VOLUME 23 H E NEWS G ARAGE D OOR T FEBRUARY 2014 ISSUE 2 BEA Introduces New Automatic Swing-Door Sensor PENNSYLVANIA - BEA has recently introduced the new LZR-Microscan door-mounted sensor. The LZR-Microscan door-mounted sensor provides increased safety for swing doors. The standalone sensor uses laserbased time-of-flight technology to create self-adapting detection zones that instantly adjust to a door’s position; from completely closed to completely open and all points between. The LZR-Microscan’s laser-based time-of-flight technology also helps eliminate nui- sance detections. Stack pressure, bunched carpet, stray leaves, snow and other environmental elements will not interfere with the sensor’s performance. The LZR-Microscan is listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) as a supplementary entrapment detection device. Additionally, the system combines overhead and door-mounted presence detection that exceeds ANSI 156.10 requirements. According to the company, the LZR-Microscan is easy-to- install, setup and operate. This they note, provides an added benefit to door manufacturers, installers and technicians, who will spend less time on-site and receive fewer callbacks. A truly plug-and-play system, the LZR-Microscan is a one-size-fits-all safety sensor requiring only four installation parameters for standard setup. These parameter selections are made on the LED screen of a centralized hub, and the actual sensor requires no physical adjustments. Bill, the company’s General Manager, is concerned that he is at a point where he does not really understand the potential of the technology. Like most door companies, GDN Doors had developed a simple website in the 1990s. The site showed some door photos, gave contact information and hoped that people would call the company or visit its showroom. As time progressed, GDN Doors added new capabilities to the web site, drawing heavily on the web resources of GDN Doors’ key suppliers. As Facebook entered the horizon, GDN Doors developed a Facebook presence. Bill’s goals were fairly simple: he was not expecting direct sales, he was looking at Facebook as an additional channel of communication to the consumer. When Twitter entered the market, Bill was convinced that it would have no impact on garage door sales. He watched its development, and decided to not launch a Twitter presence. And now Bill has been shown 3-4 additional social media sites that have the potential to change the company’s interaction with homeowners. Pinterest, for example, has photos that are of interest to homeowners, but Bill wonders how he can use this opportunity to build GDN Doors' sales. Bill is willing to put in the time to understand these social media opportunities. He understands that some will work and others will fade away. His concern, however, is that at 52, he's the wrong person to evaluate these social media opportunities. Does he have to be an active user of social media to take advantage of the opportunities? This is a case where the manager is interested in getting advice in a very specific situation, but it may be more appropriate to provide a broader framework rather than detailed specifics. Bill is worried that he may miss out on some promotional opportunities if he does not take advantage of social media growth. He is further worried that he is the wrong person to evaluate social media options because of his age. Bill needs to return to core marketing principles and the answer to his questions will flow from that analysis. The key to marketing strategy is the understanding that we are trying to use marketing variables to influence consumer behavior. And so we begin by defining our target market and determining what message we want to get in the mind of that ideal customer. This has to be done by Bill independent of any given promotional opportunity. It has to be a top-of-mind understanding of who we sell to and what we want them thinking when they hear our company name or consider buying a garage door – it’s called positioning or a position statement. Once a manager knows who he wants to sell to and what he wants that person thinking, all advertising options need to be evaluated on their ability to deliver that positioning message to the target market. That means that the growth rate of a specific social media site, for example, is irrelevant if that site is not used by and influencing your target market. So Bill should keep his eye on new social media options, but he shouldn’t think that failing to jump in immediately will ruin his business. It may be a good idea for Bill to begin collecting data from homeowners in his target market….learning what social media sites they use. Case 23-2: Analyzing Unsuccessful Sales Proposals GDN Doors was established over 30 years ago by a pair of brothers who had been working for another door installation company in a nearby city. The owner of that original company had actually helped the brothers start up, and remained a minority partner for the first ten years of the company’s operations. The company quickly gained a reputation as a trustworthy garage door company that focused primarily on the residential renovation market. Bill joined GDN Doors four years ago as an installation and service manager. He brought with him years of experience in the commercial/industrial door market. His specialty was highend installations and 24/7 service operations. While GDN Doors had always done some new commercial installations, it had never been the focus of the company. Backed by Bill’s technical expertise and the hiring of two installation teams, GDN Doors successfully grew its market share in larger commercial doors. For the first time, GDN Doors also started bidding on projects that included rolling steel doors and large industrial sectional doors. The problem is that they never seem to get the projects, even when they tried really low mark-ups. Even though Bill was not responsible for sales, the owner of the company asked him to take the lead on