The new £20m Renishaw
Innovation Centre has been
opened formally by Her
Royal Highness, The Princess
Royal, who also presented the
company with a Queen’s Award
for Enterprise in the Innovation

The Renishaw Innovation

space which houses R&D and
corporate services staff, as well
as demonstration, training and

FFG to acquire MAG Group
Taiwanese machine tool maker Fair Friend
Group (FFG) is set to buy automotive machine
tool-focused MAG Group, including MAG
IAS GmbH. Machine brands within MAG include
Boehringer, Cross Hüller, Ex-Cell-O and Lamb.
The agreement became effective as of last month,
with closing of the transaction expected before
October 2015. The companies intend to present their
combined offering together at the EMO trade fair in
Milan in October.
The deal is the result of a long-standing
relationship between chairman and founder of FFG
Jimmy Chu, FFG Europe chairman Luigi Maniglio,
MAG owner Prof Mo Meidar and CEO of MAG IAS
GmbH Dr Reiner Beutel.

EOS and GFMS combine efforts
EOS, a German specialist
in additive manufacturing
(AM) solutions, has entered
into a strategic co-operation with
Switzerland-based EDM, milling
machine and laser ablation expert,
GF Machining Solutions (GFMS),
to offer customers products and
services combining technologies
from both companies.
EOS and GFMS have agreed
to focus on solutions for the mould
and die sector. AM technology
offers mouldmakers the possibility
to generate metal inserts featuring
cooling close to the surface,
allowing a shorter mould cooling
sequence and therefore a much
faster plastic injection cycle.

prove instant hit
Following its three-day open
house event last month,

‘education open days’ on 15 and

Machine orders JSB takes first
up in Japan
Romi machine
The most recent figures from the Japan
Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA)
reveal that the total value of machine tool orders
in May was ¥138.55bn. This was an increase of 2.9%
compared with April and marked the first month of
growth in two months. This figure also represented an
increase of 15% compared to the same month of the
previous year, with May posting the 20th consecutive
month of year-on-year growth. The total amount of
orders topped ¥130bn for four consecutive months
and marked a record high amount in May.

JSB Plastics has installed its 12th and largest
plastic injection moulding machine to date. The
Primax 600R is its first Romi machine and runs
alongside 11 Sandretto machines at the company’s
Leicester facility. JSB’s Michele Cooper explains
the thinking behind this latest investment with Romi:
“We mould for various sectors, including automotive
and point of sale, but we were limited in the size of
moulding. The new machine opens up opportunities
on larger pieces, up to 4.2 kg, compared with the
1.5 kg maximum we have been handling.”

with Mitutoyo CMM
At Gateshead-based Express
Engineering, Mitutoyo
has recently overseen the
installation of its largest ever
co-ordinate measuring machine
(CMM) in the UK. The Crysta-Apex
C, which has a measuring volume
of 2,000 by 4,005 by 2,005 mm in
the X, Y and Z axes respectively,
enables Express Engineering to
undertake the inspection of oil and
gas components that include large
wellheads, Christmas tree valves,
manifolds, completions, tooling,
flow-lines and connections.
The CMM is an adapted version
of a large capacity Mitutoyo CrystaApex C, model 204020. To enable
oversize components to stand
upright when being measured,
it was modified by adding an
extended Z-axis and a 1.2 m
diameter hole through its granite
measuring table. Riser plates
were fitted to elevate the granite
table and a lower component
support was located beneath the
hole. These modifications enable

laser scanning or other
optical systems ensures
that delicate components are
not damaged while they are
being measured; and soft or
compressible materials are not
deformed. The disadvantage is
that non-tactile measuring cannot
match the precision of touch
probes and photoelectric scanning
of linear encoder graduations.
To address the problem of how
to measure sensitive components
accurately, Heidenhain has
introduced a length gauge that
ensures the tactile probe it carries
imparts negligible force to the
surface being inspected. It is a
result of a low measuring force
curve between 0.01 and 0.07
N over the 12 mm measuring
range. If a pin were to replace
the standard probe contact, the
pressure would not be sufficient
to burst a balloon, says the
Heidenhain.
Called Metro 1281 MW, the
length gauge can, for example,
safely inspect small plastic gears
or polished medical components
without scratching the surface.
Transparent or reflective materials
that present difficulties when
scanning optically, can likewise be
measured.

“Prior to purchasing the new
Mitutoyo CMM, inspecting larger
components would necessitate a
partial inspection on one of our
larger CMMs, before repositioning

Mole. “Although our previous
technique was accurate, the
volume of wellheads and other
large oil and gas components
we now manufacture, meant we
needed to find a quicker, more
efficient solution.
“The latest CMM has enabled
us to slash inspection times on
components such as wellheads,”
he continues. “For instance, a
comprehensive final inspection
routine on a complex wellhead that
previously took over 12 hours, now
takes just 4 hours.”

High precision ball bearing
guides are a core component
of the Metro 1281 MW. The
combination of these guides and
precision photoelectric scanning
achieves repeatability of less than
0.03 µm over the full measuring
range, while system accuracy lies
within ±0.2 µm.
In addition to low measuring
force, the unit features a Zerodur
precision graduation with a 2
µm signal period. Zerodur has a
thermal coefficient of expansion of
almost 0 ppm/K in the 0 to 50°C
range, so ambient temperature
effectively has no influence on
expansion of the scale during
normal operating conditions.

