MINOT DAILY NEWS 2014 HOMETOWN HITS & MISSES PAGE 97 Ribfests cook up a crowd Ribfests have been a crowd pleaser in North Dakota for a number of years. Williston has held its Rockinʼ Ribfest on July 4 as part of the Williston Blast! celebration since 2009. This past year, there were 18 teams, each cooking 150 pounds of ribs. Susan McDonnell, events manager for the Williston Chamber of Commerce, said the ribfest is a big draw thatʼs grown in popularity. In 2013, it was reported ribbers cooked about 1,600 pounds of ribs. Ribfests go over big in the big towns. Bismarck has its Rip Roarinʼ Ribfest each June, and Fargo has its Happy Harryʼs Ribfest. But the events are just as popular in the small towns. Thereʼs the annual firemenʼs ribfest in Edinburg, Ribfest! in Rutland and additional ribfests that have been held in Walhalla, Grafton, Carrington and other small communities. One of the most popular small-town ribfests is the Best of the West Ribfest in Watford City each August, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce for about the past 10 years. Jessie Veeder Scofield, who has been involved in Watford Cityʼs ribfest planning, said past space constraints have limited the number of competitors to 20, but there is hope of expanding in the future. Competitors this year each cooked up 175 pounds and many did more to keep up with the diner demand. “We had been running out of ribs in previous years,” Scofield said. The oil boom and town growth have meant new companies and new teams getting involved, especially more residents with Southern roots who take their barbecuing seriously. Itʼs not the prize money that drives the competition, though. In the past few years, winning teams have donated prizes back to the chamber to support future ribfests. “They are in it to be involved with the community, to get out and do something fun in the summer. Itʼs more like a friendly competition for the businesses,” Scofield said. “Definitely, they want to win. But itʼs not about the money. Itʼs definitely about bragging rights.” Larry Barstad of Velva applies sauce to ribs at the Lilʼ Redneck Ribfest in Velva July 12. Jill Schramm/MDN Ribs Continued from Page 96 Force members from Minot, Kevin Metcalf, originally of Illinois, and Jim Godfrey, formerly of Boston. Bridges, a North Carolina native, said they stick with a similar recipe that came out of Texas for their ribs. “It’s really satisfying when somebody tells you how good it is. That’s the cherry on top,” Bridges said. The Q Crew hires out for private events, cooking whole hogs for birthday parties and as many as 400 ribs for a single event. In contrast, many teams in ribfest competitions are backyard hobbyists who enter the contests to promote the hometown. “Just wanted to support the local community. It’s p.r. for Velva,” said Dave Shock of the Gooseneck Implement team of Velva. Of course, they knew they had a pretty hot product with the recipe of co-worker Dean Martin. “He made us ribs at work, Shock said. “They were pretty darn good.” The judges thought so, too. The team’s ribs took first place. Watching over their yellow and green smoker were the Bison Buddies, a Velva team made up of North Dakota State University Bison fans Johnny Johnson and Randy Hauck of Velva and Jerry Schweitzer of Minot. Johnson described the team as in the contest to support Velva – and also possibly in over their heads next to some of the pro barbecuers in the competition. He and his team members smoke deer sausage every year so figured this wouldn’t be so hard, Johnson said. They tested out some rib recipes ahead of time. “The first one was mediocre,” Johnson said, noting that they perfected a recipe only the week before the contest. He said they planned to follow the recipe and “cross our fingers they turn out good. ... If they turn out anything like last week, the public will like them.” The Hog-er-up team of Matthias Hanson from Surrey and his father, Clint, from Des Lacs came to the Lil’ Redneck Ribfest to meet up with neighbors and friends and enjoy the weekend. Matthias Hanson said it’s the attraction of a small-town event that prompted to them participate. “We are winging it,” he said, noting the borrowed grill and small smoker. “We just thought we would give it a whirl.” Ribfest competitors are a dedicated bunch, showing up for the Velva event shortly after 6 a.m. to get the cooking started. They watched over smokers and applied barbecue rubs during the countdown to serving judges at 4 p.m. and the public at 5 p.m. The incentive was prizes ranging from $100 to $500 for ribs that carried the best presentation, taste and tenderness. Nearby, the team sponsored by Farmers Union Oil in Velva had nine people working. Greg Schmaltz of Scheresky Ag