The festival was a great success for the organizers, the Severn Freewheelers, who are part of the National
Association of Blood Bikes, and who provide a free out-of-hours service delivering blood, human tissue
and other essential medical items between NHS facilities in Hereford & Worcester, Gloucestershire and
North Wiltshire. The event attracted over 4500 visitors and raised over £35,000 for these charities.
There was a spectacular array of motorcycles on display and being demonstrated up the hill climb track.
These ranged from every early veteran flat-tankers to the very latest modern machines and represented
every shape, size and style imaginable from kid’s mini-motos to fully customised choppers. There really
was something for all motorcycling tastes and it was great to see and hear them in action as well as being
able to study them at extremely close quarters in the paddock area as they waited their turn on the track.
Many thanks to Terry Bass for suggesting the club had a stand there and for organizing it all, and
especially to Dave Peake, who without receiving any prior warning, let us load almost all of the club’s
equipment into his outfit at the end of the day. Sorry and Thank You to Dave!

BOB BUFTON
It is with great sadness that we have to report the sudden death of Bob Bufton. All we know is he
was admitted to hospital in Worcester then transferred to Birmingham for emergency surgery. He
had been allowed home but passed away a week or so later. Bob was not only a very long standing
member of our club but he was also the mainstay of the Worcester section of the VMCC. His
devoted work for them over decades earned him a national VMCC award a few of years ago. Many
will remember tales of his exploits on his beloved ancient Norton (such as a roadside repair carving
new brake blocks from the hedgerow), his long succession of BMWs (one fitted with metal ‘GS
style’ panniers fabricated from WH Smith filing cabinets) and more recently a Harley Davidson as a
day-to-day ‘hack’. He will be sorely missed by the entire motorcycling fraternity. Ride in peace.

CHAIRMAN’’S WITTERING
Prescott Bike Festival has come and gone. When I looked out across Widemarsh Common at 6am it looked
like Siberia, uh oh do I take the bike or the car? But as I had already arranged to meet at the Trumpet with
other members for the onward journey it had to be the bike. It was MINUS 4 when I left Hereford at
6.40am! (Dave Peake left at 6.15am!!). I have never been so cold (or mad?). My visor kept steaming up so
had to have it slightly open and the cold was cutting my face and my fingers got frostbite. I caught John
Peters up at Bartestree and Mike England was waiting at the Trumpet looking like he was on an Antarctic
Expedition covered in frost.
The frost was like a whiteout until at least Tewkesbury. Between Eastnor & Tewksebury John began to get
slower feeling the effects of the bitter cold. We stopped for the Worcester members just beyond
Tewkesbury and warmed our hands and gloves on the engines. With the Worcester members rolling in
(Malcolm Copson was on a strange looking Triumph Virago) we set off and as we got closer to Prescott
the temperature rose somewhat, the frost non-existent and the water on the side of the roads was no longer
frozen. Dave Peake was already there with Will, new banners erected and we all parked up. Dave Walsh
arrived on his immaculate Pan Europeon, off with his helmet and the out with the famous comb!
The day was excellent, Carol Copson won the ticket to run the hill but Malcolm took her place and as you
can imagine was very over excited. I think we will see one of his stories in the newsletter. Thanks to Will
for helping me and the missus on Saturday to assemble the club stand, but I had to go back to Prescott on
the Monday to pick up some stuff we couldn't cram into Dave’s sidecar (thanks Dave). Roll on Prescott
Bike Festival April 6th 2014. Back down to earth, the weather is getting warmer, many good club runs on
the horizon, see you all soon!

bits and pieces to sell. Proceeds will be yours, so clear out your sheds, under the bed and make a bit of

March winter meet at the Temeside came and went – excellent venue and food. It was good to see Clive
Jones for a ‘catch up’. We gather Heather Wheeler has been involved in a bit of an accident but by all
accounts she is feeling better. I hope to see her & Mike on club runs soon.
Don’t forget I have passes for Andrew Greenwood’s motorcycle shows. The next one at Malvern is on 27th
October or plenty of other venues throughout the country all summer. Passes are valid if you are showing a
pre-1998 classic motorcycle and arrive between 7.00 – 11.00am. Entry with a pass is £2.50. Phone me to

Welcome to new club members Mark Jenkins and Terry & Olwen Sissell. We look forward to seeing you
at club events in the future. This brings the current club membership up to 149.
April club night: We had an informative presentation by Mervyn
Thomas about the history and work of the Wales Air Ambulance
followed by an entertaining question and answer session. If anyone
has any fund raising ideas please let us know and we will help
promote them. Already Dave Peake has organized his mini classic
bike show during his Postman Pat run with a raffle for the Wales Air
Ambulance and next month there is our annual Charity Treasure
Hunt Run. Please support these events for a worthy cause!
April raffle: £33 was raised for club funds by our two ticket totties Frances Bass and Chris Moore. Prizes
were donated by Steve & Carol Powell, Steve Keith and from amongst the treasure trove of items
presented to the club by the Grumpy Old Rockers in the bar. Thank you everyone!
Let there be light? Club member Michelle Gerrard has written asking for advice about a problem with her
Honda CG125: “I have an electrical conundrum that I hope the club members might be able to help
with. I want to change my 6v system to 12v. I’m realty struggling to be seen – ie indicators in bright
sunlight, let alone driving at night with poor headlight coverage of the road in non-street lit areas
areas””.
Michelle, you are not alone! Poor lights are a problem on lots of bikes with old electrics. If anyone can

