RED DEER,
NATURALLY
It’s a beautiful summer morning. And it’s
t’s
early. The temptation to stay in bed is
ough
strong, but the allure of the trails is enough
Red Deer has over 100 km of trails connecting
the parks and criss-crossing the city, and it’s
safe to say I’ve explored them all – probably
to draw me out of my warm nest. The sun
has just come up as I travel along Kerry
Wood Drive, heading for Bower Ponds.
When I get there, I see that the crew has
a couple of times. This run is one of my
favourites for the early morning, because –
strangely enough – it smells amazing. As we
approach the bridge that crosses the river,
almost all arrived: a handful of my friends
and relatives, like-minded people who love
the chance to connect with nature as they
exercise. Some people might call us naturalists
or runners or even crazy but, no matter
what our title, this Saturday morning ritual
has become a year-round source of joy.
I start to smile as I think of it. Then, half
way across the bridge, it happens: I smell
the moist, tangy air of the forest we’ll soon
be entering. My friends tease me because,
once again, I comment on the wonderful
scent. I laugh, too, and take some deep,
cleansing breaths, savouring the moment.
My group spends a few minutes chatting
and stretching and then starts out, taking
one loop around Bower Ponds to warm up
before heading down the trail. The rising sun
makes the red brick Cronquist House glow
as we trot past, and two sassy squirrels have
an animated discussion in the nearby trees.
This is part of the appeal of the trails, as each
person from my friends to the cyclists, dog
walkers and Scouts we’ve said hello to this
morning, everyone will take some special,
personal memory from their experiences.
The vibrancy and life of this natural,
outdoor space will continue to provide
us all with joy for the rest of the day.
I take a deep breath and feel myself relax as
the fresh, cool morning air fills my lungs. My
muscles come alive and my senses awaken
to the variety of colours and scents and
sounds. A light mist is forming above the
river and the chatter of birds fills the trees as
we run along the path to Heritage Ranch.

Why not invite your friends and family to

exciting new sport in Red Deer, and it’s free

beginner course in Kentwood (2011). Score

Recently upgraded with a state-of-the-art
playground, with more than 50 play
activities for children aged 18 months to
12 years. Picnic shelter, fire-pits, washrooms
and firewood are also available on site.
Climb to the top of Piper Mountain for a
spectacular view of the city. Nearby is a
skate park, which is a popular destination
for skateboarders.
Red Deer is the perfect location for our
90-holes in 56 hours marathon event. The
city provides a midway meeting spot for my
friends, who live across the province. Plus,
me and my crew have a wealth of courses
to choose from, with rolling greens on
the banks of rivers and fairways threaded
through the forests of Central Alberta.
There are many lush, well-manicured
courses located within an hour’s drive of
Red Deer, and they’re challenging for any
skill level. Skill, it seems, is a topic that’s
received a lot of friendly yet competitive
discussion over the past few months.
to get started. The first hole comes with a lot
of pressure, as our initial drives will set the
tone for the entire weekend. Each of us takes
a decent-ish shot, with nothing abysmal, so
we all take deep breaths and head down the
fairway, chatting and catching up as we go.
Throughout the round, we share stories
and laughs, encouraging each other to try
different clubs and mocking each other
for missed shots. The sun is low in the sky
when we make the final putt on 18 and
head to the clubhouse for supper. The
discussion is filled with everyone’s thoughts
about the round: the turning point of the
day, the pure shot that gave some hope,
and the ever-elusive hole-in-one dream.
I’ve booked our five rounds at five different
courses, and we’ll hit the links in Red Deer
and in all four directions from it. Armed with
a couple of gag awards for the shortest drive
and the worst slice, I head out to meet my
friends for the first round on Friday evening.
I drive away from the course happy and
satisfied, filled up with the fun time I’ve
shared with my friends. And, the best part
is, there are still four more rounds to go.

There are currently ten ghosts scattered
throughout downtown. One of the most
dramatic is “Sound the Alarm,” located at 49
Street and 48 Avenue. This bronze, which depicts firefighters and their horses surging into
action, is a vibrant historical representation.
05
When you visit this ghost, you can also see
many more pieces of Red Deer’s history – all
within a short walking distance. “Sound the
Alarm” is located next to the former Armoury/
Fire Hall, one of the oldest buildings in Red
Deer, which now houses a portion of Red
Deer Public Library. The building can also
be your starting place for heritage walking

My friends and I are nestled in one of the
booths at the back, but the acoustics are
good and the music weaves through the
conversation and laughter that surrounds
us. Last week we enjoyed listening to Brad
Abel, another local musician, and I read
that next week Steve Arsenault will be
playing. There are a few larger music venues
in Red Deer, such as Local’s Pub, Bo’s and
the ever-popular Vat, where we can enjoy
full bands playing at higher volumes. But
when we’re looking for a setting where
conversation and a meal is completed by
live music, it’s nice to know there are a

