The world is flat, the economy global, innovation cycles compressed, comfort
zones threatened. Everything about today’s business environment demands
speed, flexibility and perseverance. Managing a business is more daunting and exhilarating - than ever.
Global companies need strong leadership for these turbulent times. Knowledge
and skill are obviously necessary, but managers require more. They must
embrace uncertainty, accept ambiguity, and acknowledge the incomplete
nature of themselves and their organisations. They must live by the principle
that successful leadership means constant learning and renewal.
We, at ESADE and the University of St. Gallen (HSG), are excited to help you begin
your quest to become a strong leader through our Programme for Leadership
Development (PLD). The PLD is an innovative and rigorous offering from two of
Europe’s most highly recognised institutions of higher management education.
It is designed to give you a portfolio of knowledge, skills and personal awareness
that will make you a much more effective leader.
Our aim is to help you obtain your greatest personal and professional aspirations.
2 Programme for Leadership Development - www.exed.esade.edu
Objectives
Is there anything more exciting than managing an organisation? The Programme for Leadership Development knows the passion of talented executives for
taking charge, and it is designed specifically to help
them master the challenges of General Management.
The programme’s objectives are to:
• Help the manager to define and build the organisation’s future, providing a global framework with
which to make decisions, as well as the strategies
Participants
The Programme for Leadership Development - PLD
is designed for executives and high potentials with
substantial responsibilities within their companies
and several years of work experience. These people
are committed to their organisations and their own
professional development and want to complement
their previous training and management experience
with specific general management skills and knowhow.
Participants should have at least a business-level
command of English in order to participate fully in all
programme sessions.
to protect the organisation from threats.
• Develop the manager’s self-awareness, perfecting
his or her personal leadership style to promote staff
growth and organisational success.
• Enrich the manager’s experience with that of other
programme participants, business leaders and
professors, broadening the manager’s professional
network.
Programme Benefits
The PLD turns managers into leaders. Building on
their experience and knowledge, participants will
broaden their views and discover a global vision
of the organisation and general management
that business leaders need today.
They will learn from top educators using the latest
techniques in business education, and they
will develop a dynamic network of present and
future leaders that will enrich their experience
throughout their careers.

LEAD
The PLD programme was ideally tailored for working
professionals, which enabled me to continue my
full-time job activities, but it also offered me a
truly enriching and vibrating class experience.
Each academic module gave me concrete inputs and
illuminating answers on how to handle corporate
issues; enhancing my management skills for taking
strategic decisions and stimulating me on building
my personal career vision. Our international multitalented class, coached by prestigious professors,
created soon an extraordinary spirit that we liked to
express with a class slogan: “tolerate, share, achieve!”

Conveniently scheduled for the working professional,
the PLD was, in my experience, a hands-on course
that interconnected different views of enterprise
management. Through its emphasized soft-skill
approach, it was an eye-opener to the applicability of
my own capabilities, which also helped enhance my
self-awareness and self-management.
The mixture of a dynamic learning environment
together with highly talented fellow students and
outstanding professors, put us in touch with state of
the art developments in several fields, and allowed
me to face a career change with a new perspective and
full confidence in my improved aptitudes.

Learning Model
ESADE and HSG have remained faithful to two
principles in management education: the conviction
that a plural methodological framework is enriching
and the need to continuously innovate the methods
and content of this framework.
Integrated knowledge
The PLD’s diverse methodologies ensure global learning
while remaining perfectly centered around ESADE and
HSG’s guiding vision of General Management.
The PLD programme requires assistance during all
modules and strongly encourages interaction during
class. Additionally, the modules require preparation
and evaluation consisting of readings and cases as
well as assignments at the professor’s discretion,
which may represent a strong workload during the
programme.
Contact with the Business World
Project Paper
Classroom sessions will be supplemented by opportunities to discuss current events with prominent
business and economic leaders in relaxed settings.
Guest executives will offer a presentation on an issue
of concern in the business world, then participate in
a roundtable discussion with the participants. Participants will also be able to visit companies in each
region where sessions are held to learn about local
specifics of doing business in Europe.
In addition to the classroom training, candidates will
complete an individual or group assignment, either a
leadership project or a thesis. Candidates should plan
to spend two days per month on this assignment. It
will be prepared under the supervision of programme
faculty and, ideally, apply newly gained knowledge to
the participants’ current working environment.
The LEAD Programme
One key component of this course is the LEAD Program,
developed by Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis
and exclusively adapted for Europe by ESADE.
LEAD consists of a series of practical sessions and
personal exercises carried out via an online platform,
combined with individual coaching sessions. Based
on their ideal leadership profile, students develop a
personal development strategy that goes beyond the
end of the course. This strategy has a direct impact on
students’ development as executives.
International Exposure, European Focus
A unique and important feature of the programme is
the fact that it is conducted in three countries: Spain,
Switzerland and UK. Participants will benefit from the
learning atmosphere at both participating business
schools.
ESADE Alumni: A Prestigious Network
Once participants have finished their studies, they
will become part of the extensive ESADE alumni
community, representing more than 48,000 former
students who make up a network of contacts around
the world. As alumni, former students can take
advantage of the continuous services and activities
organised by the ESADE Alumni Association to help
maintain their personal and professional links.

The University of St. Gallen (HSG) was founded
in 1898 and is the leading business university in
German speaking Europe. Proximity to practice

characterised HSG since its foundation. Today it
is among Europe’s leading business universities,
earning both EQUIS and AACSB accreditations.
8 Programme for Leadership Development - www.exed.esade.edu
ESADE was founded in Barcelona in 1958. It is
a renowned educational institution whose main
activities of education, research and social debate
take place on campuses in Barcelona, Madrid and
Buenos Aires.

obtain all three international accreditation awards
in business education: AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA.

without a first academic degree must have substantially
more work experience and a proven career track).
