16 END TERM 3 at 1:30pm
Dear Families,
Everyone had a great day on Monday for Literacy and Numeracy Week. The focus of the day was on Maths with
the children taking part in rotational activities and working collaboratively in multi-age groups. Thank you to all
the families for your enthusiasm and for the thought put into preparing for the day. The children and teachers
had a great day. Thank you to Mr Sim for planning and coordinating this experience for the children.
Today the children also had the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a Pilot and the maths involved in
flying a plane. Dan from the RAAF base in Sale, did a great job with the children who had fantastic questions for
him based around maths and flying. We are very lucky to have parents and friends who make the children’s
learning experiences very real here at St Aloysius.
Yesterday some parents will have received the Insight SRC School Improvement Surveys. All school communities
are surveyed so they can then use the data for future planning and improvement. The class that has the most
surveys returned will have a free dress day and a small prize. The more responses we receive the better the data
for us to use for future planning.
Last year I applied for a Supplementary Grant for our school. We have been given approval from Catholic
Education Melbourne for our planning proposal to go ahead. The grant will be used to finish the carpeting in the
downstairs areas of the school, the Foundation/Year 1 and Year 1/2 classrooms will be painted along with the
foyer area and all internal and external doors. The front of the school entrance will also be freshened up as well
as the boy’s and girl’s toilets. After considering advice from the professionals we are endeavouring to keep the
new colours neutral with the teal green colour
replaced with Dulux Ironstone. Emma has included a sample of the colour in the newsletter for everyone to see.
Let me know what you think.
Next week is Review week, we have been working towards this for the past four years and especially since the
start of this year. Our Self Reflection Report has already been forwarded onto our Reviewer, Colleen Wilkins as
an introduction to our school. This report explains the context of our school and the process we have followed in
the last four years in the implementation of our School Improvement Plan. A great deal of data is included in our
report which is evidence of all our achievements over this time. We have achieved great things over the last four
years and have also experienced challenges along the way. Colleen will be visiting the school on Tuesday and
Thursday of next week. Thank you to the parents who have given up their time to meet with Colleen on Tuesday
afternoon, everyone is very welcome from 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm.
A reminder we have assembly on Friday afternoon. We have David Southwick presenting the school with a new
Australian Flag and a member of our community will be presented with a volunteers award for her great
contribution to our school over many, many years. Our Year 3/4 children will present their green screen
productions on our last assembly of the term due to production delays.
Thank you to Alison Finlay and her helpers on Saturday and to the families for their great baking at the Bunnings
Cake Stall. Everyone’s efforts raised nearly $500 for our school.
I look forward to seeing all our dad’s, grandads or special friends for a bacon and egg roll on Friday morning for
Father’s Day. Don’t forget to let us know if you will be coming as we would hate anyone to miss out.
We also celebrate First Eucharist on Sunday at 9:15 am Mass. Our special children will be receiving the Eucharist
for the first time on Sunday and there will be a special blessing for all dad’s. It would be lovely to have as many

