Garden design
At the invitation of Oleg Drozdov, a Ukrainian
architect, JSA designed the garden for Artur Geuchmann’s house in Odessa. Like the nearby garden of
Oleg Mikhailenko, this site has a phenomenal view of
the Black Sea. Not only is the view extraordinary, but
the house itself has exceptional character, thanks
to its zigzag floor plan and the expressive shape of
its roof. The design and location of the house, along
with the wishes of the architect and client, provided
the main design parameters for the garden.
The central component of the plan is the pattern
of lines between the patio and the swimming pool,
some parallel and some diverging. The parallel
lines accentuate the horizon. Because the paving
is allowed to fan out on one side, the garden is
naturally divided into one section associated with
the main residence and another associated with the
guest house. Between the paved paths, the design
proposes a mixture of trees, shrubs, perennials and
ornamental grasses. The garden thus offers not only
a breathtaking view, but also a cool place for seclusion and repose.
The colour palette for the materials and plants is
based on blue and grey tones, but also leaves room
for frivolous accents and plants with highly unusual
shapes. Together, the vegetation and the architectural materials create the desired atmosphere. The
tone is set by the Salix sepulcralis chrysocoma, or
golden weeping willow, beside the pool.
