CHALDEAN COMMERCE FALL 2015
xcitement is in the air as we embark upon the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the new stateof-the-art Chaldean Community Center which is set to
open its doors in November. This monumental occasion marks a testament to the unwavering commitment
and tireless efforts of the many sponsors, volunteers
and donors who dedicated their resources and time to
make this possible. During a time of unprecedented
and unsettling transformation taking place in Iraq, this
innovative center will provide the necessary capacity to
SAAD ABBO
assist more than 20,000 individuals a year who travel to
Michigan with a variety of crucial necessities that many
of us take for granted. This includes refugee acculturation services, job placement, immigration assistance and auto financing through the
Chaldean Loan Fund.
Over the past few months, the Chaldean Chamber of Commerce (CACC) and the
Chaldean Community Foundation (CCF) have hosted a variety of successful networking and charitable events, including the 12th Annual Golf Outing which raised
more than $50,000 to help support the many services and initiatives that the CCF
provides. In addition, this year we hosted the 2nd Annual Sounds of Babylon concert
which brought out hundreds in celebration of Chaldean music and culture.
Speaking of successful events, this year’s 10th Annual Business Luncheon was
nothing short of exemplary thanks to guest speakers Tom Wilson, President and CEO
of Olympia Entertainment, and Steve Marquardt, Vice President of Olympia Development of Michigan. Nearly 300 guests attended the interactive discussion which
provided insight into the employment and business opportunities emerging from the
new Detroit Red Wings arena and the surrounding development district.
Although the year is coming to a close, we look forward to continuing to provide
our members with premier events, forums and benefits to propel your businesses
and careers to new heights. We welcome you to join us and experience the power
of membership at the Chamber’s upcoming signature events: Annual Meeting &
Board Election (Nov. 11) and Annual Member Christmas Party (Dec. 3). Our many
programs and events will give your business exposure, educate you, and provide
countless networking opportunities – making you stand out from the pack. In 2016,
we plan to endlessly strive to deliver new value to your membership with the understanding that your success is our success.
Thank you for your past and ongoing support of the Chamber and Foundation.
We are humbled and thrilled by your support and we consider ourselves honored to
serve you.

her for continuously supporting our Chamber and the Chaldean community’s efforts to
aid persecuted minorities in the Middle East.
On June 9, the CACC Civil Liberty Advocates
committee (CLA) convened. The CLA committee was created in an effort to quell the
growing practices of prejudice and discrimination. During the meeting, committee members
addressed and resolved formal complaints
submitted by members of the community. If
you or someone you know has faced discrimination or have a workplace grievance
and would like the Chamber to consider your
complaint, please send a detailed email to
[email protected].

U.S. Senators Stabenow and Peters
Introduce Bill to Increase Support for
Michigan Refugees
In June, U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters introduced the Domestic Refugee Resettlement Reform and Modernization Act (S.1615), a bill sponsored
to ensure Michigan recieves critical funding needed to
support refugee families who settle in Michigan. Under
current law, if refugees move from one state to another,
the resettlement assistance often does not follow them
to their new location. This results in funding shortages
in states with high numbers of refugees like Michigan.
Senators Stabenow and Peters’ bill revises the state
funding formula used by the Office of Refugee Resettlement so that it accounts for future refugee arrivals and
more accurately distributes funds to state resettlement
offices. It also helps refugees become independent
by increasing access to job retraining. The bill is now
pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Senator Peters Urges Obama Administration to Resettle More Syrian, Persecuted Religious Minority Refugees
In October, U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) announced
he has joined his colleagues Senator Richard Blumenthal (CT) and Congressman Bill Pascrell (NJ) in leading
a letter to President Obama urging the United States
to resettle at least 100,000 refugees from Syria and
persecuted religious minority refugees in both Iraq and
Syria in the coming years, including 30,000 refugees in
fiscal year 2016. “We urge you to work with Congress through the budget and appropriations process
to allocate sufficient resources to effectively increase
and thoroughly screen applicants for resettlement in
the United States,” wrote Peters and his colleagues.
“Likewise, the Administration can and should institute
reforms to boost the number of refugees processed by
taking the following actions which do not require additional resources.” The Obama administration has previously announced a goal of resettling 85,000 refugees
in the next fiscal year, including at least 10,000 Syrian
refugees in the United States through the United States
Refugee Admission Program.

Keep Your Candidate!
Five Tips From Recruiter Adam Kaplan
Finding qualified candidates for open
positions in our improving job market
can be challenging. The number of open
positions is far greater than the number of
available candidates who may be hesitant
to switch jobs when they’re feeling secure
and being paid well. As a result, employers should do everything they can to keep
desirable candidates interested in making
a move. Here are a few tips to keep candidates engaged in your hiring process:
Set Realistic Expectations
When talking with candidates, provide
a realistic description of the position.
Most candidates would rather know
the positives and negatives of a position
during the recruiting process rather than
being surprised when they start a new
role. This preview should also include a
candid description of growth opportunities, both experientially and monetarily.
Share Your Company Culture
Make sure candidates have an opportunity to learn about your company culture.
Provide opportunities for candidates to
talk with multiple people about the organization and how it is unique. Tell stories
about your company culture that will
give candidates a feel for your organization. Even better, provide opportunities
in the recruiting process for candidates
to experience your culture first hand. For
example, give the candidate a tour of the
office. Show him or her your common
areas. Introduce him/her to people in the
organization — the way you would if he/
she was starting work there. This helps
the candidate imagine what it would
actually be like to work for you.
Interviewing Is A Two-Way Street
Don’t make the mistake of focusing solely
on whether a candidate is the right fit for
a position while neglecting to consider if
the position is the right fit for the candidate. During the recruiting process, it is
key to find out your candidate’s interests
and goals to determine if the position
fits him/her. Offer opportunities for
candidates to ask questions and to learn
as much as they can about your organization and the position they seek to fill.
This allows the candidate to discern if the
position is the right fit for them.
Be Responsive
Keep candidates updated on progress
throughout the recruiting process. If a
candidate reaches out to you with a question, provide timely and honest answers.
Make every effort to keep the recruiting
process moving forward. Process delays
can result in a strong candidate who loses
interest or accepts another position with
your competitor! If there is a delay in the
process, continue communicating with
candidates regarding the position status.
Regular, honest communication will help
to keep candidates engaged.
Show Appreciation
Give honest, sincere appreciation to candidates for participating in the recruiting
process. Candidates invest a significant
amount of time in the recruiting process,
and employers should appreciate the candidate’s investment. Have you ever thought of
sending a thank you letter to the candidate,
instead of him/her sending one to you?
By building these elements into your
recruiting process, you will have more
success keeping candidates in your
recruiting process and making an offer
your ideal candidate cannot refuse.
