It’s Getting chilly out
Girls’ Basketball Recap

with it huddled masses of
shivering, underdressed students
waiting to come in the building in
the morning. We all know
students often make clothing
choices for looks, not for
comfort. Please be sure you child

gloves/mittens – as the
temperatures continue to drop.

Education Department reminds

until the end of October. Students

The 8th grade Lincoln Lions girl's team had a terrific season finishing with a
record of 11-3. The girls played hard all season long and demonstrated a
positive, competitive attitude throughout the past 2 months. This talented
group ended their outstanding 2-year career at Lincoln with a combined
record of 23-4. They also finished second in the Grove tournament the last
two years as well.
Coach Tebo says, “It has been my pleasure to have worked with such a
great group of girls. I wish them all the best in high school as many of them
will continue their basketball careers at the next level.”
We also introduced a new junior varsity team this year. Coach Romey said,
“The JV team also played well as a unit. We had great team chemistry and
were especially good on defense and at sharing the ball. Lots of good passes
made throughout the year. Our overall record was 12-2. We split with
South. Our 2 losses came by 1 point to Chippewa, and 2 points to South,
both last second nail biters. We came in 2nd place to South at the Grove
Tournament.”
For the first time ever our team had 6th grade players ... 5 of them

Team News
Some of our eighth grade students are learning a unique lesson about world issues and economics.
Earlier this year, the students of Team 8-2 learned about a non-profit organization called Kiva. Kiva's
mission is “to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty". By using the Internet, Kiva allows
people to make loans of ($25 or more) to borrowers who would like to start or continue to build their
own businesses. Most entrepreneurs on Kiva come from impoverished countries where small loans are
not readily available or have extremely high interest rates.
Students spent the first day discussing the cycle of poverty, loans, and microfinance. On the second
day, students (some individually and some in groups) researched and chose their loan recipients. Over
the course of the school year, students will monitor their recipients' success and have their loans paid
back through the website. Once a loan is paid in full, students will choose to either keep their money
or re-loan it to another entrepreneur.

District & School Report Cards for 2013
The District and individual School Report Cards for 2013 prepared by the State of Illinois will be
available on the District 64 website on October 31. The annual reports include a wide variety of
information about our students, the instructional setting, finances, academic performance, performance
on state assessments, and adequate yearly progress. Printed copies of the report cards are available on
request by phoning the Department of Student Learning at 847-318-4300. The website link

Office Reminders
Lately, we have seen a marked increase in the number of students late for school. Students begin
entering the building at 7:58. If a student arrives after the start of homeroom at 8:05, he/she is
considered tardy. Students with three or more tardies will receive disciplinary consequences, so please
be sure your child is leaving for school on time.
When notifying the office about an absence, please call the office no later than 8:30 AM the day
of the absence. You can call the office at any time and leave a voicemail if necessary. We kindly ask you
not notify teachers or the office about absences via e-mail, as they may not be seen until later in the day. It is
imperative we account for all our students first thing in the morning. We greatly appreciate your help.

Cross Country recap
Our cross-country runners have enjoyed another successful season. Coaches Ms. Schayer and Ms. Dabe were proud of
the team. They were impressed by the improvements students made and the support they showed each other over the
course of the six-week season. Many veteran runners returned who were joined by a large number of new students,
many of whom were running competitively for the first time. Lincoln runners wrapped up the season successfully by
taking first place in four out of the six over all races at our Oct. 15th Conference meet at Friendship. Ms. Schayer and
Ms. Dabe especially thank all the parents and family members who volunteered to help both home and away and to all
the families who came out to cheer and support our runners. Keep running and see you next fall!

District 64 Board of Education Invites Input on Superintendent Search
through Survey and October 29 Community Forum
The Board of Education of Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 is inviting all members of the
District 64 community to participate in the search process for a new school superintendent
either in person at a public forum on Tuesday, October 29 or by completing a survey online.
The Board has launched a national search for a new superintendent to replace Dr. Philip
Bender, who is leaving at the end of the 2013-14 school year. The Board is working with BWP &
Associates to facilitate the search.
Board President Anthony Borrelli states: "Community input into the decision process is vitally
important to the search. Participation will provide the Board with the composite representation
of the thoughts, wishes and expectations that the community demands of the new
Superintendent who as the Chief Operating Officer of the District will help guide the conduct of
the District as it teaches and develops our children."
A public forum will be held on Tuesday, October 29 from 7:00 p.m. to approximately 7:45 p.m.
at Emerson Middle School, 8101 N. Cumberland, Niles, and will be facilitated by BWP
representatives.
The online survey may be submitted at any time through Monday, November 4. The link to the
survey is available from the District 64 website (www.d64.org).
The survey asks respondents to select the three most significant strengths of District 64 as well
as the three most important issues or concerns in the next five years. Respondents are asked to
select the three most important skills they would like to see in a new superintendent along with
the three most important characteristics he or she should exhibit. In addition, the survey invites
respondents to rate how important 15 different experiences would be in the new
superintendent’s background, ranging from previous work as a superintendent, administrator
or classroom teacher to experience in technology, strategic planning or finance.
Several smaller gatherings also are being scheduled on October 29 for District 64 employees,
parent organization leaders and student groups as well as Park Ridge and Niles civic,
community and youth organizations.
The search firm will compile information from the meetings and surveys to present a
Leadership Profile to the Board of Education at its meeting on Monday, November 18 at 7:30
p.m. at Carpenter School, 300 N. Hamlin, Park Ridge. The report also will be posted to the
District 64 website; a video of the meeting will be available.

Discussion on Superintendent Search – The Board of Education conducted an in-depth planning session
with its administrative search firm, BWP & Associates, on the search to identify a successor to current
Superintendent Philip Bender, who will be leaving District 64 at the end of the 2013-14 school year. The
Board developed a timeline for the many steps in the search process, including nationwide outreach to
prospective candidates; opportunities for community input via an online survey and in person focus
groups tentatively scheduled for the last week of October; and preparation of a leadership profile
summarizing community input by mid-November. The Board also identified a timeline for working with
the search firm to review semi-finalists in mid-December, and to identify finalists in early 2014. Board
members also worked with the firm to develop general parameters for the search; reviewed the search
firm’s contract; and discussed the use of additional candidate assessments along with reference and
background checks.