in Max and Paul Huesers of Max were joined by the Scheresky Ag’s young, energetic, agricultural workers from South Africa. Schmaltz and Huesers made separate recipes and planned to decide later which to give the judges. Schmaltz said he obtained his special barbecue sauce from a supplier in Rochester, Minn., by having a friend from Wisconsin pick it up and deliver it to another friend in Sioux Falls, S.D., who brought it to Velva just in time. The staff at Farmers Union Oil converted a cooler into a large smoker for the team. Wayne Bauer and son, Rick, of Velva MINOT DAILY NEWS 2014 built their Monster Q team’s smoker about three weeks before the Velva ribfest, where it had its debut. Although it was their first time in a ribfest, they were one of the most experienced teams in the Velva event. They said they’ll sometimes cook a whole pig or 70 pounds of ribs just for fun and invite friends and neighbors. Vedaa and co-organizer Cory Schmaltz, general manager at Farmers Union Oil, cooked up the idea to host a ribfest in Velva after taking in similar events in other communities. Although not a competitor, Vedaa prepared additional ribs to have extra on hand for the crowd. It wouldn’t be a ribfest without plenty of other activities, and Velva’s Midsummer Night’s Jam had plenty to offer. It featured a pedal tractor pull, Model T assembly race by the Bismarck Pioneer Auto Club, Army National Guard display, classic and clunker car show, karaoke, street vendors and late-night concert. PAGE 106 HOMETOWN HITS & MISSES MINOT DAILY NEWS 2014 Southgate Crossing a success By KIM FUNDINGSLAND Staff Writer kfundingsland @minotdailynews.com Kim Fundingsland/MDN Minot has been known as the “Magic City” since the early days when the route of the railroad led to Minot magically rising from the plains and forever changing the landscape. Today Minoters are reminded of that old magic when they see impressive new developments being constructed where farmland existed a few months previously. Southgate Crossing on the city’s southwest edge is a vivid example of remarkable transformation from vacant prairie to a thriving business and residential area added to the city. Roers Construction of Fargo met a need in Minot with an impressive 50-acre development situated along increasingly busy Sixteenth Street Southwest. Larry Nygard, Roers vice-president, has been over-seeing the ambitious building project on the edge of the booming Bakken oil field of western North Dakota. “When we started looking at the Bakken in 2009, what we liked about Minot is that it had an impact from the oil. It had that going for it, but also had the other aspects of a thriving community,” said Nygard. “It has regional shopping, good health care and draws from all over the area. The college makes it good. The railroad creates a lot of activity and the agriculture, of course, is great. Even without the Bakken we thought Minot was a good place to be.” Businesses thought so, too. Southgate Crossing attracted Cash Wise Foods, Gordman’s Department Store, Shoe Carnival and Petco among others. All were new businesses in Minot. Along the frontage road where Southgate Crossing’s strip mall is located several other businesses have sprung up ranging from a bank to restaurants. “Obviously proximity to Dakota Square Mall made it a popular See CROSSING — Page 107 MINOT DAILY NEWS 2014 HOMETOWN HITS & MISSES PAGE 107 Kim Fundingsland/MDN Several large apartment buildings have sprung up in the Southwest Crossing area, offering new living space in a rapidly developing section of Minot. Crossing Continued from Page 106 place to build,” said Nygard. “It had good street infrastructure and traffic flow. Minot is benefiting like the rest of the Bakken, business and residential. The project takes advantage of both of those opportunities.” To support the new development and help address a need for more housing in growing Minot, Roers constructed several large apartment buildings immediately west of Southgate’s business mall. According to Nygard, about 370 new apartment units were built. “New businesses follow the rooftops,” explained Nygard. “When the oil patch started, sleeping included camper and tents and everything else. The need was met somewhat by hotels and motels and then began a transition into apartments and then single-family housing. The retailers watch how many people have moved to town. That’s when it shows up on the radar of retailers and they start landing in your community.” The retailers at Southgate today had no connection to Minot as recently as 2009. They were watching, waiting for development trends to trigger action. New businesses have found Southgate to be a hit with customers and expect business only to get better in the days