Four things to experience at Theodore
Roosevelt National Park’s south unit
PHOTOS AND STORY BY KIRSTI CRAIG
T
he natural beauty of the
Theodore Roosevelt National
Park south unit, located
within the Roughrider Electric
Cooperative service area, is widely
known. Most local visitors have their
favorite things they like to do at the
park. Driving the loop, hiking some
of the shorter trails, or camping at
the Cottonwood Campground are all
popular ways to enjoy the Badlands.
But have you ever explored some
of the attractions that are a bit
lesser known?
Eileen Andes, chief of
interpretation and public affairs
for Theodore Roosevelt National
C2 J UNE 2 0 1 5 n R O U G HRIDER ELECTRIC NEWS
Park, shares some of her favorite
park adventures.
The Petrified Forest
hiking loop. The Petrified Forest
Loop is a 10.3-mile route that winds
through ancient petrified forests
and wilderness. It’s a moderatelevel trail that usually takes five
to six hours to complete. “Every
Saturday during the summer we take
people on guided trails 1.3 miles
into the loop,” Andes says. “Guests
sign up and meet the ranger at the
south unit Visitor’s Center before
caravanning to the trailhead in the
northwest corner of the unit. People
are fascinated by petrified wood, and
our collection is quite unique in its
size. The guided tours are a great way
to enjoy the trail without committing
to the full loop.”
Backcountry Camping.
While camping in the designated
campgrounds is popular and fun,
park visitors looking for more of a
backwoods experience can camp
in the park’s designated wilderness
areas. In the south unit, this area
is located in the northwest corner.
“Places like Jones Creek and the
Talkington Trail are popular with
overnight backpackers,” Andes
says. Free backcountry permits are
required and available at the visitor

center. “We want to know generally
where people are before they go
overnight wilderness camping, but
there are not designated campsites.
As long as our guests follow the rules
as to where they should set down
their camp, they are free to find a
spot on their own.”
61st Annual Birdwalk
and Chuckwagon
Breakfast. Sponsored by the
Theodore Roosevelt Nature and
History Association, the birdwalk
is a leisurely one-hour study of the
birds found in the park. It takes place
on Sunday, June 7 at 6:30 a.m. MDT.
Participants meet at the Cottonwood
Campground registration area. The
breakfast takes place after the walk
in the campground picnic area. Preregistration is appreciated and can be
completed by emailing info@trnha.
org. “I’m not a morning person, but
I never miss this event. It’s fantastic,”
Andes says.

Dakota Nights
Astronomy Festival. The
three-day festival, a newer event
to the park, takes place September
11-13. The park partners with the
city of Medora to host daytime
and evening events throughout the
weekend. There are guest speakers,
star viewings, rocket building and
launching, and more. “The telescope
field is at Peaceful Valley Ranch,”
Andes says. “People can view the
stars and planets with astronomers
as their guides. Last year the skies
were clear and it was spectacular.”
The park, which hosts around
600,000 people every year in
its north and south units, is a
fantastic way to explore western
North Dakota’s native landscape.
More newer residents in the area
are making it a destination to
enjoy the beautiful landscape and
natural habitat. n

Providing
electric
service in a national park
There are many unique
challenges faced when providing
power to a national park. Theodore
Roosevelt National Park’s south
unit is no different. When
Roughrider Electric Cooperative
builds infrastructure to serve a
new meter for the park — whether
it be for a water well or a visitor’s
center — we work with the Park
Service to ensure that the natural
landscape remains unscathed.
Junction boxes are tucked behind
boulders, meters hidden out of site,
and underground electric lines are
carefully installed along designated
routes.
Roughrider Electric Cooperative
is proud to be a part of the park’s
legacy by providing safe, affordable
and reliable electrical service. n

CONSERVATION AND ENERGY EFFICIENCIES INCENTIVES
R
oughrider Electric Cooperative is continuing the
conservation and energy-efficiency program through
2015. The incentives help you, the member, become more
energy efficient.
The program for 2015 will include ground-source heat pumps
and air-source heat pumps.
Members must buy and install qualifying systems between
Jan. 1, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2015. The program for the heat pumps
is for new installation or for replacement of a conventional
heating system.
Roughrider Electric Cooperative personnel will check the
installation, and get the appropriate documentation and receipts.
Once completed and approved, Roughrider Electric Cooperative
will send a check directly to the member to help cover the
purchase cost.
A maximum dollar amount has been set aside for the incentive
program. The program will close when we meet this amount.
Roughrider Electric reserves the right to cancel the program
without further notice. One rebate allowed per member.

Th
are names
of Cooperative
current and formerWHITE
members whose capital credit checks issued in December 2014 remain
uncashed. Members and former members from the years 1988, 1989, 1992 and 1993 had checks issued to them. Please
contact us if your name appears on this list so we can update our records and re-issue your check.
What are capital credits?
When you buy electricity from Roughrider Electric Cooperative, you become a member and owner. You then have a
share in the capital that remains at the end of the year. After expenses for furnishing your energy are satisfied, money left
over, “margins,” is set aside for you in the form of capital credits. These credits are divided among members, based on the
amount and cost of electricity you purchased throughout the year.
Your capital credits become the cooperative’s equity, and make it possible for us to secure loans and maintain facilities
and services. The board of directors may authorize a capital credit retirement when they deem the financial position of the
cooperative is strong enough to support it.
In December, members and former members received more than $1 million in capital credit retirements. We reserve
your capital credits for you even if you leave the cooperative and move out of the area. If you are eligible for a capital credit
retirement, we will make a diligent effort to send you a check by mail to your most current address on file.
If the check returns or is left unclaimed, your name will appear in Roughrider Electric Cooperative News, as names
appear here this month.
If you have information about any of the following names that may have a new address, please contact us via phone or
email, 1-800-748-5533 or [email protected].
Persons who wish to claim checks from the following list should be prepared to provide proper personal identification.
Please keep a current address on file to help us deliver your future checks. If you have been a member before, tell us and
help us keep your file up-to-date. n
