the monochromatic yarns, outline rectangular
blocks in the uniform, formal pattern. The vertical bars are raised to produce a ribbed effect
that adds a pleated appearance to the plain
seat inserts. The raised ribs, together with the
pair of dots made by bright metallic thread in
each block, give a 3-dimensional appearance.
A soil-resistant treatment is applied.
Fluted vinyl-For the upper bolster areas has
a narrow pattern produced by the darker ribs.
The material is a lamination of thick vi nyl
surface layers and a knit jersey backing.

COMET INSTRUMENT PANEL
The Comet instrument panel and cluster are
completely new for 1964 to provide rich modern
appearance with convenience and features
normally found in more expensive cars.
Full instrumentation-Four large easy-to-read
gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, amperes and
temperature are mounted in circular housings
directly in front of driver-two on each side of
the 120.mph speedometer.
Convenient controls-lgnition-starter switch location at right of steering column affords extra
convenience. Left of steering column on instrument panel lower edge is a new remote control
for left air vent-a push-pull knob. Easy-working heater-defroster controls are on lower panel
at right of steering column.
Unified design-All elements of the instrument
panel and cluster appear as integral, built-in
components. The instrument panel sheetmetal
is welded in part of the body structure extending full width between the windshield pillars.

The Comet Cyclone 2-door Hardtops will be
available with 13 solid-color exteriors including
the new Pecan Frost (medium buff metallic) and
six all-vinyl interior schemes. The black or
white vinyl-covered roof, available as an option,
is available with all 13 colors.
Exterior paint specifications for 1964 Comet
and Mercury vehicles provide for triple coats of
Super-Enamel finish in all colors.

ENGINE-The 210-hp Comet Cyclone Super
289 V-8 with 4-barrel carburetor and chromefinish engine dress-up is standard. This is the
regular-gas version of the 289-cubic-inch highperformance V-8 that made Comet the Wtld
100,000-Mile Durability Champion in the Daytona Durability Run. Dynamometer tests and

CONDITIONING
This 1964 Comet air conditioner runs quieily,
and makes a better looking
installation. lts bright full face panel is designed
to harmonize with the Comet instrument pinel.
Comet air conditioner performance-Comet,s
air conditioner is a high-capacity, top-perform_
ing unit that can maintain car temperatures
between 7O' and 75" tor highway driving in
100" weather. lt can keep car temperature in
the low 80's in city traffic and lO0. weather.
The Comet air conditioner is designed and
engineered for Comet sedans, converiibles and
station wagons. lt is available for factory or
dealer installation. ln operation, the air conditioner dehumidifies as it cools so only cool,
dry air is distributed.
The 1964 Comet air conditioner is an inde9o9ls. efficiently,

pendent cooling unit with rotary controls and
adjustable registers on the face, plus one on
each end. lt is available as optional extra-cost
equipment, either dealer- or factory-installed.
Dual blower wheels are quiet running, precision-balanced assemblies which deliv6i up to
250 cubic feet per minute. The 3-speed control
provides low, medium or high volume.
Registers can be positioned for spot cooling of
front compartment or general cooling.
Mechanical elements-compressor, receiver
and condenser-are in the engine compartment. Other parts are in the housing mounted
under the instrument panel center.

installed with the air conditioner-.

High-reliability headlamps of new design for
longer service life are installed in 1964 Comets.
These are the same 5/4" sealed beams as in
other Lincoln-Mercury vehicles.
The outboard lamps, with SO-watt elements at
center of each bulb, provide low-beam illumination. All four lamps serve for high-beam lighting
with 15O-watt total power-5O/6 greater than in
competitive cars with single headlamps.
High-reliability small bulbs for taillight, stoplight and turn signals are longer lasting type
with heavy filament and filament mounting.
Multiple taillamps-Predominant in the rear
styling is the multiple taillight theme with 3
round lights on each side set in a dark rectangular field. The center housing is for the optional
back-up lights, making

The multiple system provides 4 taillights and stop lights,
and dual turn signals for each side. Comet station wagons

Gomet interior lighting is engineered'for
safety and convenience. lnstrument panel
light intensity can be adjusted by rotating

Other electrical equipment :
lntegral fuse panel is mounted on the headlamp switch where it is available for easy
inspection and service. The handy fuse block,
which can be removed from its mounting in a
moment, includes fuse for parking lights, taillights, stoplights, license plate light and dome
light.
Circuit breaker in the headlamp wiring system
protects the main light circuit. The independent
headlamp circuit would not be affected by any
shorts or flaws in other wiring circuits.
lgnition switch-Terminals of the ignition
switch are buried inside the switch housing to
prevent tampering. Removing ignition switch
from its mounting requires use of key. Comet's
ignition switch is key-operated with the starter
terminal at extreme right position.
Multiple wire connectors including as many as
eight circuits are used in Comet's electrical
system. Each of the gang connectors interlocks
only with its own mate. lt is impossible to mismatch the connectors.

ceives an air test for possible coolant leaks with
6 pounds air pressure. lf a leak is discovered,
the engine is immediately removed from prod

All Comet engines are tested for balance with
electronic devices at the factory while running
under their own power. After being run at the
factory, the engine timing and idle speed are
adjusted for customer driving. Because of this
the former 1,OOo-mile service isn't required.

