ARLETTE MAGRAS ELECTED
WOMAN OF THE YEAR
MICHEL MAGRAS IN POLYNESIA
In his role as president of the French Overseas senatorial delegation, Saint Barth senator Michel
Magras visited French Polynesia, accompanied by
colleagues Abdourahamane Soilihi (senator from
Mayotte), Mathieu Darnaud (Ardèche), Robert Laufoaulu (Wallis-et-Futuna), as well as Pierre-Michel
Vauthelin, senate administrator. Polynesian senator
Lana Tetuanui led their visit as motivated by the
question of real estate in overseas territories, with
the goal of publishing, by June, a new report from
the senate on the subject. With a special focus on
the French territories where common law still
exists. For example, last the senate delegation
presided by Michel Magras already produced a
report on overseas real estate owned by the government. Certain recommendations in that report were
adopted into law last fall.
FRANÇOIS TRESSIÈRES NAMED
TO CTTSB
François Tressières was named to the steering committee of the Tourism Committee (CTTSB) by the
president of the Collectivité. He has replaced Fabrice Danet, who left the steering committee. As
director of the airport, Fabrice Danet will remain on
the board of the CTTSB. François Tressières is also
the secretary general of the Economic, Social, and
Cultural Council (CESE) of Saint Barthélemy.
Arlette Magras-Patrigeon with Nicole Gréaux, vicepresident of the Collectivité.
The Lyceum Club has elected Arlette Magras-Patrigeon as Woman Of The Year by, with her diploma
presented by Nicole Gréaux, vice-president of the
Collectivité on Tuesday, March 8, on International
Women’s Day. The ceremony was held at the
school canteen in Gustavia. Arlette Magras-Patrigeon was honored for her dedication to SaintBarthélemy and its history. Her projects includes a
large genealogical tree for the principal family
names on the island, based on the work of de Jean
Deveau, author of the book, “Le Peuplement de
Saint-Barthélemy.” Arlette Magras-Patrigeon has
been passionate about the question for several years
already. She also has assembled a large collection
of documents illustrating the history of Saint Barth.
This comprises photos, maps, sketches, and paintings, certain of which date from the Swedish era. In
addition, she has carefully created a small museum
in one room of her house. Over the past few years,
Arlette Magras has collaborated with Richard Lédée
on the creation of a website, Mémoire St-Barth
(www.memoirestbarth.com). She has also been in
touch with Per Tingbrand, and more recently historian Fredrik Thomasson, to expand her knowledge
about the island’s history. This has allowed her to
collaborate with various associations on the creation
of exhibits at the Territorial Museum as well as other manifestations and initiatives. These include the
Saint Barth plant herbier done by Saint Barth
Essentiel.

2016 ST BARTH BUCKET WINNER :
UNFURLED
After three days of great sailing under sunny skies, steady winds, and almost ideal racing
conditions, the 46m Vitters yacht, Unfurled, was named the overall winner of the 2016 St Barth
Bucket, which was held March 17-21, 2016.
aunched in 2016,
Unfurled is a new
high-performance
aluminum sloop that
marks the first collaboration between the
Dutch shipyard, Vitters,
and renowned Argentinean racing yacht
designer Germán Frers.
Unfurled was also the
winner in its class, Les
Gazelles des Mers, beating such boats as
Visione, last year’s winner of the St Barth
Bucket. New rules for
L
the Bucket stipulate that
the overall winner must
be one of the pursuit
class winners, all of
which are super yachts
over 30m in length. The
class winner, who prevails in the ‘most competitive, closely contested class,’ is the overall
winner. This year there
were five classes for the
first time, making the
racing more competitive
in each category.
Other class winners
Unfurled, winner
of Les Gazelles des Mers
and overall winner of the

quite a show. After four races,
The Bucket also awards a few
special trophies, with this year’s

DOMINIQUE ROUSSERIE AT JABUTI GALLERY
The Smoking Room (Prototype), 2015

200 x 160 cm / 79 x 63 in - pigments / canvas
abuti Gallery, located
upstairs from the Chopard
boutique in the Carré d’Or
in Gustavia, is showing the work
of Dominique Rousserie through
March 31. Roussiere has inaugurated this new space opened by
Brandy E. McMahon, and dedicated to contemporary art. This
exhibit of six pieces is titled “Sub
& Mapping,” with some of the
pieces seen for the first time.
That is the case of a submarine in
aluminum and wood dubbed
“The Smoking Room,” which is
finely worked and open like lace.
A repeating motif in the design is
a marijuana leaf, found in 20 different mandalas, the circular spiritual symbol used in Indian religions. “If you want peace, pre-
J
pare for war,” says Dominique
Rousserie, citing the old Latin
adage. For the artist, who is both
a painter and a sculptor, opposites seem linked as part of a
whole. They create the cosmic
universe that comprises both
matter and memory, the map and
the land, the conscious and
unconscious, that which can be
seen and that which cannot. As
witnessed in two of the paintings
in the “Mapping” series, which
comprise two maps, and represent “my personal geography,”
explains Rousserie. In this case,
it’s the Atlantic Ocean. The
artist, who is also a seasoned
traveler, crossed the Atlantic by
boat quite a few years ago, with a
personal look at the ocean cur-
rents, translated into various
shades of blue pigment on the
canvas. This is in opposition to a
map of Saint Barthélemy, with its
black upstrokes, punctuated by
the names of imaginary places.
Or a view of an unknown island
at night, as a submarine
approaches, evoking all that is
found under the water or in the
shadows. Then brought to the
surface…