figuring out why GDN Doors' proposals were uncompetitive. While Bill is well-trained on the installation and service side, he doesn’t know where to begin on understanding the sales process. How can he figure out what is going wrong? Who can he turn to for advice? What are some possible reasons? NOTICE TO CASE READERS: All business cases in the Garage Door News involve fictitious companies facing realistic business problems. The Garage Door News 6 FEBRUARY 2014 D&D Introduces an External Mounting Addition to its SureClose Line CALIFORNIA - D&D Technologies has introduced an external mounting addition to its SureClose line of hydraulic hinge gate closers, SureClose ReadyFit. The new ReadyFit models come with side fixing legs for quick alignment and multiple, double-face fixing points for superior strength. Mounting bracket options include steel and aluminum that can either be welded or fastened. Fasteners are included with every model. Additionally, ReadyFit comes with vertical alignment slots while horizontal adjustment is controlled via the built-in adjustment feature. “While these commercial-grade hinge-closers offer smooth, finely controlled gate closure, the greatest feature of our new ReadyFit models is the easy and convenient mounting style,” says D&D Technologies SVP Sales and Marketing, Jim Paterson. “No need for drilling large holes, and fabricators and contractors choosing the steel bracket models can either weld or fasten using the Tek screws supplied. SureClose ReadyFit is the breakthrough in gate hardware engineering the industry has been asking for.” The heavy-duty ReadyFit mounting system is designed for use on metal, wood and vinyl gates. The company notes that ReadyFit comes in a variety of closing options to cater to all types of commercial and residential gates. There’s a version offering adjustable gateclosing speed and final snap-close action (to overcome electric or coded locks), and a load bearing model that is non-self-closing for use on access control gates with a weight capacity of 1,500 lbs (680kgs). The closer models will self-close gates weighing up to 260 lbs (120 kgs). ReadyFit also provides improved performance and tamper resistance, with the adjustable snap-close feature providing 30% stronger action when required. One option includes a ‘hold-open’ feature and permits gates to swing 180°. In addition, each ReadyFit comes with an adjustment tool and provides a gate gap variance of ½” to 1 3/8”, which suits a wide variety of new and existing gates. The trend is a six-month moving average of the monthly seasonally adjusted annual rates (SAAR) of housing starts. “The trend in housing starts has remained essentially stable since October 2013. Housing demand continues to be healthy in Canada. The trend in existing home sales has been increasing since April 2013, while the trend in inventories of newly completed and unabsorbed homes has been declining at a modest pace since September 2013,” said Bruno Duhamel, Manager of Economic and Housing Analysis at CMHC. CMHC uses the trend measure as a complement to the monthly SAAR of housing starts to account for considerable swings in monthly estimates and obtain a more complete picture of the state of the housing market. In some situations analyzing only SAAR data can be misleading in some markets, as they are largely driven by the multiples segment of the markets which can be quite volatile from one month to the next. The standalone monthly SAAR was 189,672 units in December, a decrease from 197,797 in November. The SAAR of urban starts decreased by 5.1 per cent in December to 168,214 units. Multiple urban starts decreased by 4.1 per cent to 108,910 units in December while the single-detached urban starts segment decreased by 6.7 per cent to 59,304 units. In December, the seasonContinued Page 10 FEBRUARY 2014 Zwipe Launches Contactless Biometric Card NORWAY - Zwipe is launching its Zwipe Access biometric card, a contactless card with full on-card fingerprint scanning and matching functionality. According to the company, the use of fingerprint touch sensors from Fingerprint Cards (FPC) enables Zwipe to create the highest level of security with maximum user convenience. The Zwipe Access card allows unique customer adaptation through multi-application functionality and is also ISO 14443 compliant, which enables the card to work with existing contactless readers and access control infrastructure. Fingerprint data is stored inside the secure card and a positive match activates encrypted communication with a reader or lock. Only the owner of the card can activate the card, rendering lost or stolen cards inoperable. “Providing secure personal ID authentication in an easy-to-use portable device has been our goal,” says Kim Kristian Humborstad, CEO of Zwipe. “Together with FPC’s touch sensor, we have achieved this in our Zwipe Access biometric card. The card provides a secure environment, protecting user data while still being able to communicate easily with access control systems using standard interfaces. FPC’s fingerprint sensors deliver the performance and functionality that our card product requires in an application where low power consumption and compact size are crucial.” “The access control market using cards and tokens is expanding constantly and the challenge is to combine security with user convenience,” says Thomas Rex, EVP Sales & Marketing of Fingerprint Cards. “Zwipe’s biometric card is the solution to this and is a state-of-the-art product that really pushes the limits to what is possible to do on a card today. The use of a touch sensor provides an enhanced user experience and is in line with the worldwide trend of integrating touch sensors into portable devices.” Carlo Gavazzi Launches New App ONTARIO - Carlo Gavazzi has recently launched a new app for Apple and Android mobile devices. Recently, one of the largest U.S. distributors of industrial, medical and specialty gases, and hard goods, approached Bluff Manufacturing to find a solution that