Women’s Tennis
Outlook
Pulling off a second-place finish in last year’s Iowa Conference tourney was a major surprise for the Central College
women’s tennis team. Doing so again might even be more of a shocker, yet coach Doug Stursma expects good things for
the Dutch in 2004.
Stursma garnered conference coach of the year honors after piloting his squad to a 13-2 dual mark in the fall, followed by a 5-1 spring season record. But the Dutch must replace a mainstay at the top of the lineup, Emilie Larson, who
was the team MVP. Also gone is #5 singles player Michelle Van Vark.
That leaves the number one position to either senior Tracy Stursma or sophomore Kristin Kovar, who earned allconference honors at numbers two and three singles, respectively. Also gaining all-league recognition were senior Lindsey
Yuska at number four singles and senior Ellen Gallinger at number six. They’ll contend for the next two spots behind
Stursma and Kovar.
“Those are four pretty solid players,” Stursma said.
Kovar was a lofty 18-1 last year while Stursma was 16-3. Posting those kind of numbers while moving up in the
order will be difficult, but the elder Stursma ranks them with the league’s best and thinks they’re ready for the challenge.
“I think they’ll be able to handle that,” he said. “They’ve got some experience. All three of those seniors have played
varsity every year.”
Stursma called the duo one of the league’s best
Yuska was 15-3, and a perfect 5-0 in league matches, while Gallinger was 17-4.
Returnees aiming for the number five and six positions include senior Danielle Dowling, sophomore Maureen
Khairallah and sophomore An Le.
Stursma anticipates getting help from a capable freshman class.
Katie Moklestad was a state tourney qualifier at Boone High School while Jennifer Knobbe was a part of the state
fifth-place doubles team for Kuemper High School in Carroll. Whitney Visser, from Sioux Falls, S.D., brings a solid high
school resume as well.
“I’m not sure where the freshmen are going to fit in,” Stursma said. “I think we’ll definitely have some freshmen
playing in the top six, but I’m not sure as to where. They’re a pretty neat bunch of players and they’re going to fit in well.”
Stursma doesn’t see anyone derailing perennial power Luther in the conference tourney, while Central will have to
battle Cornell to take second. Simpson and Coe appear most likely to also push the Dutch, based on returning players.
The conference tournament returns to an individual flighted tourney format Oct. 8-9. The top four teams in the conference standings then move on to a dual-meet tournament Oct. 16 to determine the final place finishes.