The waitress is singing along under her

red onion and feta cheese. I promise myself
to pick up one of the CDs the musicians have

my drink, take a bite of pizza, and enjoy the
bright, lively atmosphere. We’re not staying
late tonight, but we know C-Note and Paeton

I’ll be playing their CD in my car tomorrow

OUR STREETS
COME ALIVE
As we approach the festival site in the heart
of downtown, the music and laughter float
toward us, beckoning us on. Soon the aromas
involving fire and unicycles. This performer
is from Australia, and we know throughout
the day we’ll see professional, acrobatic
from the food vendors envelop us – the smells
of mini-donuts, foot-long hot dogs, popcorn,
ethnic foods and lemonade stands mingle in
a heady swirl that makes our stomachs growl.
goofballs from central Alberta, Canada and
around the world. Our favourite part is when
a good-natured man from the audience is
drawn into the act, throwing flaming torches
It’s CentreFest – Red Deer’s annual street
performers’ festival – and we know we’re in
for a day of treats. The children’s eyes are
as big as saucers as they try to decide which
direction to go first. As for me, the kid in me
is just as delighted.
First things first, we stop at the change tent
to make sure we have plenty of toonies and
fives for the performers. A magician tells our
daughter to pick a card, any card, and no
matter how closely we watch his hands, we
can’t see how he hands her back her eight
of spades after all his elaborate shuffling.
The kids crane their necks to watch the stilt
walkers in their colourful garb, before we
move through the happy throng toward
the circle show that is about to begin.
Anticipation fills the air as the street
performer draws an evergrowing audience
with dramatic promises of daring acts
high in the air to where the street performer
clowns on her high perch, teasing him about
the grey in his hair. The crowd roars with
laughter at her audacity and her skill, and
she responds by ratcheting up the nonsense
and the daring, fire flying through the air.
At the end of the performance, we hand the
beaming kids money to put in her hat and
laugh as they shyly approach their new hero.
It’s a beautiful sunny day, so we walk through
the cooling water sprinkler, kids clutching
their balloon animals and admiring each
other’s face painting – an elaborate tiger and
a sparkly ladybug. A visit to the food booths,
then it’s time for the next circle show. The
best part is, we can come back tomorrow for
more CentreFest, and there’s a full summer of
festivals and celebrations to look forward to.

My husband and I have come to Red Deer
to enjoy New Year’s Eve with family, and
now we’re all heading to a celebration. Not
just any celebration, mind you, this one is a
doubly festive event: it’s kicking off 2013 and
Red Deer’s Centennial year. We’ve come to a
birthday party for the city, an old-fashioned
skating party, complete with musical
fireworks.
We walk around the pavilion and get our
first good look at the event. Wow. We didn’t
expect anything like this – there must be
thousands of people, with lots wearing glow
stick necklaces, and it looks so fun! Hundreds
of skaters glide on the ponds, while people
fill the surrounding trails, enjoying hot
chocolate and dancing to the music. The
sounds of laughter and happiness fill the air
– along with the occasional scream of delight
as tobagganers scoot down nearby hills.
We quickly put our skates on and join the
happy skaters on the ice. The night air cools
crowd closes out the show and, when
it’s over, there’s a collective feeling that
everyone wants the fun to keep going.
And this is just a sample of the year-long party
that Red Deer will be hosting. I remember
seeing on the Red Deer Centennial website
that there will be dozens of celebrations all
year, with groups from across the community
getting in on the festive action. I’m intrigued
by the Homecoming weekend and the River
of Light events at the end of June, and the
Centennial calendar lists dozens of other
activities for the whole year, with everything
from a barn dance and a fall fair to festivals
and competitions. If this awesome night is any
indication, it sounds like a great time to be
in Red Deer – we’ll definitely have to make
some extra trips down to check things out.

Red Deer’s heritage isn’t a distant memory;
it’s a vibrant part of the buildings, parks and
art throughout the community. You can see
it, touch it and read about it as you make
your way through Red Deer. Red Deer will
celebrate its centennial birthday in 2013 –
and The City is planning a host of fun and
exciting community and corporate events to
celebrate this huge milestone. The Centennial
Celebrations will provide an opportunity to
not only celebrate Red Deer’s past, but also to
reference the present and envision the future.
At the turn of the century, Red Deer
experienced a surge of massive growth as
large numbers of settlers flooded into the
area to take up homesteads. In 1901, when
Red Deer was incorporated as a town, the
population stood at 343. By 1913, when
Red Deer was incorporated as a city; the
population had jumped to nearly 2,800. Today,
Red Deer’s population stands at 91,877 people
(2011 Census).
Among the centennial events will be the
planting of the Centennial Grove on March
25, a Homecoming Festival and River of Light
from June 29 to July 1, an Outdoor Barn
Dance on Little Gaetz Avenue on July 16
and an Old Fashioned Fall Fair on Sept. 21.