would help employees move gas canisters up and down curbs safely. In the gas cylinder distribution process, steel cylinder pallets are used to hold both filled and depleted cylinders. Bluff Manufacturing developed AWL and AWC Aluminum Plates, specially designed for the safe transport and distribution of gas cylinders on and off pallets, which would allow employees to get gas canisters up and down the curb without having to lift them. According to the company, the AWL and AWC Plates provide excellent transition surfaces for maneuvering cylinders with ease and control, reducing the risk of damage to cylinders and property as well as injury to personnel handling the cylinders. The customer wanted to ensure that employees always knew the capacity limits on the plates so that they would not be used inappropriately. After conducting research, Bluff found a way to efficiently etch the capacity into each plate so that the information would always be available. When another customer, one of the largest independent welding and industrial gas suppliers in the Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas areas, approached Bluff Manufacturing with a need for sturdy gas cylinder pallets, to fit their custom trucks, Bluff met the challenge and designed a product to meet their specific needs. Bluff’s steel gas cylinder pallets are used in the gas cylinder distribution process to hold both filled and depleted cylinders. The company notes that these plates provide a transition surface for maneuvering cylinders with ease and control, significantly reducing cylinder damage and the risk of employee injury. 3/8" thick aluminum diamond plate construction is strong enough to accommodate heavy cylinders, yet lightweight for easy hand placement and portability. ANSI code and weight capacity is stamped onto the back of each plate. With a mission to address broad-based manufacturing challenges in Illinois, IML brings together technical resources and commercialized expertise to increase the competitiveness, productivity and profitability of Illinois manufacturers. The IML is supported by matching $5 million contributions from the State of Illinois and the University of Illinois leveraging the UI Labs platform. On Friday, December 13th, Governor Quinn, along with Caralynn Nowinski, UI Labs executive director and chief operating officer, announced the 10 companies that were selected to take part in the initial pilot projects. Raynor Manufacturing Company was selected as 1 of 10 companies to participate in the project. Raynor will be working with IML and their supercomputer to develop computer simulations of loads on garage door sections. "Our goal is to streamline our product design and development process by establishing a baseline simulation model that reflects the loads seen on a garage door section. We would like to simulate these forces, and then be able to make adjustments to our design criteria to enhance or reduce materials and components. Working with IML's supercomputer should enable us to develop products faster and more efficiently to give our customers a better and more cost effective product," said Brad Kunde, Director of Product Engineering at Raynor. As more states and municipalities enact stricter building codes in areas of the country affected by hurricanes and tornadoes, Raynor's goal will be to improve the design of products that can have a positive influence to safeguarding property and life, and improve their speed to market. Consumers enjoy discounted products much less if they have to wait for them. “Price promotions are common in the marketplace. For consumers, these promotions translate into real economic savings, guide buying decisions, encourage trial of new products, and make consumers feel smart and good about themselves,” write authors Leonard Lee (Columbia University) and Claire I. Tsai (University of Toronto) in “How Price Promotions Influence Postpurchase Consumption Experience over Time.” The article is set to be published in February 2104. This is a common promotional tactic within the garage door industry, as dealers try to react to aggressive competition – with price promotions on doors, openers or accessories. The study, however, indicates that sometimes discounts backfire, especially if consumers need to wait to enjoy the product. The authors examined how discounts influence pleasurerelated consumption experiences. Not surprisingly, they found that discounts generally make consumers happier. More interesting, perhaps, is that the authors also found that paying a lower price for a product reduces the need to justify the expenditure, which causes people to pay less attention during consumption, dampening enjoyment. The relative strength of these opposing forces depends on when the product is consumed after payment—right away or after a delay. The authors conducted four experiments involving real spending and consumption, using a variety of products (chocolates, music, orange juice) and different durations of consumption delay. In one of the experiments, participants purchased one of two types of chocolate truffles at either the regular price of $1 or a discount of 50 cents. Half of the participants consumed the chocolate right away, and the other half waited for a week before consuming the chocolate. Consumers enjoyed the chocolate less when they had to wait a week. While authors researched the issues in product lines very different from the garage door market, there are ideas that should draw the attention of garage door sales people and sales managers. Most important is the issue that the timing of a price promotion can have an impact on its perceived value. It is too easy for a sales person to assume that a 5-10% price cut is substantial enough to a client that it would always have positive results. This research indicates that companies that compensate homeowners for installation delays (“Unfortunately that door is on backorder, but I should be able to knock off 5% from the installation cost because