Vie La France: We have been contacted by JtheB's who organize motorcycle tours in northwest France
based at a converted farmhouse near Villiers le Pré in Normandy. You can join one of their tours as an
individual rider or they will organize a specific ‘tailor-made’ tour to suit a club or group booking for any
type or age of motorcycle (or motorcyclist!). For more information see their website: www.jthebs.com
Technological Apples: There are a couple of new ‘apps’ for Apple i-phones which might be of use to
motorcyclists. The first is for reporting potholes. It uses the phones built in GPS to record the location of a
pothole exactly and work out which highways authority is responsible. You then take a photo of it with the
phone’s camera and it is all reported automatically to the relevant authority. The second ‘app’ uses the
phone’s tilt and rotation sensors to tell if you've come off your bike in an accident. It then sends an alert to
your phone which if you don't cancel (or can't cancel thru’ injury or unconsciousness) it then contacts the
emergency services to send an ambulance to your location by using the phone's GPS co-ordinates.
Dial 112: In the UK, EU and over 70 countries worldwide you can call the emergency services by dialling
112. With a mobile phone this will connect via any network not just the one your phone operates on. If the
networks are busy it will automatically prioritize your call and if it is a ‘pay-as-you-go’ phone it will work
even if the phone has no credit. It will also bypass any PIN or security code some phones have, so if
necessary you can use someone else’s phone without having to know that information, and with some
phones it will work even without the phone’s SIM card. You can also send a text message to 112 which is
more reliable if the mobile phone signal is weak, but to do this you must pre-register the phone by texting
the single word ‘register’ to 112 and following the instructions you will receive in reply.
Wash
Wash’’n’wipe: ‘Visorcat’ is a new gadget for motorcyclists to keep their helmet visors clear and clean. It
combines a wiper blade and washer strapped to your wrist. In heavy rain your glove won’t get sopping wet
wiping your visor and in warmer weather, with its built-in reservoir of cleaning fluid, you don’t have to
stop to clean dead flies off your visor either! For more details see their website: www.visorcat.com

RUN & SHOW: GET YOUR OLD BIKE OUT!
In response to requests for shorter, slower runs for old bikes Dave Peake’s ‘Postman Pat’s Return’
run on 12th May will be a half day run and he will lead on his BSA M20 sidecar outfit so it won’t
be too fast! The run will feature an informal ‘pop up’ classic bike show at Withington Post Office
(Springfield Road, HR1 3RU) where it will stop for an extended mid-morning break to allow local
residents to enjoy the sights and sounds of our old machines – and if you’re still worried your
‘pride and joy’ might not be up to the ‘rigours’ of such a gentle run, you can go straight there to
display it. During the stop at the post office refreshments will be available and a raffle, all to raise
money for the Wales Air Ambulance and Breast Cancer Haven (Postmistress ‘Mrs Goggins’
chosen charity) & there will be additional parking at the nearby community centre (HR1 3PP).
PRESCOTT BIKE FESTIVAL, April 7th 2013
An email from our honourable chair Mr Terry Bass asking for volunteers to show their bikes at the above
event resulted in Carol – 1995 Yamaha Virago, Dudley Guest - Honda 400 four, John Stack – Velocette
Venom and me – Triumph 1972 500 T100c all agreeing to attend. I spent Saturday morning getting the
bikes in fine fettle and topping them up with fuel for the long hard early morning trek to Gloucester some
40 miles away. We rose early to meet the lads at my place at 7.30am. It was cold so we donned all the
cold weather clothing and I got the bikes out the garage.
The time is now 7.20am and I decide to free the clutch on the triumph when snap!!!! Now there isn’t much
time as I know the lads will be on time so I thought “Blow it” and got my old Virago out (new battery) and
put the Triumph back in the garage a little brassed off. Off we go and met with Terry and some of the boys
at Tewkesbury at 8am for the final hard push to Gloucester. Who needs South Pole travel when we have it
on the doorstep?

