PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
After two years as your president, Harold has
stepped down from that position but will stay
on the board for one year as Past President.
Thanks Harold for all your work and for staying
on to complete 10 years on the board and to
help us in the transition. Harold was busy with
preparations for the 36th annual Gentleman’s
Ben Kromand Viking Stag on September 30th. It was a great
success with a total sellout again and a record
President
number of syndicate tickets also sold. Thanks
to Peter & Eli for the great food and to all the other volunteers
for their help in making the event the best ever.
The annual general meeting was held on Sept. 21st and
in addition to the normal business matters the shareholders
confirmed the election to the board of Rita Rasmussen, Michelle
Ambrose and Lise Goemans who had been appointed by the
directors during the year. Jens Laursen, who has done such a
great job heading up the Stampede float committee along with
normal board duties for the last 3 years, was elected for a new
2 year term. It was with regret that we accepted Karen Olsen’s
resignation after 10 years of dedicated service as Secretary
on the board and her work on the News Letter.

Concern was expressed about our inability to offer
scholarships this year because the time frame between the
casinos for which we are eligible, had been lengthened. The
funds for the 2011 casino will be received in November and
steps will be taken to ensure that sufficient funds are set aside
in the future to insure continuity of scholarships in the coming
years. We extend a special thanks to Jens Lehmann and his
group of volunteers who made it possible for us to receive
these funds again.
We are still looking for additional board members and as
Harold outlined in last month’s news letter, non Danes who
may wish to provide us with the benefit of their knowledge, can
acquire a Class A share and sit on the board. Karen Glowa in
1992 and Harold Ager in 2009 & 2010 served as Presidents
and Bill Smetheram has served as Treasurer since 2002 under
these regulations. Please contact us if you are interested.
We hope you attended and enjoyed the Octoberfest and
participated in the Children’s Halloween party and will check
out the dates for other events coming up at your club.
This is the last chance I will have to wish you, in print, a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year with your family, in your club
and in your homes.

Stampede Breakfast
July 16, 2011
Another successful breakfast was held on Saturday July 16th.
A large crowd enjoyed the event on the warm sunny morning.
We cooked a huge amount of sausages and pancakes! A great
team of volunteers helped with the setting up of tables, chairs
and grills, cooking and serving the breakfast and cleaning up
afterward.
A big thank you goes to Knud and Barb Thisted, Orville and
Fran Eby, Karl Geist and Alison Miyauchi, Heather and Jan
Rasmussen, Phyllis Konrad, Morgan and Camryn Lee, Jens
Laursen, Jana and Tomas Kraus and Bill Smetheram.
Also thank you to Peter, Eli and the kitchen staff for their
assistance.

and firms have graciously supported us and it would be
appreciated if you find any of them that are in a position to
supply any goods and/or services which you may need in the
future, to give them a call with a view to having them fulfill your
requirements.
And last but not least, a great big thanks to Eli and his staff for
another wonderful feast.
Respectfully submitted.

W O W!
WHAT A PARTY
Thanks to Peter and Helle and all of their fine group of
volunteers we are happy to report that our 36th annual VIKING
STAG was an unqualified success.
With the additional help from Eva, we had a sell-out of 230
patrons and with the expert salesmanship of our young ladies
we had a record sale of 70 syndicate tickets, making this
the largest sale of tickets, ever. Our young ladies were also
responsible for the sale of 50/50 and grey cup pool tickets.
Needless to say, without the fine participation of our faithful
donors of prizes for our draw, the evening would probably
have been quite boring. As it was, we were able to give out a
prize for every fourth ticket being drawn.
Speaking of the draw it was, indeed a great pleasure to once
again have our illustrious POTLICKIN’ HALL OF FAMER Jim
“Bearcat” Murray as our guest MC and head ticket announcer
for his, get this, 14th consecutive year. Once again, many
thanks for your continued participation and we hope to have
you back for many more as you add a lot of class to this
prestigious event.
Once you have volunteered for this event, it is hard not to lend
a helping hand as evidenced by Knud and Barb Thisted who
dropped by to help in posting and placing all of the numbered
and name tags on the draw board prior to their flying away to
Mexico for their annual winter vacation. Many thanks for all
of us and we sincerely hope you have a safe and enjoyable
holiday. See Ya next year.
At this time we do not have a full report on the outcome of the
stag, but, we do, however, understand that we are in the black
and will have a full report when it becomes available.
When you are in the Mermaid lounge, it would be nice if you
would read over our poster which outlines our complete list
of donors of prizes for our stag. Over the years, these people

Gus Andersen,
Past President & Roving Reporter
You will never know who you will meet…
at a party !
On the weekend I was invited to a party and
it turned out to be in a rich man’s home – not
much of a party, but I had the opportunity to
sit down with the owner who was interested
in who I was and what type of an accent did I
have, where did I come from etc.. Having hopefully satisfied his
curiosity and to make the story short – he gave me his card,
asked me to contact the person whose name was shown.
“Solid” work – Banking – and a car ..
I did and found myself employed “on the spot” in a Paint
manufacturing company
At $ 50.00 a week. I was happy, it was important that I could
show I had a “permanent” job when I went to the bank for a loan
($ 1000 ) which also had been “arranged” by my friendly host. A
car was purchased ( Pontiac 1949) with the first automatic gear
that I had owned. The sun was shining – I was in business and
mobile.
The trial period ( both ways )
During a period of three months I tried to “settle in” and to get
a feel for how this company was operated . Three months later
I was “promoted” and they put me in charge of the department
which dealt with and kept track of the many different Codes
of all the chemicals used to manufacture paints. True, I didn’t
know anything about chemicals, but I was well acquainted with
cost factors, system descriptions and color coding concepts to
make ( a company’s) bottom line look better. The idea being
that all chemicals be chosen by an operator through a color
coded system, so there would be no need to read the wording
of the content of drums or crates. If a product came from Korea
or Japan with the same number, but slightly different lettering
– could cause some confusion ( and a lot of money) if used as
the “right” batch in an 8oo gallon mix. The system I introduced
eliminated that and the company accepted my suggestions
and charts.
If you accept responsibility – you expose yourself to
criticism…..
…. And that’s where my new headaches started. Some
employees felt that a “foreigner should not have been promoted
to that position in preference of a born Canadian. (we were
doing ok before he came here !) and they let me know their
displeasure by changing out forms in wrong folder or remove
the color codes and attach them to the ”wrong” products. It
all worked out in the end, and since it was not my intention of
becoming a paint producing person, I merely used this position
as a “springboard” to get into what I had set out to do – namely
to be self-employed in the financial field. First the car had to
be paid off fast; towards this goal I accepted an offer from the
boss in the cafeteria of this company. His delivery company for
bread ,cakes etc was Weston Bakeries which needed a ”night
person” to stack all the “trails” with bread so the drivers could
just line their trucks up at 5 am and load them fast and get
going on their routes.
