members
Led by Museum educator Ani Schmidt, this
tour starts at CHM’s original location. Learn
about “fireproof ” buildings that burned in
the Great Fire and the few structures that
survived. Stops include the iconic Water
Tower and the Bellinger Cottage. Follow the
path of the fire north to Old Town, where the
tour concludes at a local tavern. Tour covers
approximately 4 miles with stops along the way.
Meet at the SE corner of Dearborn and Ontario.
Saturday, July 16, 1:00 P.M., $55, $45 members
Michael H. Ebner, author and professor emeritus of history at Lake Forest College,
leads this bus and walking tour of several distinctive Chicago neighborhoods—
Bridgeport, the Prairie Avenue District, and the Gold Coast. Follow history from the
good to the bleak as you take in opulent mansions and bungalows, stories of famous
families such as the Daleys, and of everyday Chicagoans. Tour runs 3.5 to 4 hours and
includes 3 to 4 stops with multiple walking tours of each neighborhood. Meet at CHM.
BUS TOUR: CHICAGO 101
Saturday, August 27, 1:00 P.M., $55, $45 members
Explore the locales behind the stories in CHM’s iconic exhibition Chicago: Crossroads
of America with professional guide Sharon Sylvester. Visit the site of Fort Dearborn
and locations of historic tragedy and civic unrest. See the places associated with
Chicago innovations such as the modern skyscraper, the 1933 world’s fair, and the
booming commerce industry. Tour runs 3.5 to 4 hours and includes 3 to 4 stops.

Lincoln Park, historically Chicago’s
great place of leisure, is sometimes
compared to an outdoor art and
history museum. Join Krista August,
author of Giants in the Park, on a ride
through this North Side playground
and meet the heroes of our Chicago
forefathers, celebrated in enduring
bronze. While learning the histories
behind local monumental art, get
a glimpse of the moments and
ideals from this great city’s youth.

The men’s magazine that propelled the sexual revolution was first published in Chicago
in 1953. Join Elizabeth Fraterrigo, author of Playboy and the Making of the Good Life
in Modern America, on a tour that highlights Playboy’s story and the lifestyle it evoked.
Examine the company’s humble beginnings, the changes in gender and sexuality it
inspired, and the controversy and criticism it provoked. Stops include the site of the
former Playboy Mansion, the Palmolive Building, and places Hugh Hefner frequented.
Tour runs about 2 hours with 1.5 miles of walking. Meet at the Chicago History Museum.

Based on Erik Larson’s best-selling book,
this tour takes you back to 1893 as you
follow the trails of Daniel Burnham and
the devilish doings of H. H. Holmes. Visit
the historic fairgrounds, the Garden of the
Phoenix, and the site of the famous murder
castle. Tour runs 3.5 to 4 hours and makes
3 to 4 stops along the way. Meet at the
Chicago History Museum.

Explore the historic buildings and back
porches of the North Side on the picturesque
Brown Line. Take in the architecture
of the business district at Armitage and
the German heritage of Lincoln Square.
Tour concludes in Lincoln Square.
Movement of the People June 26, July 24
Discover the story of the Blue Line. Visit
two ever-changing neighborhoods—Pilsen
and Wicker Park—and learn how these
creative hubs have experienced cultural shifts
throughout history. Tour concludes in
Wicker Park.
Man vs. Nature June 19, August 28
As you travel on the Green Line West, take
in stunning views of the Chicago River and
the Merchandise Mart. Step off the train to
visit the verdant Garfield Park Conservatory.
Tour concludes in Oak Park.
Innovation and Architecture July 24, August 14
Take a truly historic trip on the Green Line
South, which transported visitors to both of
Chicago’s world’s fairs. Step off the train to
walk through the architecturally renowned
Illinois Institute of Technology campus and
learn about neighboring Bronzeville, where the
Great Migration made its greatest impact.
Tour concludes in the Loop.

Sheffield Stroll
June 11, July 9, August 13, 2:00 P.M.
Explore the history of the Sheffield/DePaul
neighborhood, from its earliest German
settlers to today’s well-heeled residents.
Stroll past Victorian architecture and sites of
Hollywood films. Wrap up at one of the city’s
finest corner establishments, Kelly’s Pub. Feel
free to stop in and purchase a drink after the
tour! Food and beverages are not included in
the ticket price. Meet at the Fullerton L stop
near the DePaul Art Museum.

great railway terminals with our expert guides
and discover the hidden stories and spaces
that go unseen by thousands each day. Explore
the city’s rich transportation heritage while
strolling through the historic Union Station
and examining its monumental exterior.

the street-level Jackson entrance to Union Station,

and famous caroused on the coast. Enjoy
ornate architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright
and Louis Sullivan, step onto a rare woodblock alleyway, and take in early mansions
such as the Archbishop’s Residence, which
has remained virtually unchanged since 1880.