New 55-amp.-hr. battery is standard equipment
for all 1964 Comets. This more powerf ul battery
wilh 37/o higher rating than the 40-amp.-hr.
1963 battery can mean longer service life and
improved cold-weather starting performance.
Cooling system-Full-length water jackets,
pressurized, down-f low radiator. The 190degree thermostat increases engine efficiency
by preventing harmful sludge deposits associated with lower operating temperatures.
Full-vacuum distributor-gets commands for
spark advance and retard through a vacuum
line to the carburetor.
Valve train for the in-line Comet "6" has hydraulic valve lifters, pressure-lubricated rocker
arm shaft, and rotating-type valves which are
free to turn slightly with each opening and
closing. Aluminized intake valves and precisionmolded austenitic steel exhaust valves receive
anti-corrosion treatment for valve stems for
smoother operation and durability. Valve stem
diameter is increased I3/" to .34" for greater
strength and increased wear surface.
Hydraulic valve lifters for the Comet "6" are
actuated by high-lift cams. These hydraulic
tappets utilize high-pressure oil to keep the
lifter continuously in contact with its cam and
valve lifter body. Plungers in the hydraulic
tappets are chrome-plated for greater resist'
ance to wear and corrosion.
Crankcase emission red uction system re'cycles
blow-by gases tothe induction system for return
to the combustion chambers for burning.

"6" Carburetors-The
single-venturi
carburetors for the 170- and 2OO-cu.-in. Comet
"6" engines are tailored to fuel requirements
of the two engines.
New features for 1964 include a new choke
body with larger air volume, and improved fuel
discharge nozzle and well tube for better
constant-speed driving feel, and improved
float bowl venting for hot idle stability.
Automatic choke is standard. Water flowing
through the carburetor mounting base serves
to stabilize temperature of the fuel-air mixture.
During warm-up, hot water piped directly from
cylinder head passages warms mounting block.
Other carburetor features:

COMET V.B ENGINE FEATURES
Gomet purchasers can be confident about the quality
and durability of the precision-cast alloy-iron parts in
1964 Comets. All Comet engines are built with piecisioncast alloy-iron cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and intake
and exhaust manifolds.
An outstanding advantage of alloy iron is its versatility.
After casting, it is easy to machine 0r process, yet can
stand high temperatures. lt has good expansion and

it ideal for cylinder walls and valve guides. Free graphite
affords natural lubrication... also soaks up and retains
oil to provide minute pockets of oil on the surface.
Carburetor Dual Air lntakes
The Comet V-8's are well ,,over-square" with
large-diameter pistons traveling short strokes.
The short strokes mean lower friction and less
piston travel per car mile.
Made compact through careful design and use
of precision-cast parts, the Comet V-S's measure only 20 inches over the manifolds. The
generator, power steering hydraulic pump and
air conditioner compressor are mounted close
to the cylinder block to conserve space.
Cylinder block-Alloy-iron 90' V-8 cylinder
block is precision-cast with walls of uniform
thickness. A shallow casting, the crankcase
extends approxi mately to cra n kshaft centerli ne.
Grankshaft-Made of nodular iron and precision-cast for high strength with minimum
weight, the crankshaft is a 5-main-bearing design. Crankshaft has 6 integral counterweights
plus an external counterweight at each end.
Vibration damper is installed on the front end
of the crankshaft. This rubber-floated torsional
vibration damper with a rubber ring between
the inner and outer steel rings, serves to
counteract crankshaft vibrations for smoother,
quieter drive line performance.
Pistons-Slipper-type 3-ring design precisionmachined, aluminum alloy castings, with imbedded steel struts for autothermic expansion
control. Tin plating prevents scuffing of pistons
and cylinder walls during break-in. The top
compression ring is chrome-plated and the
2nd compression ring is phosphate-coated.
The lower oil ring has dual chrome-plated rails
and a steel expander spring.
Cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds are
made with the same precision-casting techniques as the cylinder block.
Precision casting prouides large intake and exhaust passages for Comet engines. Illustrated, is
Comet V-8 cylinder head with wedge-shape combustion chambers and alternate anangement of
intake and exhaust ualues.
Comet V-8 engine performance and efficiency
are improved with selective heating of incoming air for carburetor. The heating system
includes a jacket surrounding the right.side
exhaust manifold, high- and low-level air intakes, and a temperature-controlled valve.
For warm-up the upper intake is closed. Air enters through
the lower intake, and picks up heat as it passes around
the exhaust manifold enroute to the carburetor air filter.
After warm-up the lower intake is closed and all air goes
directly through the upper intake to the carburetor air filter.
The temperature-controlled valve automatically
selects
heated, mixed or unheated air. Heating the incoming air
during warm-up reduces the hazard and annoyance of
stalls caused by carburetor icing.
Additional heating of fuel-air mixture is provided in the
intake manifold. Exhaust gas pulsing through a passage
between the cylinder banks warms the intake manifold
directly below the carburetor.