ahead. “The development was designed to meet a specific need,” said Nygard. “We watch the market. Minot’s got a good future and we are certainly looking for- ward to doing more projects in the city.” Among the projects slated to get under way at Southgate yet in 2014 is a huge one – the building of a Hilton Garden Inn, which will include a major conference center. Another project is the construction of a climate controlled self-storage and office rental center that will be located west of the Baymont Inn. Nygard described Minot as going through “growing pains” in regard to development, but has seen rapid growth spurts in other communities result in similar obstacles to be overcome. “Dickinson, Williston, Watford City, Killdeer, Glendive, Sidney. To a letter all those communities deal with the same issues. Everybody has an adjustment period. How could things not be maxed out?” said Nygard. Roers made several efforts to expedite construction at Southgate Crossing, including funding a traffic light intersection on Sixteenth Street at the northeast corner of the complex and creating a new exit and entrance for residents of nearby Green Acres. Nygard described the Green Acres improvement as a “side benefit” to the city. As for working and building in Minot, Nygard said all went surprisingly smooth. “We’re very happy about it. I wish they all went like that. We were blessed with good timing, good location and a city staff that really wanted to see it happen. They knew the need,” said Nygard. “It was the right use for the right location and everybody got on board and supported it.” 200% Best Price Guarantee on Tires! Tires & Service is Our Business!! Theater revival Minot AFB theater returns to showing movies By ELOISE OGDEN Regional Editor [email protected] MINOT AIR FORCE BASE – The theater at Minot Air Force Base has had a revival. Janine V. Ursin, Food Management Professional Central Region Food Court manager with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service at Minot AFB, said the base was reopened for movies on Feb. 14. She said the reason it was reopened for movies was because of “public outcry, to uplift morale on Minot AFB.” The theater had been closed down for showing movies for one year, Ursin said. However, it was used for other events. “Everything has been upgraded to include a digital projector, including 3D See THEATER — Page 111 MINOT DAILY NEWS 2014 HOMETOWN HITS & MISSES Grover, a character with the “Sesame Street/USO” traveling show goes into the audience during a performance at the Minot Air Force Base Theater in June. She said the theater also has the ability to accept credit/debit cards. She said movies are shown Thursday and Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. “We now get first-run movies (releases same as commercial theaters), free pre-screenings for the military, and most movies before DVD release. Our free screenings have included: “300: Rise of an Empire,” “Godzilla” and “Blended.” The theater is operated by the Army & Air Force Exchange Services’ Food Court manager. Minot AFB has had a theater for many years. This facility is also available for Commander’s Calls, meetings, training periods, stage shows and other special gatherings. Construction plans for a new theatre have been completed for 1965.” Two years later the guide said: “The base is fortunate enough to have two beautiful theaters. The Northern, the newest of the two has a 500-seat capacity and is airconditioned. The Prairie, the oldest theater, has a 300-seat capacity. “Both theaters feature many good movies at a nominal fee. There are two showings every night with matinees on Saturday and Sunday. The matinee on Saturday is usually a good show for the children. “Schedules of shows to come and their times are published in the base newspaper, ‘The Sentry.” The existing theater is located near JR Rockers. A second theater was located east of the existing one. Ursin said the reaction to the revival of the theater showing movies has been “very positive – great feedback from customers because of the upgrade with the new digital system.” City of Westhope Eloise Ogden/MDN Sponsored by the Theater PAGE 113 Basin Service Company Roustabout & Pumping Services DIAMOND B TRUCKING 10267 Hwy. 835, Westhope, ND 245-6423 55 Main Street, Westhope, ND 58793 701-245-6143 701-245-6149 (fax) Farmers Union Oil Company of Westhope Souris • Bottineau 25 Railway Ave. East Westhope, ND 58793 Bottineau: 701-228-2611 Souris: 701-243-6413 Station: 701-245-6433 Artz Insurance 115 Main, Box 209 Westhope, ND 58793 245-6665 Cell 263-1666 Fax 245-6664 [email protected] PAGE 114 HOMETOWN HITS & MISSES MINOT DAILY NEWS 2014 A groundbreaking ceremony was held in May for the addition and renovation