of your patience.”) may be hurting their prospects. In addition, the research indicates that a price reduction may diminish the perceived importance of the product. So a door dealer who, for example, throws in a free second remote control, may actually be undermining the perceived value of extra remotes. “Our research provides new insight for better understanding the mixed effects of discounts on sales and loyalty, offering an explanation for why discounts may increase sales in the short run, but could have negative long-term effects on customer satisfaction and brand loyalty,” the authors conclude. CARLO GAVAZZI APP (Cont'd) simply enters a part number and the available inventory appears, as well as the list price and product group. The Master Zone Counter (MZC) is a standalone controller that keeps track of the number of available parking spaces in different zones of parking facilities. Sensors, mounted at entry and exit points of each zone, allow the MZC to monitor cars going in and out. Drivers are guided to the free parking bays through MZC-controlled signs, including arrows and localized zone counts. Additionally, the total number of available spaces can be displayed outside of the parking area to potential visitors. The MZC allows for flexibility in developing a parking monitoring system. Projects can now be designed according to specific needs and budget. The MZC can be combined with single spot systems to monitor rooftop spaces, or track accessible and reserved spaces separately. The company BOOK DISCOUNTS CAR LEASING CAR RENTAL CELL PHONES notes that an MZC installation has a much lower upfront cost than traditional systems, while still providing an effective and eyecatching solution. Carlo Gavazzi’s parking solutions are all based on the Dupline 3-wire bus network. Up to 3,840 parking spaces divided into multiple zones can be managed by one MZC and up to 120 car detection sensors can be linked to the MZC via the Dupline 3-wire bus with power and communication. The car detection sensors can be ultrasonic, photoelectric, or loop detector type and each zone can have multiple entry and exit points. Configuration, monitoring and count adjustment is done via a built-in webserver. The system has full compatibility with the Dupline single spot parking guidance system, thereby allowing mixed systems. QUESTION 1: The white weatherstrip that runs around the frame of my garage door is cracked due to aging. How do I replace it? Also the black rubber strip at the bottom of my garage door is also cracked. How do I replace this as well? QUESTION 1, ANSWER 1: The garage door weatherstrip looks sort of like an oversized doorstop with the vinyl piece sticking out of it. Pry off the piece of "wood" with the torn vinyl/ plastic and cut the replacement to length, nail back up and caulk and paint as required. The garage door bottom weatherstrip will slide out of the grooves in the bottom of the door to either side. Thread the replacement weatherstrip into the grooves and you're done. It helps to use a little liquid soap to make it slide through easier. All parts you need should be available in the big box stores. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 2: Or a lumber yard. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 3: I bought this product to weatherstrip the top and sides of my garage door - MD Building Products 7 ft. White Dual-Vinyl Top and Side Weatherstripping Sweep for Garage Doors. My house is white, so I didn't have to paint it, but it says it can be painted to match. It has held up very well for more years than I can remember. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 4: Take a few pictures of the doors - a few far back to get an overall view of each of the doors, and then close ups from inside and 26 FEBRUARY 2014 THIS MONTH'S QUESTIONS QUESTION 1: QUESTION 2: QUESTION 3: Replacing cracked weatherstripping Wiring for home automation Replacing an old wood door outside angles so you can show the store clerk/attendee supporter exactly what you need. Include a ruler in the close up photos to show actual dimensions. QUESTION 2: I ran a TM751 RF transceiver with HR12A keypads, AM466 appliance modules (better for CFLs), and lamp modules for my home automation lighting setup. Recently, most of the modules stopped working. Only the A1 (default for the transceiver) seemed to work properly. Then I noticed that the next closest module for my LED undercabinet lighting was still working. It's about 8' away from the xceiver on the same circuit. Other modules work in the socket, too. Everything points to something dampening the signal from the xceiver, but how do I check that? Alas, I have no Oscope here. I recently added 22k resistors to the input of many of the lamp and appliance modules, but everything was working for several weeks afterward, so I'm wont to rule that out. Anyone familiar with X-10? Clues would be appreciated. Oh, I also waited until the fridge and heater were both off to test the working of the modules, thinking they might be producing enough noise to kill the DC signal on the AC line. That made no difference. I have another TM751 around here somewhere but haven't been able to find it to test with it. QUESTION 2, ANSWER 1: Had a kind of similar problem with my garage door opener. Turned out the wireless remote doorbell switch battery was low, and was transmitting all the time, but not enough to trigger the doorbell. Changed the battery, and all was well. QUESTION 3 (From the UK): I'm in Milton Keynes. I need a new up and over door and mechanism for a standard garage, plus the timber each side, which have rotted away at the bottom. What things do I need to consider when firms quote me for the work (I'm nearly 70 so can't do it myself). Can anyone give me a ball park figure before I start contacting firms? Once it's fitted, I can paint it. QUESTION 3, ANSWER 1: Have you considered a sectional door instead? Easy to draftproof, insulate, and motorize, and easier to open from the inside.