Huddersfield-based Ardor
Engineering, a specialist in
precision machined components,
recently began searching for a new
co-ordinate measuring machine
(CMM).
“Having considered several
alternative CMMs, an impressive
demonstration of Aberlink’s

Hexagon releases Leitz CMM jogbox
Hexagon Metrology has announced the
release of a new jogbox operating panel,
which offers a more intuitive and userfriendly way for operators to interface with
Leitz coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
Designed for the touch-screen generation,
the revamp is based on a modern tablet-style
design, improving the unit’s ergonomics with
the addition of a central display alongside the
two joystick controllers.
The wireless device features integrated,
rechargeable batteries and comes with a
mains-powered docking station, which can in
turn be placed on an adjustable and moveable
stand. All the machine control functions are

displayed on the jogbox screen through a
software app running on Android, making
functionality more instinctive to minimise
operator workload and training requirements.
“To design this new jogbox, we took
inspiration from the mobile devices we

Blum probe generates
20% time savings
Langenenslingen,
Germany-based Rumpel
Präzisionstechnik, a specialist
in the machining of turbine wheels
for automotive turbochargers made
typically from heat-resistant super
alloys such as Nimonic, Monel or
Inconel, is using a TC54-10 touch
probe from Blum-Novotest to
achieve time savings of 20%.
The difficulty when turning
turbine wheels for turbochargers
is controllability. For example, the
diameter as well as the length
of the pin on the rear side of the
turbine wheel is machined at
Rumpel Präzisionstechnik on a
Biglia 565 YS twin-spindle mill.
To be able to meet tolerances of
0.012 mm in combination with
difficult-to-machine materials, each
workpiece had to be measured
manually after pre-turning and
again after one of two finishing
cuts. Then, correction values had
to be entered manually in the
machine control.
“The original idea behind
acquiring the Blum Novotest touch
probe was the determination of
workpiece alignment," explains
Gerhard Englisch, works manager.

machine shop, Nisan
Engineering, has installed a
new CMM from Nikon Metrology
as part of a move to upgrade
its metrology department. The
purchase of an Altera 8.7.6 CNC
means the company is able to
inspect the most complex of parts
in a fraction of the time that was
needed previously on a manual
machine.
Over half of the ISO
9002-registered subcontractor's
turnover comes from the oil and
gas industry. The remaining
contracts are derived mainly from
the food, rail and marine sectors.
Batch quantity ranges from 1-off
prototypes to 1000-off, with the
first-off part always sent to the
metrology department. Then,
depending on the size of the
run, component complexity and
drawing tolerances, every 10th
component is checked on one of
the CMMs. A random sample from
the end of the batch is also fully
inspected.
Programs are created via
different routes. If a CAD model
exists, the data is entered into
CMM-Manager, from which the
inspection routine is produced
directly. If only a drawing is
available, a graphic of the part is
built up and a measuring cycle
created by manually moving the

As a consequence, Rumpel
opted to implement a closed
loop process using the wireless,
infrared touch probe. The former
manual steps become redundant
because the probe detects the
current dimension automatically
after each machining step and
can correct it immediately via the
machine control. The Blum touch
probe also performs automatic tool
breakage detection, which means
the machine control will issue a
fault message if the measured
dimension is out of tolerance
– because the cutting edge is
broken, for instance. Compared
with the former process it was
possible to achieve time savings
of 20% through the redundancy of
the manual measuring times alone.

and the machine control allows us to
achieve these enormous savings,”
summarises Englisch.

Five CMM suppliers were
reviewed by Nisan before the
purchasing decision was made,
says Dinesh Prajapati, a company
director: “All five potential CMM
providers carried out measuring
trials on one of our flow meter
cylinders, but cycle times were
broadly similar. However, we
preferred the build quality of
the Altera as well as the control
software’s ease of use. The fact
that the machine is built in nearby
Donington was an added bonus,
as was the 10-year accuracy
warranty and the supplier’s
willingness to offer a Renishaw
probe, which some others were
not.”

Faro unveils CAM2
Measure 10.5 software
Faro Technologies has
released its latest software
for the FaroArm, Faro
ScanArm and Faro Laser Tracker.
CAM2 Measure 10.5 has the
capability to connect multiple 3D
measurement devices within the
same coordinate system, and
simultaneously scan into a single
seat of software on one computer.
Significant advancements to
GD&T functionality in version 10.5
provide users with streamlined
analysis and visual reporting,
says Faro. A part inspection
can now be displayed just like a
print to visualise and determine
part quality. This enhancement
eliminates the need to look at each
feature in sequence to make the
same determination.
Workflow efficiencies are
also said to be maximised, with
the ability to automate repeat
inspections by programing data
analysis to occur automatically
after the measurements are taken.
Users are now able to
collect over 20 times more
data than previous versions
while maintaining accelerated
processing speed. New capabilities
also permit trim edges on materials
such as sheet metal to be easily
scanned, essentially eliminating
the need to collect hard-probed
measurements on part edges.