project for South Prairie School, south of Minot. Andrea Johnson/MDN Schools booming like Bakken By ANDREA JOHNSON Staff Writer [email protected] Signs of the booming Bakken can be seen everywhere you look these days. When it comes to schools, that growth is most evident in the portable classrooms that are scattered around brick and mortar buildings, intended to educate the overflow population of schools that are now bursting at the seams. That growth was a problem that wasn’t anticipated just a few short years ago, when school administrators were warning that the state faced dwindling school enrollment numbers. When the new Washington Elementary in Minot, a remodeled medical clinic, was opened at the end of 2007, there were several empty classrooms. Now that school has nine portable classrooms located outside its doors and a 10th classroom rented by the school district in an adjoining school building. Soon, though, some of those portable classrooms will be replaced with gleaming new elementary, middle and high schools, which will be a hit with students and teachers alike. See SCHOOLS — Page 115 MINOT DAILY NEWS 2014 HOMETOWN HITS & MISSES PAGE 115 A group of ceremonial participants use golden shovels to “break ground” during the May groundbreaking ceremony for the addition and renovation project at South Prairie School, 10 miles south of Minot. Andrea Johnson/MDN Schools Continued from Page 114 In Minot, middle school students now attend the brand new Erik Ramstad Middle School in northwest Minot, completed last December. It replaced the old school that was destroyed in the Souris River flood of 2011. Elementary students attend school in the newly remodeled and expanded Longfellow Elementary and at Lewis and Clark Elementary, which was also expanded to provide room for the growing population on the north side. Voters approved a $39.5 million bond issue in April that will pay for more school construction. Two new elementary school additions – one at Edison Elementary and the other at Perkett Elementary – are scheduled to be com- pleted in time for the 2015-2016 school year and an entirely new elementary school is to be built in southeast Minot which will open in 2016. Superintendent Mark Vollmer said the growth is exciting. Growth is also continuing in other schools around the Minot area. The Minot Catholic Schools just completed a classroom addition that provided more space for both its elementary and high school students. At South Prairie, 10 miles south of Minot, voters said “yes” to a $12 million bond issue that is paying for construction of a new high school addition. Superintendent Wayne Stanley said reaction to the new high school has been highly positive. The community of South Prairie has a strong identity and both students and parents like the idea of having their own high school and no longer paying tuition for high school students to be educated in neighboring school districts. At the groundbreaking ceremony in May, students Jackson Lindbo and Lilee Friesen said they were looking forward to attending high school at South Prairie with all of their friends. Lilee, who lives farther away than the other students, was looking forward to having a shorter bus ride to school. No other K-8 school district in the state has added a new high school since the 1920s, so South Prairie is breaking new ground in that way as well. When the new high school at South Prairie opens in 2015-2016, it should have about 50 students to start out with. More students will likely attend the school in coming years. South Prairie isn’t the only K-8 school adding a new high school. Nedrose voters approved an $18 million bond issue earlier this year and are building a new middle and high school that will be located about a mile and a half from the current elementary school. Superintendent Charles Miller said it is a positive because, like South Prairie, it will allow Nedrose to have its own identity. Older kids who are already established in other schools may not want to return, but Miller said younger students will. The new high school will be able to accommodate up to 360 children. Miller said the new school will be one of the largest Class B schools in the area, smaller only than Des Lacs-Burlington. Principals, teachers and students alike seem to agree that all the new growth and construction is a real “hit.” • Cash Wise Is Here For You 24 Hours A Day 7 Days A Week! • Full Service Meat & Seafood Counter Featuring Certified Hereford Beef • Farm Fresh Produce • Full Service Deli Department • Full Line Of Fresh Baked Goods • Cash Wise Liquor Featuring Thousands Of Wines, Beers, Craft Beers & Liquors • More Ways To Save Throughout The Entire Store Cash Wise brings you We buy by the truckload.