Maths Problem
The storekeeper found that if he removed the apples from his box either 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 at a
time there was always one left over. However, if he removed the apples 7 at a time there were
no apples left. If the box holds 500 apples, how many apples does the storekeeper have?
Lost Property is full to overflowing.
If your child has misplaced any of their
uniform please look in the lost property
basket before buying a replacement.
This is a timely reminder to:
CLEARLY LABEL
IN AN EASILY VISIBLE PLACE
EVERY ITEM your child brings to school.
Items which are labelled are easily returned through the school message tubs.
Over the school holidays we will be having painting of the lower level of the
school completed. All our doors which are currently teal will be painted in a
lovely charcoal, Dulux Ironstone. The external trim above the front double
doors will also have the teal painted out to Ironstone.
We hope to enhance the neutral colours rather than bright so that when
children’s work is displayed it will be the focal point rather than the paint work.
Please let us know what you think.
Classroom News Year 5/6
As part of the Grade 5 & 6 Inquiry unit on Creativity and to coincide with the Olympics in Rio, the students researched some of
the Olympic mascots over the past 50 years.
They were fascinated to learn about the story of each mascot and learn about the meaning behind each design. The activity provided students with an insight into the creativity and design of each mascot and the amount of work required to not only design
a mascot but also how they are selected for each Olympics.
Seoul 1988 Mascot
Name/s: Hodori
Design: The Ho of Hodori comes from the Korean word meaning tiger and it appears frequently in
Korean popular art and legends. The tiger is often associated with humour, bravery and nobility and he
wears the Olympic rings around his neck. On his head is a traditional Korean hat called the Sangmo and the
ribbon on the hat is in the shape of an S for Seoul,
Colour: Orange
What it represents: The tiger was designed as a Amur tiger which shows the friendly and hospitable traditions of the Korean
people.
Why/How it was chosen: The organising committee set up a contest to select the mascot and 4344 entries were submitted.
Four candidates were selected: a rabbit, a squirrel, a pair of mandarin ducks and a tiger and finally the tiger was chosen. The
name was chosen from 2295 competition entries submitted by the general public.
Designer: Kim Hyun
Barcelona 1992 Mascot
Name: Cobi
Design: Cobi is a human like Pyrenean (mountains in Barcelona) mountain dog in a “Cubist” style. He has
3 spiky hairs and has an really, really, really, large wardrobe.
Colours: He has the skin colour of human looking dog with wide open arms and sketched in a thick uneven black line.
Why/How it was chosen:The Barcelona judges chose him because he won the competition held by the
organising committee between 6 designers.
Designer: Javier Mariscal
Sydney 2000 Mascots
Name/s: Syd, Olly, Millie
Design: Syd - Platypus, Olly - Kookaburra, Millie - Spiny Anteater or Echidna

wears orange to invoke the sun and the paralympic emblem.
What it represents: They represent playing and the spirit of Olympism
Why/How it was chosen:
Designer: Spiros Gogos
London 2012 Mascots
Name/s: Wenlock and Mandeville
Colours: Blue and Orange
What they represents: Wenlock takes his name from the town of Much Wenlock in Shropshire, which
still hosts the traditional Much Wenlock Games. These were one of Pierre de Coubertin's sources of
inspiration for the modern Olympic Games.
Design: The head shape represents the 3 medals, the friendship bracelet ribbon represent the 5 colours
of the Olympic Rings, the black taxi light are inspired by the black taxi’s in London. Eye camera lets
Wenlock and Mandeville record all the actions of the games and the personal timer helps them keep track of performance
Why/How it was chosen: The mascots were chosen in a competition launched in 2008 after more than 100 designers, artists
and agencies submitted proposals.
Designer: They were created by Iris, a London-based creative agency.

rainforests of Brazil and blue represents the blue clear waters of the beaches in Brazil.
What it represents: Vinicius was designed for the Olympic Games and Tom was designed for the
Paralympics
Why/How it was chosen: The logo design was chosen through a vote of the Brazilian public and the
names were chosen through a vote. Some of the other possible names were Oba and Eba

mascots.

Prayer and coffee Morning Tuesday 9.15
Prayer changes lives so keep those prayer requests coming in. We
love to pray and see God move to change circumstances, heal
incurable diseases, and change hearts. There is NOTHING our God
cannot do. God loves it when we pray to Him, too. Anyone is welcome
to join us. Kym 0411644099 or [email protected] or leave a
note in the P&F tub. Anonymous requests welcome.
Family Bushdance Friday 14 October 6.30 pm - 9.30 pm
This night was a hugely popular event in the school three or four years ago;
involving both parents and children in fun activities and dancing. It was so much
fun that parents who were there have requested we do it again.
The night is run and organized by outside contractors which means we need to
sell tickets and confirm numbers. Tickets are priced at $30 per family with
Parents and Friends Association subsidising the remaining cost. Tickets will be
coming home shortly for you to purchase. We will have cordial and soft drink
available but otherwise the event is un-catered and families will need to BYO/bring a plate.