Comet V-B Carburetors
2-barrel carburetor lor the Comet Cyclone 260 V-8 is
dual down-draft unit with booster venturis inside each of
the two large venturis for increasing vacuum at slow
speeds. Automatic choke has exhaust- and water-heat for
more precise control.

Valve train has quiet, self-adjusting hydraulic
valve lifters actuated by a precision-molded,
high-lift camshaft. Light-weight rocker arms,
made of precision-molded nodular iron, are
individually mounted on independent ball
studs. This mounting eliminates the usual
rocker arm shaft and retainers to obtain a
reduction in reciprocating friction and inertia
forces for improved engine efficiency.
Hydraulic valve lifters are actuated by the highlift cams on the precision-cast nodular iron
camshaft. The hydraulic tappets utilize highpressure oil from the engine lubrication system
to keep each lifter continuously in contact with
its cam and valve-lifter body. Plungers in the
hydraulic tappets are chrome-plated for greater
resistance to wear and corrosion.

Cyclone 260 V-8.

MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS
3-speed mpnual transmission installed with the
Comet 17fi rr6tt engine has helical-cut gears
with forged-bronze synchronizers for 2nd and
3rd gears. Anti-friction bearings contribute to
quiet, long life and high efficiency. Ball bearings at the front of the case carry the main
drive gear. Main shaft has needle bearings at
front, ball bearings at rear, and a bushing at
end of the transmission case extension.
Life-of-car fluid if installed in all Comet transmissions at the factory. The transmission oil
doesn't need periodic draining. The owner is
expected to maintain the fluid at proper level
up to the filler plug.

The V-8 powered Comet passenger cars and station wagons
now can be ordered with the all-new 4-speed manual
transmission* which went into production in December, 1963.
This Ford-designed, Ford-made all-synchronized 4-speed

The 4-speed all-synchronized manual transmission
affords the ultimate in flexibility, performance and driving
pleasure. 3rd gear may be used as a cruising gear on hills
and in city traffic. With the 4-speed transmission, the driver
can operate the engine nearer peak power and torque more
of the time to obtain maximum performance and handling
through the gears.
ln the all-synchronized transmission, the rotation speed of
the synchronizer sleeves is synchronized while the sleeves
are being engaged to permit shifting up or down without
clashing regardless of engine speed. Driver can accelerate
from lst to 4th gear with synchronized smoothness and
decelerate, using progressive lower gears without clashing
in any ratio.

REAR SUSPENSION
Comet's rear suspension incorporates fully
insulated semi-elliptical leaf'type rear
springs and double-acting hydraulic shock
absorbers. Several improvements contribute to better ride, wide-stance stability and
over-all performance.

and 2r/2" wide. Asymmetrical mounting of
springs has the shorter, stiffer part in front

2-inch rubber bushing in front hanger of

INTRODUCING MERCURY'S ALL-NEW 4-SPEED TRANSMISSION*
Mercury passenger cars can now be ordered with the new
all-synchronized -speed manual transmission* which went
into production late in December, 1963.
This
Ford-designed, Ford-made transmission-the industry's newest and finest-incorporates all of the engineering advancements ol Mercury's 3-speed all-svnchionized manual transmission, plus- unique features of a
4-speed manual transmisston.
The transmission is made with two different sets of gear
ratios.and-with torque-c-apacities tailored to the high torque
output of Mercury's 390- and 427 -cu.-in. V-8,s. Hi-ghlights:
o All-new design with precision-machined gear
case.
Mercury's rl-speed manual transmission has the international shift pattern. The finger-operated fork on the shift
lever must be raised to move the shift lever into reverse.
The fully synchronized forward gears are in constant mesh
with th.e countershaft gear. Forward-gear changes are
accomplished. with synchronizer sleeves which permlt quick
shifts, minimize gear clashing and permit dowrishifting into
any geat while car is moving. Recommended downshift
sequences are:

CUSTOMER BENEFITS:

transmission. The 4-speed manual transmission can be downshifted at various engine speeds for braking with the engine.

tailoring of engine torque to transmission torque multiplication
by each of the four close-ratio gears.

has the centerline of the pinion gear ZYa,'below center of
ring gear in deep-offset position. This permits a lower driveshaft and smaller hump in the passenger compartment.
Features and customer benefits: The rear axle is semifloating type. The pinion gear is straddle-mounted with
two roller-bearing bushings in front of the pinion and one
behind. The straddle-mounting maintains more accurate
ring-gear tooth alignment for smoother, quieter operation
wheel is on solid surface and the other on slippery surface,
both wheels turn. With conventional rear axles, the wheel
on solid surface would stand still while the wheel on slippery surface would spin. The power-transfer rear axle is a
Ford Motor Company design with limited-slip clutch plates
in the rear axle. 0ptional for all models.

Tubular drive shafts are precision-balanced with

1964 Mercurys are built with
the heavy-duty (police-car type) rear axles. These have
heavy-duty rear axle shafts and shaft bearings. Axles
installed with the 3-speed and -speed manual transmissions have a 4-pinion differential gear carrier;'
weights welded to outside of tube.

Single filler plug is provided for adding lubricant as
needed to maintain proper oil level. Draining is not necessary for normal operation.