also excited to work with this instructor,
as I haven’t learned from her before. Part
of the fun of these courses is learning
new tricks and techniques from different
instructors, because each new method
contributes to the evolution of my skills.
I smile when I think back to my first course a
decade ago, when my instructor came into the
studio and energetically called out: “Who likes
to play with fire?!” It was the perfect introduction to glass blowing, which had piqued my interest since I had first started noticing unique,
hand-made glass pieces many years ago. At
that first weekend course, I started to learn
about safety and techniques right away and,
before long, I was creating my own pieces.

inspiration has come from a variety of places,
and I always challenge myself to develop my
skill and functionality, trying to equal the
perfection of machine-manufactured items

At this morning’s class, my instructor has led
the introductions and I meet my new partner
who I’ll be working with throughout the

these courses: you get to share your time

SAVOUR THE
MOMENT
This is a restaurant where they know wine;
if diners aren’t sure what to pair with
their meal, the staff is pleased to offer
knowledgeable suggestions. But we know
what we want – a bright Malbec to go with
our favourite appetizer. I’ve been thinking
about Bistecca Crostini all afternoon: grilled
sirloin steak with horseradish mayo and
arugula on toasted crostini. When our
friends devour it appreciatively, I can’t help
but smile smugly and say, “I told you so.”
Soft jazz music pipes through the room,
mixing with the muted laughter and
conversation from the neighbouring tables.
I smile to see the staff greet customers by
name; we know the chef knew it was us
when we ordered two extra crostinis so we
wouldn’t have to debate how to split them
up. I like sharing most of the time, but when
it comes to this appetizer, I’m less generous.
The others agonize over their entrees, but,
again, I know exactly what I’ve come for.
La Casa Pergola is known for a number
of signature dishes, including our friend’s
favourite, the savoury Spaghetti Bolognese
with hand-formed meatballs. But I’m craving
Ravioli Con Tartufo – ravioli stuffed with
cheese and topped with the chef’s brandy
cream sauce, finished with black truffles. It’s
rich and decadent, and the portion isn’t so
large I feel guilty about indulging. When the
waiter checks that everything is to our liking,
our response is to groan with happiness.
The weather has continued to hold, so we
can’t resist taking our specialty coffees
outside onto the two-tiered patio, where
we can watch the evening world go by from
inside an oasis of potted greenery entwined
with fairy lights. Breathing in the fresh
evening air, replete from a unique meal made
by people who love food as much as we do, I
can’t help but think that the song was right –
it’s summer time, and the living really is easy.

Although the lounge is equally appealing
ng
in a different way, tonight we choose to
o
dine in the restaurant, where the tabless
are secluded and, in some cases, separated
by screens or tucked into intimate nooks.
The lights are low, casting shadows on
the Italian statuary and art that give
the dining room at La Casa Pergola the
warmth and ambiance we’re looking for.

Red Deer Airport is located just off of Highway 2A – 8 kilometers south of Red Deer.
The Sheraton Red Deer Hotel provides 241
guestrooms and suites and 55,000 squarefeet of meeting space including a 34,000
square-foot Special Events Centre. “We host
some of the largest regional conferences
in Alberta,” says Lisa Francoeur, director
of sales & marketing. “Our Special Events
Centre is a beautiful room for trade shows
or elegant banquets up to 1,600 people.”
Check in to the iHotel 67 Street where
10 meeting rooms, fitness centre and day
spa make an ideal choice for the leisure
or business traveller alike or consider the
new Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites South, with
conference and meeting facilities for up to
500 people.
The Black Knight Inn Hotel caters to groups
from 4 to 400 for meetings, conferences,
trade shows, seminars and more. The Red
Deer Lodge offers 233 tastefully appointed
guest rooms, including 32 suites and 60
business class rooms that accompany 11
meeting rooms. The Quality Inn North Hill
features a wide range of 115 comfortable
guest rooms and 6 meeting rooms to
accommodate 3-300 attendees.
“Meeting in a larger city can be difficult to
plan an outing for a group with logistics
for transportation and costs of events,
but meeting in Red Deer, everything is 10
minutes away (at the most) and you’ll find
lots to do,” says Francoeur. “Cheer on the
Rebels at the ENMAX Centrium, take a
cruise on Sylvan Lake, enjoy a play at one
of our theatres, take a carriage ride at
Heritage Ranch, place your bet at Alberta
Downs or dance the night away at Billy
Bob’ss Country Dance Hall.”