Rosehill Cemetery East July 24
Embark on an architectural journey
through the Victorian-era section of one
of the city’s most notable cemeteries.
Encounter some of the most complete
commemorations of the Civil War, including
the graves of fourteen Union generals, six

features a variety of architectural styles and
notable characters from Catholic cardinals
to Playboy bunnies.
Wet and Wild Fountains
Saturday, July 16, 9:30 A.M. Meet at CHM.
Chicago’s parks contain nearly 300 fountains,
sculptures, and monuments. Tour some of
these unique public works on this ride through
Lincoln Park and the Gold Coast. Led by
Greg Borzo, author of Where to Bike Chicago
and Chicago Fountains, the tour includes
15–20 miles of biking and ends in the Loop.
Tour runs approximately 3 hours.
Now in its twenty-second year, the award
is the nation’s highest honor given to
institutions that respond to the public’s
needs in innovative ways, enriching their
community. CHM was celebrated for its
community-based exhibitions such as
Shalom Chicago, My Chinatown, and Out
in Chicago, as well as partnering with local
groups for annual events like the Day of
Remembrance for Japanese internment. To

Commemorate our nation’s independence at the Museum. Join
us for time-honored traditions, family-friendly festivities, and a
keynote oration by Cook County commissioner Larry Suffredin.
Other highlights include patriotic musical performances, a reading
of the Declaration of Independence, and a children’s costume
parade led by the World’s Tallest Uncle Sam! Following the event,
the Museum is open from 12:00 NOON until 4:30 P.M. with free
admission for Illinois residents.

Exhibitions Our galleries showcase Chicago’s extraordinary history.
The Mazza Foundation Gallery
Lincoln’s Undying Words
Discover how Abraham Lincoln’s changing views toward slavery transformed America.
The exhibition explores this powerful story through five key speeches made by Lincoln between
1858 and 1865. Rare treasures, including Lincoln’s family carriage and the bed in which he died,
are on view, supplemented by an audio program of selected excerpts from the speeches.
Lincoln’s Undying Words is presented in partnership with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield,
Illinois. This exhibition includes artifacts from the Chicago History Museum’s renowned John and Jeanne Rowe Abraham and
Mary Todd Lincoln Collection. Established in part by The Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust and Elizabeth Morse Genius
Charitable Trust, the Exhibition Innovation Fund has provided additional funding for Lincoln’s Undying Words.

EXHIBITIONS
Chicagoan Main Rousseau Bocher (1890–1976) worked diligently to become a successful
fashion illustrator, editor in chief of French Vogue, and establish one of the most respected
couture salons of the early to mid-twentieth century. His diverse client list included the Duchess
of Windsor, Mrs. Alfred G. Vanderbilt, and Mrs. John C. Wilson, formerly Princess Natasha
Paley, in addition to the United States Navy and Chicago’s Passavant Memorial Hospital.
Featuring nearly thirty garments from the Museum’s collection as well as fashion illustrations
and photography, this exhibition explores the life and legacy of a remarkable man and his
journey to become Mainbocher, America’s first couturier.

The Alcoves
Our exciting film transports visitors through
major events in the city’s history. Feel the
intensity of the Great Chicago Fire and gaze
at the splendor of the World’s Columbian
Exposition. Stand amidst the bustle of 1950s
Maxwell Street and peer down from the top
of the Sears Tower during its construction.
Relive Chicago sports victories and cheer
on President Obama during his Grant Park
victory speech. This 25-minute film runs
throughout the day.

Vivian Maier’s Chicago
For decades, Vivian Maier worked as a
nanny for North Shore families. Loved by
her charges, she kept a secret—she was a
talented photographer. Only after her death
did her extensive work become well known.
Discover the diverse images taken by this
tireless photographer, who captured the local
character of Chicago’s streets in unique ways.

Examine the stories behind eight conflicts
over American freedom dating from the 1850s
to the 1970s. Through artifacts, audio clips,
videos, and activities, each conflict is presented
from the participants’ perspectives.