We pull onto the site where Will and Dave have already set up the tent and advertising blurb and park the
bikes in a line with Will insisting the “modern” bikes do not mix with the older stuff. (It was just my
attempt to arrange them by age, from the oldest to the newest – Will.). Terry then comes out with a raffle
saying that there is a free ride up the hill for the lucky winner out of the “volunteers for the day”. Now you
must appreciate that Carol and I are new to the Prescott Bike Festival and the programme stating “Happy
Hour”, I thought meant a cheap beer. I also thought the Hill could have been the 1965 film with Sean
Connery staring as a bullying officer in a British army POW camp in North Africa in WW2 or the Silent
Hill, a film about goings on in a small town setting or even the Hill famous restaurant in Greenwich.
Well you guessed it, no not me, Carol won the raffle – and then graciously offered her ‘prize’ to me.
Happy hour was between 12 and 1pm for new and all comers to race up the hill as fast as possible, then if
you haven’t fallen off, have another go to see if you can improve on the first attempt – or die trying. We
had an ‘in depth’ safety briefing lasting 5minutes, issued with my race number 47 and a little advice what
to do when – sorry, if - you fall off!! I LOVED IT. It was the making of the day for me and the adrenalin
kick was brill.

There was live band music, stalls, a really friendly teacher who saved comics, weather turned out great and
stayed dry, food and beer(we didn’t indulge in the latter) all sorts of vehicles and bikes running the Hill
and yes, I made it in one piece. A great day out and those who did not come do not know what they missed.

EXPORTED!
A while back I decided to sell my MZ ISDT bike but I knew this wouldn’t be as simple as it sounds. The
common perception is that MZ two-strokes were mass produced as cheap and cheerful commuter transport
for East Germans before the fall of the Berlin Wall, which have now found a new role as cheap and
‘charismatic’ classic motorcycles. But as one of very few genuine works-built replicas of their iconic
multiple ISDT winning bikes, mine did not fall into these categories in any way. It stood out like a Grand
National winner amongst a herd of dobbins, and although many MZ enthusiasts would love to own one,
they baulk at the price compared to a more normal MZ. So what to do? I knew these bikes are really only
appreciated for what they are outside of the UK, so anticipated interest from abroad. But first I saw an
‘ISDT wanted’ advert in the UK MZ owner’s club magazine and phoned up. The chap was very keen until
we discussed a price and said ‘I’ll talk to the wife’ – so that would be a ‘No’ then!
Next I turned to the internet. I put pictures of my bike & a copy of a magazine article about it on my
Photobucket webpage and a video of it on YouTube. I then put a message on an internet forum dedicated
to just this one model of MZ – it is so unusual there are only 70 members of the forum worldwide! I only
said I was thinking about selling it, so was gobsmacked to have 3 replies in under an hour! All from
Germany and all very keen, but extra expense of getting the bike back rather put them off. I then repeated
the process on a more general MZ website and a MZ fanatic I know from South Wales spread the word on
Facebook. This all generated a lot of interest but still no offers, so I emailed an advert to the MZ owner’s
club magazine. Again within an hour the phone rang – it was the editor asking if I could send more photos
so he could do a full page of colour pictures of this scarce MZ! Of course I was thoroughly delighted at the
prospect of this extra publicity – the magazine is mostly black & white – but I warned him the bike might
sell before the magazine was published…..and sure enough that is exactly what happened. When I told him
he wasn’t at all bothered. He still had a good feature for the magazine, and it won’t be him answering the
phone to disappointed – and possibly irate – prospective buyers when the advert is published next month!
The buyer was from Belgium and had been tipped off about my bike by a friend of his who had seen the
internet forums. We haggled a bit – as you do – about the price until we came to a mutually agreeable
figure. Luckily for me he wasn’t worried about the cost of transport. He had been looking for a MZ ISDT
for a while and the last one he’d tried to buy had been in America, so in comparison getting mine from
Ross on Wye would be cheap! He paid a deposit by Paypal to secure the deal and the balance when he
collected it. He drove nearly 1000 miles in a day to get it to its new home – and we had to dismantle it to
get it to fit in his estate car! The paperwork took a bit of sorting out – be warned, the section in a V5c
logbook for exporting vehicles only applies if it’s a UK resident taking it overseas. But as he was coming
to collect it, in this case according to the DVLA rules, it was actually a Belgian resident exporting it!
Fortunately the DVLA were very helpful explaining what to do – once I’d negotiated the labyrinth of their
automated telephone system and spoke to a human!
So now you will all be able to venture out on club runs without the fear of being deafened by the ISDT’s
raucous exhaust (I’ll leave that to my Ducati!) or being smothered by its smog of two-stroke smoke and
fumes. Auf Wiedersehen MZ!

Office and surrounding area. Money raised will go to charity.

run is another one ideal for British bikes, smaller bikes and M21 outfits. Don’t bring the R1 or
Fireblade, bring something old and interesting.

The Visit: 1pm to 3.30-ish a walk around the valley to see the Red Deer. Meet Madadh a 90
pound female wolf and see the rest of them. You should get to hand feed Madadh and make a
fuss of her. This is something you won’t forget for a long time. You will need good boots and a
camera. SORRY THIS RUN IS NOW FULLY BOOKED.
The Finish: We will end our day at the Watering Hole cafe for tea and cake, 4.30-5pm. Please
