History
According to tradition a man called Luan kept
a hostelry close to the ford and acted as a
guide to travellers who needed to venture
across the torrent of the River Shannon.
In time, the place came to be known as Ath
Luain: the ford of Luan. The town also
became a religious centre and a strategic site
for control of the river crossing with the most
recognised battle, The Siege of Athlone taking
place in 1691.
Modern Times
Athlone today is a thriving town with a
population reaching 25,000. A broad range of
amenities and services are available.
The development of the town in recent years
has seen the town grow in size and strength as
she looks for city status, with Athlone Institute
of Technology, Golden Island Shopping
Centre, investment by several multinational
companies and the most recent Athlone Town
Centre Development, which will see Athlone
as the largest shopping destination outside of
Dublin.
